never left the stone age
I want it in the vein of the cancelled Kirby:
gamkirbycancelled530.jpg

That looks gorgeous. Nintendo is silly for not going with this artstyle for Kirby Wii D:

Edit:
Y'know, I wonder if Nintendo is going to be less ambitious next gen as the cost of these HD games rises.

If this were true, wouldn't their games become less ambitious for every gen? I doubt that development costs have been the same from NES era up to Wii :p

No doubt, from a game design and execution approach their one of my favorite this generation, even ever. But Nintendo has the same caliber of talent, more money, and more marketing resources. There's no real excuse why Nintendo EAD of all dev's couldn't make a platformer this way. Or maybe I should temper my standards for a studio/s built on the house of sublime platformers and except that making a Mario game with four distinct chars and level design that accomodates (alongside barebones online) is too hard... :\

What way did you want NSMB Wii to go exactly? It was an evolution from SMB3, nothing new - just new levels that were kinda hard. Still, much more people seemed to have enjoyed this title than Super Meat Boy.

Online is a tough question. Of course, we could blame Nintendo. But does it really work with a 2D platformer where timing is kind of important. Not even Rayman Origins has an online mode, does it?
If everyone had a great online connection, I would not see a problem, but that's just not the case. In a game such as Mario Kart this might not be too important, for a game such as NSMB Wii it is. This does not mean that I fully approve NSMB Wii and its lack of any online support. Nor do I personally need a direct WiiU sequel for this title.

Are the screens really THAT expensive?
I mean my 13" 1366x768 sub-notebook with ULV-Intel i5 and 4GB RAM was 300€ (EDIT: Sorry, I checked, it was 350€), ok without Touchscreen but I can't believe that it makes 120 bucks!
Unlike almost all consumer notebooks, the screens in most tablets don't suck. That doesn't come for free. Of course, I'm sure the Wii U controller's screen won't have this "problem".

That's uncalled for, considering Nintendo always uses Sharp IPS displays, not some cheap noname TN shit.

NSMB sells a lot. I can't not see it launching alongside Wii U.

Of course they're going to release a 2D Mario for the console, and it'll sell by the bucketload, but that doesn't mean it's the perfect launch game. Launch games need to show off the system, and the Wii was so successful because Wii Sports does just that. Nintendo need launch games that show off the controller and show off the graphical capabilities of the console. NSMB won't do either. It'll do great when it's released down the line, but they need something different for launch.

Also, I really wouldn't read too much into the NSMB Mii demo. It was clearly put together quickly to have something to show at E3. They're not just going to release the same game again with Miis tacked on. I don't know what they will do with it, but the multiplayer they added in NSMB was pretty damn good, so I'll trust them to think of something.

To be clear it wasn't about what I was expecting, just spitballing ideas that would be better than copy/pasted Mii's.

Mario - Traditional Mario controls, refined a bit with more emphasis on timing and control. Improved wall jump.

Luigi - A bit faster than Mario, less control due to speed, but due to that more flexible in the air.

Wario - Slower, bit floatier and has a really good double jump and weight. Can explode through the air a bit like Spelunky from SMB.

Waluigi - Can slide and is the slippery character, think Bit.Trip.Runner on crack but a bit faster and cooler.

Throw in power-ups (some char specific), leaderboards and replays, great level design, level editor and a great online mode and we truly have the next great Mario game. Nintendo can do this, it's just a question of will and motivation.

I don't think 5 levels were designed just to throw something quickly together.

I believe all DS, Wii and 3DS demoes shown off were made into games in some form. I hope the Miis idea is scrapped but the fact that they made 5 levels seems to indicate to me that it's very much in development right now and considering the fact that Nintendo has said Mario is in development for Wii U but that's a no brainer.

I wouldn't be shocked if those other Mii demoes shown at E3 along with some newer ones will be thrown in together as either a pack-in game or minigame compilation ala Wii Play.

I think for NSMB Wii U they should make it so the levels are vertically large. Like, you go down pipes, only instead of just going down, you actually have to play those sections on the controller while the TV basically swaps with what the controller normally shows.

FMSMB is Famicom Mini Super Mario Bros, the rereleased GBA classics version. The in-game sprite isn't as crappy looking as that.

Kinda sad that the shitty, squashed GBA port of SMB still outsold Galaxy and Galaxy 2. At least Mario 64 stayed ahead.

Just goes to show how much more Japan values 2D Mario.

It's in both markets. 2D Mario will always be more popular than any 3D mario, it seems. I seem to remember that NSMB Wii is way ahead of Galaxy 1 and 2 in the US.

Jesus, I just realized Sunshine isn't there. It didn't even break 1 Million in Japan?
That's too bad. In some ways, Sunshine is the best Mario game, but in others... it's the worst.

I really hope the next 3D Mario is more like Sunshine than Galaxy. I'd like to see more open worlds in a "real" world setting (well, as real as Mario got with Isle Dolfino). I also think the waterpack really made the platforming unique and fun. Seeing FLUDD return (or something like it) would be wonderful. Imagine fire and ice upgrades! Flame thrower (replacement for the fire flower that also doubles as a hot air balloon or something) or ice spray that creates new platforms (like Iceman from X-Men) would be interesting.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
And machine guns. Lots and lots of machine guns.

I adored Sunshine. In fact it could be my best 3D mario, but it's been a while and Galaxy was so good.

Super Mario Sunshine's "Secret" levels essentially paved the way for Mario Galaxy's entire design. In Sunshine, they were a compromise to the people that felt Super Mario 64 "betrayed" the original Mario design (whatever, I know) and laid the blueprint for basically every Mario Galaxy level (that being platforms strung out in space with a definite "end" star that serves like a flagpole).

Still a great game and doesn't deserve nearly the ire that it gets.

Doing something like Doki Doki for four player NSMB seems like a good idea at first, but in all honesty, none of the other characters are going to control as well as Mario. Even Luigi is annoying in SMG with his slippery controls. More challenge? I suppose but that doesn't make it fun. I've never bothered w/ getting all his stars. Plus w/ the advent of wall jumps, yoshi, and all the other acrobatics, the abilities of each of the 4 characters wouldn't make all that much of a difference.

Of course, it's just plain stupid for them to include two toads and no Peach. At first I thought they were planning something w/ the Super Princess Peach franchise, but that game can't even be found in stores anymore (I was looking to pick it up for my gf's niece. :/). Hopefully, in NSMBMii they at least take a cue from SMB2 (USA) and mix up the plot. It shouldn't make a damn bit of difference in a Mario game, but when it prevents Peach from being used as a player, it's pretty ridiculous.

I don't think 5 levels were designed just to throw something quickly together.

I thought those levels were ripped directly from the Wii game. Anyone have clarification on this? And yeah, it won't be the greatest graphical showcase, but I expect some cool effects and visual flare in spots.

Knowing Nintendo, 4 distinctly different characters was something they experimented on for NSMB Wii or in some completely different prototype, and decided it was not as good as what they came up with. And they probably made the right call. If their goal was to bring in new players, characters with slippery or sluggish controls would just add to the annoyance factor.

As for lack of online in that title, in my experience, unless you're someone I've been gaming w/ for years and we have an unspoken connection, you have to be in constant communication w/ the other players in order to succeed. In other words, they would have needed a voice chat solution much better than Wii Speak.

The only way online could benefit a game like NSMB would be leaderboards for time trials.
It's a party game in the sense that the partiers should be there with you.

NSMB DS did that and it was cute. I don't know if people would want the same thing except with a screen size reduction though.

Hey guys I haven't been following Wii U stuff for a while, has there been any word about Virtual Console purchases on the Wii transferring to the Wii U?

I can't imagine they'd let us transfer over our Wii VC purchases.

It would be awesome, but we don't really have an account attached to our purchases. So we'd potentially be able to put the games on an SD card and just share them with friends or something. Or am I missing something? Haven't purchases a VC game in a while...

It would be nice of them to at least put the entire VC catalog up day one, as opposed to rolling them out game by game, week by week.

It'd actually be really easy for them to do, they'd just have to make a "transfer channel," give you a code that's tied to your wii, and allow you to tie that to your Wii U account so you could redownload old VC/Wiiware games. If they could do it for dsiware, they can do it for VC/wiiware.

You can transfer eStore purchases from one 3DS to another, and from DSi to 3DS, so it's pretty much a given that the Wii and Wii-U will have the same ability.

It's the copy protected saves (For non-hacked Wii's) im concerned about, i don't want to put in 700+ hours again requiring all the stuff in MHTri.

That's gonna suck but I'm gonna cry when Capcom shuts the game servers down. Monster Hunter just isn't the same when you're playing alone.

Anyway, this is my prefered line-up (not nessesarily at launch) by team:

OH DEAR, here we go.... I made this mistake with the launch of the Wii, I will not make it again. Simply put, Nintendo's been leaving a LOT of choice development talent to languish for YEARS, and I don't expect that to change any time soon.

But just for giggles, I'm gonna point out the major problem spots and the biggest wasted potential in Nintendo's roster of designers:

NST: Project HAMMER (if only, it looked pretty cool IMO)

It's not just your opinion. Brawlers are awesome and I want to see them again, and this one actually looked like fun. I think the cancellation of Project HAMMER was when everyone saw the writing on the wall from Nintendo in terms of the final outcome of the Wii.

But the outcome isn't likely for a return to consoles for them right now. Which is too bad. I kinda liked what they did with Wave Race (douchey character design aside, anyways)

Monster Games: New realistic arcade racer IP ala Excite Truck, or just Excite Truck 2/Super Excite Truck (Bots isn't ET2), maybe even F-Zero

NO. DO NOT GIVE THEM F-ZERO. Don't give them ANYTHING.

Retro Studios: New IP or Star Fox

Jeez, Star Fox now too? At this rate, GAF wants Retro to be responsible for Nintendo's entire catalogue. But at least you picked a franchise in need of saving instead of the Skyward Sword "OMGBOMBA" reactive GAF wanting to wrench it out of EAD's hands.

But they are the wild card for next gen. They've spent a LOT of time shoring up talent, but no one is quite sure what for. If I were to hope, simply put, I want an Eternal Darkness sequel from them. Will it happen? Probably not, but of all the Nintendo talent to do it, they're the ones who could.

Next Level Games: Strikers 3, revival of another dormant IP ala Punch-Out, maybe a new IP, or how about for fellow Canadians; Super Mario Slapshot! XD

I may have heard incorrectly, but these guys (like most of the Vancouver development community) isn't doing so hot right now. Or at least I'd assume so, with so many in the programming and art fields being out of work. Most of the people I know in that field are moving to California where there's more work. Sad, really, cuz a lot of good gamestuffs come out of this city. I at one point toyed with the idea of opening a dev house myself in New Westminster with a friend of mine to give some of our friends jobs, but neither of us could get the financing for it.

Monolithsoft: New RPG IP (they are making a game for Wii U, so it's likely, WOOT!)

Glad to see Nintendo is FINALLY doing something substantial with these guys. I was worried that they'd be relegated to the DS forever after they were bought. Then they gave me Xenoblade. It only took.... how many years before this well was finally tapped?

Mistwalker: The Last Story 2 or a new RPG IP

Speaking of... considering that Microsoft is unlikely to want to touch them ever again, despite funding them outright, wouldn't it be hilarious if Nintendo BOUGHT Mistwalker? I'm sure Sakaguchi would love to have bunches upon bunches of different teams to sift through his creative visions one by one.

But seriously, never going to happen. We MAY get The Last Story 2, but it would have to include an HD remake of the first, for people who didn't bother to pick it up the first time.

Arzest: New mascot platformer IP, mayjor bonus points if Prope got on board with them for a Ohshima and Naka double whammy of platforming greatness!

No, see, THIS is the team to give Star Fox. Hands down. They're formed from Artoon folks (who know how to make a character shine, which...... yeah, hasn't happened in a while for this series) and former members of the Panzer Dragoon dev team. PANZER. FUCKING. DRAGOON. (as a side note, the Panzer Dragoon team can't catch a break.... first absorbed into Smilebit within Sega, then Smilebit is absorbed into Amusement Vision, then Sega totally restructures and fractures their teams, and most of them leave, meaning that the team essentially doesn't exist anymore.... same for the Jet Set Radio team. Sad.)
Stop screwing with this franchise, Nintendo, either develop Star Fox internally again or put it in their hands and give me a furry-tastic space opera with epic orchestral soundtrack and crazy-ass dogfight sequences. STAT.

As for your suggestion, I think the industry has enough "mascots" as it is, and Nintendo most assuredly does, so let's let them do what they do best: craft a nice and pleasant game.
Oh, and as for Prope? We can't really make claims on their "awesomeness" when we've seen practically nothing from them yet.

Noise Games: Custom Robo
LOLno. Let 'em try something new. The quality of Custom Robo has declined, you can tell their teams have fatigue and only keep making it because Nintendo can keep selling it and they could use the work. Let them do something new.

Ambrella: Hey U Pikachu 2 (the original was fun dammit!)

Do not suffer Ambrella to live. They are a bane on existence.

Genius Sonority (if they ever make console games again): New RPG IP (seemingly they were underway with just that on Wii, but it went kaput under wraps)

Talk about wasted talent. These guys are partly responsible for some of the best-selling RPGs in Japan's history (DQVI and VII) and they end up making Pokemon games?! If that's all you're going to use them for, Nintendo, let them go. If you won't do that, give them the freedom to make something totally AWESOME.

But will either of those things happen? No, probably not. Mind you, we've heard pretty much nothing from them and their website IS in maintenance now... hmmmm..... prepping for a hiring bonanza?

Brownie Brown (a stretch): New HD 2D RPG IP

Sorry, any hope of them doing something off portables is pretty much gone. I remember their rumored GameCube project all too well. It's been 10 years since they said they wanted to do a console game. My hope is lost. Ahhh well, they're an under-appreciated asset to Nintendo and would like to see them do something else that isn't a portable game, but.... ehhh, it's time to give up the ghost.

Sandlot: Zangeki 2 (damn awesome and gorgeous in concept that we never got to play, imagine that on Wii U)

Didn't most reviews comment that it was a very shallow experience? Not that I dislike arcade-y games, but.... I dunno, it feels like a one-off to me.

Paon: Glory of Heracles, or with Namco; Klonoa 2 HD!

Why, so Namco can send another Klonoa port to die?

Anyways, what I would like to see more than anything is for Nintendo to continue fostering developer goodwill and perhaps recruiting more studios into the fold. Monolith Soft was a HUGE surprise to GAF, but I think that their purchase of them was a reflection on Satoru Iwata's style of leadership. And I think we'll see more and stranger 2nd-party partnerships and acquisitions going forward.

But let's temper this with a bit of an understanding: in every console generation since the beginning of time, Nintendo has let certain franchises surge and others languish. The same is true for their development teams and partners, sadly, some of which never truly make it out the other side. And I expect this upcoming generation to be no different, despite people being of the assumption that Nintendo will magically begin using EVERY source of development to flood the console with content.

That i can deal with considering that there is bound to be a new MH out by then on a home console and hopefully there would be some sort of working online for Dolphin that MHTri can utilize.

Paying Super Mario 3D Land today, I'm wondering if they can make Mario games look any better outside of less angular edges. With this game and the Galaxy titles I really feel like the Mario art style has reached its logical conclusion in terms of technical graphics. I really do feel like Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 1080p with a little bit of AA is about as good as a Mario game ever needs to look. It might be nice to see some tessellation of Bowser's scales but that's all I can really think of.

What's with Eternal Darkness anyway? Denis Dyack said that the ownership of the IP is complicated but he talks as if Silicon Knights can make a sequel whenever it wants to.
