OK - I think the backgrounds have shaped up really well from the early prototypes. I was just curious if they were going to change again before release.
Any changes from here will be pretty minor.
BTW, there's one stage left to show, too...!

Villains: Valentine, Double, Bloody Marie, Black Dahlia, Eliza, Venus Lovelace, Brain Drain (M)Crocodile on SRK said:This topic is a bit all over the place. Also, do we have any proof that this T.J. Maximum or "Zombie Samurai" are actually in the Skullgirls universe?
Anyway, I think some sort of summary/update is needed for both people who have been here a while or are new. A fair bit of info has already been complied on the the Shoryuken Wiki. Most of the below is sourced from Alex's archives (Livejournal), Whiteboard Wednesdays and any storyline info I've seen the team post. When I present speculation, I try to be clear that I'm being speculative. I use "seem" and "appears" very often; I apologize but I feel it better to err a bit on the side of caution lest people take my word as gospel. As with anything, THINGS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. What we "know" now may change in the future behind closed doors. If there are any mistakes or concerns, please feel free to let me know, especially if you work at Reverge (*hint**hint*):
Protagonists: Filia, Cerebella, Peacok, Parasoul, Ms. Fortune, Painwheel, Umbrella, Squigly
The identity, motives and relationships of the first six are confirmed and can be found in the profiles on the official Skullgirls website. I don't think I need to spend much time talking about them. They will all be there at launch. All we know, or think we know, right now about Umbrella and Squigly (one of the coolest/best designs IMO) is on the Shoryuken Wiki. They have been described as early DLC characters. I stress that a lot of the info on the Wiki is speculation and may change between now and whenever the characters are officially made/revealed. Speculation has been made that Umbrella may have water/hydro based powers/abilities; this is nothing but conjecture right now but I hope it turns out true. Umbrella's design doesn't hype me very much but if she had water powers that would be super cool. Also a Morton Salt Girl palate seems like no brainer as well as a victory pose that emulates the aforementioned character (or is that too much?).
Queen NancyCrocodile on SRK said:Everyone on the above list except Black Dahlia is in the above picture. Valentine (bottom left), a Ninja Nurse, is of course the "Dragon" to the current Skullgirl, Bloody Marie (right of Valentine). More info on Valentine, a member of the launch roster, can be found on the Wiki or official website. What Marie wished for, her powers, motives, personality, etc. for are uncertain at this point. I'd be ecstatic if she had a condescending personality similar to that of Rachel from Blazblue just because it seems it would suit her well. "Time to take out the trash!" is super-cheesy but I feel it would sound super right coming out of her mouth. Here's to hoping.
How did Marie obtain the Skullheart? We know Nancy (the shadow near the top left of the above picture) was both Parasoul + Umbrella's mother, the previous queen of the Canopy Kingdom and the previous Skullgirl. My personal speculation is that Marie was a former maid to Nancy and once Nancy died/was defeated, she was in a prime position to obtain the Skullheart for herself. I spend so much time on Marie because I'm pretty confident she will be the eighth character. She is in the announcement trailer for the game, on the official website and has been referenced in Fan Art Fridays. Though characters we have always known won't make launch have been featured on Whiteboard Wednesday, only those playable or soon to be playable have been featured in FAF.
DoubleCrocodile on SRK said:Just above Marie, with the two mouths and "crown", is Double. This design differs DRASTICALLY from the one currently seen in the Wiki or the one posted in the second post of this topic. Her design has changed quite a bit over the years. It may have gone through another revision if the image attached below represents the latest iteration. Little is known about her personality, motives, etc. though it is believed that she also serves Marie. She has shapeshifting powers; she may conceptually have similarities to characters like Seth (SF4) and Twelve (SF3) but she certainly would be a full fledged and unique individual amongst the cast. The statue in the Cathedral stage seems to be modeled after her.
Black Dahlia in the gameCrocodile on SRK said:Black Dahlia is an assassin working for the Medici Mafia with an expertise in firearms. She killed Ms. Fortune and the Fishbone Gang. Clearly there would be a lot of beef between the two and I'm hoping to see her in story mode even if she isn't part of the launch roster. I'm ASSUMING that she is one of the three black (African descent) characters mentioned to be part of the current expanded (including all potential DLC or sequel characters) Skullgirls roster. I also ASSUMING she is the woman NPC shown next to the "boss" NPC at the top of the Medici Tower stage (see attached). I'm not sure what's the deal with the mask she's wearing.
Crocodile on SRK said:Eliza is the "Eqytian" woman in the center of the villain collage. Little else is currently known about her. She is referenced with a neon sign in the background of the top portion of the Medici Tower stage (References to Annie can also be seen amongst the signs). A sorceress perhaps? Former archeologist and/or someone with a Cleopatra complex?
Venus LovelaceCrocodile on SRK said:Venus Lovelace is the bespectacled woman in the top right of the villain collage. As described in the Wiki, she hosts the three "Ab-baddon" parasites which can emerge from the front and sides of her abdomen. She also has the power to bend space which allows her to contort and separate her body in weird, unusual ways. The gameplay potential seems endless (hype!). Her image can be seen in one of the stained glass windows in the Cathedral stage.
Brain DrainCrocodile on SRK said:Brain Drain ("robot" looking guy mid-right) is the partner in crime of Krang from TMNT er...um.....I mean....is the leader of Lab Zero, a secret component of the Anti-Skull Girls laboratory. Am I the only one who feels like this guy is straight out of TMNT? Anyway, he leads the less ethical components of ASG (I'm not sure Dr. Avairy and his creation of Peacock can be considered ethical so we were already starting on shaky ground....) and is responsible for the creation of Painwheel and probably other unimaginable horrors. With a name like Brain Drain, the fact that he has psychic powers comes as no surprise. Telepathy is nearly assured but I'm guessing telekinesis and other powers are also part of his repertoire. His psychic image can be seen in Painwheel's intro animation and he is in the background of Painwheel's action portrait. Valentine also has major beef with him; the reason why is currently unknown.
Annie of the starsCrocodile on SRK said:Supporting Characters: Annie, Deep Violet, Myrine, Feng, Ileum, Leduc (M), Panzerfaust (M), Beowulf (M), Big Band (M), "Purple-Haired Woman", "Triplets"
I put these down here because I have no idea as to their affiliation or overall importance in the storyline. Are they "good guys", "bad guys" or somewhere in between? Annie, "Girl of the Stars" as she is also known, is the star of a popular tv show which both Parasoul and Peacock seem to be big fans of. The exact contents of the program are currently unknown but one role it serves is as a PSA against the Skullgirl. Her real age is unknown. Although she looks like a kid/pre-teen, her parents actually used the Skullheart some number of years ago to keep her their little girl forever. Good intentions I'm sure but like so many wish stories, you gotta be careful what you wish for. So, like a vampire, she seems to be immortal and unaging but got "turned" a bit too soon. In addition to the sword she carries with her (real or a prop?) she also carries around a stuffed rabbit toy. Like almost every other thing in the Skullgirls universe, the toy actually has a parasite residing within; it must certainly be a formidable weapon/ally. A reference to her is seen in the background of the top of the Medici Tower stage as a neon sign.
Deep VioletCrocodile on SRK said:Deep Violet, or D. Violet, is a demon (?) by night but a teacher by day. In case you were unaware, D. Violet's secret identity is actually Mrs. Victoria, the woman in charge of the tutorials for the game and in the background of the Classroom/Training stage. Is her daytime personality a facade? Or is she a woman torn between the paths of virtue and vice, perhaps even completely unaware of her darker self? What might she play like? Who is she married to? These are questions that don't currently have answers.
MyrineCrocodile on SRK said:Within the world of Skullgirls is a race of giants known as the Gigans. Myrine is a teenaged member of the race. She's young but unsurprisingly, she towers over most of the cast. Unlike most other characters discussed in this LONG post, she hasn't been referenced even once since Reverge Labs set up shop and started doing Whiteboard Wednesdays so many months ago. Has she undergone an extensive redesign since her creation? Does she still exist? Only the developers know.
IleumCrocodile on SRK said:Feng is Cerebella's roomate. She is likely a performer in the Cirque des Cartes like Cerebella. Whether or not she shares Cerebella's ties to Medici family is unknown. The fact that she is mentioned in Cerebella's profile hopefully means she makes an appearance in the story mode and joins the cast soon thereafter as a playable character. Given her appearance and armaments, "Salamander", she probably has fire-based abilities in addition to mastery of the martial arts. It is unknown if "Salamander" is a living weapon similar to Vice-Versa, Krieg and Hungren but is likely. I will note that I'm not 100% sure of the source of the below image but it matches very closely with Alex's style and what we knew about her previously.
Big Band(names may not be final), Leduc and PanzerfaustCrocodile on SRK said:Ileum (not Illium as per the Wiki) is probably another product of the ASG Labs. For those who don't teach anatomy or are too lazy to hit up Google, the Ileum is the last portion of the small intestine. Disturbingly enough, that matches her visual appearance rather closely. She can be seen in the background of the ASG Labs stage, to the far right, huddled up with a bunch of children (see attached).
Purple haired woman/girlCrocodile on SRK said:Leduc, Panzerfaust, Beowulf and Big Band are all prominent male characters in the Skullgirls universe with a good chance at becoming playable characters. Good representative artwork of all except Beowulf can be found on the Wiki. Leduc is somewhat of a blonde pretty boy; the concept image on the Wiki gives him a very masculine form but the NPC sprite seen in the background of ASG Labs gives him a more feminine form. I'm hoping his playable form leans more towards the masculine than the effeminate. I believe his name is a somewhat obtuse reference to cattle-proding and restraint; this is further emphasized by the clamps at the end of his arms (on his older design seen in the Wiki at least). Another grappler perhaps? He is a product of the ASG Labs and may have some tie or relationship with Painwheel.
Panzerfaust appears to be a member of the Canopy Kingdom army. Is he a subordinate of Parasoul? Little is known about him aside that he's BIG, looks cool and crossed over from another IP Alex brainstormed, Vulcan Heel. Hopefully, Marin can also make the jump over. #Marin4skullgirls
I have yet to find any images of Beowulf so I have no idea what he looks like. I've heard him described a some sort of wrestler character with similarities to Kamina from Tegen Toppa Gurren Lagann. There is also speculation that he wields a steel chair called "The Pain" similar to Kanji Tatsumi from Persona 4: UMA and his chair weapon; this seems to fall perfectly inline with his wrestler persona.
Big Band is the large guy in the saxophone-esque getup. He can be seen in the left background of the ASG Labs stage behind Leduc and the "Purple-Haired Woman". It's hard to get a good, clean screen cap of him but he's pretty hard to miss if you just watch some videos. He has no arms so I'm guessing he attacks mainly using sound based powers. Also said to be of African descent. Allegedly his VA has already been picked out but that probably was a joke. An "epic sax guy" reference would be hilarious and has been previously implied. He seems pretty popular so I'm sure he'll show up as a playable character sooner rather than later.
Crocodile on SRK said:"Purple-Haired Woman" refers to the woman grouped together with Leduc and Big Band in the left background of the ASG Labs stage. We didn't know about her until she showed up as an NPC one day. We still don't know much about her but given her appearance and placement, she clearly has some relevance. Her legs appear to have thorns on them. Maybe she has plant related powers? The symbol on her forehead kind of looks like the nuclear symbol. Radiation powers? I admit, I'm grasping at straws. Finally, concerning the Triplets, I don't known anything more than what is on the Wiki. I'm not particularly hyped for them. They, like Myrine and Beowulf, have not been referenced even once on Whiteboard Wednesdays or in the backgrounds of the game.
KarenCrocodile from SRK said:Claire - Very little has been revealed to the public about this character; only one public image exists from a few years back. In the below image, she is seen being somewhat "buddy, buddy" with Venus so perhaps they are friends or associates. I would be skeptical as to whether or not this character still exists if it weren't for the fact that I'm pretty confident she is the same person near the center background of the New Meridian stage (also see attached). If so, she has undergone a redesign but you can still see traces of her origins. She doesn't look human. Maybe a fish person? With the number you see in backgrounds and the role they seem to play in the story, you would expect at least one mermaid/fish person character to make it onto the roster eventually.
Crocodile from SRK said:Karen - The only picture I've found for her is shown below. Some sort of pugilist chimera I'm supposing. No further reference on the whiteboards and no cameos on any revealed stage so far. If she still exists is anyone's guess.
Those guys have been putting in work.Frosty Faustings videos courtesy of SRK members.
I don't see much of a difference. One thing did stand out to me though. The post match menus are now art deco styled in gold color so the game must be closer to completion again. Is it just me, or do camera videos@30FPS look better than direct-feed videos @30FPS when it comes to animation?
I mean obviously direct feed 60FPS trumps everything, but for some reason I feel like more of that smoothness that makes watching 60FPS vids so good is retained in the camera vids.
Valentine looks pretty hype on rushdown, as well as that ultra-lame Peacock zoning. Loved the steamroller kill![]()
Yeah, that looks pretty sick. It reminds me of Peacock's explosive level 3.Alex just redid her smoke bomb to me more swirly and ninja-y and, yes, it's pretty awesome.
I found the style for NPCs weird at first, but it grew on me after a while. It adds a sort of dreamy quality(something like that at least). It sorta reminds me of braid's paintings... which I think I've already mentioned before. They're basically final now - there might be a few minor tweaks, but the stuff you're talking about are part of the style he's going for. He wants a very distinct, painterly style so that the characters read well against them.
Are for NPCs... Basically, the further characters get in the background, the more painterly they become - the fighting characters have strong black outlines, characters in the immediate background are a little fuzzier with lighter outlines, and they get less and less defined the further back they go.
Fun Fact: Her Ibuki styled aerial kick is triggered by Valentine hitting her knee with one of those little tendon hammers. You can see her using it multiple times in the IPW Valentine combo vid.Just finished watching some of the later Valentine videos and yup, I've found my second character. I knows 'em when I sees 'em!![]()
Any changes from here will be pretty minor.
BTW, there's one stage left to show, too...!
We're not done yet, but we're getting close - mostly tech stuff, bug-fixing and finalizing Valentine and the 8th character.
BTW, there's one stage left to show, too...!
NEW STAGE?! I can't tell you how much I love stages in my fighting games. Good stages can really improve my enhancement of a game. KOF13? Beautiful stages. MvC3? Fairly lackluster in comparison; SC5? Holy mother of sweet jesus.
Can you give us a status report on how "complete" Valentine is from the latest footage? Is all we're missing a few supers at this point?
I dig those kinds of stages. Muramasa:The demon blade has something similar below. It probably wouldn't fit the style of the game, but is there any chance we may see a stage similar to this one in the future:
?
Video quality is ultra high like Rav's old uploads[/IMG]
Will the game have trophies/achievements?
Valentine was originally planned to be a sub-boss, IIRC. They never said they wouldn't do playable versions of boss characters, either. The rest is left as an exercise to the reader. Was the game still going to have bosses at release? Wouldn't that technically mean it is launching with more than 8 fighters, as Mike Z didn't want to waste slots on non-playable characters?
I think this may answer your question:Was the game still going to have bosses at release? Wouldn't that technically mean it is launching with more than 8 fighters, as Mike Z didn't want to waste slots on non-playable characters?
Two of the original eight will be DLC, 2 of the bosses will take their place. I'm guessing the non-playable boss will be the blobish looking one that looks like it has something from all the main characters. Double I think her(its?) name is....So, as you can see, we've moved onto bosses.[Speaking about the Valentine reveal]
I'm going to confirm here and now that Squigly and Umbrella are not going to be in the core game, and both will be early DLC characters.
This wasn't an easy decision: the game's budget couldn't cover 10 characters, we needed bosses, and neither of these characters have a particularly prominent role in the first arc of the story. On top of that, Squigly's gameplay concept is pretty out there, and couldn't be accomplished with our existing tech.
I hope all the Squigly and Umbrella fans out there understand, and I think they'll be worth the wait.
All PSN/XBLA games require them, so yes.
We designed them around feedback from the community with regards to what people do and don't like in fighting games, and I think we came up with a pretty fun set.
The difference is honestly almost negligible in the sound and visuals department. It is probably just a trade off for the smaller size(older FNFs used to be 200-400MB on average, but they are 60MB on average now). I'm pretty pleased with them in the end so don't take this as me complaining or anything. I ALWAYS recommend the videos on gametrailers since they look great and run super smooth on a PC or laptop if someone chooses to download them.Huh? I upload all the videos, and they should all be at the same bitrate on GT's system, so I'm curious why you think there's a quality difference this week compared to others.
These definitely have some good moments. Miss Fortune's puns are so terrible in Match #1 that I can't help enjoying them. She'll probably get on people's nerves in story mode quickly. Match #2 is great from the gameplay standpoint. They go at each other real hard and there is lots of tension. Fillia's level three will be very useful as a match ending move when used as a DHC and Cerebella is probably going to be the best grappler this generation has to offer besides Clark(KOF).More official Skullgirls footage? Yes please!

I tend to forget about my glasses now and then so maybe it's just me putting out mixed signals. All I know is that my hard drive is very pleased by the smaller file size. I'll refrain from mentioning it again.
How many characters will the game have at release? PSN Release right?
IGN could learn a thing or two from themAnd I don't know how GT does it, to be honest - the 23 minute video started out as hundreds of gigs of videos, went to 14 gigs under minimal compression, and was delivered at 1.8. And then they were able to get it down to 200 from there, and keep pretty much all of the quality?

Who's making the SG OT?
Regardless of who does the OT, we all need to think of a catchy title.
It doesn't need to be improved. The quality is high enough as it is.Didn't want to seem like I was jumping on you - just curious if there was some major difference I wasn't seeing. I always want the quality to be as high as possible, so if you had any feedback that could help towards that end, I'd definitely want to hear it.

That gets my vote as well since it gets straight to the point.Yeah, Heroines is a good one

While not the best of titles(in my opinion), it did make me realize that we need to address that problem early in the OP in the most tasteful manner possible just to stop people from ruining the thread with discussions about it. Maybe Ravidrath can help with that?
