Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2011 (Nov 28 - Dec 04)

While Zelda: Skyward Swords sales are very disappointing. There surely might be a couple of reasons for this. But I do not feel like discussing them. Eitherway, it was a loss for Nintendo.

But people are bringing up a weird analogy about "Zelda has always sold better outside of Japan" or "Metroid has always sold better outside of Japan", even a "Mario has always sold better outside of Japan". I hope people understand that the only comparison in sales we ever get are.

Japan vs America vs Europe

America has more than double the Japanese population. And Europe is an entire continent. OF COURSE INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED IPs are going to sell more in higher populations!

Well but we must to consider also absolute values.
Metroid did 1-2 million worldwide, with just 100k from Japan.
Zelda is used to make 5-6 million worldwide, with 600-700k in Japan.
Mario 2D sells 25-27 million worldwide, with 5-6 million in Japan.

But cumulative world wide sales is literally a giant platform. You can not expect Japan to hold up 50 percent of the sales ratio. America, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Europe, and others equal giant consumer base much bigger than Japan.

Super Smash Brothers Melee for Gamecube had over 50% attach rate. I'm not sure if it is the highest ever though.
Over 83%, to be specific, and I do believe it's the highest ever. (It was released ten weeks after Gamecube launch.)

Gamecube LTD the week before: 299,412

Smash Bros launch sales: 357,101
Gamecube LTD with Smash launch: 428,789

So it was that high. I just checked quickly and wasnt exactly sure how much it was, but i saw that it was over 50% by quick head calculation, so i just wrote "over 50%" :)

Shame about Skyward Sword. No more too late in the gen Zeldas.

3DS is on fire and will continue to rise. (Almost) all is well.

They don't actually count every game sold... you know that right? It's all estimates calculated with a formula based on the sample of stores they do track.

No, I get that. I just assumed that export companies in Japan (which supply games to companies like NCSX, Play Asia, etc.) aren't calculated into weekly sales charts.

Will it beat week 51?

No, it will do well though.

lol @ zelda

Maybe Nintendo will actually listen to fans next time.

Not if it sells millions and millions WW, Japan isnt enough to doom Zelda, its the games smallest territory. It can fall a few 100k less than TP and still sell millions in the EU+NA markets, and Nintendo will take the cake and continue not 'listening' to anything you have to say.

Gundam EXVS did pretty well.

Really interested to see how FFXIII-2 will do... especially after reports of 1 million units for the initial shipment on the PS3 version.
