NHL January |OT| Taking it outside, and other Winter Classic cliches

I'm pretty sure that rumor was pure nonsense.

I could see Crosby returning this year. The only symptoms he has right now are some minor motion issues. He's working out and skating consistently, I wouldn't be shocked if we hear that he's been cleared for practice within the next few weeks.
What's different about this time versus how they handled his progress from January-November?

Crosby was still getting headaches, having symptoms in September. He doesn't seem to be having nearly as many problems as before. He's having weird motion issues (light enough that he can still skate just fine, but he knows there is something off) and is travelling around to different doctors trying to find out what it is right now.

You know who else is feeling better but still having weird symptoms?

Marc Savard.

Feels bad, man. :(

Well the obvious fear is that he'll Savard himself, but if he's feeling fine and the doctors clear him, what do you do? Just sit around waiting for a non-existent date? Crosby only has two options, keep trying or retire.

I'm sure he will try at least once more, I'm just not sure he should. Savard was quoted last week saying he'd like to make a comeback if he can get healthy by next season. Shit is so fucked because not even the doctors have a grasp on what is actually going on in these guys heads. I wish him all the best.

Yeah I read that as well. Its scary stuff because he even tweeted that he was riding a bike last week and became light headed again. I love Savvy, hes one of my favorite Bruins but he needs to give it up.

They should just make him our power play coach.

was that not worthy of a suspension to you?

I'm not really sure, to be honest, after looking at it again. I didn't have a problem with the major being called, but in the video explanation it just seems like it's an example of boarding with no malicious intent, or injury. There's a lot of "discretion" in the punishment

while not truly malicious it was unneeded physical contact. I'm fine with them dishing out 3-5 game suspensions a piece for that. It's such a scary and dangerous thing to have that happen so to give strong suspensions to try and stop it is okay with me.

I believe recklessness factors into it too. Shanahan is trying to get players to understand that everyone's responsible for player safety. Just because you weren't intending the guy to get hurt on a bad play isn't enough. You just shouldn't be making bad plays like that, malicious intent or not.

I really like that Hiller has finally gotten his shit together, when he is hot is magical. Without a doubt one of my favorites in the league.
If you pick things apart like that, you're basically arguing that there are very, very few elite goaltenders in the NHL at any given moment since their statistics can fluctuate so wildly. Maybe we'd be better saying that what a team generally needs is an elite performance and you often don't know where that's going to come from. That said, obviously a GM would want to increase his chances of getting that elite performance by having a goalie that is reliably very good. Just maybe don't compromise your team's depth in order to get it.

I very much believe that there are quite a few elite goaltenders, i just meant that the teams winning often does it before they are really payed for being elite. Ofcourse you wan't an elite performance, but paying big money doesn't guarantee that even though it surely increases the chances for it, so i would say that it is really really rare that signing a goalie on a big big contract actually is worth it. Especially if you are an contending team and might be really good if you add some depth.

Basically you can't explain your signing of an elite goaltender with the fact that a lot of the teams winning a cup had an elite goaltender before they were considered(or payed for) being elite.

Not even, as a matter of fact, I think double are due because we didn't celebrate the Ottawa win either!

I bet the fourteen headline writers that NHL.com employs had that one in their back pocket for months, just waiting for the right moment. And now none of you appreciate its brilliance.

And the precedent has been set. Sky's the limit

are the ducks putting up complete games? I see they're winning, but do they look good while doing so?

with the talent on that team and now the secondary scoring is showing up, I can see that team being one of the better ones out there and maybe making a run for 8th!? is it insane to say? what do they need point wise to land an estimated 8th place spot in the playoffs?

If Ovi gets suspended, it will be the first time since 10/29/2005 that neither Ovi or Backstrom is in the #Caps lineup.

:(

At least Backstrom skated briefly today for the first time since January 6th.
