Idk really, I don't feel super duper hyped on any of the two tbh. Elden Ring was probably the most hyped I've felt for a long time and everything else just pales a bit in comparison.

They are also offer incredibly different experiences both in terms of gameplay and time invested. Spider-Man 2 is more like a big block buster movie whereas Starfield looks to be more like well crafted TV-series. Hard to say which one brings more hype since my preference varies depending on my daily mood.

Hyped for both, but I know Spider-Man 2 will be a banger right out the gate, and the reality of Starfield remains to be seen. Definitely getting both.

Also in Spidey’s favor is the fact that my 4 YO is crazy for anything Spider-Man so he’ll be glued to my side through the whole game.

Here's one thing to consider for hype.
This is the Starfield Trailer. This is the official gameplay trailer from Bethesda. This trailer has reached 2.1 million views in one month.

This is the Spiderman 2 Trailer. This is the official story trailer from Sony. This trailer has reached 12 million views in TWO WEEKS.

The hype for Starfield feels overblown. Nobody is really talking about it in the way Microsoft wants it to. View numbers speak heavily. I question the true amount of hype that Starfield actually has.

What time is it?
I'm pretty apathetic towards both. Bethesda hasn't made a great game since 2002 and I really don't enjoy most Sci-Fi settings. I liked Spider-Man and Miles Morales was fine, but I'm a little burnt out on the formula as it wasn't all that deep to begin with. It also comes with a major hurdle for me which obviously can't be remedied in that we will be revisiting the same open world, albeit with additions. In a vacuum, I'd probably vote for Spider-Man but I'll not be buying either and will have access to Starfield via Game Pass so I guess it wins by default.

Well you're talking one of the most well character's in the world vs A new IP with a nameless hero from a popular developer/publisher.

All the views say is who is more recognizable. The question is which one are YOU more hyped for?

Spiderman 2 is a known entity, we pretty much know what we are going to get. Personally I'm much more excited to explore a new space.

Spiderman 2 may come to PC in a year or 2 and I still wouldn't get it on release. Starfield I've already purchased on Steam, even though I have gamepass. Should tell you something.

Starfield and Armored Core. Couldn’t care less about SP2.
I must finish FFXVI before!
And I’d like to play BG3 but I feel like I might not have the time until AC6. Better wait for all the patches to improve PC performance.

The poll is asking for hype. If we go clearly by youtube views on their trailers it's obvious what people are more hyped for.

And Starfield being an unknown property? Weren't they working on this for the span of Duke Nukem Forever? It's been what, ten years since they started working on Starfield?

Sure Spiderman is a known entity. But at this point, shouldn't Starfield be a known entity with how much Xbox fans have been blabbing it out?

If I'm going to go by the metrics of what a Bethesda game is, I'm not hyped for it because I know how glitchy and buggy it is going to be. This goes back all the way to Arena.

Here's a question. How far would Starfield go if they locked up all mods to the game? Everyone talks about Mods being the reason why Bethesda games are so loved, but what happens if under Microsoft Mods are no longer allowed to make way for DLC, Micro Transactions and any number of Expansions? Mods would be a problem for this so the easiest way to "fix" this would be to stop mods all together.

Another question I would add is how complete is a Bethesda game without mods? Does anyone actually like their games in their base form? I always hear about mods for Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 4. How are these games without their mods? I always found Bethesda games to be underwhelming without community input. But what do I know? I'm probably just getting jaded as I get older and have less tolerance for someone else fixing someone elses shit or having to wait for someone else to make another work playable.

If I had an Xbox or decent PC I'd definitely pick up Stsrfield. I'm not that much into Bethesda games but their not-E3 presentation sold me on the game and I love the setting and aesthetic.

Spiderman 2 I'll probably buy when it's 50% off. I already felt tired of the same old formula with Miles Morales and this just looks like more of the same with nicer graphics. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it's also not something I'm hyped for.

It's two console exclusives going up against each other whats there to see, the biased voting is going to be evident. Realistically Spider Man 2 is going to be a good game just like the first one, but its not going to have the game industry impact like Starfield, which has the potential to not only be the best game this generation, but among the best games ever created, which isn't even in the scope of Spider Man 2.

To be honest this isn't even fair to Spider Man 2 and seems to be a forced comparison by a certain group.

What about Spiderman 2 did impress you? I think the times where games really could impress are over. At least for me.
Haven’t seen much of it but I played the last 3 Insomniac games and I’m satisfied that I can go in somewhat blind and enjoy it. The last few Bethesda games I played did nothing for me. People seem to be impressed by Starfield which is great, I’ll play it out of curiosity because it’s on Gamepass but my expectations are at the ground floor

Starfield by a longshot.
Spiderman was such a bore. Only got through a couple hours and stopped playing...

Justin Bieber is popular too.
Big deal if you’re into metal.
🤷‍♂️

Starfield is a AAA RPG and it’s a new IP and it’s quite possibly the biggest sci-fi RPG ever and the biggest RPG the main Bethesda studio in Maryland has ever made.

Maybe it’s not mainstream popular but for fans of the genre and especially Bethesda’s style of immersive RPGs it’ll be a big deal.

And Youtube trailer views aside, it’s currently the #1 most wishlisted upcoming game on Steam and high up on the global top seller list even before the release. So I think it’ll do alright.

Neither.
Spider-Boring is boring, and getting a Bethesda game at launch will give you more bugs than having unsafe sex with a toothless meth addict 60yo whore.

The last game i felt hyped for was Bloodborne, now i'm only hyped for The Haunted Chocolatier (whenever it releases).

I expect Spider-Man 2 to be more of the same so it’s hard to get hyped about. Starfield on the other hand looks far more ambitious, I don’t know if Bethesda will pull off a great game but it has more potential.

Obviously Starfield which will be a huge game, with support for many years both from Xbox and modders, probably decades like Elder Scrolls titles. Probably thousands of hours play to be discovered.

These are very different types of RPGs. I'm deep into BG3 and loving it, but I'm dropping it the very second Starfield releases.

No shit. They're still RPGs first and foremost and I have a feeling BG3 is going to outclass Starfield in that manner pretty easily. Still looking forward to it but I'll have BG3 done and dusted by then.

This has to be bait. Starfield will destroy BG3, including the concurrent player number on steam.

Who cares how many people are playing it? Does that make the game better? I'm sure Starfield will be some level of fun, but I'll be very surprised if it's a better RPG than BG3. Larian have made a once-in-a-generation game here and I'm only like 20 hours in.

Yeah I don't expect Starfield to start popping up WISDOM Save Rolls during my gun combat with Space Vampires and I doubt many others do as well, or even want it to. Isometric RPGs and their associated pace will always make a better foundation for a deep RPG. Starfield will be much more mainstream and that's just fine with me. BG3 will continue to exist.

Yeah indeed, going to be treating Starfield more as a bad FPS with decision making and that's alright by me. Probably be quite nice to have something simpler to play off the back of BG3.

Personally, despite BG3 and Starfield ostensibly being RPGs, they both scratch very different itches for me. I'll be playing both games for a very, very long time.

RPG - Role playing game.

If you get to play a role in shaping of universe, different people/ factions in it, it will very much be a role playing game.

Having played both Skyrim and DOS 2 recently, I don't see one better than the other in that aspect. In fact, Skyrim has more Quest lines where you can make a choice which way you wanna go.

Save a city, cause civil war, support king slayer or widow queen etc. It's all very much fundamental for Bethesda games.

Though how much of it is in Starfield remains to be seen.

I find it interesting that people think Starfield is gonna be so popular when the last few Bethesda games weren't that good. I'm gonna vote Baldurs Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom, Street Fighter 6, and Spider Man 2. Starfield is giving me slight Duke Nukem Forever vibes. Ot kindnof bothers me that it releases next month yet has no demo, hasn't been shown much, hasn't gone gold and has a veil of secrecy around it when Microsoft itself is not very secretive when their games don't have problems.

Bethesda's RPGs rarely have demos and has been shown substantially in a deep dive at 'E3'. Strange how you earlier claimed it was a 'known quantity' but have now pivoted to 'we know nothing about this game'.

There's no veil of secrecy. It's getting another big feature at Gamescom, and will have marketing ramp up this month ahead of release.

And Starfield being an unknown property? Weren't they working on this for the span of Duke Nukem Forever? It's been what, ten years since they started working on Starfield?

Starfield has been in development since 2016. They've stated they commenced development after Fallout 4.
I have no idea what you see as common elements between this title and Duke Nukem Forever.

I'd really like to believe even you know this is complete nonsense :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Launch Skyrim had 94 and 96 percent scores on Metacritic for PC and Xbox 360 respectively, dozens of GOTY awards and sold 10 million units within a month of release, thanks to strong word of mouth.

how you find games you haven't personally played 'underwhelming'?

Pretty much every BG3 video on Larian's youtube channel has less than 600k views...including the BG3 launch trailer. And yet it's doing impressive numbers on Steam. By your logic, BG3 should have had a tepid launch.

Preorders and wishlist position on Steam for Starfield already show the hype is real, but you'll probably learn this in a month.

Finally, the thread title is about GAF hype levels. The only metric to use here is the poll in the OP.

Personally, I'm hyped for both titles. Both should be excellent AAA open world releases that help to push the medium forward. I don't see the sense in attempting to de-market one to elevate the other.

I think, for me at any rate, Spiderman is a known quantity.

It'll be big, loud, with some great set pieces, a solid story, interesting characters etc...and it'll look great, I'm sure.

Worst case scenario, just because of the polish it will get, it's going to be a 7 or 8 out of 10.

Starfield, however, is really an unknown quantity.

We don't really know what exactly it has to offer, what it'll run like, if it has longevity etc...we just don't know.
It could be a 10/10 masterpiece with almost perfect gameplay and performance - or, a broken, buggy mess that feels empty and lifeless.

Still, maybe because of that, I'm more intrigued by what Starfield has to offer.

Todd called it Skyrim in space and a modders paradise and there is a fairly long deep dive going through most gameplay mechanics.
The PC version is unknown but I don’t feel like I know too little about the game itself anymore, at this point I really just want to play it. 25 days left!

While waiting I started another playthrough of Skyrim and I’m kinda blown away by how great it still is. There is jank, buggy animations, sharp polygon edges, blurry textures, etc but what’s behind all that is so good that I just don’t care about the so-so things anymore and is yet again lost in that world again.

Well that’s fine and all but are you really comparing a new IP on the least popular system to a world icon that’s known globally for years and years with countless countless video games, movies, comics, toys, etc? It’s obvious while one trailer has a lot more views than the other. You can literally put almost any other IP against spider man and it would still get more views man.

I’m kind of surprise about the Gaf poll. I expected spider man 2 to be leading but it’s nice to see a lot of excitement for Starfield.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
If I’m being honest I’m excited for spider man 2, starfield seems like a problem just first reaction after fallout, cyberpunk etc. those type of games are never ready.

Starfield, mainly because I can play it on PC day 1. Unfortunately, might have to wait 2 years for a port (yes. I have a PS5 but prefer to play it on PC)

Starfield is a new experience. Spiderman will be good but it won't have the depth of Starfield not by a Longshot.

Honestly, neither. I own Spider-man, but still haven't felt the urge the play it, not sure why. I really think I should one of these days. 2 looks cool because I've loved Venom since I was a kid, so it makes me more interested. Starfield looks neat, and I typically really enjoy Bethesda titles, but I'm not super into the whole space thing. So as a result I feel like whatever hype I have it limited.

If anything I feel like I'm looking forward to Starfield more than Spider-man 2, but it's not by a gigantic margin for me.

I don’t really understand why exactly these two games as they have pretty much nothing in common and released on different platforms.

Do I want to play Spider-man 2? Not really as I felt I had enough of Spider-man when I played the first one on ps4. My superhero fatigue has something to do with it.

I also really want to play Starfield because Bethesda has made some of my favourite games of all time. I’m not afraid of being overwhelmed with content but I’m a bit sceptical of how it is going to play at 30fps.
