Tomb Raider roundup: Weather, mocap, feeding, dynamic camera, M-rating, Mac/No WiiU

Do these dumbass devs/publishers not realize that they could potentially sell a boat load of copies on Wii U if they just rendered in 1080p w/ AA? Look at all the people on the internet counting pixels between different ports, all the comparison videos between PS3/360 titles.

Who gives a shit if there's nothing to put on the tablet. Just display a logo on there and call it day. Then collect your free money. Idiots.

Give this man an exec position.

And that Wii U response comes just before the one saying "yeah, we almost have someone to port it to Mac".

FThem.

What I want to know is how much emphasis will the new TR place on large scale environments and huge, deadly puzzles? That is what Tomb Raider is all about to me, and I hope they don't completely ditch that model in favor of a more stream-lined one similar to the Uncharted games. Don't get me wrong, I love the Uncharted series, but I've always felt like Tomb Raider was valuable for almost completely different reasons.

Honestly, assuming there is some sort of map you pause to go to, they could just throw that on the tablet. You could do pinch zoom a la smart phones, and touch the screen to add way points. I doubt that would take much manpower/resources to accomplish.

I think Nintendo will not allow that. I believe it must have to use something on the tablet.
Hopefully we will find out more the point of the tablet on E3.

The pixel whores will go for PC version, duh!

Why did Crystal Dynamics decide on a Mature rating for Tomb Raider?

KS: “In the very early stages of concepting the reimagining of Tomb Raider it became evident that we were toning down the experiences that Lara would go through in order to fit in a T-rated game. It belittled the themes we felt so pivotal to delivering a new experience. We took some time and did some soul searching and decided that we had to move into the M-rated space. If we didn’t, the player would feel like the game was soft and light and that it wasn’t believable. It was a tough decision to make because there are many things to take into consideration including the age of our fans and the partners we can work with and even the times we can advertise our game. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but we believe we’ve made the right decision.” [Transcribed from Crystal Habit Podcast]

Did anybody else find this statement a little...off? I just played through Uncharted 3 and that game was never hurt by the the fact that it wasn't M-rated. Never once did I feel that it was "soft and light" and not "believable."

I find this to be an absolutely ridiculous statement by the developer.

Uncharted isn't a survival game. The vibe they're going for with Tomb Raider is more brutal so it makes sense why they'd go with the M rating. Uncharted is pulpy adventure fun, they aren't trying to make Drake break bones, or hunt for food, or deal with resources, etc. etc. I thought the answer made sense.

I'm glad Crystal Dynamics's new game, has "Dynamic Lighting," "Dynamic Shadows," "Dynamic Camera," and "Dynamic Traversal."

I hope all these dynamics don't just mean linear, but I am looking forward to this one.

PS "Dynamic Weather"

i don't. the two games are trying completely different things, and Crystal Dynamics are only talking about how a T rating would effect their own design for this specific game. they aren't saying that every T rated game is 'soft and light'. they're just saying a T rating would work against what they are trying to do.

they didn't feel that with their previous games, and thus aimed at the T market. trust me, they aren't knocking Uncharted 3 or anything else.

It's all sounding great. I love me some Tomb Raider. I recently replayed the original trilogy and even though it aged horribly, I remembered why I fell in love with the series.

I'm still a little afraid that when it comes down to the core elements (jumping, shooting etc.) this might still play like the old Tomb Raiders and I actually never really liked those.

the more recent Tomb Raiders play quite differently to the old ones. i enjoyed the platforming in Anniversary and Underworld quite a bit. the shooting... not so much. why did they always change how to pull off the super/slomo shot thing from game to game? i can never remember how i'm supposed to do it in each one.

Yeah I enjoyed the platforming in Underworld more so than the Uncharted(s) and games like Enslaved. It's more of a manual platforming.

The point of having the standard controls on the U-Pad was so they could get ports. Considering nintendo has already said that developers didn't have to use the 3d functionality or both screens on the 3ds if they did not want to, i doubt they'd place the same restrictions on developers/publishers for the Wii U. Nintendo just wants 3rd party support on the same level that ps3/360 got this time around.

The lack of a Wii U version would be more defensible if the game is shipping a couple months before Wii U launch, which might be the case... but still, not a good sign.

Enjoyed the read on the game, not so much on all of the whining about no WiiU version. We're going on generation 4 since Nintendo had third party support and still everyone apparently expects full third party support on a new Nintendo system.

Stop running into that wall and figure out that it hurts.

Crystal Dynamics had no problem shoe-horning in mechanics for the Wii version of Tomb Raider Anniversary and Underworld, so I dunno why it's such an impossible feat this time. Especially when you consider with the way the wiiu tablet is set up, you don't really need to do a WHOLE BUNCH to get the game working similarly to how the standard controls are done.

It's weird when Vigil Games, a studio with one game under their belts, can get Darksiders II up and running on WiiU, looking better than the 360/PS3 versions in mere weeks, but Crystal Dynamics seemingly can't.

I Agree! Yeah, you'd think after so many third parties bet against the Wii, and missed out HARD on that market early on, that 3rd parties would actually LEARN this time. You may want to start supporting things that have the potential to be big, instead of second-guessing it.

this is not a simulation game. You’re not going to be picking berries and drinking your own wee in order to survive

What?! No Bear Grylls moments, I'm out! No seriously, I'm pretty hyped for any new Tomb Raider as it's squarely my favorite franchise. The only real nagging concern I have is the QTE/contextual button prompts that appear so prominently in the early gameplay footage. Hopefully they can tone that down and let us actually play the game.

Also, isn't the game going to be using the same engine as Deus Ex HR? If so, hopefully they can optimize it a bit better for PC before it releases.

I'm sure the flood gates will open, but I'm pretty happy we haven been getting bombarded by new footage constantly. There is still an air of mystery about this game unlike so many others who basically reveal the entire game little by little before release. I'm looking at you Sony.

so all the people saying "No WiiU version? NO BUY!" don't have a PS3 or 360?

I'm guessing they are Wii-only gamers... but is such a thing even possible?

I agree. Im always thinking about this game and really want new footage but we are better off not seeing anything. The whole game will feel pretty fresh that way.

What type of numbers did Anniversary and Underworld put up on the Wii?

If they're making a PC version, they can make a WiiU. It's really their loss since they can hire out someone to do a quick port and even if it sells the least on the console, they would have invested very little in making it available. Not saying I'm for that since they should make an enhanced one, but they could do it.

God, not this again...

If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality.

You don't have to build it with unique functionality. You can have a splash image of Lara's braid on the screen the whole time for all most people would care.

I hope this isn't going to be the third party excuse going forward...

It shouldn't be up to Nintendo to court Eidos of all people. Eidos should be coming to them.

I disagree. Nintendo has had a very bad relationship with third party devs on consoles since the N64. You could actually go back before then when you take into account all the pushing around that Nintendo did. But the N64 era is really when third party devs started moving away from them. They should be doing everything that they can to get the same level of third party support that Sony and MS have for their consoles.

Probably poorly? But Underworld and Anniversary did underperform across all consoles.

They underperformed but they still put up decent numbers on the PS3 and 360. Why would they be rushing back to the a Nintendo console if their last two games tanked (if they did)?

This is totally true, and I agree with this. But the fact that the Wii came along, blew the fuck up hard, so many 3rd parties missed out on tons of potential sales in the first 3 years of the Wii's life, because they bet against Nintendo. (which was understandable at the time) Same thing with the DS.

Then the same thing happened with the 3DS - Nintendo basically let 3rd parties have the launch all to themselves, but so few put out any compelling content, so again, missed opportunity at launch.

So, I think with all these lessons learned, I would imagine ALOT more third parties should try to at least push as much launch content as they can - and now since the WiiU is on par or better than the PS3/360 tech wise, the reasoning for NOT putting stuff there at launch is wearing INCREDIBLY thin. As Crystal D demonstrated.

This is what I'll never understand about the gaming business. When the systems are matched and there is no exclusives, it's stupid to not develop for a company just because you don't like them. It should be a software makers goal to make the game available to as many consoles as possible- especially when the systems match up. I get that if the systems are too far apart performance wise it isn't economically possible, but i will never buy that it's not feasible for similar performing systems.

It doesn't matter if Nintendo courts them since Nintendo will always be profitable on the software side and they will always sell hardware for that software. It's like DVD studios hating particular TV brands.

It'll be toned down as the character progresses..

I still dont really get why the moaning is a big deal in the first place. Should a young and inexperienced human be quieter when they get impaled and chased through a cave by a crazy person.

It could also be that Nintendo demands from developers to include the Wii-U's unique functions. I mean it would be weird if one of the launch games doesn't make use of any of the Wii-U's features.

exactly.. I read this QA awhile ago, so I had to relocate where they did actually addressed this.. here it is:

Q: In regards to the E3 demo, will Lara continue to talk to herself and exclaim audibly throughout the duration of the game? How do you balance this self-narration with a sense of isolation?

A: KS: “When you try to reposition a brand and showcase a new vision, you have to go through a strong character arch. As we’ve stated, Lara is 21 years of age and straight out of college when she ends up in this situation. Just like anyone she is afraid and alone and most people would talk to themselves for hours on end just to keep their sanity.

“The goal as we move through the game is to see this huge character arc for Lara. Every day and every experience will make her stronger and make her closer to the Lara Croft we want her to be. So in the early stages you’ve seen her talking to herself or wincing or moaning, but won’t continue to the same degree. It’s a very serious thing for us, hitting that growth correctly. At the end of the game we want people to sit back and say ‘that’s Lara Croft.’”

Yeah, but I think Nintendo's learned by now what happens when they demand 3rd parties do anything...

They are not in a position regarding third-party relations to successfully "demand" much of anything of that ilk, and I'd think they'd know that. Incentivizing that sort of thing is one thing, requiring it another.

If they want to try to get a significant portion of the PS3/360 fanbase on board (an uphill battle, but something that Iwata et al's statements indicate that they are aiming for), they should be taking what they can get.

He contradicts himself when he talks about Lara's current situation in life. First he mentions that she's still only a college student; then he goes on to say that she's just out of college. She's 21, but which is it? Is she still studying or is she off to see the world and have adventures? It's probably irrelevant anyway, but that stood out to me for some reason.

I was in the minority of people last summer that was not impressed with their e3 trailer. However, it sounds like they're going for an Uncharted + (maybe) Snake Eater approach to the gameplay? It's almost certainly going to be a straightforward, linear experience with scripted setpieces and hundreds of enemies to kill, so I suppose I should curb my expectations accordingly.

I read this;

Will we see Tomb Raider on the Wii U or any other Nintendo Platform?

KS: “At this time no. When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform. Given that we’ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across. If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality.”

As, "Nah, if we were gonna put it on the Wii U we would have built it differently. Like with a different art style and mini-games. Possibly on rails. You know, something Nintendo gamers are more comfortable with."

Haha. I also idly wonder what specific platform they developed this for considering they're releasing it on three separate platforms (+1 possibly).

This is my biggest fear for the game. Tomb Raider style adventure/platformers are a dying breed and Im hoping that the reboot hangs onto that gameplay and maybe even breathes new life into it. If they go the Uncharted route, Ill be very disappointed regardless of how good it might end up being.
Im actually ok with a few set pieces here and there similar to what we saw in that trailer but the whole game better not be riddled with them.

The ability to fast travel and such gives me the impression that the world is going to be large, open, and non linear. I hope Im right.

Yeah, even Angel of Darkness, the grittiest entry in the series (lol) was rated T.

I'm glad they are staying in-engine for the cutscenes, hopefully they don't pre-record the stuff and keep it all real-time rendered.

Yeah, you've got to wonder where did all the apprehension to porting games come from? They were perfectly happy to make ps3 ports that did not take advantage of the sixaxis controller.
