Is Horizon Forbidden West broken on regular PS4's?

I figured I would create this new thread because in reality most of the gaming world ditched HFW for Elden Ring. I'm just now getting back into it and after spending several hundred hours in Elden Ring the lag on the button input for virtually any action from the option menu UI to Aiming/Shooting is so far off when I'm pushing buttons. I'm trying to relearn this game but visually it's jarring and the button response is so bad this is an honest an open ask to other PS4 users if this is a legit thing happening or if maybe my personal system sucks. Any bit of overwhelming action on-screen seems to be overwhelming the performance on the console that was never the case with HZD.

Example: Rotate the camera to aim at a target, everything goes super blurry I go into aim but there's a significant delay from when I pull Left Trigger to aim that it actually meets up with this

Example: In Option Menu trying to cycle between different weapons and their subclasses and it's almost like rubber banding on my button inputs

Example: All field of vision becomes completely blurred from short to long distance when running in a straight line

Example: Options Menu: switching from one category to the next (in virtually any category scrolling up or down) entire game locks up 2-3 seconds?

Again not a slander on the game, asking if this is just the expected performance on a standard PS4 console

Real tips:

Try playing with the controller 1-2" from the console to see if it's a Bluetooth issue.

To counter the blurriness try setting your TVs sharpening setting to maximum and turn on all noise reduction settings to their max setting.

The sluggish could be caused by your own slow brain, try drinking a couple of energy drinks before playing, or a triple Vietnamese coffee, heavy on the condensed milk.

Your PS4 may have gone gay, you can either embrace the gayness or call a console conversion therapist to reverse the process, beware though if you do the latter the console may become even more gay but only when you're out of the room. Set a camera to capture the gay action.

Lastly, to fix the rubberbanding issue, try connecting the triggers to your elbows with actual ubber bands.

n.b - I appreciate your not slandering the console with your liquids.
I love the fact that this forum has a sense of humor. I had to wake up really early to do some shit, I'm tired and I hate everything... But this post made my day. Thank you, truly.

how blurry? because the game uses dynamic res, at least on PS5, and I had some moments even on PS5 where the game legit looked like 720p (I think I have a screenshot of that... I should upload that some time, looked hilarious)

also, delay, I mean, does the game have siginificant input lag on PS4 maybe? wouldn't be the first game by this team that has unbearable input lag *cough* Killzone 2 *cough*

maybe the PS4 version is just not great, and barely able to run on base PS4? because what you describe here sounds just like a game that runs poorly on old hardware

People have become a bit defensive about this game it seems?

it's a pretty mediocre game, and ever since Elden Ring dropped that became even more apparent. so maybe lol

This is why I wait to buy games. Let them patch the issues out. Though I don't expect new games to ever run well on 2013 hardware. If there was no stock shortage, sony probably would have cancelled the PS4 version altogether.

PS4 has 10 times less TFlops than PS5, half the RAM and god knows how many times slower HDD.
So i guess some sacrifices must be made in order for it to work on previous gen hardware. That bluriness sounds like its added seek time from the HDD. If you have an SSD try running it from that one

Like your feeble little mind.
C'mon the game was very buggy on PS5. It was the buggiest first party Sony game I have ever played. Maybe it is better now but I played at launch and with the first patch. I had lockups and once lost the use of the X button until I rebooted. I would classify that as being a little broken. I mean it was playable, but not polished to the level of quality that it deserves insults when people joke about performance.

The game has actually received praise for how well the PS4 version runs considering that it is 2013 hardware. I would say it's time to upgrade to the PS5, but that seems to be the one thing that has yet to become readily available.

Bunch of humourless cheese heads in here jeez, all issues OP describes are most likely just SW/HW issues outwith the game/PS4, with TV or Bluetooth, etc.

We don't have remotely enough information to solve the "issues", where is OP btw? Funny they didn't return to reply to the thread 🤔

Actually the base PS4 has 18% of the TF of the PS5 (1.84/10.28). So just below 1/5, far from 1/10. There are different flops though, and in practice the PS5 is of course more than 5x as powerful as the PS4 overall. But yeah.

Come on don't patronize me. That guy never played the game, and he's telling me, a guy that has 100 hours on the game that it's BROKEN. Also this one wasn't the buggiest first party Sony, Days Gone was, and it was still a blast, far faar away from broken.

Did you updated the game to latest patch? Most of these problems that you're describing were present when the game was released but then fixed in subsequent updates. The game was a mess at launch on base PS4, to be honest. Pop-in textures, loading screens appearing out of nowhere mid-gameplay etc. But it was fixed after a couple of patches.

No. It performs well, looks great and the controls are very snappy. I don't know what are the issues you're having, as they're very poorly explained and you vanished from the thread, but they're probably a problem on your setup

Might want to recheck your math. 10.3/ 1.84 != 10.
Edit: beaten.

I haven't played it since I finished it, though I do intend to go back to it eventually. The last I remember it plays fine for me on PS4 but there was one occurrence where their was so much stuttering it was going in slow motion. Some other mild stuttering issues but for the most part it played fine. It could have possibly been performing better being installed on an external SSD.

Expected the fellow dipshittery in here what I've found over more play time is that it does seem to improve in responsiveness after about 30 minutes of running in the game world but for some reason until the PS4 has been running for awhile it's very poor to react

Tried different controllers, it's not that

Visually the blur stuff is nonstop, I guess that's just a "feature" designed to hurt your eyes. Baffles me if companies still have Q/A testers, not a single fucking person raised a flag on this from PS4 to PS5

Issue is definitely with my old console, probably have to wait for the PC port to enjoy the game properly

Game is incredible.

Don't listen to this weirdo.

Yeah; a couple of annoying spots here and there aside I've been enjoying my time with it quite a lot.

Also OP, I'm playing the game on PS4 base as well and haven't had any of the issues you're talking about. There are some moments where a load may lag but keep in mind these are systems with slow-ass HDDs in them (if you haven't upgraded yours, anyway) and given how demanding the game is that's to be expected. It's never been something that's happened more than a couple times in hours-long sessions.

Have you updated to the latest patch? It's been available for a while now and addressed a lot of smaller performance issues. I've not had any of the issues with bluriness or whatnot that you're bringing up. I'd suggest you look into your television display settings, maybe check your HDMI cable for faults, maybe test it out on a different television, or look into any HUD and display options of the game you might've changed or could use a change to match the specs of your television model.

I'm assuming the issues you bring up are genuine, anyway. If so hopefully these tips serve of some help.

I doubt it's your console unless it's in really poor shape. The PS4 I'm on isn't exactly the most well-kept but I've had none of the issues you mentioned in the OP. That said, it's always left on Rest Mode (at least, for the most part) so that might be a part of the reason why.

If you run your PS4 the same way and have those issues, then it's most likely your television display, and/or settings you've calibrated on there.

don't troll.
It's perfectly fine on ps5. At least I had no major bugs or crashes when played on release.
if you are saying that performance mode sucks then I might agree but that's a problem with this gen... the damn modes
Totally surprised how bad perf mode looked. This was just after finishing the frozen wilds dlc on PS5…booted HFW at launch and refunded after a few minutes.

Probably will get the PC version down the road, but I’ve heard lots of negatives on the game. So maybe on sale.

The word « unplayable » is only mentioned once in the thread and that’s in your post. Imagine calling others shills when you yourself put words in their mouth.

Still cannot believe the defensiveness around this game. And that’s with some of the most ardent defenders of the brand currently in the penalty box. Incredible.

Calling whole game broken means pretty much unplayable.

Pretty hard projecting there, why does this game get to your feels?

Pretty weak comeback but ok I can see you did your best with that laughing person gif.

Summary of the helpful advice in this thread:
- OP is a Russian troll
- it’s a coordinated effort to post weekly threads about this game
- OP’s console is gay lmao (get it? GAY)
- Switch to a different version of the game
- Switch to a different TV
- it’s your setup
- it’s fine actually

But I’m projecting when I see defensiveness.

Why are you surprised? It's an exclusive game and some people take criticism on those like an attack on a family member. I will never understand this and even think this behaviour alarming, but each to their own.
