Bloomberg: Microsoft will keep publishing Activision titles on PlayStation

Your first post I replied to said about forcing. Nothing should it should be natural as Sony fans have always stated. The PS brand will still be as strong as ever, maybe this could make Sony and Microsoft work together a bit?

I mean force Sony to buy/build more studios, not force existing studios. Expanding current studios is also a thing. Japanese publishers are also acquirable.

People who buy a PlayStation primarily for Call of Duty would sell their PlayStation and move to another platform to keep spending money to play it. I believe NeoGAF likes to refer to these folks as "casuals."
There definitely is some validity to that.

If MS bought Capcom, that would likely force me to go the MS route. That or get a PC. I'd probably go the MS route though because consoles are more convenient, at least to me they are.

But yea, this definitely will get some people to shake up what console they choose to game on but hard to say how many people will leave Sony. Owning all the consoles is the best choice but some of us just don't game enough to warrant multiple console purchases.

Curious if anyone has outright said, "well shit, I need to buy an XBOX now..." I haven't seen anyone say that on gaf but there's gotta be people like that somewhere.

I’m feeling exactly like that for the past 2 or so hours. Really depressed. Sony loyalist since PS1 but it seems it is time to jump from this sinking ship. I just can’t decide should I do it immediately (sell PS5, buy Series X) or wait until these games start arriving exclusively on Xbox (that could take years).

They won't make CoD exclusive. Bethesda games like Starfield, Elder scrolls etc. are mostly SP. Maybe with an MP component. But CoD is an online service with a steady income stream.

if they make CoD exclusive they win the console war, straight up. so why not do it?

Can't tell if you're trolling or not, lol, but if you're being serious, stay strong my friend.

Just save up some money and get that Series X down the road, you'll be all right.

Looks to me like this years COD will be the last on PS, maybe the year after tops

Warzone will continue to be supported until 2023 COD when they'll release warzone 2.0 along side it and cut PS loose. As above, the year after top's.

Same arguments as Bethesda deal, no way they start releasing stuff on playstation and give their main competitor a 30% cut.

Long game here for MS they said so themselves, loosing the Playstation sales of COD is chump change to them in the long run.

Why people always think somebody is trolling? It’s really weird. Can’t you state your honest emotions and not be mocked or something? I mean, I’m sure there are hundreds of thousands of Sony exclusive gamers all around the world thinking like this right now. Well, that is the whole point of these acquisitions, to make people switch from one side to another.

I bet a ton of people would buy a Series S just to play CoD
I was strongly considering buying a Series S last weekend cause it was in the store, no need for it, just a desire to own a nex-gen console. But then I remembered I have aDSL internet speed and was like "fuck, it'd take like 2 weeks to download a single game...."

lol.

Wooooah. I wasn't trying to be snarky, I was trying to be nice. That's a genuine post, stay strong brother. You'll figure out what the right path is for you, everything will be alright in the end.

I think that they make it interesting, but Europe would simply stop playing CoD or just play it on PC.
I think you underestimate just how many people play COD and only COD. I'd say plenty would buy an xbox, at least an S to play. Its a system seller no doubt (if its a decent entry).

Zero chance once the dust settles anything new is coming to PS unless its an existing GAAS, unless of course gamepass comes to PS but the chances of that happening are also close to zero.

I have no skin in this game btw i own both.

Totally.

I dont play COD much anymore as I'm burnt out from playing it since COD2! But not every gamer has played so much over the years.

And as you said some gamers spend tons of time on it. I did too. That era of COD4 to Black Ops 2 (5 years) there is no doubt in my mind I spent probably 80% of my time playing COD. Other games get time too, but once youre done with them youre done. After I beat Mass Effect games and I have zero interest to play it again with a different character. With shooters, you just log back in for more MP matches.

For FIFA fans same thing.

I'd like them to move to a 2 yearly release cycle if im honest. I wasn't ready to leave MW2019 behind, i was in a decent spot before they abandoned it.

Make a COD release more of an event, release Halo expansions, Doom and the rest in the off years or something. Plus that might release some of the decent support studios to make other stuff. The amount of FPS studios MS have now is borderline illegal. They'll be basically competing against themselves come the end of each year.

Anyways slight off topic, carry on.

Nope.

They paid a shit ton of money to add value to the Xbox brand.
Emphasis on "brand", not hardware.

In the future, when Microsoft moves 100% towards cloud streaming, then yes, they will keep those games locked into their service.
But for now and for the next 7~10 years or so, those existing franchises will keep being released on other platforms. Newer ones might not though.
If they still release everything going forward on Playstation then they add zero to the brand. They are not paying $70 bill for game pass access.

Can't believe we are beating this dead horse again.

I'll only point out MS bought Mojang and Minecraft games still appear on Playstation and Minecraft is the world's best selling game. If they really wanted Playstation and Nintendo to "suffer" they'd turn around and say no more support for PS5 and Switch after 1.19 or somesuch.

Minecraft always gets given as an example in these kind if talks but there are 2 things you need to take into account. Minecraft was already on Playstation when Microsoft bought them, and people close to the deal said that there were stiipulations involved with the sale, and those being that Minecraft, and all furutre Minecraft related games, stay multiplatform.

Playstation has a huge fanbase, there's too much money to lose in not releasing games on their platform.

Like I said, they have a short term strategy, and a long term one.

By the time the deal completes we will be in or near the time that Call Of Duty goes next gen only, at that point the 120 million PS4 owners become irrelevant in that discussion and they will buy their next console for Call Of Duty, that will be an Xbox.
This is a very long term move.

I can see existing deals - like the marketing deal Sony has for COD - running down, guaranteeing those titles on PlayStation. So, no, I don't think COD is going exclusive just yet. However, new titles, brands, or series? Yeah, I think they'll go exclusive. Warzone 2, Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 as an Xbox / PC exclusive? What a world.

MS will make money off of PlayStation sales, they'll make more from that than they do COD being on game pass.

Not really. The mass amount of casuals that they are going to bring into gamepass, XBL subscriptions & and/or game purchases from COD alone more than offsets keeping it on PS.

The whole point of these purchases is to bring people into the MS eco system. They didn't purchase them to keep the status quo.

Nope. Unless Sony allows Game Pass on Playstation those games are not coming to PS. You should have figured this out the first go around with Bethesda!

Really, I think it could go either way. I also think the purchase price is a bit of an afterthought for them at this point. Bruce Springstein just sold all his songs to Sony for like half a billion, and most of his audience will be dead in 20 years. It's going to be for licensing in movies, commercials, presidential campaign ads, and putting remakes on elevators.

MS buying a $50 billion company for $70 billion means they get to keep a $50 billion asset. They're really only spending $20 billion as long as it doesn't drop in value. If it increases in value, the amount they spent is even less. MS stocks and Activision stocks have already gone up, which takes a chunk off that $20 billion right there. They pull in at least $1 billion a year if not more, profit. Over the next 20 years, just owning that license will basically pay for itself, regardless if they put it on Gamepass or not. They could just have it day one on Gamepass and think that is enough of a contrast to the $70 or more it'll cost on PS.

Similar to the Minecraft purchase in that case.
It could go either way in the future. Nothing stays the same. But we are talking about YEARS. For years and years this content will be exclusive to Xbox. I guess there may be a small minority out there that will hold off and wait for it to possibly come to PS, but for most people that want to play the latest Call of Duty or Bethesda game, they'll be buying an Xbox. Who knows what will happen in the future in this space? But for the short term (next 5-10 years) you gotta buy an Xbox if you want to play those games.

Who knows what happens in the next 2-3 years. We might see Game Pass on PS Platforms by then. I think having a first party only Game Pass on PS5 could work for both parties. I didnt think that the Bethesda deal would push Sony to accept it, but CoD might do it.

I imagine he is saying this for now to avoid some kind of immediate boycott of CoD or something like that.

The only way I see these games coming to PS in future (after contractual obligations) is if they decide, sand Sony let them, bring Gamepass to PlayStation, which I think is a more likely scenario after this acquisition.

But that's the thing. MS acquiring Activision isn't really taking anything away from anyone it forcing anyone to switch. In the worst case scenario the games won't be on Switch and PlayStation but everywhere else including mobile and PC. Plus MS is the only one making a budget console that would make a fantastic companion to a PS5. This really only potentially affects people who refuse to play games anywhere BUT PlayStation and I'd imagine those people really only play Sony games so they too wouldn't be affected.

A lot of people have and will have PS5s too.
The thing is, this gen's ship has already sailed. People that bought PS4 last gen will very likely buy a PS5.

Microsoft knows that it's important to both make people perceive value in Xbox's brand again, and to not make people hate Microsoft for taking their games away.
So for this gen they will play nice (for already existing franchises), to both not be hated and to get some money from consumers from other platforms too.

Next gen is rumored to be the cloud streaming generation, and this gen to be the last console generation (for Xbox and Sony, that is)
That's when Microsoft will announce their cloud service, and that it will the only place you'll be able to play those games from franchises Microsoft has acquired.

Everything they're doing now is to add value to their future cloud subscription service, and to get fans from all platforms to see that as well.
Not true at all. Why would those casual gamers that only play the newest COD continue to buy a console that does not have the latest game? As of today those folks are moving into the Xbox ecosystem. How else will they play the latest COD games? These casual gamers are not going to buy a PS5. They will move en masse to Xbox. If people that bought the previous console are locked in we would not have seen so many folks move from Xbox to PS last gen. People do move. They go where the games are. And they games are on Xbox.

Don't believe it. 70 billion, advantages galore. He has to say this NOW, but they reserve the right to do whatever, however once the deal closes. They won't remove Warzone, and will keep supporting playstation for specific games and deals, but there will absolutely be exclusives. Don't think it won't happen because it will. They'll play nice initially.

That's the thing, Activision basically make one game, and that game will absolutely be exclusive to the eco system. People who think otherwise are deluded. As soon as you can say "fuck off Bobby" shits not coming to Playstation. Simples.

This is strange to me - I understand the allegiance thing, and the power of preference, but I don't really like Sony yet I own a PS5 for the exclusives I do want to play. It's not difficult or unattainable. Like I owned a PS4, PS3, PS2 and original PlayStation. If I buy a Multiplatform game it's always on Xbox, but if it's not on Xbox at all I buy it on PlayStation.

Just buy an Xbox? Or a PC? Or use XCloud? Why would you only play them if they are on PlayStation? There's no principle in play here, and Sony don't care about you as much as you care about them, so just buy an Xbox (unless you really can't afford it I guess) and you don't even have to care. Microsoft seem to be embarking on a shock and awe policy to end the console wars so it might be time to reconsider those entrenched positions and just enjoy the games?
