33 Megapixels of sexy = 16x current HDTV

So we're talking about 4320p (4x 1080p in each direction)

The good news is this will help with viewing angles for lenticular 3D (glasses-free).

I don't think most people have a house big enough for a TV that would actually show the benefits of this.

I don't even own an HD tv yet and just got a computer with a 1080p monitor over the summer. Are they already gearing up a new HD format? Are they going to re-release movies again in a higher resolution?

Why? This seems absolutely unnecessary for now. TV screens are nowhere near big enough to warrant that level of resolution. I have a 61" HDTV, and my parents have a 71" HDTV. Both are excellent at 1080p. I'd think you'd need something around 100" to even need that crazy level of resolution.

But of course. How else would you pay for their lifestyle?

The fact that they just agreed on a standard should give a hint of how long it's left until this becomes your mainstream resolution.

Manufacturers are getting desperate to keep their market from becoming saturated.

It's cool in theory, but practically only 42"+ can enjoy it.

I'll bet the Wii looks terrible on it.

heh

Back to UHD... guess that would be great for IMAX film.

I don't know how much resolution you can get out of it, but 4k is pretty much enough for 35mm in my opinion.

What about archiving, tv studio equipment, time for encoding??
Nice idea guys, about 10 years too soon.
Film transfers & restorations are done in 4K quite often, so..

There have even been 6K and 8K transfers.

HDTV was first tested in the 70s.

This is incredible! I've been reading about 4k resolutions. Yes, our current gen games will look disgusting on these but imagine the power of the visuals! WOW! It's gonna pop like crazy!

Is this the official 4k standard?
That's waaaay bigger than 4K.

4K is 3996×2160 for a 1.85:1 image.

Edit: 7680x4320 is 8K. I know some older movies have been mastered at that resolution, and I think there have been broadcast tests.

For everyone asking why this tech is useful:

  • While you'd need a crazy large screen to visually resolve the full resolution, you can actually resolve above 1080p with larger screens (and especially projectors)
  • The physical display resolution is useful for doing things like polarized 3D at 1080p without display shuttering
  • This makes lenticular 3D (glasses-free) more viable as it dramatically improves viewing angles
  • For people with large screens, subtly improves 1080p (and lower) content via upscaling. Obviously that assumes good upscaling, but the math for 1080p->UHD is more straightforward versus 480p->1080p.
  • More is obviously better.

I hope they hurry up with this, because otherwise we'll never see high res monitors beyond 1080p or 1440p. Damn HDTV hype slowed everything down.

It was only pushed back after network execs realized you could clearly make out Jack Tripper's nutsack hanging out of his shorts.

Also, everyone says you need like 100"+ screen for 4k to even be noticeable. But, you would have to sit further back to see the entire screen, which would diminish your perception of the higher resolution right? So like, what's the point? Am I doing this right?

Unscaled NES output would be 1.56 inches wide on a 60 inch diagonal TV. (60 inch diagonal at 16:9 = 52.3 inches horizontal, 256/(4*1920) = 0.03)

LOL

What? 7680x4320 on a 27" screen is only 326 DPI aka a "Retina Display"

You're not holding the TV a foot from your face like you are with a cell phone. So no, density doesn't have to be as high as it would be for a cell phone.

There is a maxium frames per second the human eye can see right? so this may be a dumb question but is there a maxium resolution or whatever as well?

I'm never holding a cell phone a foot away from my face. Normally it is at resting arms length... about the same distance my monitor is away from my face right at this moment.

He wasn't alone.
Will probably just wait for Turbo to come out.

What I really hope they do is find a better way to send out firmware updates or upgrade tech that is supposed to be "agreed upon". Hi hdmi and bluray.

2030?

2016 at the latest. and I can't wait. this is the only technology that makes me want to upgrade anymore. 3D is dead to me (current implementations, anyway). But this? This is win.
