Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

If you're running a 3.00-4.51 Firmware PlayStation PS5, you can easily jailbreak and enable it for homebrew thanks to the amazing efforts from the community. In todays episode we take a closer look at what you can do with a hacked/jailbroken PS5 and why im excited for the future of this particular scene.

Firmware 5.00 was released March 2022 so unless you've not updated your PS5 in 2 years you're out of luck. Useless for the vast majority, doubt the PS5 will ever be cracked open to the extent of the PSP/Vita or pretty much every Nintendo Console.

Neat to see, but I withhold from jailbreaking my consoles until their respective store has been taking offline. At least it will have been worked on and be available 15 years from now when that happens for the PS5.

Also, MVG effect, now that he's talked about it it's a race to see how long this is taken down.
Can I though? You can still easily jailbreak a PS4 aslong as your on the correct firmware. It’s only a web exploit. If one host goes down another pops up within a matter of hours.

I dug out my PS4 a year or so a go and switched it on. It started downloading the update. I checked and it was surprisingly on 9.0. I instantly disconnected It from the net. Still haven’t got around to doing anything with it though. Wonder if it’s worth anything.

Once an exploit is found it generally opens the door to a cat and mouse situation between hackers and the manufacturer. I can see a lot of people disconnecting there ps5s from the net and waiting for potential exploits for whatever firmware there on, even potentially buying a second “legit” one to use until something becomes available for whatever firmware there on.

You are comparing updating a console firmware to upgrading Windows operating system? Why?

Because they said someone would have not had to update their PS5 in two years. That's nothing compared to some of the ticking ransomware timebombs people are posting from here.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I originally bought two PS5s, one to keep offline to play with this stuff eventually, and one to play. Last summer I gave up waiting, and gifted my "offline only" PS5 to my daughter to play Final Fantasy XVI. Oh well.

The thing about this is that you can only run stuff in the exploit that would have run on that version of the console anyway - so this exploit, as far as piracy is concerned, is only good for PS4 games and older PS5 games. Very interesting for homebrew though! And I would have liked to play through some PS4 games with 60fps hacks...

Anyway, they just released a new exploit this morning that apparently works up to firmware 5.50 which is a few months newer and has better game compatibility.

On the PS4 aren’t there dedicated groups that backport games with newer firmwares to work on PS4 with exploited firmwares? As cyberheater (I don’t know how to link usernames into posts) says, once your in your in. Workarounds will be found.

Yes, but sometimes there's only so much that can be done. When a game releases and requires a newer firmware, it's because that game was built using the newer SDK from Sony. The backporting process requires the modders to remap functions from the newer SDK to similar, older functions in the older SDK. Sometimes, this is possible. Sometimes, it simply isn't (because the newer SDK takes advantage of newer functionality that sometimes doesn't exist in the older SDK).

That's a lot of work to get an individual game running. With the PS4 we really only saw that start taking shape at the end of the generation, when the flow of new games dried up, and it became clear that Sony wasn't going to be making huge new improvements to their SDK on the console going forward. Right now, the energy on the scene with the PS5 is focused on trying to find new kernel exploits in the higher firmware versions, because if those are found that means every game that runs in the newer firmware will automatically work without any backporting work for individual titles.

No matter how you slice it, a console like this is most likely always going to be behind the curve of new game releases unless a hardware entry point is found (like the Switch has).

That’s fair, thanks for the comprehensive explanation. Was not aware of the sdk side and the updates! Thanks for information! Guess it’s just a wait and see how things develop going forwards from here on in!

As far as aware you need quite and old switch for cfw

I always laugh at this, one of my friends bought an R4 for DS years ago and I asked him if it was just to pirate games and he said it was for homebrew. To my knowledge, it was never used for anything but pirate games.

Saying homebrew has such a thin veneer of respectability, that I can't believe anyone says it, nobody believes it. 😂

That's my point you need very old switch to do cfw. Can't imagine there being many v1 out there.
They sold over 40m of them. It's quite easy to pickup a pre-owned hackable switch. Finding a low firmware PS4 or PS5 on the other hand... They are usually sold at a premium if you can find them.

I thought that all switches could be hacked with the mod chip (admittedly I don’t have one so not sure?)

I’d probably going the emulation route if your not using it for the handheld aspect due to greater options for frame rates etc

I have a 9.0 PS4 but haven’t put cfw on it yet, wonder if it might be worth selling it. Though I don’t want to lose access to PSVR and a few games like gravity rush, last guardian and errr senran kagura lol

Be interesting to see Linux running on it in the future. One can dream of steamos or something given the amd apu in it.
A PS5 that runs SteamOS or Linux or anything like that would make the's value proposition skyrocket even past the Series X's previous bang for buck. At that point you'd have a working PC and a Playstation in one device.

Yes with modchips all switch's can be hacked. Softmod only v1.

AFAIK there isn't CFW for PS4 and probably never will be since the scene moved to PS5, who knows if PS5 will get CFW either. Without CFW the jailbreak is just going to be for pirating games and no online functionality, basically worthless to anyone but pirates.

Imagine a situation where you had a PlayStation capable of running Linux/Steam OS and an Xbox capable of running Windows. I’d be down for that.

Though I guess if you could run Windows on Xbox steam is aswel would be able to rub as well.

From what videos be seen there is the jailbreak option which allows the use of some (albeit) limited emulation functionality. But yes actual cfw like on the og Xbox isn’t available to that degree of customisation and is primarily used for the sailors of the high seas.

I miss the days of proper cfw like the aforementioned og Xbox and the media capabilities that brought into the living room. I guess these says with devices like the nvidia shield and the like it’s a moot point but I’m a really big tinkerer when it comes to stuff like that and get real enjoyment out of setting stuff up like that (and then pretty much never using it)

As long as you can't use PSN with it I'm all for this.

I use my PS2 with a hacked memory card and HDD, my GameCube has a modchip and SD card for game storage, my PSP, Vita, and PS3 all have custom firmware.

I won't bother trying stuff with my PS4 until the PS6 is out probably and the same cadence for PS5, but by then this stuff will be very mature.

I recall in PS3 era even if you wanted to avoid an update, newer games would be loaded with updates on the disk and the game could not be played until the update was installed. I guess if you literally haven't turned on the machine on in 2 years you might be in luck.

Think the 360 also did this as well. Maybe I’m mistaken though.

It's a complete joke. what legitimate purpose could there possibly be to hack a console lol

I’ve long advocated for this. I know people say that ms wouldn’t do it because it would eat into there Windows os earnings and people would buy them as cheap pc. But if they offered that as an additional extra that you had to pay for (just like developer mode) so you had to buy a Windows key to open up that functionality then I don’t see a problem?

Well like I just said, to use the hardware with a different os/gaming system. It may not be what the original intent was but I'm not sure I would call that "illegitimate". Not everyone involved in hacking a console is a pirate, that's easy enough to do on pc anyhow.

I've hacked my PSP so that I can rip the games from the UMD and play them on my Steam Deck or on PC. Did the same with my Switch. Completely legal.

Imagine a world where xbmc never existed and expanded into kodi, due to Xbox been hacked. It paved the way for a lot of streaming applications and what would become standard going forwards.

The vast majority do it for piracy I'm sure but there are lots of other uses too. Mods, Emulators, homebrew ports. With a hacked Vita you can run your games at better framerates and resolutions with overclocking, and play opensource ports of games like Diablo (devilution X) and you can stream pc games to it with moonlight and even stream ps5 to it.

Exactly, for ps5 some people would do this just to play drive club at 60fps.......

I like the idea of the slim ps5 repurposed as a steam machine or windows machine. Sony prob doesn't though!
I would imagine that getting hardware drivers would require a fair bit of work.
