Shove all of that minus the whack dpad and bumpers into the gamecube controller shell and it would probably be one of the greatest controllers ever.Just a couple more changes:
How's that?

Looks alright but I think I can edit it a bit further to achieve perfection.

Gawd, yes. It's like the controller had sex with your hands when you held it. Even better: un-extinct the Wavebird (they are discontinued, right?)!
Going off topic here (as if there is one), but I was so angry with third party developers for not making games to take advantage of the controller’s strengths instead of trying to shoe horn PS2-controls for it. Both the Z-button and the L/R digital clicks where completely misused (or even ignored).
I don't think that The Last of Us is a great example of what kind of risks Nintendo should take with new IPs. I hope Nintendo stays away from taking risks in the areas which don't matter to gameplay. If they start a new IP I would hope it would be something mindbogglingly different from all their mascot driven IPs in terms of game design and not so much story.

You can't perfect perfection my friend. Someday every console in the future will use that controller combined with the PS3's dpad. It will be a glorious future. Mark my words. It's the one thing I'll really give MS this gen. They almost perfected the controller. Just change that dpad and it would be perfect.

I don't. A less successful Wii with fewer copies of Wii Sports out there wouldn't have solved the issue of the major third parties going full-steam on HD from 2005-ish on.AceBandage said:Really?
You don't think that WiiSports being basically the reason the Wii sold so well was a big part of the reason that third parties wouldn't support it?
It basically set the entire tone for the system by doing that.
If the audience was going to run away with Zelda or Excite Truck, they'd have sold more than 22 million GameCubes.AceBandage said:It fostered a certain type of audience that Nintendo then ran with, creating the userbase that the Wii now has.
Where as, had they run with say... Zelda or Excite Truck, the userbase probably would have been much more receptive to games like Red Steel.
YOU are ergonomic...?
see, i don't follow this - isn't this kinda what iwata said about the sloppy 3DS launch lineup, that he didn't wanna scare off devs? just cause they went in for wii sports doesnt mean all they wanted was on-rails shooters. i know the meme is making games for a nintendo system = competing with nintendo, but this logic is befuddling.

Rareware was great with kameo and the new banjo. Meh, Nintendo should get them back on their side.

Yeah, and after the launch, he said "Yeah, fuck that. We're not doing that again."
Nintendo is the one that sets the tone for their system.
Yes, WiiSports gave the Wii a huge boost and a giant userbase, but they don't need that now.
They need to use a completely different game that will foster a userbase that both long time gamers and the expanded audience will enjoy.
And, in fact, Nintendo is doing just that. They've said several times that they will put more focus on the former group, though not cater to them exclusively. They understand that they need both to keep a system healthy.
And I'm sorry, but packing in another WiiSports would just destroy that. Honestly, don't pack in anything. Just give the lineup some good games that can sell and they'll be fine.
Still the most ergonomic controller so far. Why did you abandon it Nintendo
I don't see why it has to be a "pack-in" in the traditional sense. Have a few mini-games like Chase Mii and Battle Mii preloaded onto the Wii U's flash drive, have a few vouchers to download games through the online store and - of course - have some demos available.
Bam, your console comes preloaded with neutral content AND pimps out your new online store. Two birds/One cup.

I don't think putting a Chase Mii or Battle Mii mini-game into the Wii U increases sales by any means. I think it would be better business to have downloadable demos, some pre-installed for the system. Additionally. I think Nintendo should include some games and apps like checkers, chess, pong, and solitaire (fun simple games you can play on the tablet while watching television).
As far as Chase Mii / Battle Mii flesh that out into a full retail product.
I always loved the Gamecubes button placement, but maybe I'm insane.

Nintendo has to consider that not everyone has internet.
They were more logical and had a hierarchy, which really was nice. Plus, the ones you used the most were also the bigger ones.
They redesigned the Wii to not be compatible with itThey didn't abandon it, they kept it around for almost 10 years.

A friend of mine actually works at Rare still.MS has already let go most of the staff.
They're basically just Kinect game makers now.

Not that he told me this but I think they're going back to form again soon.
Does anybody think this would be popular on Wii U: a Mii-based version of Animal Crossing that acts like Sony Home? Your friends could live in your town, you could earn extra money from playing games.
If it was free, and part of the firmware, it could be huge.
I don't use Sony Home, but I think the concept is good and could work if done right.
I say Mii-based to allow a proper Animal Crossing in the future (and maybe to force them to do something different with the series).
I know "free" and Nintendo don't usually go hand-in-hand.
Now, yes. 2006, no.The market has changed for everyone since the GameCube. The DS and the Wii have propelled Nintendo's franchises into the stratosphere and they can use those to push the system while still pleasing a very large audience of both "core" and "casual".
The point is, they don't need WiiSports to do this anymore. WiiSports is a crutch.

GC D pad sucks as much as 360's just so useless there but saying that the button lay out <3
nice mock up, however the controller is probably that size to provide the necessary space for hardware within. besides, its not even that big to begin with. forum goers seem to spout hyperbolic rage from their keyboards without reason
Nintendo said:New Controller: Approximately 5.3 inches high, 0.9 inches deep (not including buttons and other projections) and 9.0 inches long.

Besides these, I think much will be made of the tablet for drawing. More shit like Drawn to Life but taken to the next level. I certainly hope it's more than just coloring book stuff. Even drawing on Miis and whatnot has lots of potential. What was that hit game in Japan that dealt w/ fashion design? Point is, these things are perfect on the Utab, but if Nintendo decided to launch that peripheral to add a touch pad onto the Wii Remote, it would still be pretty playable since you'd be able to look at the tv screen to see what you were drawing.

Slide Pad isn't a perfect replacement for D-Pad. It is a good alternative but it makes precise or intense sections in side-scrollers pretty tricky.I have to agree that the GameCube is the most comfortable. Button placement isn't the best default setup but that's only if you are fighting game fan and that didn't apply much, and fighting game fans tend to buy specialized pads and sticks for their games of choice anyway.
I would love to see Nintendo ditch the D-Pad altogether. I had no issues with the slide pad on the 3DS. I didn't try a fighting game on the 3DS to really test out it's precision, and I'm sure SSFIV3D has command shortcuts.
If you can combine the analog stick with the functionality of an arcade stick's square-gate (or octagonal) you have a functional alternative that gives you both 3D control and functionality in 2D game's that could be potentially better than a D-Pad. Nintendo has done that with the ridges on their traditional analog sticks

For me no D-Pad ever beats the one on dual shock controllers. I wish all controllers had the same kind somehow.

That thought came to me as well while reading reports from CES. I don't think Nintendo is going to go that way, but I found it pretty intriguing. Battery life might be a problem though (no idea how much that screen will drain the battery).
