Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
You gotta think Nintendo is laughing their asses off too. There has to be some level of spite here by them.

Market seems happy with it too.

Market is happy, clearly Nintendo are happy that they've signed onto the agreement.

Based on what we know from Cade and other recent comments, big publishers like Ubisoft, EA, Rockstar have all said they are not concerned about the acquisition.

There is only one major holdout, 2 if you count Google. But Google telling anyone off with respect to competitive or anti-competitiveness is a pretty good joke.

I think Nintendo is happy to be considered a competitor in the video game market again. Many here tried to write them off as no longer competing in the gaming industry. Sony should be happy too because they have argued CoD is a vital input to gaming and without competition isn't possible. MS is saving Nintendo here and we are all better for it. 😁

they have mentioned bringing this to Nintendo before, so no reprise there, only thing interesting is that now steam and Nintendo probably signed same deal that was offered to Sony. This now put Sony in interesting position not accepting this deal will show their hypocrisy.
There’s no mention of a time limit regarding Steam, or it being the same offer.

I don’t really understand why it’s hypocrisy? Say CoD right now makes Sony £800m per year (pulled from my ass). Sony don’t really need to do shit to get that money. For all Sony know, this income could continue as is (if left untouched) for the next 30 years. No one know when CoD will die in terms of popularity. For all Sony know, in 10 years time it could be generating £2b a year for them if either CoD or PS reaches new players. So yeah, why would they sign a 10 year contract when their preference is for things to be left as is, where they’ll have access indefinitely?

As for Nintendo signing the deal, no shit, they’ve not had a CoD game for how long? It’s literally a win for them with no negatives.

Wow, I’m interested in how they will fit CoD on Switch if it’s still +150 GB on consoles with dedicated HW decompression

They are making grandiose proclamations about an intellectual property that they don't own. The theatrical motives become even more apparent when considering the increased vitriol playing out in public arena over the past week. These announcements are just a continuation of that. There is zero substance behind it. Unfortunately, select few here (they know who they are) won't put aside their platform affiliation to submit towards logical reasoning.

They're making grandiose proclamations solidifying things things they've been talking about all year ?

ok chief :messenger_ok:

you still haven't told us how this is "embarrassing" for Microsoft, or anyone for that matter 🤔

It's not that grandiose, they were making CoD on Wii and Wii U after all but I have very little doubt this is more an 'Activison benefits' move to port to switch being used for theatrics to get the deal done. MS don't really release their first party games on switch.

Yes I did, you even quoted it.

They are making grandiose proclamations about an intellectual property that they don't own.

If you don't understand how these comments should be interpreted as petty theater, it's likely because you don't have an adequate grasp of buyer's authoritative limitations pre-merger; which is ok too, but ultimately means conversing with you is a dead-end.

Ah the old "I'm not gonna reply to you anymore" defense.

To your very misguided point, they are not making proclamations about IP they own, only commitments about support if/when the deal closes, hence the "following the merger" in Phil's tweets. Obviously they can't sign any legal paperwork on Activision's behalf right now. We all know that, you're not bringing up the gotcha you think you might be.

As for your other points, there's no "zero substance" behind it. Brad Sams was talking about bringing CoD to Nintendo platforms as early as the first week of Feb, just days after the initial acquisition announcement was made. All the substance is there, you're choosing not to see it, for obvious reasons.

Who is "they"? If we can agree that "they" is Activision, then it is appropriate to categorize these announcements as grandiose because they are coming from Microsoft; a company that hopes to, but currently does not control the CoD IP in any way shape or form. This is akin to me announcing a trade agreement with XYZ country while running for US president.

If cloud gaming is the MS solution to this commitment there will 100% be backlash once it’s released. At least when it comes to multiplayer.

Sounds like they want native, but it's way too early:

When asked if the Switch had enough technical specifications to run Call of Duty smoothly, Spencer said, "Minecraft and Call of Duty are different games. But from how you get games onto Nintendo, how you run a development team that is targeting multiple platforms, that’s experience we have.”

...errr... that's called an election platform/promise.

What gotcha would there be for me to bring? I think you're a mostly level headed guy throughout this forum, but when it comes to this particular topic, it's full warrior mode activated. Be well.

I’d be impressed if they manage to reduce the size of the game in some way to run smoothly on Switch. Could actually benefit all consoles and PC if they can reduce the overall file size.
I’m skeptical it’s possible but

The reason for the snark is that you are literally the only person who is saying that this is somehow embarrassing for MS, it's great news for everyone especially Nintendo fans, and yes it does make for a very good bargaining chip against the regulators no doubt about that.

But, again, they are not signing any contracts, they only making commitments and the comments of carefully say that this will happen after the merger completion. So there is that one qualifier.

These gifs are killing me.

Well we're in the endgame for this chapter it feels like. Hopefully we find out this week where it all is going. I still feel like the deal is dead without further concessions. My only concrete reasoning on this is just how much the volume has increased in the past week. They have to know the votes are not in their favor and are trying to avoid what is probably at least a year long messy legal battle with the FTC.

Well between the unions fully behind the deal and Nintendo officially being pledged support it is certainly a take to believe the walls are closing in and the deal is dead. I suppose we'll see how close to reality your predictions are. I saw you also talking about divestments too so well see how they can divest and make Nintendo versions of CoD.

Microsoft exces can pat themselves on the back after this week. Brilliant effort to get this deal through.
First whole CWA thing where CWA opted to recommend the deal which is huge, since FTC wanted to look to this deal through workers lens. Then ZeniMax QA testers proceeded to create a union and Microsoft honoured the commitment to CWA.
Then there was confirmation that they offered Sony a 10-year deal. And to make them look bad they made same deal with Valve and Nintendo, and while Nintendo and Valve accepted, Sony refused to accept it. Microsoft can now use it to point to the fact that Sony was building their entire case against this deal on the back of COD series, but they now refusing pretty generous deal.

Just masterclass of PR and influencing public opinion.

You know what would be funny? The deal gets into a messy legal battle or falls through and next year a Nintendo version of CoD begins development in June anyway. Wonder what the confused fans would think of that one.

It's hilarious how anything good coming out of this deal with the union and the ten year commitment is seen as posturing. Yeah no fucking shit mate, at least it ends up in real results too instead of just crying to GamesIndustry.biz.

Doing something I don't like = this is just posturing meant to influence people mooooooom

Is MS trying to show that this deal is only bad for Playstation and good for everyone else?

I've been saying its good for me a PC gamers and a gp subscriber, but they are adding more platforms to the mix.

Was this posted?

I really like the quote "From where we sit, it's clear they're spending more time with the regulators than they are with us to try and get this deal done."

CoD is super important to PlayStation they should protect their input.

We’re happy that Microsoft wants to continue using Steam to reach customers with Call of Duty when their Activision acquisition closes. Microsoft has been on Steam for a long time and we take it as a signal that they are happy with gamers reception to that and the work we are doing. Our job is to keep building valuable features for not only Microsoft but all Steam customers and partners.

Microsoft offered and even sent us a draft agreement for a long-term Call of Duty commitment but it wasn’t necessary for us because a) we’re not believers in requiring any partner to have an agreement that locks them to shipping games on Steam into the distant future b) Phil and the games team at Microsoft have always followed through on what they told us they would do so we trust their intentions and c) we think Microsoft has all the motivation they need to be on the platforms and devices where Call of Duty customers want to be.

Phil straight up calling out Sony. This keeps getting spicier.....2022 wasn't a year of incredible games bar a couple....its the year of execs fighting!

I think they need to get in a ring.

There is literally no substance to the tweet about these "commitments". Christ, you posted it! Are you now saying you're seeing things that aren't there? No formal link attached to the tweets that redirects to supplementary details, nothing of the sort. Announcing on twitter at the 11th hour. The wording for the Steam tweet didn't even make sense that's how half-assed this stunt was. And this of course is all by design. Nintendo and Steam haven't even responded it's so ridiculous. That is why this is pathetic and embarrassing for Microsoft.

I said it from beginning. 1v1 in FPS game between Ryan and Spencer. If Spencer wins they will get ABK, if Ryan wins, deal will fall through

You really think that Microsoft/Nintendo or Valve would publish a detail of their agreements? Are you dumb or you don't know how these things works?
Public companies don't have obligation to publish that kind of stuff.

Wonder what Sony has planned now if the deal goes through.

I very much doubt SONY ain't gonna go in a massive spree of acquisitions after this and takes the games out of Xbox altogether.

I'm pretty sure Sony has been preparing for that option.

Consolidation is such shit lol

Nailed it. Phil will wipe the floor with Jim though so maybe it should be something else, like a shirt off. Who has the best shirt and shit eating grin while laughing. That would be fairer.

Or one of those slap offs, I'd love to see that. Just them slapping the shit out of each other. Jim would win that, isn't he from Liverpool? Will be hard as nails and probably pull a knife.

Unless I have his home town wrong.

This might help with the FTC but i dont see why this deal with Nintendo and Valve would change the CMAs stance. The CMA noted that MS doesnt see Nintendo as a competition and CoD is already on Steam.

Would probably help if they made a deal with Amazon or Apple, but i guess we will never see that happen.

Yesterday I saw prominent PS fanboy dreaming about Sony acquiring EA "out of spite"

Because that's how things works...I guess :messenger_grinning:
