Fastest you’ve ever sold a game?

MGS4

Maybe 30 minutes in, half of which was garbage cut scenes.

Sold it on craigslist within the hour.
I have to say MGS4 has a terrible opening that lasts hours. Once you’re out of that area it gets better quickly. But I totally get it.

Easy..

Sea of Thieves. At launch it was barely more than a pretty sea tech demo.

I actually took it back to my local shop that morning and complained and they gave me the full cost back. The manager had tried it himself and completely agreed with me.

I believe they have added some actual content since though.

Disgusting. Bought at midnight on launch from Asda, taken back at 10am the next day. What a crock of shit.

Mine's probably RE6. Did finish it tho.

Not sure if this counts as sold but I returned Alladin on the SNES after just one day and got motogp instead. Alladin had no replay value.

True Crime sold it the same day I was young and thought this will be an improved GTA.

Destiny, I fell for the hype I thought this would be the defining next gen game, I bought it with a PS4.

Nowadays I make less mistakes like this thanks to reviews, YouTube gameplay videos etc.

This probably doesn’t count, but I cancelled my preorder of Anthem about a day before launch. I had paid full price for digital copy on Xbox live….but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t what it was supposed to be after that beta or demo they released. …it just wasn’t fun..,I was wanting mass effect, but they were giving a Grundy iron man sim (but not as fun as it could be$ with loot. I just didn’t like it, so I refunded. Great decision in retrospect.

Borderlands 3. First, something was off with the controls on PS4, the nothing in the beginning got me entertained. Two hours later, it was for sale and sold the next day. Suck, big fan of BL...

Last of Us. Sold it after reaching winter. Game just barely held my attention and felt stupid for buying into the release hype.

Immortals. Reached the second zone and couldn’t be fussed to see it through.

Amalur. Felt the hype up until the first few couple of hours. Then I realised it is not the “Skyrim killer” I was expecting but an offline mmo. Dragons Dogma turned out to be what I was looking for.

I bet it has aim acceleration and / or a weird acceleration curve.

I have no idea why devs still do this. The biggest and most popular of the lot (BF / COD) have basically no acceleration these days, yet all these other studios think they're special somehow? It's been trash for 20 years, it's not about to change now.

What is the 'aim acceleration'?

In its launch week I bought a used copy of the order 1886 (like two days after launch)... Played it in a day and sold it the next. That game looks great, but it feels claustrophobic, the story is just bad and it's not satisfying to control.

But I'm not as fast as OP.

Ok lets take a step back and look at what NO aim acceleration is. Having no acceleration is what we call 1:1 controls. 1:1 controls basically means one unit of movement in your mouse or joystick equates to one unit of movement on the screen. It's linear, like this:

439207.image2.jpg

This is your optimal state. It's nice, clean, and consistent. Everything else is unpredictable. This is what all games should strive for, however...

A lot of the time, game controls aren't linear. Developers, trying to be too clever, will implement all sorts of crazy ideas. The most common is aim acceleration, which means the further you hold left for example, the faster the cursor goes. So pegging the stick half way may equate to one unit in cursor movement, HOWEVER peg it all the way (double the distance in stick movement) may equate to three units in cursor movement (instead of two). Basically - your cursor moves faster depending on how far you peg the stick.

So it ends up looking like this:

nonlinear_functions_graph_3.jpg

This originated from the early days of console when no one was used to playing with dual analogue controls, so they were trying to find all sorts of unique solutions to help ease people into them. Those days are over, yet developers still cling onto these old concepts for some weird reason, even though industry leading games like BF and COD have largely moved away from them. The very worst examples of this in the industry are Halo 5 and Rainbow Six Siege (console version). They don't only have aim acceleration, but they have acceleration jumps, which means it's not even a curve like you see above...its a wavy line. You'll also find really bad aim acceleration in games like Skyrim. It's an archaic concept and should have been killed off when games like COD and BF showed us how it should be.

Wind Waker. At the time, I was really burned by the chibi look of Link and thought it was just plain bad, even if the graphics were pretty good. I decided to give it a fair chance anyway. I didn't like sailing around instead of walking/riding around an overworld, and the game's new instrument seemed so clumsy and bad compared to the ocarina (which I thought was an unbelievably sweet feature in OOT). It just wasn't the Zelda game I wanted and ended up liking the free bonus disk with Master Quest more.

The only other game I ever returned to the store was Sonic Heroes. This game was the official beginning of the end for the franchise. Ever since this game, the controls and physics in Sonic have been 100% broken. This ruined every single Sonic game since INCLUDING Generations. I played a few levels and felt so angry I returned it the same day -this from a guy with over 200 hours between SA1 and 2.

Last Epoch is the only one I can recall, recently. I'm an absolute stone cold sucker for ARPGs but something about this one just did not click with me... and I like Torchlight 3!!!!!!

I guess I don't buy games in a high enough volume to really experience disappointment to the point of returning them.

I maybe buy a new game once or twice a year. Mostly stick to games I've already invested a lot of time into and have developed a rapport with online blokes (Destiny 2)

Otherwise, yeah when I seldom do buy that new game, often it's not to the point where I'm like NOPE returning it nao!

I usually gut through it and hope it gets better, I acclimate to the gameplay, or whatever my initial complaints are.

Once I complete the game, if I found it less than desirable then I sell it or trade it in. If I liked it, I keep them to replay later.

Greedfall for PS4... Traded it in after about a week. I only just reached the main location. I just couldn't get into it.

Then I stupidly bought for PC, thinking maybe I'll get into it. I haven't. I just don't care enough about it.

I'm sure it's a good game, but my interests just lies elsewhere.

I think i played watchdogs the last one on ps5 for about 40 min.

i took the disc out and returned that shit straight back to amazon.

The last AC on Xbox Series X. Utter trash. I really enjoyed the one set in Egypt. Then I kinda liked the one set in Rome.

This new one though? Just incredibly boring and uninspired. The changed controls did it for me.

Sold and never looked back.

Also Wolfenstein Young Blood. My friend and I both played it together for about 30 mins and then uninstalled fast. That game disgusts my very soul.

Probably a mix of this and average framerate made it unplayable. I remember trying to aim and was having like lag .

Demon Souls PS3. I died early and often and I was out, given was rare and easy to sell used for the same price as new.

The moment I was done with Xenogears, popped open the PlayStation, took the disc out, put it in its case, and drove to GameStop to trade it in. It was the first true JRPG I ever played and the whole point of the genre was lost on me. I just didn't get it.

Three or four years later, realizing I was a stupid child, I bought a new copy.

Doom (2016). 2 minutes into the Mars map, I deleted it.

Would’ve been an instant refund if I didn’t buy it digitally from the PS store.

Mine:

1) De Blob on Wii. After the first time I jumped, I ejected it from the console. Jump was motion controlled. JUMP, yes jump - motion controlled in a platforming game where jumping is the main mechanic? Who the hell thought that was a good idea? Good bye.

2) GTA4. I walked about 10 metres and immediately listed it on eBay. It was the same clunky ass tank controls that still persists to this day in GTAV. I probably didn’t even get more than 60 seconds in this game lol. It’s frustrating to think about how good Rockstar games seem to be but how bad the controls are. I put up with the bad controls in GTA3, SA, VC…but by the time 4 came out I couldn’t take it any longer.
I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes in Mad Max becuase the jump was mapped to the trigger. Of course now I know you can map buttons (this was on xbox360). Something about jump mapped to a trigger made it a bad experience. Heard it was a great game though

Jump Force on One X. It was so bad. Consider myself lucky because not only did I get a full refund the game ended up going to game pass later on

Destiny 2 (I'd played the beta) Purchased a new console that came bundled with it, and traded it in before I left the store.

I traded some 360 game I didn't like at GameStop for $35 and like a week later the retail price dropped to $30 because it bombed. I can't remember what it was.

It could also be good old input delay.

If you have controls that aren't responsive to begin with then throw in an acceleration curve, you end up with one sloppy mess.

Would love to sell my star citizen account. It'll never happen now 🤪. Ey though, that's my one ripoff money learning experience. It could have been gambling, loan debt, etc. I did manage to meet my wife through it, so I won in the end.

But before you judge, remember, you could just as easily fall victim to a dream of yours as well.

No, that's the right attitude to have. Say you went nuts and bought a 20k ship. So what? How many young people go into debt to buy a 50k car? This also fucks them up long term when they go to buy a house or something. A 50k car loan looks much worse on your long term credit history than a digital transaction for which they have no further information about.

Live and learn, you could have done a lot worse.

Incredible Hulk on the Wii (not Ultimate Destruction, that game was awesome). About 4 hours until I realized how borked that game was.
