Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles |OT| Ramza... What did you get?

Is this game simpler than tactics ogre? Tried that as my first srpg but felt completely overwhelmed.

I would say Jeanne d'Arc is simpler than this, which I would say is similar to TO. This released after TO, so it's a little more modern/streamlined, but still somewhat archaic / old school IMO.

The same thing our friend did but in Fullscreen. From my memories i remember FFT on PSX being a "clean" game even on the original hardware.

Switch Docked (The new light shader, ambient occlusion and the texture enhancements were on point. The dithering IMHO not much, but i understand that's an artistic choice.)

In terms of tactics games complexity it's probably (from least to most complex):
  1. Jeanne D'Arc
  2. Triangle Strategy
  3. Final Fantasy Tactics
  4. Tactics Ogre

You really find TS less complicated than FFT? I'd have thought it would go hardest - it has chain attacks (so if the enemies attack near other enemies they will gang up and get free attacks killing your units), the enemies feel harder, and the maps are gigantic.

Fair enough, I agree with it overall, but I definitely felt like TS was the hardest of the bunch for me.

IMGur now blocking by region, cannot see anything xD

For ya Brit... :messenger_grinning_sweat:

One thing that i only noticed now

The light inside the church when Ovelia is praying. Sunlight going through the stained glass windows.
When you go out for battle on the remake. Cloudy and raining (without the orange sunset aura). WTF square lol

It still looks less detailed to me than with all the jaggies in their full glory, the AA on the textures really softens the image quality IMO. Should do one more with just native res, no filtering (beyond a linear 200/300% upscale w/o smoothing). It's a bit rough on the eyes, but there's something really nice about how that scene looks in motion in Classic mode.

I can see why they went with the dither filter: to unify the blocky 2D sprites with the smooth 3D terrain and buildings. Also gives the game a painted-on-canvas look. Looks pretty good to me, but I can see why some people perfer the classic look.

The filter give us a vibe that we are seeing an old tale as being retold Alazlam from an old book (which is exactly the case)
On small screens it looks nice... on a 65' 4k Tv not.

At least give us a small pattern dithering or a on/off for the big screens.

Open in tabs, flip back and forth a few times between tabs.

Notice how much more detail is in the grass textures/building textures in the non-upscaled/AA version I took a screenshot of.

You lose a lot of detail in this version IMO vs the classic one. I mean it's mostly there, but it just turns everything so soft and understated.

Started playing last night and loving the upgraded UI and the added VA is amazing! One thing I've always loved about this game is the soundtrack and I'm glad they didn't mess with it. Still one of the best soundtracks of any video game ever made.

That's the original Psone, right (4:3 also)?
I'm using the WOTL version of PSP. Even on the PSP we had the bilinear filtering (AFAIR)

That's the classic mode from this game. PSP didn't have filtering did it? I think it just runs at 240p.

I think you could validly argue TS/FFT/TO as more complex than the others, but for me the lack of unit customization (each unit is their own class, no mixing abilities from classes) and the lack of equip-able items outside of two accessories severely limited how deep the game can be. Chain attacks are cool but not that complex to pull off.

I've been loving this so far, just completed chapter 1 last night and it's so much more emotional with the voice acting. I know the FFT story front and back, but the VA really drives the plight of the Corpse Brigade during chapter 1 to new levels for me. You really do feel like a monster as go through it and Argath does not help at all.

I'm not sure if some rates have been messed with, but this is my first time trying to use a Mystic seriously and it's fantastic. The cast speed on Hesitation is pretty quick, and when casting it on a cluster of enemies if I just get one successful hit that's game-changing as it essentially removes them from the battle for quite a while. I watched a tier list that was raving about Orator and it's Entice ability, albeit low probability, to just irreversibly remove enemies from battles. I want to play around with that as well.

Played a few hours having never played FFT before. It's good, but first impression is that Tactics Ogre Reborn is better.

After all these years... I'm finally back to the
Weigraf
fight. I remember it being the hardest fight in the game for me and sure enough I go in and get stomped.
I also remembered to always keep multiple save files though so I can go back to the world map and then would just have top redo the fight in front.

If I remember last time, I was using a gun to shoot him from a distance and then tried to play keep away I believe? This time around I have Ramza as a dragoon and I can jump from a long distance but he can also hit from a long distance. He kills me in 2 hits.
Any advice before I go off looking for strategies? Maybe I just absolutely need to gain a few more levels for more HP as well...

You could cheese it in the original by constantly casting the power and speed buff on yourself and healing yourself with auto potion.

I usually hate any kind of HD treatment of 2D stuff, but I like what they did here. It looks great on my Switch 2 screen. I would love to see them do a remaster of Xenogears with this treatment.

That PPSSPP version look hideous. Smooth 3D elements + 2D pixelated sprites is 🤢

Classic looks really good, put a good CRT filter on that and it's gonna look perfect.

Should I be grinding units and hiring folks from the mercenary hire guy? I'm in chapter 2, and I'm doing ok on the easiest mode but I think I'll hit a wall soon enough.

When I joined chapter 2 the first enemies were level 11 and I'm level 5 and some 4. Plus most fights cap at 5 units I can use so I'm not sure what even bother with mercenary hires. Leveling is a chore even with JP boost.

I love everything but the combat. Not necessarily an actual fight but all the grinding the game seems to be wanting.

Huge spoilers, but you don't need levels really. For example, here is a video showing all the bosses in the game (so don't watch it, but it exists), beaten by a level 1 Ramza and company (they just reset his EXP and stats back to level 1 after each fight, and go through the entire game + bonus content at level 1).

Basically abilities + gear >>>>>> levels.

So I can just play on and level classes I like as long as I keep them geared up?

Cool! 😎

BITCH YOU REALLY GONNAH GIVE ME THE TUTORIAL ON SHOPPING IN TOWN AFTER IM ALREADY THERE!?

I had no clue you could click on a stage AFTER you're already standing on it...

Made it all the way to Dorter before accidentally figuring this shit out...

Yeah, I actually really enjoy leveling in sRPGs myself, but I guess my point was the game's been broken down and analyzed and studied a million times over, probably every possible strategy you can use and combination of abilities has been documented, there's just so many possibilities and combinations you shouldn't feel the only way to progress is by grinding levels. There's definitely a will to a way, as they say.

I love the English voice-acting, but I do miss some of the WotL voices. Phil LaMarr as Ramza and Robin Atkin Downes as Delita, in particular.

Haven't played this game in ages. I just started, but I'm curious: does the updated script (or "re-write"/touch-up, etc.)--which I believe was once again handled by Matsuno--work in new references or easter eggs to Vagrant Story or FFXII? I love that they were all tangentially connected, even if it was fairly vague.
