79% of PS5/PS4 games sold during Sony latest fiscal quarter were for digital version

True. There will always be sales and discounts on the digital front especially to help companies make more money, but the companies generally dictate when these discounts or sales happen. Physical games are almost always significantly cheaper and are even permanently reduced normally. I just prefer having more control over what I pay for games and with digital you have to generally wait for your favorite games to get discounted.

Yeah, I'd never argue that you can't find some great deals at retail. Especially on titles that weren't quite as "big" as anticipated.

Since the game industry is mostly aimed at kids, teens, young adults. it doesn't make a difference since most young people are always online and have no issue buying things digitally. They'll just use their mom's credit card to buy the games full price on the digital store, they don't really price-shop around or anything like on eBay or Amazon.

I feel like most of us who still like physical games are decreasing in number, mostly because we're older.
Older and smarter.

I’m someone that always tries to buy at the lowest possible price and most of the time those prices are physical copies. Very rarely do I see a physical copy be more expensive than a digital one. I guess that’s why my physical library is a lot bigger than my digital one.

Maybe for console yes.

But for PC Steam/GOG, I'd say no. The deals are so incredible, there's no way computer games back in the day on shelf were this cheap. You never saw PC games at 80% off for $4.99.

If console games became 100% digital, you never know. The deals might get even better replicating Steam.

It's a weird thing because with Steam and GOG dominating PC sales (I dont think any store or studios even sell physical PC games anymore except perhaps some COD or Sim games with a download code), you'd think with such dominance they'd keep prices high as there's only so many PC e-stores someone can get games. But Steam (dominant e-store) has had rock bottom deals for ages.

I advertised for Google Stadia
PlayStation has great sales year round. I know physical games can be even cheaper but the immediacy of receiving it digitally can’t be beat.
In fact, you're talking about cloud gaming...

Even when you buy physical it's digital these days since a lot of games don't even come with a disc. Devs are rooting for an all digital future.

I'm not surprised, games seem to go out of stock fast these days.
Add the people who buy digital anyway and you get
"Bro, how are you playing this game so early"
"Arrived in the post this morning"
"Oh, I gotta wait till midnight, I got off PSN for £79, digital is much better and convenient. "
"Right... got mine for £52, been playing for the last 4 hours, anyway speak to ya later"

Digital on console is no good.

I buy roughly 50% digital / 50% physical. Just whatever I feel like at the time. Not too autistic about fully sticking to one or the other.

Are you all living in a dungeon created in 1999 with a 56k modem?

I can download a game faster than what it takes to jump into my car and go down to the local store.

That conversation is literally one in your own head.

I've played games before my friends due to region unlock or simply because I have the game preloaded for release.

1GB actually

And no that's a conversation I continuely have with one of my friends on PSN 🙄
And you must be talking about stream because not even Pre-order DLC is available a day before release let alone days on PSN.
most people can get a physical release before it's released digitally in any region or even before you can preload
The bigger question is why...

At the end of it all, you can't take it with you. Enjoy what you can get with the time you have. The game is playable on my screen either way and when I'm gone it's really not gonna matter that much.

All this back and forth for the past 15+ years about this is really stupid.

This is a surprisingly philosophical reply not often seen on neogaf.

You can't blame digital because Sony sucks at it. Maybe there's a reason you have that talk with a psn buddy?

I havent pre ordered in several years, but I remember being able to play digitally bought games on xbox and pc before my regional midnight.

Either steam or Xbox seems to throttle your download speed, I don't know if psn does. From your experience it could sound like it.

Just don't state imaginary conversations as facts.

So the reason you can get a game sometimes a week or at the latest a day or two before it's up on the server is because Sony sucks at digital and download speeds?
😐
And your rebuttal is "imagination" on my part...

Thank god us Nintendo gamers lag behind on digital adoption. We still got some time before our all digital future

With Nintendo's mentality towards discounts, etc. I'm surprised they haven't removed the option first, tbh. Seems like eliminating sharing and used games would fit their MO perfectly. Likely would be a boon to their bottom line too, a lot of multi-switch households with a lot of "family sharing" going on.

There are a lot of games that are released digital only. I would like to see the split comparing only the games that came out both digitally and physical. I know big single player games, like Sony exclusives, are much more evenly split.

Yeah okay. There's no way that any store or store chain gets away with breaking street dates early on a consistent basis.

I'll only buy physical and always go for the cheapest option whether online or the high street. Also it's nice to receive a game a day or to earlier via the post before the official release date.😁

Yeah okay. There's no way that any store or store chain gets away with breaking street dates early on a consistent basis.

I have literally never been able to find or get any store to break street dates :(

Whenever I see people who post about getting a copy of a game 10~ days before release date, it always seems like either it's fake, or the poster is actually an employee at a store whose able to get their hands on a copy that quick.

Best luck that I've had was with Amazon. But that's only a day or two if I'm lucky.

I'm sure they don't do it on purpose
But to ensure all pre-orders get to the customer for launch many ship early, the postal service is the ones that don't wait and delivers the next day instead of in 3 days, hell I've had dispatched email after midnight and it's been delivered in the morning.

Amazon is usually day of release or later 🙄

I actually got games early from them. So a day or two before release at the earliest. I remember I got my GoW PS4 Pro several days before it came out.

What a shame.
People are fools for doing that. No control over your game, no ownership... you can't sell it, unpatch it, lend or anything.
Pay for everything - own nothing

PHYSICAL FTW
Don't want my home filled with game, dvd cases and discs

They tend to be the best for getting a game that's already out(I have Prime) but I've never had anything early from them.
but I'm always teasing my sister because she orders everything from them so I play her up and keep asking "has yours come yet?" 😏

Well maybe it's just where I live I guess. But it isn't normal to get a game early from them it's actually quite rare. Love their late delivery policy. I got quite a few free extras from them due to that.

Guess im and old fart. Only digital PS5 game I own is Kena,l. I have 6 games on disc. Most digital games ive bought were PS1 Classics on PS3.

While the convenience of not having to switch out games is nice, i generally prefer a disc and case. I also understand i am a dying breed, but man...all digital gaming is going to suck price wise in the future, particularly 3-6 months after a games launch.

But, the younger gen seems to not be bothered by paying more for games, GaaS or shitty DLC....but that's all they grew up on...not cheat codes, and not beating a game 2-3 times to unlock new costumes, colors or weapons. Now its just $5.99 x 100 items.

The good ole days was getting a brand new game and taking it to the bathroom to go through at least a 15+ pglage manual....

But i digress...we make the sacrifice for the environment...well thats what they tell us...though we know it just cuts down on cost.

Going digital is not surprising, it's the cost of games on PSN and how so many are willing to pay is.

Makes sense.

PC is 100%, Xbox is at 90%, Sony is at 80%. It will reach 100% just like with PC eventually, because digital is much more convenient. How many people borrow disks from their friends these days anyway?

yup, physical is almost a thing of the past, and for good reasons.

Watch physical games getting more expensive in a couple of years because of "costs" and "niche"... They never made digital games cheaper but they will surely take the opportunity.

Switched almost completely to digital in the past 2 years. I got no more room for game discs.
Hope physical goes away 100 % and with that shorter AAA games return because you cheap folks can‘t finish them fast and then resell anymore.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Well physical will never go away because vinyl record sales is increasing or something. Don’t worry

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
did no one reading this which I shared earlier?

ITS HAPPENING NOW, in 2022!

Anything including government regulations could affect your digital games or your account online.

Can you pro-digital owners GUARANTEE that our digital ownership could last for the next 10-20 years?

Yeah, if you don't care about preservation then sure.

Hows the wii, wii u, 3ds, psp, ps3, and vita e-shops doing?
Steam, u play, gog, and Xbox store is doing fine.

Nintendo and Sony sucks in that regard, and are thankfully not the industry standard.

There is no digital ownership when "buying" digital movies / games . You basically rent a license until the company decides to end the service. Could be in 100 years, could be next week.

Best example - Sony removing some purchased films movies from users accounts

Sonys ToS
8.4. No Resale or Commercial Use. You must be an end user to purchase from PlayStation Store. Resellers, as determined by us in our sole discretion, are prohibited. When you order Content from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that Content for private, non-commercial use. That license is not transferable unless your local applicable laws say it must be. This means you can use a Product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the Product.
10.1. All intellectual property rights subsisting in PSN Content, including all software, data, services, and other content subsisting in or used in connection with PSN, the Online ID and access to content and hardware used in connection with PSN belong to SIE, its affiliates, and its licensors. Use of the terms "own," "ownership", "purchase," "sale," "sold," "sell," "rent" or "buy" in this Agreement or in connection with PSN Content does not mean or imply any transfer of ownership of any content, data or software or any intellectual property rights from SIE, its affiliates or its licensors to any user or third party.
