Croteam's P: "the success of Skyrim & SS3 on PC show there's a market willing to pay"

http://gamingfeeder.net/2011/11/croteam-on-piracy-people-will-pay-for-awesome/

Serious Sam 3: BFE is apparently doing quite well on Steam, with Croteam boasting on Twitter that “people will pay for awesome.” According to the studio CFO Fork Parker, SS3 “combats piracy by being a fun, frantic game and offers wild ass 16-player campaign co-op.”

Sensing an opportunity, I contacted Mr. Parker to get some extended thoughts on the piracy issue.

“Piracy is a problem and there is no denying that but the success of games like Skyrim and our own Serious Sam 3 on PC illustrates that there is clearly a market willing to pay for PC games he said. “It’s on the developers and publishers to put something out on the market that’s worth paying for in the first place. Those that place the blame on the consumer need to rethink the quality of their products and the frequency in which they shovel out derivative titles each year."

“The other side of the equation is the distribution model. In games, we have amazing PC digital download services like Steam, Get Games and Direct2Drive doing the same thing for games that iTunes did for music. Offer the consumer a variety of great digital content at a reasonable price and the majority will happily pay for the games that suit their tastes.”

Poor Ubi :(

I'd like to believe that but a more established publisher told me different! Dirty pirates killed our hobby dead.

Glad to hear it's doing Croteam well. Having trouble thinking of many better first person shooter campaigns this generation.

Serious Sam is the shit and Croteam is the shit so it gladdens my heart to hear SS3 is doing good.

Was your hobby doing a piss poor job of porting console games to PC?

No my hobby was playing every console game that gets properly ported in true 1080p and at 60fps always and forever plus play some of the most addictive and complex strategy games every created plus play every FPS as it was meant to played if not by the creators then by God himself. All while modding them to be even more specifically tailored to my exact tastes.

DAMN THESE PIRATES!

First Person roleplaying game and a First Person shooter.

Yes, Croteam: You're proving Ubisoft wrong.

Not that they aren't right in a sense when it comes to treating the consumer poorly and efforts, but I'd love to see sales of non-RTS/MMO/First Person viewpoint titles.

Small Euro Dev from Croatia puts hard work, time and effort, and what little money they have into a great exclusive PC version if their Flagship title(coming to consoles later) with only Steam DRM.

I hope Croteam can at least make their money back on this game, they deserve it.

Just so. *nod agreeably*

weren't the piracy effects confirmed to be kinda not that strong on pc gaming sales?

I think anyone with common sense knows that while pc game piracy is insane in terms of sheer numbers, they are pretty much never lost sales as those people are never going to spend money on games regardless

Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 weren't exactly bad sellers on PC and they were a Third Person RPG and a Third Person Shooter RPG respectively.

What's left then? Train sims? I've been led to believe those sell too.

With this and the GoG thread being made today, I believe angular graphics is nothing but an elaborate troll of the console community on GAF, not to mention an advocate of piracy if it leads to future sales, and should be banned immediately.

I'm on to you, son.

I wonder if SS3 sales are in their expectations of being good, or being good at the godawful time they chose to release the game.

Nice to see that Serious Sam 3 is selling well. There were some glowing impressions in the OT. I might even buy it at full price instead of waiting for a sale!

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
Don't forget Football Manager.

Ok, so PC games don't sell unless if they are FPS/RPG/RTS/Management Sims/Indie Games/Given a push on Steam.

There you are TheSeks and others, PC games don't sell, UbiSoft are right and PC gaming is dead, piracy killed it, or something.

My game is $4.99 on Steam (currently $2.49 on sale). Honestly, is it worth the effort of pirating and hacks and possible hilarious things I could do to you if I detect a pirated version, when you can literally click three buttons and own the game on Steam?

To my knowledge, there isn't even a pirated copy of Sequence up on the torrent websites.

Of course, I'm indie, and larger games will be pirated, but all this nonsense that PC gamers aren't willing to pay is such bullshit.

I you were able to make piracy completely impossible then some of those pirates would pay.

I just found Sequence, complete with crack, in no time flat. Just saying.

Man, I guess I'm not searching the right torrenting websites?

Whatever. Ain't no skin off my back. Game's doing really well; the Autumn sale was great.

Good to hear! I use my consoles (all 3) for exclusives, and the 360 for BF3 online with mates. Everything else is PC; it's cheaper and the games are better performing and looking. Why wouldn't I play on PC?

And I haven't pirated a game since I was about 14 years old.

How have sales been going for you, Feep. Better than expected? Do they compare favorably to the Xbox Indies release. Not expecting you to divulge any exact figures.

I don't know about that. They may be pirates but many of them still love to play games. I know two people who resorted to buying the new Football Manager off Steam because it took so long to crack.

I really hope you are screwing with anybody you detect is playing pirated versions. Replacing all their music with rickrolls, for instance.

Total War are some of my favorite games ever, and they are only on the PC. They keep making them so they must be selling well.

Oh God, no disrespect to Serious Sam, but I read "SS3" as System Shock 3 and nearly needed to change my underwear.
I have already given up hope of SS3 so my eye twitches a little but my heart already knows it is not to be. :(

Also if Croteam are happy then it is a good indication of how healthy PC development is at the moment considering their size and output over the last ten year.
