Rumor: Mid-Gen Upgrades for PS5 and Xbox Series X devkits have been received by most AAA studios, according to GTA Forum insider

I bloody hope so im a console guy but Plague Tale R and Gotham Knights both being locked into 30fps modes doesn’t look good and I’d happily pay up to 1k for a 4k60 machine.

Don’t make me get a gaming PC please!

This is the crux of the issue. These walled gardens are super profitable and something that all these console makers obviously care deeply about. If PC starts to consistently out perform the base consoles (which of course it should), even a modest number of users moving in that direction (15-20%) stings. If the mid-gen systems aren't very popular overall, they fulfill the purpose of trying to keep users within the walled garden.

Once again calling bullshit until this is corroborated or confirmed by more reputable sources, preferably actual developers working at actual game studios.

If new console comes out every 3 years, this will really turn people away from consoles into the pc and then AAA games, exclusives and good stuff is over.
besides - it's a slap in the face. Barely any games released this gen so far... let alone optimized games for the hardware

There are many more examples and on other platforms aswell.
Yes please give me these games in higher settings and higher locked frames and just take my money on a mid gen refresh

Wont happen, NDA

Phil confirmed like a year ago that they have 'more consoles in development'.
Mid gen machines will happen.

That is such a vague statement, he could've been alluding to a slim version for all we know.
So I will wait for this rumor to be corroborated or confirmed.

Of course no one would actually openly confirm this due to NDA. Nothing has stopped game developers leaking things before.

You’re still playing cross Gen games after two years. No way are “Pro” systems being given to developers already.

I'll believe it when I see it.
Don't really see the point right now to be honest when most stuff is still cross gen, the current consoles are still hard to get in many places and the world is going through an economic crisis where a lot of people will have to deal with tighter budgets. Working on some sort of slim console that's easier to make and maybe a bit cheaper makes more sense to me than some $800 pro model. But who knows.

Either way, after like 20 "we are totally getting the Switch pro" rumors which ended up being nothing (or just a minor upgrade) I find it hard to trust this sort of report.

Who knows how it goes or if this is legit about the dev kits being out already. But, I still think we get updated hardware by 2024 at the latest, either that or the generation is just cut much shorter and we start over again.

Aww wads up? Still salty that I wasn't hacked for refusing 2fa but OW2 servers were?

if youre so sure ill be gone, match my bet.

good man
why would Microsoft need a mid gen refresh for VR? makes absolutely no sense
Because the series S is a wank console for VR and the series X, while powerful and capable of VR, doesn't have the brute force to match High end PC offerings.

Trust me ;)

This is just absurd though. Gen just started, games are not pushing the hardware, we still have cross gen.........ah hell, who am I kidding?

Same here

People saying we don't need one must have missed Gothem Knights being locked at 30fps which I am afraid will be the norm when devs start trying to push these consoles for next gen games only

Before I joined gaf I posted on other gaming websites. I was 1 year ahead of the news of an amazon like firestick (still coming, it isn't cancelled) and 6 months ahead of the purchase of Acti.

If you want the far out scoop, Disney are going to enter the gaming industry with a digital storefront like steam. They will offer games through Disney+, in the same way Netflix are exploring offering games (potentially partnering with Sony). Potentially, Disney+ is a trojan horse to get Sony exclusive games on Xbox, but that's a wildly unverified rumour and possible fanfic

So I brought a series x on release day, have not seen a game I could not play on my one x yet, I mean, the load times is nice and all but the games, though good is underwhelming.

They really should just make the APU upgradable so we can avoid buying a whole new console. Make the APU user friendly to change out like the old Pentium II processors where it was like a cartridge.

they could just, like... not support the Series S if it was really too weak (which it most likely absolutely isn't btw.)
It is too weak. Ps4 wasn't powerful enough for vr, even with the breakout box and the pro version. While the series S is more powerful than a ps4pro, obviously, it doesn't have the grunt to match high end PC headsets.

Xbox series VR or whatever it will be called, will be the best place to play VR games. And I for one would love to see Halo VR.

1. CG gif and it is literally running ps3 code under the hood
2. Literally running on steam deck
3. Only true next Gen game out there
4. PS4 game

So 1 game. You got him!!!

Seems like the XSS should be able to support VR, at least to the level of the self-contained headsets. If MS goes into VR, you'd think they would support all of the consoles and maybe just allow games to be added to the "VR" store that don't support the S. A decent little library of titles could probably be released on XSS for VR, especially if it can still hold up against the Quest 3 gpu wise.

Of course it is too weak. They can support the PS4 too. You just get middling results, as we've seen all fucking gen.

Series S is going to hold Xbox games back. All gen long.

Excellent, can't wait. By 2024 I think a lot of console games will start having frame rates tumble back down to 30fps so we'll need these. I don't understand why people would be against this (unless it has a negative effect on the availability of stock of the standard consoles). If you don't want one don't buy one. But for those of us who want better performance then we get the option.

They'd have to make different versions of headsets to match the S. The S is going to be a hybrid streaming console. the Xbox One will eventually be a streaming only (current gen) console, once the kinks are figured out.

Microsoft can make their own hardware or partner with someone else. I know people will dismiss this next comment as fanboyism or wrong but the series x is not set up to be optimal for VR, unlike the PS5 which had VR in mind. If Microsoft partner with a 3rd party (meta for example) they'll need to rejigger the internals so it can better compete with PSVR2 and PC headsets. Remember, Microsoft have gamepass on PC and are trying to attract both crowds.

If we consider the difference between the xbox one and the xbox one x, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Microsoft will redesign their console internals to better compete (for those unaware, the x1x is a 'next gen' console under the hood and completely different from the og x1 architecture.)

These were always going to happen and if memory serves me correct it very soft target (for Xbox at least) was holiday this year but then COVID hit and shortages went crazy and possibly time it with Starfield
Ps5 next year. Ms the year after. Just like with pro and x1x.

It will let these greedy execs finally make profit on hardware. I expect $599 minimum. As well as improving the stock shortage. Even if they only produce 20% of these pro consoles on the new smaller nodes, that’s 20% extra on the shelves. They used market will also be flooded by people trading in their original ps5s.
