Bloodborne is my favorite video game. Ever

I hear so many amazing things about this game I really should play it. Max dood always raves about it who I watch alot.

I bought it a couple years ago because it was on sale for $5 and only played like 10 minutes for some reason. The problem with me is Im an old fart that just keeps replaying my old favorites ( ocarina of time, uncharted 2, metal gear solid etc ) so I have this huge backlog of new (or used to be new) games I never get to but just keep buying because of gaming sales like an animal!!

I havn’t really played any souls game’s honestly either (i still need to try elden ring from all the hype)

Whats the real hook to this game? How long should one push through to play until they know its for them or not?

I can appreciate amazing games even if they are not for me, so if they are beloved, Ill even push through to the end to give it a fair shot and see what people see in a highly acclaimed game.

Did you finish it? I dropped it twice over the years because it didn't click, when it finally did, it became my GOAT game.
Yup, and the dlc. I was waiting for the epiphany that everyone says is there, never came. My overall feeling "that's it?". I expected more I supposes

Ludwig holy blade and Moonlight greatsword are hands down the best greatsword gameplay feeling in any games.
Honestly my favourite weapon in Bloodborne is Beasthunter Saif, when its folded it has nice dash towards enemy and fast strikes.

Yeah this weapon feels really good. I think I finished one playthrough with it.

It's just in comparison greatswords in other souls games are much clunky and slower while greatswords in Bloodborne feels so satisfying.

mh, not sure.
I think Eternal Darkness does the concept of
"you are nothing compared to the old cosmic beings"
better than BB (for gameplay reasons maybe, but still)
Dont agree at all, Eternal Darkness just doesn’t do anything original with the Lovecraftian themes. It is good dont get me wrong, but Bloodborne is extremely unique to the point where its main theme is still to this day theorised heavily. Beyond that even the revelation that the whole game is the cursed dream of a vengeful Old One is pure Lovecraft.

Ok? I agree.
I don't think what you said really contradicts what I said.
i was focusing on that specific "feeling" that i put in the spoiler tag.

If you've only completed your favorite game 4 times I highly doubt it's your favorite game. I make a run of FF7 at least every 2 years, and it's nowhere near my favorite game.

So, the consensus on gaf is Bloodborne is still better than Sekiro or Elden Ring? Interesting.. Now may be the time for me to give into the hype.

I like Demon's Souls the best but I really love the lore and atmosphere of Bloodborne.

I kind of wish Bloodborne took place in the same world as Demon's Souls, only in the future.

Yeah. It's pretty good. I cannot dodge worth crap in this game. Nor could I parry well in Sekiro. Both are very good in every way. I just WISH they had less emphasis on one mechanic. ex Bloodbornes dodging and Sekiros parrying. They are mandatory mechanics almost. Dark/Demons Souls gave you a good balance of dodging, parrying, blocking and tanking. Bloodborne and Sekiro seemed to have the "Best of" Dark Souls mechanics in each iteration. Elden Ring has the mechanics of every game they have made.

Its a masterpiece for sure, but i have some gripes with it.
For example i think the bosses are mediocre, most of the main game bosses are just meh.
I also think the build variety in the game is not interesting, you can do the usual Dex/STR but the Arcane and Bloodtinge builds are significantly inferior and less fun thats mainly due to the lackluster arsenal of Arcane hunter tools and the lame Quicksilver bullet system which conflicts itself with parry mechanics (which is far superior and more reliable) making both systems the Arcane hunter tools and the bullets to be essentially near worthless, unless you want to force yourself to use it which is a shame because if they invested better in them it would have been much more enjoyable to use them.
I also think the side content gets repetitive around the 4th Chalice run, same bosses, same layout, same rewards, it gets tiresome and boring and makes Elden Ring caves look great.
And ofcourse we all know the framepacing issue and how the game sometimes goes sub-30fps which makes it stutter for an action game it takes away from the fluidity of the gameplay.

The other issues i have are simply nitpicking if i want, but i'll keep them turned off now because i love the game, i just use them to demolish annoying fanboys when the need arise :messenger_sunglasses:

Yeah the game is a masterpiece and easy 5/5 for me despite its shortcomings, its not my favorite Fromsoft game though, that is between ER and DS1. But it sits at 3rd place comfortably.
I wish for a remaster, i'd like to play it with better upgrades like what Metroid Prime got.
No remake hopefully because i dont trust Bluepoint to give it justice.

Fair enough. It is a fantastic game. Can't argue with that.
Looks amazing too but its 1080p is very jaggy nowadays. The 30fps is surprisingly snappy and responsive compared to other 30fps games this gen though
Has nothing to do with 1080p. The game has always looked rough, like a PS3 game.

Bloodborne was cool, but would need more
For it to be my favorite game of all time.

Favorite game of all time to me should have an amazing story, be groundbreaking technologically and ambition in some sense. Have characters I adore. Unique.

Bloodborne, doesnt really have characters you adore in the same sense as say...a metal gear or final fantasy, ocarina, witcher 3. It doesnt have groundbreaking tech/visuals/ambition like a half life 2 or shenmue, witcher 3, Ocarina. Its unique in artstyle, but not in design. And its not all that ambitious.

To me if its your favorite game of all time, then you dont care about...alot lol you care about that fight fight fight and nothing else really. Kind if an insult to all those other games listed, but that just my opinion. I just feel like gaming can be and is so much more than...a souls game.

Llike if you wanted to show an alien the pinnacle of everything gaming could be...would you show it a souls game? No.

I love Bloodborne and how it makes you play aggressively to get your health back.

Martyrs Logarius was an arse of a boss. Pushed me off the damn ledge too many times

The DLC is well worth playing as well ❤️

I mean, I definitely adore Lady Maria but probably not in the way you‘re meaning.

Having said that, I think you’re not giving credit to Souls’ great world building and ambience. These definitely matter.

And come on, when we’re talking characters, I’ll give you some FFs and MGSs, but Ocarina was your go to for Zelda? Nah, I remember quite a few Soulsborne characters over any of the characters in OoT.

And graphical innovation and gameplay innovation is nice and all, but irrelevant unless your “greatest of all time” list relies heavily on how a game impacted the industry as opposed to how good you actually think it is. Which I just do not fuck with, anyone who makes a list based on that makes it seem like they felt pressured to include games regardless if they’re actually the games they enjoyed the most or not.

At the end of the day, coming up with an idea first is nice and all, but it’s foolish to believe that idea will be its strongest upon first attempt always. Execution > originality.

And regardless, how a game grips people will always be subjective. Final Fantasy IX is my favorite game of all time because it immersed me in an adventure I absolutely loved the most. It was not innovative or groundbreaking in any way, and it did not matter to me in the slightest.

Bloodborne was for me another, albeit different, adventure that immersed me completely. The world was engaging and creepy. The combat was pure perfection in my book. The music and atmosphere, just god, holy shit. Like those moments that will stay with me forever, like when you’re at the university, you go outside, and the man is sitting in the chair, and he simply points to the lake without saying a word, and what follows, just goddamn. The NPCs, while admittedly smaller in number compared to other Souls titles, were all memorable and crazy and badass.

And really, yes gaming can be a lot of things, but it feels like you’re pigeonholing the medium by saying the best games HAVE to do all of those things. No, they do not necessarily, like there are people out there who have a Mario Kart or a fighting game or two in their top 10s, and their opinions aren’t less valid just because those games didn’t have certain aspects. Not all games need to cover every single base there is.

Well were talking favorite game of all time here, so yes something of that prestige to me, has to have a bit of everything. Otherwise if my favorite game of all time is lacking in story immensely like souls game do (Miss me with the lore, thats a cop out), then that would mean I probably dont value story that much, which is my point. Because for me it rules it out of contention completely. I wouldnt even consider it to be ABOVE all other games. Its missing something I adore.

And by the way the games I mentioned were certainly good games, not just ground breaking tech demos. In fact I feel people do what you are implying with FROM games; FROM has a weird air of gamer credibility associated with it, so it gets praise regardless if people really like it.

The games I listed are all superior to any FROM effort in my opinion, as an overal gaming experience.

Like I said, if you wanted an alien to PLAY what emcompassed what gaming can be. It wouldnt be a souls game.

Also one if my favorite games of all time is kingdom hearts and shenmue. Shenmue was groundbreaking, kingdom hearts not as much. But they both have a bit of everything.

Completed the game about 12 times.Have about 400 hours in it.It's My favourite game of all time followed by Witcher 3 and Resident Evil 4.

IT îs such a perfect game and its a fucking crime we don't have a remaster for it...they don't need to remake it but jeez just give us a 4k 60 fps version. At this point I feel like Sony just hates the Bloodborne fans. Its been so long that i feel like it won't happen anymore and I feel like thats because Shu isnt there as head of PS studios to push this on Jim Ryan.

bloodborne is the only game which kept me up until late night. Im getting older, with kids and work time to spend in games is minimum. but bloodborne made me use even the time in the toilette to grind using remote play on a vita.
as a gamer started on pong and space invaders, it's on my top 3 of all time

I feel ya. TimeSplitters 2 is my favorite ever, but Bloodborne is certainly one of the better games of all time. It's much better than Elden Ring imo (though ER is still also good).

It's my favorite game too. That's why I'm so upset with Sony not giving a shit about it. Not even a remaster for PS5. And since they're got the hots for GaaS why not evolve the Chalice Dungeons into a live service game, solo, co-op and PvP? You could add new dungeons, bosses, levels, weapons, items etc, in randomly generated dungeons. Always thought the Chalice Dungeons had such potential to be something great. Something that could potentially last for years, with new fresh updates constantly keeping the community engaged. But no, we get focus tested crap like Fairgames instead.

I'd love that, as it's basically what Let It die is (sans co-op and real-time PVP), which is another favorite PS4 game of mine.

Yeah Bloodborne is the only Fromsoftware game that clicked with me....Bloodborne and 3D Dot Game Heroes.
I don't know if it is the more agressive playstyle and the risk/reward system being different but I loved Bloodborne.

Pretty much the same for me. Dark Souls 3 didn't click with me the same way, largely due to the limited amount of healing items, the lack of health regain via countering, a different kind of parry mechanic, and countless weapons that felt the same, but Demon's Souls remake was much more to my taste. Partly because it also had some horror elements.

I couldn't get into demon Souls either there's really only 2 fromsoft games that I really like Bloodborne and 3d dot game heroes (I'll keep talking about 3d dot games because it is a real gem).I got either bored or frustrated that the main thing you need to do in most fromsoft games is wait until the ennemis attack then parry, the rest is pretty useless or mùaybe I didn't have the patience to get more useful weapons or shit like that but why would I have patience to games I am not enjoying.

I didn't realize 3D Dot Game Heroes was made by From until now. o_O I didn't really follow the studio before Bloodborne, so that's never registered for me before. The visual style is very charming.

Yep that game is criminally underrated, it's absence of digital edition and limited physical release didn't help though.

I'll never forget the feeling of utter dread when I emerged from some church-like building after killing Rom, the Vacuous Spider and seeing these big bois just casually hanging around on the side of every building:

Lesser%20Amygdala%20Eyes.png

It also blew my mind to realize what the fuck were those invisible murder portals that kept grabbing me out of nowhere at the beginning of the game, and I also pissed myself when I realized that this meant these giant monstrosities were always there and I just couldn't see them early on in the game.

What a fucking masterpiece, lol.

I read this and then i played it again and finished it. Amazing game and amazing story/lore.

I can second that. This summary basically made Bloodborne go from amazing game to one of the best games ever made for me.

Some of the most memorable dialogue ever in this game.

Heard this one only once myself. Beautiful.

I just bought a used PS4 yesterday just for Bloodborne lol

Congrats friend, you're in for an amazing ride !
Hope you're not playing on an OLED though 'cause 30fps, the game's inherent stutters coupled with the instant response time of an OLED is...no bueno.
Tried it a couple.of weeks back and I almost got dizzy dammit...

Have fun !

I played it first in 2017 and loved it, I haven’t went back to a singleplayer game in the last 10 years and stuck with it but a couple of years ago this was the exception, I started over and got the platinum along with all the DLC trophies.

After reading this I started it up again this morning and instantly felt like doing it all again. The atmosphere, OST and combat is so perfect.
