Yeah. I'm guessing it is their way of boosting the site's prominence or reputation. If you have "media people" posting there, you'll get more traffic. So they shield them from criticism.
As opposed to GAF, where we roast them, so they leave, lol.
To be fair, he said the CPU was more powerful, not the overall machine. I'm not a tech guy, but my understanding is that he was technically correct about that.
I'm not defending Tom Warren, just trying to point out what he actually said.

Series X CPU = 3.8 ghz
Series S CPU = 3.6 ghz
PS5 CPU = 3.5 ghz
It's why any cheaper Helix devices will use the same Magnus CPU SOC. Consistency for the devs.

It's a fascination with seeing how a weaker console compares to a stronger one. I don't recall any specific Verge articles saying that the Series S is outperforming PS5, over things other then the value prospect etc for the launch prices.

I think the reach and engagement of those Microsoft PR articles back in Phil's time, and the way they seemed to have an impact on the internet, were due to the "Xbox ambassadors" echoing the article.

No, you simply aren't understanding. And you are purposefully not paying attention. You were here on GAF back then. You know the context!!! But since you don't want to be honest now, lets remind you. The context is people didn't understand Mark Cerny's approach to the PS5's Power Profile, because it was so different. Tom Warren took advantage of that.
- Most consoles use a fixed-frequency, and variable power. CPU runs at a fixed clock, GPU runs at a fixed clock
- PS5 changed that and uses Fixed Power, but variable frequency. The total SoC's power budget is fixed, but the frequency of the chip is allowed to vary\change.
Tom Warren is smart enough to understand that Sony were going in a different direction, but didn't want to understand "HOW" it works. Hence that stupid tweet of his. Because he's foundation is to always favor Xbox for "X" reasons.

He's simply stating the factual max theoretical caps for the respective CPU's. The PS5 CPU is capped at 3.5ghz, the Series S and X are a little bit higher than that, disabling SMT makes the gap a bit more higher than that.
We've all seen the output over the last 6~ years, the Series S did not outperform the PS5, that's not what Tom even said in the first place.
edit: The Series S with SMT is actually 3.4ghz, so I guess we can rabble about Tom being wrong there.

IIRC it wasn't even technically correct because the higher speed was without simultaneous multi threading, with SMT enabled it's 0.1 GHz below the PS5 CPU frequency (the only spec they've given is with SMT enabled) but that difference is probably negligble anyway due to the whole variable clock+power shift thing.
At the end of the day whatever difference there is it's probably not meaningful. Tom Warrens post reads more like stupid low effort console warring at best, or spreading misinformation at worst.

I think the confusion is that yes the X and S have both 3.6gz, but 3.6 is X smt but 3.8 single and 3.4 is S smt but 3.6 single. There isnt a direct 1:1 comparison between the PS5 and the series S due to workload and power delivery fluxuations for the CPU.

1. Drop the price the of Xbox to firesale levels. Bundle it with 6 months of Gamepass Ultimate. I am talking Less than $200 for XSS and $300 for XSX. Advertise the fuck out of it. You've got to pull out all of the stops. Go hard and don't go at all.
2. Make your future games 100% exclusive to the console and/or Microsoft store. No Steam. No Playstation.
If Microsoft does the first one, they MIGHT have a path to consider 2. At that point only then will I believe that Microsoft is actually serious about making Xbox viable.

There was lot of speculation back then, that lower cpu load on Series S could be beneficial.
None of the games push any of the systems these days so turned out meaningless. Just like a lot of customisation in the systems.

Yeah. I think it may be related to compatibility across different consoles in the same family. The CPU in the Series S and Series X are relatively the same. As are the CPUs in PS5 and PS5 Pro. My guess is variance in the CPU would require a lot more tooling in the dev APIs. Just a hunch......don't really have any idea. But the pattern is there.
