Ecco the Dolphin remaster seemingly coming to Nintendo Switch, first details

The previously-teased remaster of the classic SEGA action adventure game Ecco the Dolphin is apparently bound for Nintendo Switch.

That information comes from this week's issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu. In the two-page spread, Nintendo Switch is the only listed platform for the project. A release on that system would make sense, and it's certainly capable of handling it.

Series creator Ed Annunziata also gave some insight into the Ecco the Dolphin remaster while speaking with Famitsu. According to Annunziata, while people are familiar with the game, many haven't experienced it to the end. The remaster will let the team spruce up the visuals and offer a more accessible version.

Annunziata confirmed that there are plans to include the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit eras together in a single package. Additionally, a system is planned that allows real-time switching of visual styles. The remaster is intended to be "something that allows you to experience the history of the series itself." While the name is still being decided, "Ecco Complete" could end up being the final title.

A remaster of Ecco: The Tides of Time was previously teased as well. On top of that, a brand new game is planned, though Annunziata only asked fans to "look forward to further updates."

What were the Ecco the Dolphin games? I just remember them seeming to be (don't think I ever played one) nice looking underwater exploration type games - but I started one of the later ones up in an emulator - and ...Aliens?

32 bit era? What ECCO the dolphin released on Sega Saturn?
I remember an Ecco game announced and demo'd for the 32X, but the full game never ended up being released. 🤷‍♂️

The original Ecco games do not hold up well at all. They are frustrating and difficult and obtuse. I hope it's more than a coat of paint.

April 21st is when the countdown timer resets; it might be the date the launch or announcement occurs.
I hope it's cel-shaded because the realistic dolphin look puts people off.

I think for those with the nostalgia goggles they are not so bad .My big hope is that they have both the genesis versions and sega cd versions, music etc was different between them. I dont know about the DC / PS2 ecco revisitation and honestly it was totally off in the weeds and even weirder especially the DC version as far as knowing where to go. There was Ecco JR which is a whole other mess. and I think some Gamegear version? I cant recall much. But yeah the Ecco games were not like modern games..... but if you played them then they do "hold up" once you know what to expect I think, Its no different in the way something like Street fighter 2 or something doesnt " hold up " because the entire weight and way characters interact is foreign to modern gaming.

There was already a remasted on Windows 3X PCs back then. It was the same game with all assets in higher resolution. I only heard this recently and i was pretty surprised.

I thought that was basically the SEGA CD version? The SEGA CD version was different visuals like, the dolphin model etc in the original on SEGA CD looked smoother like the tides of time model on the genesis later, but both were just better on sega CD and the audio I want to say- was the same on the PC version. I owned t he PC version as a teenager, but I do not remember it very well, I was not a big fan of the way it controlled but remember listening to the music, and being somewhat into the soundtrack but ultimately my nostalgia is for the Genesis versions of both games.

It's a time travel action/adventure with some puzzle solving. And yes aliens.

I have a love/hate relationship with this series.

I love how unique it was, but the difficulty was insane.

Never played the DC version. Shame that one doesn't appear to be included as that looks like it was the peak of the franchise.

Now- THIS SAID and accepted.... Please when looking at this direct screen grab of the game running on a more modern PC- now picture the Genesis/SEGA CD game running on a smoothed out CRT and the PC version running on a 14" CRT running 640x480 at best... I do believe its correct but it didnt "look like that" at the time on a PC monitor... unfortunately. It def was smoother, at the time , later on I did think it was more like the SEGA CD version but see now yes, it is smoothed out and there is less banding if any.. but again... depending on what you were running it on and your color depth on your PC Id imagine. This video shows the detail modes.. it would depend on your PC as to how well it ran.

For instance if you were running a 486 like I was...

Ah, back when it first came out, i'm very amazed with the graphic, so realistic (at the time) good old days. I played it few years ago via emulator, it's harder than before : ))

Very cool game tho

My brother and I played the DC version when we were younger and had no clue what to do except swim around and enjoy the visuals. 😂 Wouldn't mind revisiting this.

I know! All good, just sayin. The PC versions of those 90s games were always way way too clean for me.
The other Genesis to PC ports like Comix Zone, Sonic CD, Sonic & Knuckles, etc didn't get the same treatment though. They use the same assets as the Genesis versions.

I do agree they are still too clean as well but for a different reason. The same reason as when playing them on emulators on a modern display without a good CRT shader to blend the pixels. The Ecco The Dolphin PC port at least made an attempt to use those extra pixels, which i appreciate. They just needed a better art director maybe. I still do like the way the dolphins look in that version tbh.

I loved the PS2 version. It's both creepy and very relaxing. I don't know how much time I spent swimming upside down and jumping out of the water. Balancing and having the sky beneath you is zen. No other water based game surpassed its controls.

A real wow moment for 11-12 year old me in 1993

Finally finding the Big Blue in the arctic levels... the thing was massive. And mindblowing. His body must've taken up five or six screens at the time.

Why are they calling this a remaster? I thought this was going to be a complete remake of the original game, using a different engine and code base. Or is this going to be some rebuild of the PC game with different aspect ratio support and a few other updates? I could not imagine what a remaster of the original Genesis game would look like. The original 16-bit game looks perfect, honestly one of my favorite looking games on the system.

The PC version did have more colours, using 256 colour mode. But it still looks like the Sega CD version.

\yet the Genesis version still has the better sprite. The PC port looks like a clip art image of a Dolphin. Of course the gradients are nicer. IMO, the best version of the original Ecco is on the Sega CD. This and Ecco 2 were included with the Sega Genesis Mini 2 units for both NA and japan. Ecco 1 on the Sega CD ports is almost identical to the Genesis/ MD game, but it does have a CD soundtrack, an additional intro sequences, and it also includes sic additional stages not seen in the Genesis/ MD version.

Ecco Tides of Time includes SGI pre-rendered cutscenes:

Ecco 1 did get a really interesting port for 3DS:

This was announced today.

OH, I see. Yeah, it seems most likely that they obtained the source codes for the PC port and are modifying them to run on modern PC's. All this pre-hype and no trailer, or at least a screenshot?

Wish there was more info for this, but it looks like there will be more in the summer. The website has a ton of the remaster music tracks available for listening, which is awesome.

This was a Famitsu exclusive reveal:

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

In "Ecco the Dolphin: Complete," a feature called "Time Dial (tentative)" will be implemented. This will allow players to instantly switch the game's visuals and sound to different eras. It will be possible to seamlessly move between four eras—8-bit (Master System), 16-bit (Mega Drive), 32-bit (PC), and 64-bit (the modern version of this game)—without leaving the stage.
"Ecco the Dolphin: Complete," containing both "Ecco the Dolphin" films, has been announced. The original cast has reunited to revive the classic ocean action series."Ecco the Dolphin: Complete," containing both "Ecco the Dolphin" films, has been announced. Each era features different sprites, backgrounds, music, and HUD specifications, but Ecco's position, health, and progress are maintained, ensuring a seamless gameplay experience. The "Time Dial" can be used in almost all situations, including boss battles. It can also be fixed to a specific era for speedruns or ranking challenges.

"The key feature is that players can experience the series' theme of 'time' through their own actions, and the 'Time Dial' is a system that enables a new experience of traveling through the history of the series itself.

Windows 9X port with slightly higher resolution sprites and a slightly larger colour pallet:

8-Bit (Game Gear/ Master System hybrid) Looks like the Game Gear colour pallate being used.

This looks more like a straight-up remake of the original game(s) using Unity engine or something like that. At least this is my assumption. Either that, or they have built a new version of the game using the old Windows 9X source code. There is no mention on what game engine is being used for this one.
