The Taliban have retaken the country.

I don’t think I’m allowed to link 4ch here, but there’s a Catholic British student from Loughborough University who’s visited Kabul. He’s in the newspapers as well. He’s there for, believe it or not, tourism purposes.

He’s visited because it’s dangerous.

He started posting on Saturday, mere hours before the city fell. He’s also been live-streaming as well.

I’d never normally post something like this, but the 4ch threads are insane and very lengthy. It starts with people debating whether Kabul will fall, as well as people reacting to the absurdity of this guy, to the reaction as it does fall. I feel like I’ve never read anything as mental as this in real time. Some snippets;

It’s currently a monumental screw up by the Biden administration. Allies are scrambling to get their own people back and tens of thousands of refugees to NATO nations are left stranded in the chaos, as they’re at the top of the list for execution and rape.

Everyone was told they’d have months, then weeks, but in the end only got days.

Monumental isn’t a strong enough word. There will likely be multigenerational terrorist attacks against America and western countries for decades as a direct result of this. If you wanted to do one thing that would make the world a shittier place, this would be the thing.

The true scandal is probably the incompetence of getting the allies and afghan translators out but I don't know if the Trump admin would have been any better on those fronts. I think the Taliban still would have steamrolled their way into Kabul.

Afghanistan was always destined to fall to the Taliban once the US left. However it is entirely on the Biden administration for pulling a Zap Brannigan-esque surprise on its allies and creating an international crisis with the Fall of Saigon 2.0.

Don't know if pushing the departure back was politically viable but it probably was.

I don't have the exact time lines of when US troops started to leave but it should have been done in line with the allies. It was very on-brand for the US (especially under the previous administration) to plan for just their departure sadly.

I don't know if it can work, but telling about it on the internet beforehand surely doesn't sound like a good idea. It's like tweeting on your personal account "hey I faked my diplomas on my CV, I hope it will work" before going to a job appointment.
That being said, people going in the midst of danger "to see how it looks like" isn't especially new, many reporters or would-be reporters did it in the past.

It was a really stupid decision. Giving your word and then going back on it is a monumental insult in that part of the world. It pissed off the Taliban. These modern Taliban are smart enough to not go full 7th century out in the open, but I'm sure their fast advance was a direct result of Biden's insulting alteration of the deal.

What a shitshow this whole Afghan situation has become. I actually saw footage of civilians so desperate to escape that they tried to cling on to the side of an airplane that was taking off. They of course fell to their deaths. The real victims will be the girls and women though, they had been going to school, working and living much freer lives, but now they will go back to being slaves.

Well, I think it’s unfair to compare him and journalists. A journalist would have different intentions for example. Miles can post about pissing and a journalist can do an exposé.
