Skullgirls- New Characters, Painwheel and Valentine, Announced [Full Roster Revealed]

Maybe, I don't know what you look like, but I was the Justin that played in the tournament. My friend also played, his name was Raymond, but he's not a GAFer.

I was able to catch the stream. I think the game had an excellent showing. You could tell most were rather new to the game but the potential really shined through. Kudos to whoever decided to put Fanatiq on commentary. Not only was he HILARIOUS, but I think it does the game much more good to have people hear positive comments from a respected independent member of the FGC as opposed to a company employee.

I also really liked what I saw of the GT material. Good stuff. I've heard people say Valentine will be around tomorrow. Is this on stream or material that will be recorded and put online quickly?

Also, one more question on stages. Have we seen all the ones that will be at launch or are there still more waiting to be revealed/saved for launch and if the later how many? Left side of Maplecrest and Training Stage still look a bit off but I can't articulate exactly how to make them better, sorry :(
Yeah, Fanatiq was the absolute best guy to put on the stream considering the number of people who were going to be viewing the game. It was an amazing stream and it blows out it's previous showings on WNF cleanly.

Also, the GT videos were great. Painwheel is a lot scarier than I thought...
After seeing that stream- my opinion on Skullgirls is pretty much confirmed.

Buying, but not for the gameplay. The art is gorgeous, best I've seen in any 2d fighter. Gameplay seems like Darkstalkers with Marvel assists and Arc characters, it's a combination that can work, but just isn't my style of game. Maybe it will win me over eventually the way Blazblue did, I'll definitely give it a chance, I'm just expecting to be terrible at it.
I was starting to feel like a madman because no one else could feel the Darkstalkers vibe in here. The overall theme of the world(strange but kooky world with a dark underbelly), some of the characters, several Mahvel 2 mechanics and the general flow of the game makes me feel like this is the spiritual successor to Mahvel 2 AND Vampire Savior. Cut Mahvel 2's maximum height by half, lower the combos to 30 hits max, throw in some MvC2 mechanics like snapbacks/easier pushblock/teams and you've got Vampire in there.

You are like the second guy who wants the game because of the art over gameplay though. :P
1.) This is exactly how Skullgirls feels to me, like Vampire Savior meets Marvel. The comparison to Arc characters is less true for me, but I see where you're coming from (it's probably just that I was never able to get into Blazblue).
Some characters do have guilty gear inspirations in how they play or what palettes they have, but most inspiration seems to be all over the place. Mike Z has some crazy insane inspiration lists for three or four characters(Valentine, Painwheel and Parasoul off the bat IIRC).

If he got any inspiration from BlazBlue it probably lies in it's featureset more than mechanics or characters.
does anyone else think the art deco style looks completely out of place in a fighting game?
About as weird as a sexy fish prince, flying old men who wear capes or jazz themed versus games.
maybe it's just because the character art clashes with the art deco theme of the backgrouds/gui. it almost looks like they considered using two different art styles and ended up using them both.
Ah, you mean that the styles clash. This is completely different from "fighting games". I suppose you could say so, but that depends entirely on how the story mode is done and how much of the canopy kingdom we get to see. They might fit a lot better than we think once the game is released. Hell, the story is important enough to affect the order in which characters might be released so it could really tie the game together.

I should know, I was originally dismissive of the game as a cheesecake fan-service project, but after they showed off Peacock I started paying attention to the promotional videos about the actual fighting engine
This is me, practically word for word. Looks like all I need to do now is actually play the thing.

One of Alex's big inspirations is Batman: The Animated Series, and sort of by way of that it was the animation studio's inspiration, Big O.

One of his biggest inspirations for the characters are the artists who did the characters for Batman: The Animated series, too.

...So did you think those characters clashed with their environments? Obviously their styles are different, but there are a lot of curvy, big-eyed ladies in that cartoon.

He wrote a blog post about all of it a while back... which I would post, except I seem to have just discovered that Skullgirls.com is down.

EDIT: Bad timing on my part - just happened to check while the webmaster was adding our loc'ed versions of the site.

Nah I've thought this game was very reminiscent of Darkstalkers for a while now too and I'm pretty sure I've said so before. Oddly enough, aesthetically, Darkstalkers is probably the best thing Capcom has ever done IMO but I don't think I've ever played a game in that series. Are the requirements for GGPO really intensive? My computer is only two years old yet it feels like its been dying recently. I dunno if my computer could handle it but I've got some free time coming up soon and I'm kind of curious all of a sudden.

I'm actually pretty hype for the story mode for this game and I'm really hoping they pull it off well. I know "lulz fighting games and story lulz" but its pretty clear that Alex has thought this through and planned the story rather far in advance.

Regarding Valentine, does she have a command teleport and/or wall cling? Can't have a ninja sans a teleport. (Well I mean you could but I want one :P)

Even more Skullgirls casuals and tournament footage which might be updated again.

Valentine footage:

Credit goes to the folks at SRK for compiling this stuff so quick. Anyone who is curious can head to the Skullgirls forum over there. I'm especially fond of the palette thread. There are dozens of new great colors from all kinds of media over there on top of older fan made palettes and they kick serious ass.

I run Darkstalkers perfectly fine on my 3+ year old laptop that definitely feels dated. I play dozens of matches weekly (probably have 400+ since I started in August) with regulars who kick my ass and we get our occasional newcomers too.

You could totally run this game like a dream and setup takes five minutes. I've never messed with the ports on my router and it took less than ten minutes. Folks are pretty helpful there to boot.

I'm not like other guys who complain about no story modes and crap on BlazBlue styled efforts. I'll give it a try and acknowledge it even if it is not my cup of tea. I have a feeling that it will be fantastic though. Magical girls, beast people, twisted experimental subjects, princesses, gangs, parasitic creatures, walking destruction(Skullgirls) and everyday folks... what's not to like?

You can see for yourself.

I just realized that for as much as I was supposed to be following all the updates, I haven't been doing a good job after seeing SP's gif of Valentine's intro animation. That being said, holy shit this character is so mained. :lol

Was great meeting you, and glad you had a good time - looking forward to seeing and hearing what you guys do with the game when it's out.

And do you know a guy on SRK named Negaduck? He's another Fresno-area guy, I think - he came down to our office to play, be on FNF, etc.

And I think Dacidbro's going to be tapped for FNF this week, too - apparently got some good replays of his Painwheel against Mike.

Oh, saw a tweet from the Skullgirls staff about your friends, said he was owed some prize money- might want to let him know.

I got an e-mail from At my Limit tonight, actually, so we're all good.

BTW are you guys going to be at Final Round, if the game isn't released by then?

Hoping to at least try it once before it comes out, and I'll need a 3rd game to play anyways.

yeah, sometimes, especially the female characters, in particular baby doll.

babydoll-kidicarus222.jpg

even as cartoony as baby doll is, I think all the skullgirls characters are way more cartoony so the clashing feeling is bigger there.

btw, nice blog post. I like that he has FLCL there too. although I haven't seen much influence in what little I've seen of the game.

yeah, Negaduck is one of the fresno guys....he's been hyping the game up too. haha

but it was awesome meeting you! i'm definitely gonna be buying a shirt! I was hoping you guys were gonna have them there but I found the store online so it's all good.

I would pay so much to be able to get that valentine stick! that was the most godlike thing ever!

Ah, cool - Negaduck seems like a great guy, and it was cool having him down here.

...Also, hold off on buying a shirt for now. We're going to launch a new store with a much-expanded selection in the first weeks of January. You'll even be able to customize your own stuff.

I second the motion that you should sell sticks, or work with someone to sell sticks.

Those sticks looked awesome.

MadCatz approached us a while back, but basically they couldn't get enough retailer orders to move forward.

We're currently investigating things with another manufacturer... it's definitely something we want to do.

Just wanted to drop in and say that the game looked really cool. I wanted to play, but to say I am a scrub would be far too kind, and it looked like most of the people playing knew what they were doing.

I will definitely be picking it up once the game gets released, though. The online community will need at least one dedicated punching bag...

Props for the Hitchhiker's Guide nod on the 42 hit combo tag. 11 being "King" kinda irks me though since in a deck of cards a king counts as 13. "Jacked" or "Ace" might be better since an ace can count as 11 in a game of blackjack. I'm assuming that it was in reference to playing cards anyway.

I was also amused by "Can I have a cheeseburger?" and "OMnomnomnomnom"

:Edit:

Oh King is a reference to Killer Instinct apparently, never mind then.

Nice - who is playing in that?

And did you get to play with Valentine or Painwheel at all, Haunts?

I think it was Mike playing.. Ill ask Max whats up..

I didnt get to play at all, the stations were taken up all weekend and I was being a KOF monster anyway. :)

Max says we got some awesome Valentine and Painwheel content coming up though so Ill post that soon as it's live.

word!

One thought on something in the Painwheel combo vid: That "go to HELL!" Install super is SO QUIET compared to what's going on, on screen. Is that going to change, or is that the final take on it?

This big open mouth, and there's not even a muffled scream... all this energy exploding being her, yet the only "energy" sound we here is one of the "activation" flash. Making the screen / camera shake or jitter a bit would also add something to it. As much as the animation tries to make me feel "this moment is an EXCLIMATION POINT!", everything else about it just made me kinda go "oh... yay."

I was suprised at the person in the youtube ccomments that mentioned not liking the "everything freezes" moments of hitstun behind her blows... I wish there was more, personally. Some nice looking stuff in there, though, overall...

I was wondering this myself. It feels like the violence of the character is not being expressed well enough in speech or sound effects.

Don't feel bad about it. I follow this game too closely for my own good....
Awesome

IPW vids are always so damn clean. I hope you guys continue to net those exclusives. I have one question though. Could someone add the name of the game to the description under the video or something? There is no mention of the name in the video or on the youtube page itself(not even tags, surprisingly).
Those Painwheel combos are the shit

Also, I know someone at SRK is gonna be happy with that Valentine palette.
Duckie is besides himself with joy lol.
dis game gun have balance patches?
Yes, but it won't be frequent since Mike is a tournament player who understands the need for games to breathe. They'll also be updating the game with stuff like DLC characters, stages(accompanying music of course) and features like HD uploads after release.

dis game gun have balance patches?

We plan to have free updates, and that will include balance patches if necessary.

Mike believes in letting things marinate a bit to see if the community evolves and comes up with a new tactic to counter it, though - he's against kneejerk patching.

Please tell Mike thank you for the stance he's taken on this. These are the types of ideas that help a game become what it can truly be.

*cough cough*VANILLA SENTINEL BEFORE NERF*cough cough*

There's the other side of the coin- the "nothing is broke" mentality of some folks is just as bad. There's letting a game breathe, then there's letting a game breathe toxic gas. If something is truly broke I expect it to be fixed.

I expect this game to have some balance issues at launch.

As a huge fan of Alex and Skullgirls's art style, can I ask if the game will feature some sort of story mode, possibly packed with tons of his artwork?

The website talks about 'single player modes', but I'd really love to see something like KoFXIII's Arcade and Story, with Alex' beautiful illustrations all over the place. :Q__ _

The latest Friday Night Fight went up... after I went to sleep! Good thing I randomly woke up?

Hmm, I guess I can talk about this a little.

There will be a story mode. It's all "non-canon" and is told with talking portraits and a lot of original illustrations.

The portraits and illustrations also feature a lot of characters beyond the eight playable characters, too...

Thank you mate, that's great and makes me very very happy. :)

Loved the animation of Painwheel's win pose. I just wish characters had more then one win pose (I know Filia does, but you said she's the only one right?)

Actually, we recently had to remove Filia's other win poses to get the game to fit into memory again. All the polish on the stages and UI was eating up a bunch, and we needed to cut some non-essential animations for the time-being to get it to fit again.

We have plans on how to work around that, though. If they work out, we hope to add more intros, taunts and other flourishes with updates.

I did see that .99 out there, does this mean submission to PSN/XBLA is really close? I'm wondering if you're going to beat out SCV- hoping you do so I have some time with the game before FR.
