God of War Sequel and Gran Turismo 7 are Cross Generation Titles

Gone

Looking at Horizon , this is how GOW2 is going to look.

Why is everyone acting like these games look like PS4 games? Even feel like PS4 games?

All their experimental games are PS5 exclusive. Im not quite sure what GT7 needs to be exclusive for? SSD teleportation portals? 120fps and raytracing modes. That is believing in generations.

But it would have looked and played so much better on the PS5
Yes the graphics will be amazing but will be haunted by PS4 mechanics

Again, while I got no issue with the cross-gen personally, I do have to hold the media accountable for just ignoring how they eviscerated Microsoft for openly supporting cross-gen a whiles back. I also kinda have to hold Sony accountable for coyly playing into the whole cross-gen stuff last summer (albeit subtly) when they knew even then that quite a few of their 1P content (including arguably their biggest titles aside R&C (Demon's Souls is more niche, same for Returnal)) was also going to be cross-gen.

That said, this all does show to me that Sony has better timing when bringing out these type of announcements; they're always nested between otherwise strong moments for the brand such as this news coming off quietly after the big strong showing for Forbidden West. Microsoft poorly timed their cross-gen support statement following a May event that had a lot of cool games shown but extremely limited actual gameplay (and none running on a Series X), also following confirmation Halo Infinite was itself cross-gen (and then had its lukewarm showing in July).
You mean Microsoft announced it at the 'right' time giving customers an informed choice about next gen Xbox. While Sony waited until a few million passionate and excited customers boght PS5's before announcing this?.
Maybe from a business standpoint Sony announced at a better time, but for gamers?, nah.

Damn. With the news of all subsequent PS Studios games coming to PC and GoW being cross-gen, it's absolutely heartbreaking to see the new management run into the ground what Andrew House and Shawn Layden had been building up since 2013. The ONLY thing tethering me to buying a PS5 now is the fact that PSN has the largest fighting game userbase. I'm just gonna stick to upgrading my prebuilt PC now.

Imran is basically saying what people with common sense on here and on the internet should know. Games that started development couple years ago did not have final kits yet, and more than likely like God of war started on PS4.

If horizon is anything to go buy, I think people are going to still get amazing uncompromised games. They can make 2 different versions and the difference will be very apparent.

To me if you cant see the next gen difference then sell your PS5.

Sony knows what they are doing. Covid I think made things a little more difficult like Imran lets on. Anything that started in 2019 and on will be next gen only. WHich is why Ratchet is PS5 only it started in 2019. In terms of full production.
Imran is an industry apologist and doesnt have any balls to criticizse the higher ups. Bans people who disagree with him on twitter.

Thats not the case at all. This is cross gen simply because of money. More PS4 owners = more money. Thats it. Has nothing to do with development.

Jim Ryan sees money and nothing else.

Fucking trash move and we will still be waiting for true next gen games to hit well into 2025.

All those titles were supposed to release in 2021, within 12 months of the console's release. All the PS fanboys who had expected them to be next-gen only had been smoking some powerful Moroccan or Afghani shit.
It makes sense business-wise, and even more so under the current covid situation. In fact, I expect this generation to be as long as the 360 one (8 years) due to the relatively slow start. All is good...aside from the pandemic, of course.

It was obvious for GT7 as it did not look like a next gen game at all, God of War is a bit surprising, though.

A buddy who I gave my PS4 Pro to is going to be happy about GT7.

The fact that some are crying over this is down right laughable. HFW was always going to be a cross gen title, especially if it started development in 2017/2018, almost the same for GOW as I doubt they had dev kits at the time. What does it matter? Honestly? If it still looks better than anything the competition can pump out, why cry about it?

Nope… this:
We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features."

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5.

That is... very dissapointing and just sad... I could understand GoW2 but GT7... it's ages since the GT6... they are making GT7 for almost 8 years (8!)... it should have new physics engine, dynamic ToD and weather system... but now? PS4 barely handled GT Sport without these features so there are little chances we will se them now.

The official number was 116.5 at the last update I believe, could be at 120 now. But many of the consoles sold at the start of the generation may no longer be used, some may be broken or in storage etc.
It's an obscure (now) reference to a relatively infamous post back at the start of last gen.

Anecdotal, but demand seems to have dropped off a cliff in New Zealand. You can pretty much walk in and get one at major retailers. A friend who works at JB Hi-Fi is pretty much begging people to come in and pick one up. Seems like the early adopters swooped in and post Christmas everyone is re-evaluating priorities. I know I was going to pick one up but decided to clear some debts instead.

It should go without saying that that goes for the Xbox One as well.

Where did TLoU originally release though? Not the first time they support a previous generation console with a new title.
They've never done it before!

They should have just said, "Only on PlayStation", that way so many people wouldn't be confused or upset about this "news". It wouldn't be misleading at all.
If the GT7 one turns out to be true (coming to PS4 too) they need to be shit on from great heights. It was advertised as PS5 exclusive.

This is true though, visually it’s gonna look stunning (probably even more stunning than Horizon FW). But game design-wise, it’s still designed around the PS4, which is a little disappointing imo.

Now my question is, how many of those 25 exclusives in development are cross-gen?

The fact that Sony said we believe in generations and slid in PS4 afterwards is quite deceiving. Horizon everyone assumed it was PS5 only. Then on the PSBlog it stated PS4. God of War and Gran Turismo 7 Sony didn't say anything. If all these games were cross gen why not just reveal platforms from the get go, then atleast some people who are after those games can delay their PS5 purchase when it gets cheaper as they know they got a ton of games coming to PS4 also.

“We believe in generations”. lmao. I bet that there would more 1st party cross generation titles in the future.
The fact that Sony said we believe in generations and slid in PS4 afterwards is quite deceiving.
Sony never said they were going to avoid crossgen.

In the 'we believe in generations' interview what they said was that they were going to continue supporting PS4 during at least 2 or 3 years after the PS5 release, and that he wanted to see the PS5 games using the next gen features like DualSense features 3D audio, SSD etc. So basically, what they are doing.

And in addition to crossgen games, they are also making next gen only games, like Ratchet, Returnal, Demon's Souls, Astro and Destruction All Stars.

Hermen said they have more crossgen and next gen only games coming.

i wonder if mark cerny and developers are disappointed? 🙀

the ps5 was designed to cut down on mundane hdd partitioning, and was supposed to get a game up in a month or the fastest devtime in a ps.
They have no reasons to be dissapointed. PS5 is easier to develop for than PS4 was, in terms of performance in most gaes performs pretty similar or better than Series X and is getting beter sales and user engagement than PS4. All devs who said something about it is to say they are very happy.

Redarding their HDD usage, it's SSD+related I/O is the best one in gaming, period. Not even top PCs can achieve it. Sure, most crossgen games won't take full advantage of its potential, but in any case they weren't going to do it with their first games because before doing such a huge paradigm change in their first games they migrate their more basic engine stuff to next gen and just scratch the surface of the new stuff.

What should we think about this quote from herman?

how long will jimbo want to support that 110m ps4 owners? 🙀
This worlds are in line of what Sony always said and what makes sense business wise.

In the 'we believe in generations' Jimbo said they were going to support it at least during 2 or 3 years more after PS5 release. There's other big Sony guy who said the same. Hermen said today that in addition to Horizon, GoW and GT7 there are more crossgen games coming (plus more next gen only games like Ratchet or Returnal).

They also traditionally supported their home consoles during ~10+ years. And this case PS4 as of now has almost 100 million MAU and they can't skyrocket the PS5 production, and many people due to the financial crysis won't be able to upgrade soon, so Sony won't skip PS4 soon and they would be stupid doing so.

NeoGAF is going to be pissed when they learn Naughty Dogs Factions multiplayer will be the first PS5 next gen exclusive.
With Ratchet PS5 already has like half a dozen PS5 next gen exclusives on the market.

This is the worst thing they do...

Let PS4 dying... OMG
They have almost 100 Million people playing on PS4 every month, buying games and paying PS Plus. It would be really stupid to let PS4 die when players are still there. It wouldn't make sense.

I don't believe so, but they did for GT7.
They announced it for PS5, but never said it wasn't going be released on PS4. Never said it was next gen only. They just announced the PS5 version back then, and today announced it's crossgen.

Bryank is actually one of the few sony fans who have been highly critical of sony throughout the past year or so.

i only wish MS fans were that harsh.
He has been critical of late I completely agree. This was less directed at him but more the broader community.

I believe a lot of his criticism stems from the fact that he was sold one thing and has watched it backtrack. The issue was he should never have been sold one thing which was never true.

Actually they werent entirely honest. They havent released a single cross gen game so far this generation. Halo is going to be the only one. everything else they have shown in CG form is likely to be 2-3 years away and will be next gen only.

they just didnt have any games for the first two years and used the cross gen excuse to get around it.

both lied, but Sony's lies are worse because Jimbo jumped on that quote from Phil to earn some internet cred while forcing his studios behind the scenes to make last gen games.
Nope. Gears Tactics. It is a cross gen title that released on the X1 and X Series consoles. People forget about it but it does exist.

This delay is fine. The cross gen thing is also fine. It just make me appreciate even more how MS was just upfront. They were attacked but honesty was the best policy.

I certainly care that Sony weren’t properly up front about so many major games being cross gen.

They’ve been totally shown up by Xbox, who at least have been honest about cross gen from day one.

I seriously wouldn’t have bothered buying a Ps5 yet if I’d known so few games would actually be made exclusively for it in its first two years.

I've stopped playing gow on my ps4 pro. I'm fine with 30 fps. Very fine. But gow in the most demanding stages goes well below 30. Its unacceptable and unpleasant. And now I'm supposed to believe the next gen game will run be playable on the ps4 pro?

Hell i wouldnt be surprised if by the end of this gen, the PS5 patched TLOU2 is in the top 20 best looking PS5 games of the gen, maybe even Top 10 lol.
Idk, maybe for their animation work, but not overall. It’s a smaller improvement than TLOU Remastered was from the PS3 edition by just being a 60fps patch.

Considering the relative power of these consoles compared to the latest GPUs, CPUs etc. I think we will see a bigger leap in almost all aspects compared to the last generation consoles. Many developers will show us some seriously crazy stuff. I think TLOU2 will hold up well, but top 20, I seriously doubt it will hold up that well.

Let's say you are a fan of the Gran Turismo franchise it takes 7 years for a sequel to release so basically we will get a true next gen PS5 Gran Turismo once the PS6 starts getting released or announced. God of War we won't see a true next gen God of War until 2026.

Its not just about graphics.

It's about game design. It's about mechanics, systems and level design. Your cross-gen PS5 version can have as many polygons as it wants for its characters, and as many crazy-real animations as it can, but at the end of the day, the mechanics and the level design of the game will have to be made to run on a machine that has a shit 5400RPM HDD.

The games will still be good. But they won't hit the POTENTIAL that they would have had they been designed for the PS5 only.

This was the promise. Its complete bullshit. Cross gen everything, why the fuck did they even bother with a PS5 if youre gonna keep releasing heavy hitters on PS4?

Check the other thread. Herman is bringing all PS5 games to PC eventually. I am gonna sell my PS5 while i can still make a profit and use that $1000 to buy a 3080 either this summer or next year. I can wait a few months to play the 2-3 last gen exclusives they release every year.

the 3080 will run all PS5 10 tflops games at 2x the framerate with better ray tracing and dlss.

Sigh I wish that was the reason. I'll need to resume it some time these days. I'm still in the earlier stages so it has to get better if the reviews are remotely accurate.

They must have switched the copyright © symbol with the asterisk * symbol, and forgot to move it behind the 5 in the marketing photos. That's the only conclusion I have, as it couldn't be a last minute decision. I just hope this means shorter time for ports. As in less time than it took death standing to come to PC.

I don't think they started as cross gen. I think the chip shortage made Sony change their plans. No idea how they will get GT7's lighting engine to work on PS4. It probably also explains the delay.

No where in the above bold text do I see "We believe in ending console lifecycle/video game development once a new platform has be introduced"

The problem is that by targeting 4k, dynamic 4k, 1800p etc, that already takes away a huge chink of the extra gpu bruteforce of these next gen consoles, and thats not even taking into account the fact that devs seem to still be on this 60fps train, with no sign of slowing yet, which in itself takes away another huge chunk of these next gen gpu's power.

Games are not suddenly going to start looking like the UE5 tech demo once cross gen stops, trust me on that lol.

A lot of open-world games play no different than GTA3, a PS2 game. I don't think game design will be impacted in any meaningful way. This isn't like going from the SNES to the PS1, where we had a shift from 2D to 3D. The SSDs in the PS5 and Series consoles just allow quicker loading. R&C has used that to allow for world-hopping. I don't know if anyone has actually described how the SSDs can help a game like HFW, much less GOW and GT7, outside of loading more data.

GT7, in particular is almost literally on rails. All the SSD could possibly do to help that game is loading more data into memory. There's not much of anything new that's going to be added to the racing genre by an SSD. This is a really weird talking point. This forum is often completely detached from reality. I doubt casuals watched the HFW videos and were concerned about the PS4 holding back its visuals. Obsessing over insignificant shit is kinda what this forum does.
