FF Rebirth sold less than FFXVI in Japan at launch (336,027 vs 262,656) Retail

I see many are ignoring that all Playstation software is struggling in Japan. I mean you had Tekken 8 which launched and it only sold 20,000, yes 20k copies when it released. On an install base of 5mil+.... I remember when Yakuza would release with over 3x the sales of Infinite Wealth on Playstation 3 in the first week, despite Infinite Wealth being arguably the best game they've ever put out. RE4 launching with under 100k units etc....

Sure FF is struggling in Japan, but the bigger picture is that the majority of Playstation software has declined massively in Japan and is struggling.

The vast majority of software is being sold on the Switch. I think there are multiple Switch games that have launched with higher sales than this entire top 10 combined? 🤯

As for Rebith, I think it'll probably have a bit higher digital sales than XVI as it had the dual pack with Remake for the same price and should also have better word of mouth as a larger section of the fanbase love it. Then you have both Remake and part 3 to drive more sales either way in time. So let's see where the overall sales are for each FF7 game in about 3-5 years time. When they will all be released and also be on PC and possibly even the Switch 2.

FF VII rebirth is kind a brand new game tho
Well that much is obvious. It's still a remake of a beloved classic title with a familiar setting and cast, in addition to being a direct sequel to FFVII Remake. Compared to the clean slate that was FFXVI.

JRPG weren't selling 10 million units in 2004, in fact most games weren't. WRPGs evolved as have CRPGs. JRPGs have devolved in many respects.

FF 7, 8, 12, and 15 all sold over 10 million. And 13, 10, and 9 sold around 9 million.

Pc gaming is growing in japan also its announced to be a 3 month exclusive. Its what happens when you only have timed exclusives. People just wait it out.

FF10 + 10-2 originals and the remaster have now sold over 20mil combined.

Whilst FF games are very front loaded I think they have a good history of selling over an extended period of time, albeit slowly.

7R part 1 is now at 7-8mil sold and should get to 9-10mil by the time all the games are out.

So far we're seeing a 440k difference between Remake and Rebirth in Japan. Ok the PS5 is less popular than PS4, but seriously, where the fuck did those 440k people go? Are they ALL people who just don't own a PS5? Because I believe if Remake landed with you, and you had a great time with it, you'd be making sure you'd have a PS5 to play the next part.
Could be that they are waiting for word of mouth. Or the 'intergrade' version. Or the PC version. Or the Switch 2 version. Who knows. I also think this is a huge drop compared to FF7 Remake.

Perhaps the digital sales are more this time around.

I know PS5 being unpopular in Japan plays a part in this, but I really do think we're underestimating how much potential damage they did by pulling the rug out from under people in Remake, by revealing this isn't actually a remake of FFVII. Love it or not, that did turn a lot of people off.

Combination of lower install base and possibly higher digital share, maybe.

But we really need to see the digital sales to see where things stand.

Globally in Japan seems to be a thing it seems.

I’ll wait until SE makes a PR for first week, or first month sales.

Rebirth seems to be doing way better than 16 WW (excluding Japan).

FF has sucked since FFX and have been selling by brand/name, last one I bought was xv ... never more .. or they come back to turn based or they can go fckoff

Final Fantasy series has been declining in quality for years. It shouldn't come as a surprise that it's been bleeding fans. Then with FF7 specifically, it is a remake being done in parts, of course subsequent parts are going to see lower sales. Not everybody who bought the first part is going to buy the second part (maybe they didn't like the direction of the remake, maybe they haven't bought a PS5 yet, etc), and people who didn't buy the first part most likely won't buy the second part either.

I see many are ignoring that all Playstation software is struggling in Japan.
Really don't understand these takes. Rebirth is estimated to have done what, 42k physical sales in the UK? So Japan does 262k and that means Playstation software is struggling? US is probably the only country that will do higher, and it has almost 3 times the population.

Everyone was saying Ff7:remake was the best thing since slice bread, and it didn't really make and impact on me outside of nostalgia, and I remember hating the side quest, so I'm apprehensive towards picking up rebirth.
The 10's of mini games and proformance mode proformance doesnt inspire me to want to pick up the game right now. I waiting on a deep sale personally (maybe next year).

I wonder if it other people who feel the same.
This is the most complete FF since X and It's currently tied with X as my favorite in the series. I didn't like remake at all.

Also, it looks like is the lowest first week selling (Retail) Final Fantasy mainline game in Japan.

[PS3] Final Fantasy XIII - 1.501.964 (Media Create)
[PS4] Final Fantasy XV - 716.649 (Famitsu)
[PS4] Final Fantasy VII Remake - 702.853 (Famitsu)
[PS5] Final Fantasy XVI – 336.027 (Famitsu)
[PS5] Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - 262.656 (Famitsu)
Final Fantasy XIII did its magic on a failing PS3 (Wii was still dominate), if I remember correctly. The IP had immense power back then. Unfortunately, it was probably that same game that undid it too.

What I find alarming with Rebirth is that, considering digital sales don't... ever, I think, eclipse boxed sales in Japan, you could double Rebirth's sales and still see a serious decline from Remake and XV, plus XVI had digital sales too, so in all likelihood, Rebirth was fully beat out by 16. I'm a bit surprised to be honest. I'm curious why. I think SE will seriously consider Steam, and possibly a Switch 2, release down the line, and may even start launching on those platforms alongside Playstation for a third game, save for money hats buying exclusivity. Granted, SE has said they're going to be more dependent on the West now, and we'll see how Rebirth's sales fare there.

Doesn't help that Sony basically gave Japan a fat middle finger during the hardware shortages too. I don't think they took well to that.

Worldwide FF7 Rebirth is going to outsell FF16. The inevitable SE press release is going to legit shook some of these naysayers.
This was what I was expecting too. But now, I'm seeing it will basically come down to North America primarily (United States). UK is showing a decline too, with 16 doing better.

Elden Ring and RE4 don't even manage 100K but weeb trash like FF gets 200K+?

Japan really needs to get into modern times and let go of their hard-ons for JRPGs with teenage protagonists.
How fucking crazy is it to see a fucking Armored Core game in a top 10. And not only that but in the upper half of a top 10.

I love Remake, Rebirth is a massive step up....probably the biggest step up in a sequel ever.

Its easily an early GOTY candidate and I think it's one of the best games of this generation (along side BG3) and possibly one of the best JRPGs ever made.

I'm going to assume it will sell well worldwide and will have pretty decent legs going forward.

This is a very good point that many JRPG lovers may not want to embrace. There's a ceiling to what JRPGs can do. It's probably between 8-10 million units globally now. Which isn't bad, but it's good to be honest about it. Anything more than 8 million for any JRPG is HUGE nowadays. It's not 2004 anymore.

What would you have said the ceiling was for a traditional CRPG at this time last year?

If you make a truly great game it won’t matter. Modern FF is a shitshow and has been for years and years.

I may anger some people saying this, but from the discourse I see online, both Final Fantasy VII Remake and XVI had a better critical reception than a user reception.

I truly think many people first got burned by Remake and some more by XVI and Rebirth is on the receiving end of a user trepidation to buy the game because of that.

Devil May Cry 3 had something similar happen. DMC 1 sold well, DMC 2 sold very well based on the previous game, but was roasted by fans and then DMC 3 had lower sales than 2 for a long time because people were burned by 2 and took some convincing to get 3, even though it was the BEST game in the series until that point.

Hopefully good word of mouth helps Rebirth pick up the slack and have some legs.

I mean, it's the second biggest launch on PS5 in japan, so i's hard to see these numbers as indicative of something bad.

Too damn long between sequels

It was just a totally stupid decision all around. Usually, you can buy a game's sequel without playing the original and it's fine. In this case, because it's one game divided into three parts, there's no real sensible reason to buy the game if you haven't finished part 1. What percentage of people who bought part one actually finished it?

By the time the third installment releases who's gonna still be interested outside of the diehards?

Ive barely seen any advertisement for it here. Compared to Yakuza, Zelda TOTK or Street Fighter 6 etc. Weird Sony and Square arent adverting this

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
You know some might be just waiting for a Trilogy Pack.
Playing a game split up into 3 and released every 2-3 years kinda does that.
Despite one part being bigger then a lot of games people will still see it as unfinished and having to wait to continue it.
Just a thought.

Oh.. Physical sales? Yeah, not surprising. Physical sucks. Who wants that?

master-pain-gif.gif

Me, i got FF16 physical and also i bought original soundtrack as well. There are people who still buy and they are not small.

This is part 2 of a trilogy game, one thats sold on a different platform even. Normally that won't outsell the original. You effectively limit your userbase to people who have bought and liked the first. I can imagine lots of players were disappointed by Remake as well, and they might not return. And there might be players not having or wanting a PS5 to begin with, and this one is PS5 only.

Rebirth, being reviewed better and more appreciated in general could be an eventual outlier.

We get a full picture once digital sales are also being reported.

But.. I thought the install base really mattered /s

There's something wrong with Final Fantasy and it's that it's not selling what it should. And this should have sold more than FF15 and FF16.

If only there were a way to release the same game across multiple platforms to sell more copies..
