Tales of Graces f English Trailer | Dated for March 13, 2012 in North America

Graces can be finished between 30 and 40 hours - took me about 35 IIRC. The F chapter adds about 10 hours, supposedly, but I haven't played it yet.

That 10 hours is an exaggeration sadly. It takes less than 5 hours to beat it.

I don't think Graces story is boring. Duckroll just hates Tales games and finds excuses to stop playing them even when he's having fun!

Graces story is good because it doesn't try to be anything beyond generic and simple. It doesn't think it's smart and doesn't shove it in your face. It's not like most Tales games where you groan and smack your forehead.

That sounds terrible to me. Anything is better than generic :(

Lol, that's exactly what's wrong with the narrative of the game.

Honestly everything that Graces f does is very simple and very underdeveloped, except its battle system and the mechanics revolving around it. It's a great game to play but presentation-wise and narrative-wise it fails.

I'll take generic over painfully awful, just keep it straight and to the point. Or execute it well, but that's obvious.

As I said before, boring is the worst thing something can be for me. I want something that's REALLY out there. I mean Chrono Cross has my favorite story in gaming and that's far from generic. Dragon Quest stories on the other hand are painfully boring to me despite some people showering them with praise precisely for being generic.

I guess I WOULD take generic over something like Star Ocean 4, but getting down to that level is impressive in its own right.

The ending is actually very good, if only because it does something that you normally wouldn't expect. Still, the story is more boring than say Abyss but a lot less stupid because at least the characters aren't written like assholes.

It's going to be hard to go back to Graces whenever I get the US release. I much prefer Xillia's combat now and the story in that is actually good for the most part.

True, most of the time "bad" is just boring with a few exasperating moments, but that was special. Still, there's a lot of other areas a game can compensate in for a boring story beyond gameplay itself, such as art direction, music, or just creating a certain feel. I do agree that I'd rather have a more out there story, though I stopped depending on that too much about when I played Xenosaga 2. And I have to admit boring with loads of drawn out cutscenes and piles of dialogue is one of the worst things that can happen without being outright awful, at least have the self awareness that you're not telling us a good story, let alone a special one, and let us get back to the game.

EDIT: Then again, I may be a hypocrite because I stopped Last Remnant once I was paralyzed with the realization the story was so utterly irrelevant that what WAS the point to playing more? Not that it stopped me in some other games, guess it's just something about being an RPG played post the 10 hour mark.

I definitely enjoyed the ending of the 1st arc. The future arc's ending was alright. The only character interaction that I truly enjoyed was between
Lambda and Asbel
The differing views and perspectives of these two characters really made Graces special for me. Honestly, if it wasn't for the ending, I would've said that this was the absolute worst story for a JRPG i've played this generation.

This will be my first Tales game. My only real complaint about what I've seen are the character designs. They don't really appeal to me.

Other than that it looks like a solid JRPG judging from impressions, so I cant afford to miss it out!

Story is fine IMO, the big thing with this game is gameplay. The battle system is amazing, and the title system is just really, really addictive. Does a really good job of giving that constant drip-feed of progress and making you want to continue playing/growing your charas throughout the 40 or 50 hours it takes to finish.

What about exploration and dungeons?

Otoh, there simply isn't much to it. The world is tiny (3 cities), and the plot is one note (go do ___ from city to city). There's a little more to it, but there are hardly any twists in the game and it's not particular long or epic in scope. It's a simple rpg about a bunch of characters going around the world saving it, the end. But it's accompanied by the most fun and best battle system in the series, good dungeons, and fun gameplay sub-systems. The game is fun to play and the story is enough to simply give you a reason to keep moving forward in your world travel until the ending.

The story isn't memorable, but it's not obnoxious. It's fine. The cast is entertaining enough to make it a pleasant journey.

That sounds good to me. Just give me a little bit of context to the gameplay, leave the technobabble, predictable twists and pretentiousness behind and I'll be happy.

I would say that it feels more like Symphonia or Abyss dungeon-wise, rather than Vesperia. I don't know if that makes sense to you or not.
As long as it's not like Legendia. I actually liked what I played more than I expected, but the long boring dungeons made me quit while I was ahead.

Why can't they release thee Wii version as well? :( They have the translation and everything done, it cant be that hard.

I'm sad I'll never get to play this game.

Because it was a disaster! (sry about the source, but it was the fastest I could google)

Okay, that is a reason. Weird I never heard of that before.

Well then, enjoy this game everyone :(

Actually , namco has a way to fix those issues while localizing ..just like abyss PS2 has fixes ( or symphonia 2 wii ).. they often correct buges and fixes broken things during localisation so the wii version might have been doable IF there wasn't a F version around .. F version is the fixed version of the game..so we should be happy that we get the fixed and extended version

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Hmmm... So I can get all the trophies in one gamerun right? I heard you have to play it in easy mode to get the "hardest" trophies (1 min to kill a boss).

..... That's it?

Not even little Villages here and there!!!!

3 cities? i'm pretty sure there was hometown, city1, city2, ancient city, ancient city2, tropical city, icy town, tropical port, tropical town.

i completed every inn request for the title, and if there were only 3 towns it would have been much easier to get.

Oh.... I feel so much better now :D

Can't wait to listen to White Wishes every time I play the game Like i did with Karma in TotA :p

I wish if ToGf was releasing in Jan.31 and FFXIII-2 was releasing in March.13 :-(

The wait is killing me ;_;

I think at one point Namco made the excuse that Graces f couldn't fit on a DVD since it was on a Blu-Ray. When fans pointed out the data partition of f would fit a DVD-9 (IIRC it was like 6GB and considering that includes HD FMV?...) Namco went silent. The cynic in me says the PS3 version brings higher revenue and given Wii is a Ghost town for JRPGs outside of VC and Nintendo published xx% Tales of fans will buy on PS3 anyway there is perceived to be little sales or monetary benefit to releasing the Wii version.

As for the whole Japanese Wii release was more like Tales of DisGraces. I thought even in Japan the initial buggy release was fixed.

If only the Playstation 3 existed...
You offering to buy CoolS a PS3?

god I play the Tales games but it's increasingly hard not to slit my writs with their pathetically one dimensional themes of friendship, HOPE, spirit of freedom and whatever.

LET'S PLEDGE TO BE FRIENDS! IF WE WORK TOGETHER, WE CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING!

This is seriously worst thematic direction than a fucking episode of Sid the Science Kid.

The writing in the trailer alone was so awful that it set the written word back to pre-Sumarian times.

I can't explain why, but even though the writing is the same in the JP version it somehow is a lot more bearable.

Perhapy my mind has grown to accept such content in Japanese form? The English trailer made me cringe.

---

I did like the JP game quite a bit. The combat system was a blast. Now enjoying Xillia's too, but that one is still inferior to the one in Graces F, albeit only slightly. I also agree with the sentiments of "rather a well done generic plot than a badly done "innovative" one".

They did fix it. Took 'em a few months, but they ended up re-releasing the game with some major bug fixes, and offered to replace the originals.

Don't know if it still had bugs or not though. I never got around to playing it.

I think I can handle some Friendship Cliche themes in the game.... maybe I will even enjoy it!

Hell I've missed the Japanese cliches in this generation so much ;_;

JRPG cliches <3

Hey man, don't knock Legendia too hard. It has its problems (story was bad, design choices were stupid), but I thought it was ok... mostly because Senel's artes were pretty cool. Jude's feels like a speedier take on them. Battle system was boring at times, but the artes were fantastic.

Hmmm... So I can get all the trophies in one gamerun right? I heard you have to play it in easy mode to get the "hardest" trophies (1 min to kill a boss).
Yes, it's entirely possible to do this in one playthrough (though you'd have an easier time with two since you have access to the grade shop). It's gonna take you a while though. Remember how I said getting through Graces took me a while, more than a standard playthrough? It's because I was trophy-hunting in one playthrough... and the battle system and ability system are highly, highly addictive.

You don't have to play the bosses on easy to get the 1 minute kill trophies, but they're certainly way easier on Easy because the bosses will have less HP and you'll do more damage (because playing on harder difficulties gives you more XP and SP). Honestly, I just beat them for the trophy on an easier difficulty to get the trophy, reloaded, and then beat them on whatever the highest difficulty I had at that point (usually Chaos; I feel like I get way more out of the battle system on the higher difficulty since enemy HP is higher forcing you to combo and link artes as much as possible). You get higher XP/SP multipliers for beating enemies on higher difficulties, so it's best to treat bosses that way.

Now if they keep the accessory duplication glitch in the English version, then getting the trophies on one single playthrough will be dramatically easier because you'll have aaaaalllllll the money in the world to level up shops' inventory (meaning you get higher-level weapons and armour faster). Lemme tell you, it's hilariously fun on a second playthrough.

Guys, the strength of Tales games made by symphonic team is the tight and funny interaction among playable characters that brought life to otherwise generic character A with some weird name. In that sense, it's very well developed and entertaining.

Yeah. There were three major countries but there were definitely more than 3 towns to visit. More like 10 or something.

It did according to the wikis. Not half as many, but they still left bugs in the fixed version.

Yeah, it's three countries, not three cities. There are plenty of towns. (And technically there's more than just the three countries, too, but let's steer clear of spoiler territory.) ;p

I really liked Vesperia, but playing Abyss a few weeks ago for the first time really turned down my hype for this game. Its pacing was so terribly off (run to City A for two lines of useless dialogue -> run to City B for more useless dialogue -> revisit Dungeon X for no reason at all, not even a boss fight -> rinse and repeat, arrrrrgh). I hope Graces isn't as bad about this, as I really -want- to like those Tales games.

Graces isn't really like that.
I also think it's important for people to realize that it is a game by a Tales team that they most likely haven't been exposed to. Don't go into this expecting Vesperia or Abyss or Symphonia because it's different.

I've heard many impressions/reviews (mostly yours!) stating that the battles are indeed very different, but not much comparison to Abyss/Vesperia for customization, pacing, etc.

From what people are saying though, I'm guessing the story has much less techno-babble ranting. I like myself a good sci-fi plot, but Tales always get that part really, really wrong.

Funny, I always thought Abyss was pretty good for pacing. Though admittedly the first part isn't quite as interesting as the second and third.

I'm quite interested to properly play a team destiny game. Never played one before due to the lack of european releases.

Do we really want them to go down that route though? I mean Vesperia's demo was horrible yet that game was awesome.

Also, there's technically already one up on the Japanese PSN Store.

Yeah, I played that. I would like it in English though.

Speaking of which, how does the visuals hold up? All the footage I've seen just reeks of a simple upres. Is there a visual difference from playing this on ps3 vs dolphin emulator?
