Sony is offering Bungie employees a $1.2 billion incentive program in an effort to keep them at the company following the buyout.

This seems strange to me but from what you guys are saying this is actually pretty normal. I guess it makes sense, really shows how much Sony values the talent. A third of that seems like quite a lot but I'm glad the devs are getting well paid. More incentive on them to deliver whatever it is they will be working on in the next few years.

Most of it is two years as Sony is prepping for it. And sounds like payment to me. The employees just got to wait it out. Where does it say any of it is for health and retirement plans etc....? You really think 900 employees across $1.2B of incentive bonus (over $1.2M per employee on average) is going to get most of it in back end health and retirement plans? lol

Even though they might have to wait even 5 years for it, that's still $1.2M per employee to make them stick around.

That is exactly what I said.

I can give you examples:

- At IBM the employees received $1000 in IBM shares but you could not sell them before 5 years… I worked for near 10 years there so I could sell it and get the money few years before left.

- Again at IBM they give me a retirement plan where they put 8% of my Salary in that plan every month… I could only get that money if I stay working with IBM at least 3 years… if I left before the money was back to IBM.

- Another example… I got more than one certified course in $2000-8000 range paid by IBM but I have to sign doc saying I will stay at least 2 more years after the certification.

And so go on… deferred payment doesn’t mean direct payment… it is most incentives and not bonus.

Is this normal for a buyout or did they think Bungie employees would not like the news of no longer being independent?
As someone who’s been on both sides of an M&A and on due diligence teams. This is normal.

I know people who work at PlayStation and it’s a completely different culture than what I’ve read about Bungie. And regardless of all of the promises Sony makes them things WILL change. I’m not saying it will get worse (most of Sonys now first party companies seem healthy) but it just might not be what people want because change is hard. So why not go to a new company with higher pay and change there.

There’s also the possibility that a lot of Bungie employees stock vested soon as Sony made the deal.

Those few things combined cause people to leave for greener pastures.

This is pretty normal , sometimes if it's non-gaming company the'yll even promote the current CEO to be some high up exec position to keep them.
so a third of that cost is just bribe money for them not to leave?

this deal sounds worse and worse the more we find out, looks like there's not much real asset that Sony got out of this deal
It's not bribe money, it's incentive so people don't retire or go start their own game company or even any type of copmpany. People leave companies after getting acquired espcailly if you own shares and reaped the rewards. A bunch of these guys are getting millions of dollars when the deal goes through. Look at a lot of game studios over time and look at how many founders and key people have left over time. It's happened to companies like Naughty Dog, Bioware and Rare where a bunch of key people left because they had a shit ton of money to do other stuff. It's same reasaon why CEOs get such big bonuses/raises becasue you don't want them gettting bored of the job or taking what they made so far and going out. $1.2 Billion obviously is over multiple years and not given all at once but a fraction at a time. IT's common for big companies to throw money at people to keep them if they think they are important. Microsoft for example gives their top non-exec employees hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep them from switching to toher companies.

Opting to put it into stocks, funds or pensions etc would be pretty common. They're not going to get most of it in 2 years if they just want cash. It's why they say they're willing to go that high. Its if you opt for other schemes

It is a ton, but there's also going to be a ton of caveats like with the IBM example that'll lock them in or incentivise them to stay for longer than just a few years.

Sony is smart to take care of the talent. It’s the most important part of any acquisition, more so than any IP.

I think that’s why so many of Sony’s acquisitions have worked out well while other big acquisitions by their competitors have flopped.

That's a lot of faith in the company where apparently in this industry even the best devs are only as valuable as there last game, which I don't agree with but..ahem, CD Project.

Microsoft shocked investors today coming off of the Sony purchase of Bungie when they bought all of the employee contracts for $1.3 billion, and immediately moved to the newly created Bunjee studio.

"This is not a move against Sony, we're just looking for the best talent in our company to provide as worthwhile an experience for our customers as possible," an employee who wishes to remain nameless said as he stroked his electronic green rodent pet.

A signficant percent of it will go to top talent. The CEO of Bungie is likely getting a big part of it and across multiple years. The deal likely lasts 4 years MINIMUM , might be even longer becasue game projects have extremely long dev circles. It's not a lot when you realiaze top execs at toher companies make a shit ton of money and if you don't want people to leave you have to pay them compeitively.espcailly the people who just got really rich from owning private shares and could just go start their own restaurant, retire or do something random. If you just got $50-200M dollars you aren't as incentivized to work another year for another $1M compared to if you were offered $10, 20,30M. You gotta incneitvize them to stay. that's why you hear about CEOs getting their compensation double sometimes because they don't want them to get bored and go off and do something else so you entice them with money. You also don't want them being offered $2,3,4,5 million to go work for another game company. You have be compeitive too.

That's so fuckin weird to me. Bungie has never been that much of an exceptional cluster of wizards IMO. Historically more talented then 343 for sure, but billions-worth? Nah. But what do I know, I'm just flinging notions around.
The online infrastructure of Destiny is nothing short of genius. It's practically an MMO that runs almost 100% on P2P networking, with barely any real servers behind it. Bungie are the only studio to have managed to do it at that scale.

Not weird at all. My company bought a company that makes a companion product with our software and part of the stipulation of the buyout was that the owner/creator of the product sign a three year contract with us. He probably made high seven figures on the deal so he's not complaining.

Bungie just got bought out for literally billions. If some of the leads split and go make their own new IP and hit it big, they might all be billionares in a few years.

Gaming is hot right now.

Talent means nothing, if you can't retain them.

Sony has to absolutely retain those talents. We saw what happened to rare, once those top bras left the studio.

They could have taken the money, and leave. This way they can make a new studio together. Sony doesn't like that option, from what we have seen with this money now.

Bungie is useless without top bras talents.
If they leave now, Sony would have useless studio, like how MS ended up with Rare. Rare didn't make games like they used to do. And only started their own new universe. But it took them 15 years to reach that.

A lot of the top talent is actually STILL at Rare, believe it or not. What left was creative freedom. They finally have it for the first time under this new Microsoft. Sea of Thieves even launched like it did likely to lack of funding. I suspect that stuff changes going forward.

MS bought it 2002. They had their big success in 2017. That is a long time in the gaming industry. They basically waited OG xbox, xbox 360 and mid xbox one to have a big hit.

Sony can't afford that. Right now, it's either ride or die. They need FPS desperately, before Activision deal is finalized. Those talents at bungie can assist Sony studios on how to do proper live service game. Destruction was a shit. They don't want that mistake.

Heck I don't even think the same team that worked on Destiny worked on Destiny 2.

Bungie is very volatile that way.

When you think about it, though, GaaS games aren't just about coding in terms of raw technical coding wizardry, but also marketing and entrepreneurship. You'd be surprised how long the game industry as a whole has progressed when these two skillsets were not only separate, but often held by people internally opposed to each other. (IE: SoJ vs. SoA during the 90's was for the most part "Skilled artistic coders that can't sell anything vs. expert salesmen that can't figure out how to generate a decent chiptune". Nintendo during the NES-N64 era was ran by Yamauchi a corporate guy who gradually lost touch with the developers which is why certain things turned out how they did and he was replaced by Iwata.)

It's especially nice in the modern day after the AAA gaming industry previously spent multiple console gens trying to treat "skilled developers" like they were universally disposable, interchangeable cogs to see something resembling a reversal in that trend.

The leadership of Bungie are probably taking 75% or more of that

well, isn’t that interesting. I guess Sony thought a lot of staff would leave. Maybe it is a sign that the majority of staff want to be independent. It looks that way from how fast Bungie we’re to get ahead of everything as soon as the acquisition was announced.

hopefully the staff at Bungie enjoy their time there and reap the rewards too. I cant see how they are going to be able to support destiny 2, launch a new ip and assist Sony in making 10 gaas games when they struggled in maintaining one game.
