The toys, but they wrote in their own twist with it, kind of like Twilight's baloon. But it works, much like Angel, Tank is his owners polar opposite.
Keep in mind s2 was mostly finished being written before the brony thing. There was no pandering in mind. The animators occasionally toss in things, like the derpy boms, but plot and story have been done for a long time.

This episode proved why Rainbow Dash is the Worst Pony Ever. Not only did she manipulate every pet and utilised a loophole to set up a winner at the last minute, she was a complete arsehole to everyone and threatened the life of all the competitors.
Awesome music, funny visual gags, great comedy, incredible pay-off. This is the first Rainbow Dash episode that doesn't suck shit, even if she's a complete bitch. 10/10

She stayed true to the rules she set out to begin with. Wasn't a loophole. And none of the pets were forced into competition. They all wanted to compete. Its not like the pound where their life is in danger. They lived with Fluttershy. They all wanted to compete and could (and some did) quit at any time.

Considering how there's never really an explanation for the source of Twilight's balloon, she just has it (and doesn't even use it to arrive in Ponyville for the first time, like in the intro), and how they shoehorned a train into the S2 intro, it's no surprise.

I'm watching the episode right now and the lack of ferrets is disturbing.
Rainbow Dash is bottom tier confirmed and as much as it hurts to say, Fluttershy has moved to bottom rung as well.
Speed - Try and catch a ferret that doesn't want to be caught
Agility - They're ferrets
Guts - Again... they're ferrets
Style - A war dance is always stylish
Coolness - By default they have a mask on their face
Awesomeness - Again! Ferret! Watch one explore for half an hour and you know how awesome they are
Radicalness - In my experience ferrets do the most radical things. They don't even require a hat or sunglasses to do it. They just are.
In short: Fuck you RD and fuck you Fluttershy for excluding the awesomeness that is ferret. I know you excluded them because you knew that it would be an unfair competition.

The ferrets were too busy feasting on the rotting carcasses of the poor fish which fluttershy murdered for them so that they may be the fat, pretentious dicks they usually are.
