Los Angeles |OT| GAF's Guide to the Greatest City in the Universe

If you guys want to get adventurous, go to gravity hill in the foothills of Pasadena. I think.
There's a section of a slanted road going uphill passed a bridge.
Park your car on the side of the road. Turn off your engine and put it in neutral.
You think your car will slide downward?
Nope.
It'll slowly go upward.
And I'm talking about at least 25degree slope

Heh, my buddies and I used to get fucked up and drive over there back in my high school days. Shit was trippy.

Surprised no one's talked about Porto's in Glendale yet. Cheese rolls and tarts all day.

I prefer Five Guys if I have to choose a chain.

SGV checking in! Has anyone ever been to The Galley aka The Boat in San Gabriel? The Cheese Bread. DAT BREAD! The burgers and cabbage salad! Heaven. Raised on the stuff.

Since we're talking about SGV, head over to Stacked Sandwiches in Arcadia. Mega legit sandwiches over there.

In anycase Representing Los Feliz here. Place is amazing, the area is great, quiet and I have everything in an arms reach. Metro, bus, and not too far from most anywhere I drive. Also some of the best greek/pizza Ive found as well as italian.

If you want good italian go to Capriccios on Vermont, and El Greco pizza cafe makes a mean Gyro.

Used to live in los feliz between the ages of 12 and 14 them moved back to Florida. I loved LF at that age. Even went to Los Feliz elementary.

Moved to Glendale about two months ago, still getting used to being on west coast again. Thanks to you all for helping me compile a list. I must say I am impressed with LAGaf. You guys are awesome!

Now anyone know some more good burger joints as well?

Damn, I've hiked griffith many times, I guess I just never went high enough to the observatory. Apparently the old bat man caves are around there too.

Have you been to the abandoned zoo there? I'm going to shoot something there soon, whenever I figure out what it is I want to shoot.
The old zoo is much easier to get to than the caves.

K-Town (*siiigh*) checking in...Though hopefully soon I'll be around Mar Vista or Culver City, a bit closer to work.

I've been out here for 5 1/2 years now. I miss the Southern lushness, yards and porches, and driving for pleasure; but it's a fascinating, exciting, often infuriating, and pretty amazing city to live in. Here's to LA! (for now)

Valencia-GAF here... not sure for how much longer though. May soon be Thousand Oaks-GAF or Malibu-GAF if I find the right place.

I am a transplant, moved here just over 4 years ago. I lived in Atlanta for 8 years and grew up in South Florida.

Tepeyac ain't got shit on King Taco. Taste wise, come at me.

King Taco is over rated. Tacomiendo is where its at.

How is the area where USC is located?

Crappy but slowly improving thanks to gentrification and the downtown renovation. I graduated about 5 years ago before a lot of the changes took place and I didn't have a problem with the neighborhood.

i've been meaning to catch the lobster truck.

Tito's Tacos is good but overrated.

In n Out if the best fast food regular burger, IMO. Good shakes, too. I kind of like the fries.

Speaking of Grilled Cheese: The Foundry on Melrose has Chef Greenspan's award winning short rib grilled cheese. It's expensive but fucking great.

edit: Also the grilled cheese truck is good. Have to try buttermilk.

I live within walking distance of Tito's Tacos. I went once and I have no desire to go again. Waiting in line for a sub standard hard taco is criminal. There are so many better taco options in the area.

I say we have a Redondo Beach get-together. Then I could at least ride my bike to it.

I'm not a big fan of Redondo Beach aside from the actual beach area. The South Bay feels so inaccessible because of how removed from the 405 it is. I could possibly compromise on Hermosa Beach but if we were doing a West LA GAF meetup I'd rather go to Venice or Santa Monica.

What about that Tito's Tacos I used to see on late night TV constantly? Are they any good?

Dang catchy jingle. I'll give 'em that.
Tito's is a westside institution. Meat and cheese burrito plus a taco is my go to meal there.

My favorite place to buy uncooked Carne Asada for BBQs is Sanchez Meat Market on Inglewood just south of Culver in Culver City. Decent price for prepared meat, which is marinated in lime, pico de gallo seasoning, and green onions. Buy a couple pounds of that, tortillas, and queso fresco and you are ready to party.

How do you feel about Pinks? I've been there a couple times and wasn't really impressed. Yet every time I drive past it, there is a massive line.

Campus and immediate surrounding area, just fine. Beyond that, watch yourself.

Decent but not worth the wait or hassle to try and find a parking spot.

That place is virtually across the street from my apartment. I go there from time to time and do exactly what you've described.

Also their home made tamales are amazing.

Crap, now you guys know where I live.

Well shucks, I'm originally from Nashville too! I miss the music scene there.

My favorite city! Though a lot of that is due to nostalgia probably but damn the city is growing and growing.

Just rememberd. If anyone wants a nice whisky bar go to The Thirsty Crow in silverlake. They make amazing Old Fashioneds

A thousand times yes. For Valley substitution, try out Black Market across the street from Laurel Tavern.

I took mass trans for 3 years in a row from Ktown to Torrance. 6 buses. 6 GODDAMNED BUSES.

Now I'm 10 minutes from work and jog there.

Hey, we're neighbors! Grew up and lived in Torrance my whole life pretty much. Worked in SM for 9 years, currently on my last day at my job in the valley and happy my new gig is in the south bay back near home.

Hello LA(-area)-GAF! I like this thread; it's noisy, confusing, chaotic, but brimming with excitement, just like LA.

Let me give a shout-out to my home, Burbank, which will never have a top-10-ANYTHING with regards to fun or nightlife, but is a nice quiet place to live. And, with a car, much of the awesome stuff in and around LA is close (without traffic, heh heh heh):

-Griffith Park (one of the largest urban parks in the world): 10 min
-Hollywood Bowl (amazing outdoor concert venue): 10 min
-Hollywood & Highland (touristy shit + clubs): 15 min
-Alhambra/Monterey Park (dim sum, hot pot, etc.): 15 min
-Downtown (Disney Hall, capitalism): 15 min
-Dodger Stadium (there once was a professional baseball team here): 15 min
-3rd & Fairfax (Farmers' Market, Miracle Mile, museums): 20 min
-Beverly Hills (rich fuckers, some great restaurants): 25 min
-Santa Monica (beach, pier, boardwalk, shopping, restos): 25 min
-LAX (getting the fuck out of LA): 30 min

I honestly don't mind driving, because that's the only way to get anything close to a "full" experience of the place. I've been here nearly 10 years and I'm still discovering new facets. DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE ON TV!!! LA is MUCH more than that.

Or you could just Bob Hope. And do you really get to LAX in 30min (outside of speeding at 2am) from Burbank?? I find this hard to believe, you speedy demon you!

Ah yes, Bob Hope, I forgot! Fantastic alternative to LAX, although not as much for cross-country or international flights.

Yes, I timed myself going from my house to the gate curb to pick up family--30 minutes on the dot. Of course, this was Christmas morning, so perhaps traffic conditions were a little atypical ;)

Cool thread.

I live in Los Feliz and work in Santa Monica. Definitely be down for a bar meet-up one of these days.

This weekend I tried an awesome Philly cheesesteak, the best I've had in LA. It was at Boo's on Virgil and Fountain on the east side. Try it!

I live in the South Bay, Torrance specifically. I love me some El Burrito Jr. for Mexican, and Giuliano's for great subs, pizzas and Italian food in general. Busy Bee in San Pedro is pretty awesome as well, but I don't go to San Pedro often, it's like driving to an Island with only a few ways in or out.

Huh. Didn't know there was an LA thread.

So I was born here, my family moved out to Houston when I was 4. I've been back a few times. I'm now almost 23, and I'm visiting again. I still have a little over a week left... what must I do before I leave?

I've done the Hollywood thing, and I've been to a few restaurants and tourist attractions before (Rosco's, Pinks, Watts and others). What should I absolutely experience before I leave? I'll try to throw it in the schedule if it's possible. I'm in south central btw.

I miss LA. Last time I was out there was for my friends store's 1 year anniversary 3 or so years ago he opened up on Melrose Ave. Stayed with friends in Anaheim and I've been itching to go back ever since..
