A few things became clear from that State of Play

Sony has not forgotten about Japanese games.

Japanese developers have not forgotten about PlayStation.

As someone who believes the best games still come out of Japan, today was a great day. Both Nintendo and Sony fully embraced their Japanese heritage.

Still, that was a lot of reading subtext for Japanese dialog in one day from those two shows.

Top down: Like a Dragon: Ishin, Synduality, Stellar Blade (Project Eve), Rise of the Ronin, Tekken 8

Wholeheartedly agree. Japan and Asia are still knocking out bangers left and right. That is where most of the creativity and love for the medium still exist. And PS and Switch is the place to be if you love those games.

Wasn't it like a shitty VR Star Wars game, a trailer for God of War, and a Korean character action game?

Does Japan mean something different now?

Is it slang for "The fuck was this?"

If so, Japan indeed has not forgotten about Playstation. So much Japan.

*literally watches entire presentation and then just ignores the Japanese games*

“Uh where were all the Japanese games!?!”

Yeah, I was being a bit facetious, The Ronin game looks pretty good, if a bit derivative, and I mean...Tekken is OG, but I'm more in love with the batshit lore and watching other people play, so...

Glad there's some good shit on the horizon for everyone, though.

Somebody didn't watch the whole show 😄

More importantly...

The death of the upcoming PlayStation Showcase was called prematurely.

PlayStations 1st party and 2nd party games were nowhere to be found here (save GoW). That means they still got their heavy hitters gearing up for a big show.

Jim Ryan wins again.

Sega was there with Yakuza, Tekken's next main entry was revealed there, Team Ninja is releasing a PlayStation console exclusive game and yes...a Korean game in the middle of it all as a PlayStation console exclusive.

All this in 20 minutes sounds more than okay for asian games?

Yeah, it had stuff in it. Just stuff that doesn't make me, as an individual responsible only for my own opinions, super hype. That's not the SoP's fault.

That was pretty disappointing. Still feels like gaming is recovering from the pandemic. They really didn't show much of anything to get excited about, anything other than God of War. Was anything even close to release?

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
Astro's Playroom is the best game they've made imo, from the rebuilt Sony Japan team Asobi

They're currently hiring too so they might become a decent sized studio again
Japan studio was a number of studios, increasing asobi to 100 is not a substitute for what the Japan studio was
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/team-asobi-we-want-our-games-to-feel-like-theyre-made-in-japan
Back then, Team Asobi was around 35 employees, and has since grown to more than 60, and Doucet expects that number to reach around 100 people.

Raganarok is a given but Tekken 8 fuck yeah, that looked soo good!

Also really hyped for Project Eve, Like A Dragon: Ishin and Rise of the Ronin.

I was hoping for PSVR2 announcement with pre order and release date. :messenger_frowning_

Stellar Blade is 2023 so is Synduality which is a multiplatform game

Do Japanese gamers care though?, i mean i swear Japanese game loving westerners seem to care more than Japanese gamers.
We have had a few industry people in recent years say how Japanes studios basically make games for the West now, as consoles are just old news in Japan these days, and their game sell way more in the west.

It was alright besides yakuza, rise of ronin and god of war. Everything else looked pretty mediocre and potential financial bombs

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance. What this means is that Japanese games will keep on coming to Playstation despite all the doom and gloom around here.

all the games in your post look pretty good, and i agree that a lot of the best stuff tends to come from japan these days. then again you should expect no more from the country which saved gaming and catapulted it to lengths beyond what Atari could ever hope to achieve

The question was moreso would they be altered to “fit american sensibilities” or whatever the heck

Unfortunatelly the only good impression I ever got from State of Play was today(felt like it was a response to something, I dunno). Seriously, State of Play is very mediocre and this one would be terrible if it wasn't for the presence of those titles.

On the other side, these games deserve all the praise and love they can get. I'm all for more Japanese/Korean/Chinese games.

Also whats up with all the bubble gum pop anime style that all games seem to use nowadays. Wheres all the dark, gritty, violent, fantasy/cyberpunk stuff that drew me into anime when i was a kid. Like that stellar blade game, slap like a beserk skin onto it and people would be much more hyped up for it, prob would sell better too.

we get a lot of that these days with titles like nier automata but honestly the character design a lot of the time lacks the grit, rustic realistic design of older anime
not to mention older anime had far better looking backgrounds. like... look at Stellar Blade and compare it to Akira, cowboy bebop or Neon Genesis Evangelion. one looks far darker and more artistic than the other.
