Kinda Underwhelmed by the Graphics on God of War Ragnarock!

Why? It was designed to be cross-gen. The new one that's no longer NORSE will be on an updated engine. Think about it from Sony's POV. They have 110+ Million PS4s. Horizon + GoWR are going to make billions and still look/play decent. They have other studios making some next-gen games. Some studios making cross-gen games. It's pretty well thought-out and balanced IMHO.
Why the fuck should the 20+ million PS5 owners ( when this launches) give a shit about their strategy if they know the game is gimped by cross gen? Sony made a choice to not give their customers the best product so they can make more money. I doubt they originally intended this game to launch late in 2022, but now that it has, this move looks a little worse by a year's worth of PS5 sales.

Represent.

You guys are always underwhelmed by "graphics" one way or another, you guys even shit on Elden Ring for same reason.
Elden Ring looks like absolute dog shit.
It's a ps4 game first and a uprez second. What did you seriously expect?

Can you show me a game in the same genre as GoW Ragnarok that looks better?

In fact can you show me a game running on consoles that looks better?

Did you even watch it in 4k? Game looks amazing for a cross-gen game. Nobody knows what next-gen is supposed to look like.

I bet you was calling Halo Infinite next-gen though.

Horizon Forbidden West undoubtedly looks better.

Theres levels to this shit man, this is why I LOVE Sony 1st Party. They are all in competition with each other, and if you dont bring your A game, your rival studio will eat your lunch. Competition within is unrivaled in the industry.

I'm fine with how GoW: R looked and I can't wait. It should be cross gen so the install base of 100+ million can have access to it especially with PS5 stock being suspect for next year unfortunately.

All in all I'm hyped to Platinum it.

Yes Horizon does look more next gen, but if GOW also comes out in 2022, then Horizon had a year longer development.

I am not shitting on the game. The Game looks good but lets face it. Some of you are such blind fanboys santa montica could take a shit in a box and some of you would love it.

I was expecting a true evolution of graphics. It's a slight mediocre upgrade. To people saying "it's the best looking game ever" or "holy shit it looks amazing" I got to ask if you share traits with this guy

A true generational leap tbh

This to me seems like a game that had a majority of its development done on PS4, and releasing on PS5 was a last-minute decision. Probably why the game was delayed in the first place.
A generational leap from a cross-gen?
Better yet, generational leap this early in the gen. We only start seeing generational leaps midway through the generation.

It's a known fact by know, game development are getting longer each gen, as a lot play's a role in development than just designing the levels.

No one even knows what next-gen is supposed to look like. Can you show me what a generational leap is supposed to look like?

100% it was underwhelming. Yes, because of cross-gen.
It was my first thought upon seeing the trailer and the internet confirmed it. You’re seeing this sentiment everywhere.

It is going to cause a ton of vitriol and really be ants-in-the-pants of the fanboys here who want to defend anything Sony to the death. This place is such a hotbed lately that anything you say is “console warring”.

I actually laughed at how identical it looked to the first game.

Couldn't care less about nu-God of War though, so its whatever to me.

It looked better on my second viewing. My first impression off the stream wasn't as hot. But I am still super hyped for this game!

The part with Freya looked particularly rough though. Hopefully they can do another pass on that sequence for the final version.

GoW3 looked a generation ahead of GoW2. GoW4 looked a generation ahead of GoW3. This looks like a PS4 game with some improvements.
100% spot on.

GOW 3 looked incredible. I never had a PS3, but that game might have the best boss battles I've ever seen in a game. Kratos killing Hades is the best ever.

On a side note for next gen Series X/PS5 games only lookin a bit better than last gen, hey pot meet kettle. I'm a console gamer, but for the million times I hate seeing proud console gamers rag on PC gamers that console AAA games make bigger leaps than PC gamers with the latest cpu/gpu, well lets face it. PS5 and Series X games arent exactly a giant generation above last gen either. Diminishing returns have hit consoles too. And look at that, just as consoles are getting accustomed to x86 specs - just like PC gamers.

Aside from frame rate boosts of BC games and a lot more games being 60 fps, I'd say the overall res, texture, gameplay of next gen console games so far is the smallest improvement ever vs. last gen systems..... at least so far they are.

Game looks like dlc tbh. Many reused assets and animations.

Horizon is a bigger upgrade by far
Looks like a sequel you mean, which it is.

A true generational leap tbh

It's had its whole development done on PS4 because it's a PS4 game that's getting a PS5 update.

Yes I felt it looked quite similar but it was obvious there was more detail in the general environment. Cross-gen game as well so it is what it is.

I guess for the "PS5 GoW" we'll have to wait for 2027 :lollipop_neutral:

Uncharted sequels on ps3 had a bigger upgrade. Forbidden West is also a sequel and has a bigger jump. Not an excuse

God of War came out late in the generation so was already almost as good as you can get graphics out of the aging hardware. God of War is also a much more tightly scripted and linear game.

You literally answered your own question and are crying like a man child. If graphics is all that matters to you in a video game, maybe you don't like video games.

There's Demon's Souls, Ratchet, Returnal, if you want only graphics.

I love God of War on the PLaystaiton 4. One of the best games made period! Infact I replayed it 2 months ago on my PS5.

The issue I have with the Trailer today is it did not wow me. In fact, it looks exactly like God of War on the ps4 pro. I was expecting graphics that dazzled me and really showed an evolotuion of the game but didn't see any of that in the trailer shown today. I know the game isn't finished and they didn't show much but it's unusual for a game to look dramatically different from it's initial game play reveal. I will no doubt be buying the game day 1 but kinda depressed the game doesnt look like a huge leap forward graphically.
The huge leap was already made. There are no more huge leaps. So get used to it.

I'll wait for a comparison. People tend to remember games differently, even me, Alan Wake looks the same as PC version in my head but I'm sure it's not.

This situation is a bit like GOW 2 on the PS2 but not really. GOW 2 came out in 2007 and had PS2 graphics that were almost on par with the PS3 launch graphics.

Character models are definitely a weak point and look like PS4 grade meshes with some extra texture detail (especially Boy). The recycled snowy forest and giant lake looked eerily similar to a AAA PS4 (probably very little reworking done to them), but the new area's environmental geometric density, clutter, and textures looked strong. I wasn't picking my jaw off the ground or anything, but there were some impressive shots in the sizzle reel. When you got cross gen and 60fps, a 10TF machine's simply not going radically outperform a PS4 Pro. The vast majority of the extra "next-gen" power (70-80%+) is spent turning 30FPS into 60FPS.

It's a bit tough, while I admit it doesn't look amazing, the article was so high from the ps4 pro version of the last game its hard to be impressed. I think regardless, overall it will be a fantastic looking and playing game.
Everyone be happy. 😉

I've been told, by people who must know what they're talking about, that there are a lot of compromises that must be made to get the game running on last gen hardware.

Can't imagine a company that would do that for their flagship titles.

That's not how game design, or software design in general, works.
The fundamentals are what comes first and if those work on PS4 then they were designed for it, lest you want to reboot your projects and bleed money. Upscaling is rarely an issue, downscaling is.
It absolutely can work that way. Games get reworked to work on other hardware, even less powerful hardware all the time.

What? Game looks good enough, lmao... and I don't even play Sony games so I'm not hyped, the game looks good, idk how else people expect games to look like

It's still a ways off.....

But 2018 already looked incredible, if you think they won't use the power here to do some amazing things...just wait.

Everyone with a brain knows SMS are incredibly talented. It will be on display.

Why is a game that started dev in mid 2018, only 2.5 years from launch, a cross gen game in the first place? It's ANTI-consumer to all the PS5 owners who paid at a minimum $500 for Sonys console thinking gow was a PS5 title as it was originally revealed.

This is Sony's FIFTH launch. They have sold 150 million consoles before. They never gave two shits about those users after they launched their successors. They are shafting PS5 owners with games that literally look like PS4 games 2 full years after launching the PS5. Simply unacceptable.

Even third party studios have gone back and added ray tracing in games like control, doom, dmc and re8. Miles has better looking hair and ray tracing. this game literally looks identical to the ps4 version that came out years ago. Unacceptable.

Then you need to realize how long there next game is going to take to be created and boom you are in the PS6 gen.

It's an expansion, just like Miles Morales and the secuel of Breath of the Wild.
Quite disappointing for the debut of the most important IP on a new gen console.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
it does not look the best, but its a big improvement from PS5 god of war game.

Just played it not long ago, and i can see the difference. You need to check your eyes if you think it looks the same.

I guess in eyes of graphics whores, most games looks like “dog shit” but I take that Elden Ring’s “dog shit” visuals over most AAA games.

Don't waste your time explaining things to people that don't want.

IMO is Santa Monica to blame. They could and should moved to artistic design, but I remember playing GOW 2018 on my base PS4 and be blow alway.

I don"t felling the same as when GoW 2018 release on PS4 if what I saying make sense to you. Sony standart are graphics, they should accept this actual sittuation and give the time pursuit more art direction... Like Bloodborne did and like Elden Ring is doing.

Is this a joke? Literally the best looking game I've ever seen, to the point where I question how it can possibly be cross gen.

Mind you, Horizon FW and FH 5 both make me think that, too, so I shouldn't have been surprised.

Lol that's the one I think is underwhelming. Looks great in parts, average in others.
You forgot the /s there. Either that or you're fucking blind.

I think it looks pretty solid. Like what a PS5 Remaster for GOW would look like.
More or less what I expected after learning it was going to be cross-gen.

Yes, what the trailer showed in terms of graphics and gameplay, is very much a continue from the first installment.

We will need to see more to judge.
