There's like zero chance of a CD of all the ending songs beyond the one for the first half, is there?
You need to lurk the animu thread more:

Comes out next Wednesday!

Not as good as Utena's ending (what could be) but still really enjoyable.

Totally expected a
reset ending
and was pleasantly surprised.

Utena's ending was a lot more straightforward than this. lol

Not that I am hating on Penguindrum. I think the show ended up being greater than the sum of all its parts. I am gonna miss the Takakuras.

I have no idea what happened... it doesn't make sense... but the damn music got me! I couldn't believe it. THE FREAKING MUSIC MADE MY EYES TEARY! What Himari was saying in the last few minutes... then the message on the teddy bear... the little brothers... AND THE FREAKING MUSIC! :_(

I really love the Children of Fate theme, I can't say that enough.

Now... someone explain me what happened? D:

They used the
Penguin Drum to save Himari's life, turning themselves into children in the process.
At some point during all of that,
Ringo used the fate transfer spell, and Shoma grabbed on, meaning that they all transferred together
.

So the net result was
Ringo and Himari are healed (though Himari has a scar from the uhh...glass, I guess
and
Shoma and Kanba are either brothers, or friends, or something, and they're children. They are in a different "fate" (dimension, or whatever you want to call it) as well, along with Ringo and Himari. Tabuki and Yuri are the only ones that got left behind.

Oh, and
Momoka was freed from her "curse" status.
Sanetoshi is
stuck as a curse, and without Momoka to help the next people...I guess he can do whatever he wants?

Christmas saved, Ikuhara in my mouth, etc.

(I need a movie. I need it bad.)

As much as I like the show, the more I look back at it the more I think it's less than the sum of its parts. For one, there are major problems with pacing. Why did we have eight consecutive episodes of Ringo development, only for her to end up disappearing into the background and doing a lot of nothing for the second half of the show? How come the major theme that the ending is based around wasn't explored until the last 10 or so episodes? Couldn't there have been more than a few hints here and there that Himari is more than a Mary Sue, perhaps exploring her cheeky and dominant side that was touched upon? Why did they bother with the Masako backstory episode, which was hilarious but completely unnecessary and irrelevant to the main thrust of the series? Why was it placed towards the end, at a point when the show really needed more development of Ringo, Himari, or perhaps Tabuki and Yuri? Their secret motivations were teased at a lot, but ended up being pretty unsatisfying in the scheme of things. There were also a bunch of surreal, intense scenes teasing at a mystery involving Masako and the League of Kanba's Disgruntled Ex-Girlfriends, but that turned out to be a huge red herring that lead nowhere. What about the Antarctic research expedition? And what about Mario and the split soul in hats? Totally irrelevant. Also, the show is way too reliant on false cliffhangers. There's a real 'shit just got real' feeling when Shoma is hit by a car, or the audience is lead to believe that Ringo will be raped, but these scenarios resolve themselves instantly, and totally unsatisfyingly, when we return to them. It turned out to be the plot just spinning its wheels, afraid to change up the status quo. The repetitive deaths and revivals of Himari exemplify this writing tendency best.

There's A LOT of padding and excess plot threads in this show. Part of me wishes that Ikuhara had made two 12 episode series instead: one being a straight comedy about a crazy girl and a weak willed boy going on surreal adventures, and the other a magical realist piece about the ties of family. The series is almost neatly split that way anyway, and at least each series would have more cohesion.

But despite all my griping, the show remains brilliant on an episode by episode basis.

They left a lot of stuff on the cutting room floor, in terms of plot points. We never figure out what the
child broiler
is, why the Takakura parents
become involved in Sanetoshi's scheme
or how they
died; We only saw the father's corpse, and never the mothers as well. What happened?
. How was the
Natsume clan
involved in everything? They made them up to be potential villains, and then nothing ever really came of it. Hell, Mario-san got
possessed for a single episode
and then it was never mentioned again.

The last second plot introduction of
Shoma and Kanba having met in the child broiler
was probably the most egregious thing to me. It's as if it exists only to explain
the existence of their personal Penguindrum.
It doesn't make any sense, because we definitely hear from Kenzan that a single male child was born to his wife, so....where did that
kid go, if it's not Shoma or Kanba?
. Also....what the hell are the
penguins?

So many loose ends... I need some breakfast.

(This was easily my favorite show in years, despite the issues)

I'd forgotten about the Natsume clan. What was up with that?
I didn't mind
Shoma and Kanba in the child broiler
, because it's a symbolic thing anyway.
They were alone, and then they became loved through meeting each other, which saved them from becoming 'invisible'.
It fit with the message about about the importance of family and a sense of belonging.
If Himari and Shoma went through it when they
became part of the one family unit, why couldn't Shoma and Kanba?
Besides that I agree, both on the loose plot threads and the show being one of the best in a good while despite them all.

That music reminded me of the persona games velvet room theme

Tell you one thing I was expecting...

The terrorists to be the children from the Child Broiler.

Little things like that could have really brought the narrative together. If the
Penguin's are kids that didn't get saved from the broiler
then why not have
the members of Pingroup/Kiga be the kids that got saved? They'd certainly feel a debt to the people that saved them, so it would make sense

-The reveal of the PenguinDrum was pretty halfassed. Even if the apple represented kindness, it still makes no sense chronologically; Kanba always had two loving siblings and if it was after they were separated Shouma already had Himari as adopted sister. Why was the Kanba's kindness so relevant? Why was it split in 2? How did it become a magical ball of light able to bring back dead people? How did Momoka know about it?
-Momoka and Sanetoshi remained glorified plot devices with really inane motivations. Who was Sanetoshi and why did he hate the world so much? How did he gain magical powers? Why was Momoka, a completely normal girl, granted a fate altering spell?
-If "LET US SHARE THE FRUIT OF FATE" was enough to change fate, what was the point of the diary?
-Yuri and Tabuki's actions in the first 18 episodes are absurd in retrospective. What were they trying to do, anyway?
-Masako's manipulation of Kanba's ex-girlfriends was as pointless as I said a few pages ago.
-What was the source of PingGroup's seemingly limitless resources?

Mawaru PenguinDrum needed more time in the oven for sure.

She was the first one saved.

She was the first one saved.
Good answer.
Still,
Shoma's love for Ringo
is a very important part of what happens in the final episode, so the show should not have abandoned her like that.
For the climax to have more power, she needed to play a more active role in the plot, rather than flattening into the typical anime female who's all too ready to sacrifice everything for the male protagonist. If Shoma saving Ringo was important, why didn't we delve into their relationship? Despite his leaping in front of a car, it was never very clear how much Shoma actually felt much for Ringo. They barely spent on-screen time together in the second half. The episode detailing Shoma saving Himari from the child broiler was very beautiful and got at the main theme as well as anything else in the show, but that relationship was tangential and much less relevant to the events in the climax. Why not develop Shoma and Ringo's relationship more instead, and make Kanba the one who saved Himari? That would have added some depth to Kanba's devotion to her, which is weirdly underdeveloped despite getting so much screen time. The possibility that both brothers had (romantically) loved Himari added nothing to the show.

the idea of a diminishing fruit of fate makes no sense thus making the whole thing nonsensical
making friends/family should be a growing apple not a dividing one

the idea of a diminishing fruit of fate makes no sense thus making the whole thing nonsensical
making friends/family should be a growing apple not a dividing one
Previously I thought on it more as an ill-fated fruit of life, than a fruit of fate 'per se';
Kanba and Shōma (later Himari) shared the fruit that made them united in the same fate, and later in the same afflicted punishment received only by means of Himari (the littlest of the "lambs"). Once Kanba's efforts to continue supporting the life (by his own one) of Himari were all futile (prolonging the curse), he tried to erase, or change, the world who struck that punishment towards them, in behalf of false promises. Only his redemption and the disappearance of all the traces left by him and Shōma on that world along with their shared curse could permit Himari regain a life and transfer her fate to commence anew. A poisoned fruit with the 'original sin' that only repentance can relieve.

Don't take this too seriously! This was my very rough first impression on it, but there is so much more intricate things to comment, and incorrect approximations made, that I don't know how to express myself correctly anymore. I'll probably need to refresh my memories of it!

It's about dividing the burden of fate as a way to include someone into one's inner circle. Think of dividing the apple as sharing the load.

Reading now some of the transcriptions of KOSSORI PENGUINDRUM can be quite amusing, with all the foreshadowing and hints. Additionally, we have (in part) to thank KING RECORDS (also known as PINGU RECORDS) for the sheer quantity and quality of covers and original music themes present in this series:

Lots of incredible BGM to come that has not yet been used. Some comment led to Ikuhara commenting that King Records needs to sell CDs, Koizumi replied "so that's King Records' survival strategy…"

And I think this needs to be here as well:

After 6 months, I've finally finish Mawaru GaijinDrum. It's a fun ride watching this show and thinking what to make for this but nonetheless I've finish it. Thank you GAF for inspiring me to do this. Mawaru GaijinDrum Final.

We should be the ones grateful for this... I love it, thank you Defuser!

does anyone know the name of the song used during the
fate transfer
in ep 24? or has it not been released yet?

Screw Children of Fate, THAT's the best song in the show

Dammit, I had a feeling there was no way this would warp up completely. So many unexplained things. Still it was very emotional though.

Posted some avatars over in the anime thread, here's some of the remaining ones:

Sorry for the bump, but I figured some people would be interested. The song finally has a name: The children of fruit and destiny

:D

Another vocal version got released as well (exactly what it plays in the last scene, if I remember correctly).
Farewell, The Sons of Destiny

Thanks. Some great tracks there. The soundtrack really did a lot to sell the emotional moments of this show for me.
