So, obviously they had Dan Ryckert and Jeff Grub lined up and it wasn't a surprise. So seems like either Jeff planned on quitting suddenly and didn't tell anyone, or the management planned on firing him as they got new staff in. I don't really see why they would do that, because that would make the new staff morale start really low and risk them quitting. The only possibility of that working well would be if the new hires knew they planned on getting rid of Gerstmann. If there was bad blood between Jeff and Dan, maybe that could happen.

To me, the most likely possibility is Jeff suddenly quit.

It's crazy to think about the dudes leaving Gamespot to follow Jeff to GiantBomb. Now that he's left Giant Bomb, there's no one following him this time. It is absolutely insane that there is zero visibility as to what happened.

Yes, he is petty like that. Nobody new (users) has been coming to GiantBomb for ages because of his terrible humor and pointless videos, and a lot of his staff don't like him because of his weird management style and anti-social behavior. He's not a guy to lead a website, he's not built for that, he's a commentator.

Departures have always been announced in advanced and there has been a good bye stream. There's nothing for JG except the post by the Gb staff that is barely even about JG. He's the guy who started the website after being canned from Gamespot for not catering his review score to the advertisers FFS.

Nothing about this says they parted ways amicably. When people give notice, people are made aware in advance. When someone is fired, the announcement goes out after they're already out the door. Jeff was the latter, seemingly.

He also could’ve been planning his exit (I mean he’s got all his shit lined up, he’s got his own podcast and patreon and sponsors going already) and somehow didn’t agree to exit terms and that’s why it happened suddenly. I can understand the secrecy, if he’s under an NDA he could stand to lose a lot by talking about it and most companies won’t publicly say anything about internal HR matters except confirming employment date start and end

I laughed so hard the first time I watched that video. I have to admit I haven’t watched a video or listened to their podcast for years( shortly after Ryan died) but Ryan and Jeff were a pretty funny comedy team and I do look back fondly on those times.

He sounded happier than he has in years today. Love or hate Jeff, he knows more about the gaming industry than any of the journalists and streamers.

Yes. He has been a game journalist, reviewing games for a very long time. He got fired for reviewing Kayne & Lynch by GameSpot. He started Giant Bomb afterwards. He had a very entertaining podcast on there for many years, website, etc. Him leaving the company he created is pretty big news. He was the heart and soul of Giant Bomb. He was the voice of Giant Bomb. I can’t imagine anyone else doing the ads on their podcast.

For gamers of a certain age and mindset, the Giant Bomb crew are the gaming friends they never had, though i could be projecting a bit. Not a huge following today, but GB made an impact on some people, thats for sure. The discussion of changes within GB is usually lively if not widespread

Jeff probably not sure how much patrons he is going to get; imagine if Nextlander only have 1-2k increase after Jeff joined, he would be reducing the cut everyone else going to get. If the patrons increased by a lot, then he would be losing out. Money can ruin friendship, going independent is the less risky/drama option for him.
