Horizon: Forbidden West | Gameplay Reveal Trailer

Due to the selective resolution, higher than normal frame rates can be achieved. I consider that it should not go below 90 fps per eye.

GTSport has already been demonstrated at 120fps per eye, and I am sure they have also tested with GT7.

I can't say what other studios will achieve, but if Naughty Dog were to make a VR game it would be sure to be at least 90fps with the quality (or detail) of TLOU2.

Speaking from own experience, fully interactive photorealistic spaces can be perfectly created at more than 90fps with less hardware than the PS5. That is not to say that all PSVR2 VR games are going to be photorealistic as a rule, no, that will not happen. But the capacity is there. The rest will depend on the skill, time and money of each company.

But more important than the fps will be the latencies. But this has actually been known for many years. For example, here you have an interesting publication (download the PDF).

2017 Publication

Thank you for responding! I can't wait to see what folks are working on for the PSVR2. I'd be blown away if the Horizon VR game that's being made could match this Forbidden West footage.

There's so much potential there with PSVR2 in general I think it's gonna amaze all of us.

It is more than possible that San Francisco would look like that. Let me explain:

1000 years, right?

1) Well, Earth has a wobble axial rotation:

That rotation changes the climate around different parts of the globe, with the full wobble rotation estimated to be 26,000 years.

960x0.gif

That happens when you are far from the sun during northern summer (winter in the south) and closer to the sun during northern winter (summer in the south, Aussies know that). Due to un

Although that should mean the Tropic of Capricon should be the line of death, when in reality it has the most of rainforests compared to the Tropic of Cancer. I think that's due to less dry land and more sea and ice there compared to the northern hemisphere which means lots of mist to cool down.

This could make desert places tropical rainforest again, and vice versa, could as well make San Francisco more "tropical" than it is, but not necessarily.

2) Invasive plants say hi:

With many gardens and even homes having exotic plants and trees from all over the world you should expect those to compete with native plants and trees as well. Here is an invasive plant called "Wild Balsam" (Impatiens balsamina) literally invaded our mountains and turn the mountains into pink during late August and September after the monsoon season:

Yup, that's fucking me ~11 years ago:

4979480023_1af94fe1c3_o.jpg

6121819464_19d88db964_o.jpg

We've had many other plants that root from all over the globe. Funnily, there are plants that came from the Americas and now are in the wild. So you can imagine how it's possible to have mixed nature after 1,000 years when people lose control over those gardens.

------------------------

Anyway, I hope that entertained some. This is one massive reason why I loved Horizon Zero Dawn and went reading everything because this futuristic stuff entertains me a lot and makes me read every collectable in the map to learn more. Horizon is a very unique game and experience to me, just like The Division that people spent their time shitting on I was more interested in the political background on why the US and Russian governments are keeping the smallpox virus in their labs even with all the WHO calls to terminate them as it's an extinct virus in the wild since 1979.

And how such divisions exist for various reasons in real life. Interesting stuff.
What subject did you say you teach again?

Christ, yeah Aloy looks a bit "puffy" in the new trailer...but they think THAT'S the answer?

Why not some new dialog while you're at it guys... " hey Aloy Errond's been captured, what should we do?" "Don't ask me I'm just a girl tee hee tee hee"

What a joke
they both look equally ridiculous which just goes to show how bad that GG model really is.

If I was Jim Ryan, I would call up GG and find out just who is responsible for this disastrous fuck up of the face of their Playstation brand. Literally the face. Then fire them on the spot over a zoom meeting with every single first party studio joining to set an example of what NOT to do when designing marketable characters which is what they are.

It's absolutely bizarre to see these fuck ups from Sony studios time and time again. Just a few years ago, the ND lead character artist, a woman, was on a panel and went on to point out how they made Drake attractive because well, your protagonist has to be attractive. Her words. It's the most basic aspect of designing a character. Especially a lead character who is going to go on your boxart and will define your brand going forward.

There is a reason why we dont see heroes with beer guts, and double chins. Hollywood, tv and video games have gone through this time and time again. There is zero need to go and change that. Even tyrion who is a midget and very very ugly in the books had to be changed. They hired an attractive actor. gave him an attractive haircut. and when he got his nose cut off, they decided to not include that in the show because no one wants to see a monstrosity on screen.

I get that Sony gives their studios a lot of freedom but they have to put the foot down here. This is getting ridiculous.

It's actually disrespectful to women because despite how progressive they want to appear, their designs actually come across as them hating women.

I see that Aloy’s looks is all the talk here too. Better not say much because I struck a nerve in the other thread. The new looks is a bit odd but shouldn’t be a big deal either. It will turn off a few people, sure, but it won’t matter in the end.

So here I am back from getting bitch slapped like a little princess. I knew as soon as I rated those nudes 7/10 I was done. But I digress.

A lot of praise indeed. Side by side with the original, the density of the world has taken a marked increase no doubt. But alas I'm not fully sold.

Allow me to articulate my thoughts....
  • Completely subjective - the saccharine colors just aren't my jam. More earthly tones like in The Last Of Us are by far my preferred style.
  • Some of the structures look a bit last gen - like something out of UE3 era even. Bit flat, cardboard like without enough geometric detail
  • Shadow and other LOD popin
  • Plants seem to lack translucency? Looking at the older trailers e.g. the tall sea grass shows light shining through the leaves - this seems to have been removed in this gameplay??
  • TLOU2 still eats its lunch!
  • I think this is very much cross gen and held back.
*Gasp* was VFXVet right all along?

In saying all this, I was highly critical of the Ghosts Of Tsushima trailers - till I played it myself and came away pleased....
I think it's definitely being held back by last gen, but I am happy with the upgrades it's gotten over Horizon Zero Dawn. It is a generational leap, but tbh being cross gen was always going to hold back not just the game design but also the world design.

That said, I think it looks a gen ahead even compared to TLOU2.

Chloe looks like my Indian friend. That’s not a real out there look for a lot of Indian Women, especially from Punjab. Also reading this thread I can’t believe one bad angle is causing all this drama YET AGAIN.

Though I do agree with you on Naughty Dog but it’s not like for those perspective rolls don’t fit on some level. I did IT for the military for a while and Abby could fit right in with them, especially the more muscular/athletic women. Even the more fem ladies have an edge in the military depending on the role they’re assigned.

The breast reduction on Danas face and body model and Abby’s increased muscle mass was just weird. The original trailer from 2016 was more like “oh she’s muscular!” To “Yo bitch you look like you can take me on wtf” c

Perhaps Guerrilla thought gamers have gone even more fat during the pandemic and they made Aloy look chubby so what we all can relate more to the character #lol
There is a interview with Herman Hulst and Neil Druckmann on the Playstation channel where Herman described Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn as being fundamentally human and not someone with superpowers. Aloy is not real, it's a computer character but it should not stop Guerrilla to make her look closer to a human. All those couchpotatoes should stop commenting on her looks and head to the gym. I think she looks amazing!

The game already looks in hdr lol, it is similar to biomutant in a way, i have my tv on the professional 2 mode (aka super realistic and dull colors) but that game's colors pops out like fat on aloy's cheeks.

this is a really nice trick to have "realistic" graphic with a cartoony undertone that make you more easy to forget some low res text or graphical flaws, i bet my ass that horizon 3 exclusive for ps5 is gonna have less of this color graduation, but i love it, it does enhance the game personality and uniqueness.

Maybe he use that sticky cheese gel inside aloy's granades to keep his hairs pristine?!
if he can stob a big dino mammouth, i bet it's enough for some hairs.

you got them wrong way around... HDR usually produces a less bright/colourful image, instead it gives a more contrast to the image (so darker areas are darker but brights are way brigther (and more detailed) too) where as SDR has similar brigthness across the whole image (like you simulated HDR here)

I really can't see HFW looking that much better, a whole gen apart compared to TLoU2, (or RDR2 or UC4's Libertalia level). Yes it's more dense compared to first Horizon, but it's not something completely new, never done before, leagues above everything else.

The thing is, with development times getting so long nowadays, we don't get to see different iterations of the same engine withing the same generation very often, but that's exactly what's going on with HFW - it's the same kind of engine upgrade we saw from UC2 to UC3, from Res2 to Res3, from KZ2 to KZ3 (where GG tripled the polygon output), and so on. People wonder how HFW will be able to run on PS4, but I'm pretty confident there won't be many cutbacks, the drop from 4K to 1080p alone will already make it so much less demanding. It's just a more refined, optimized engine, but nothing really next-gen.

I enjoyed the first one so I am in but this game looks nothing like the "bull shots" and CGI we have seen so far. i.e. game play looks the same as the last game, just looks a bit prettier, nothing to blow you away.
Looks nothing like? In what way? Gameplay looks the same? What did you expect? It's a sequel it's not gonna all of a sudden become a platformer.

Off topic I know but I’m very familiar with this phenomenon. It’s also known as “precession of the equinoxes”, it’s effects can be very dramatic, for example around 12,000 years ago the Sahara and the Middle East were actually tropical rain forests lol so there’s always a precedent for such things in gaming, truth can be stranger than fiction at times.

Hes entitled to his opinion, people like what they like. I think Returnal is a turd but I respect that people like it and if they deemed it the best game they ever played then good for them.
Agreed

Such statements are will always be subjective by their nature and the nature of what is being discussed, such as what we enjoy or think looks good.

It’s one of the reasons why there’s so much dispute over what was the best looking game of the past generation. Different people will notice different things, I’m a sucker for photorealism and games that lean towards it, high polygon counts and high resolution textures (a good example of this would be God of War 2018). Others judge how good a game looks soley on the basis of the lighting technologies most notably ray-tracing which I think is strange but each to their own.

I'm glad you posted the TLOU2 gifs as it gives us a nice comparison. Obviously lighting is better in Horizon. Foliage is slightly denser on Horizon as well but the lack of interaction on shorter foliage is a little jarring. The one area TLOU2 is better in is animation, they have real weight to their movement but in Horizon not really at all.

60fps gonna be there no doubt about it, but man every time I hear that chase music... pure joy!
I am praying to god man that Forbidden West is 60FPS and that they are able to hit it, even if its 1440p I'll take it. It just looks so much smoother and would seem to be more enjoyable to play.

Do people think the minimalist reaction to foliage when interacted with will be addressed before release?

I think it's impossible to address now. Maybe they added too much foliage variety and density in that expense. Also it should work on PS4 and how pop in is in this game it's obviously made from PS4 then upscaled. They made great work indeed but it would need so much extra money and time to have 2 completely different workflows for PS4 and PS5 with specific codes for either. It means more updates in the future are more tedious and predict on each platform.

With the dawn of DRS, more than sure that is possible. I think it'll be shown via previews as they seem to care about screenshots spread around the internet to be at the highest quality representation.

IDK, I remember this with Ghost. Even DF commented on how the grass didn’t react to footprints or the like from the SoP video, then when the game came out a couple of months later, there were full on interaction.

I also noticed in HFW, various types of foliage reacted differently, some more pronounced than others, which seems more “realistic” based on types.

I guess we’ll see whenever it gets released.

Great then! We better wait. Although I don't care much about that detail or the hair clipping, although it's always nice to avoid them.

She interacts with it plenty enough for me. The nitpicking is ridiculous at this point. I've never seen a better looking game.

Those imperfections only show that it's legit PS5 gameplay not "representative of PS5".

I've seen that one, while its a joy too look at it. It is not a direct comparison between 60 and 30 side by side.

Yup, I think we'll see the 60fps like 1 month before release.

Although the last game is already very impressive. But If they can get this game running 1080P on PS4 without much downgrades then this has to be the most impressive last gen game as far as gfx/visual goes.

I wouldn't call it nitpicking when it stands out like a sore thumb so obviously. Not a deal breaker for me but not great when they've put so much effort in to visauls.
