Whelp, the journey is almost over. Time to enter the Chaos Temple and head toward the finale.

Current party:

Going to take a bit of a break since I'm a little drained after the sky fortress's relentless encounter rate, but I'll soldier toward the end soon.

I'm thinking of replaying FF7 or 9. FF7 mostly because an LP on SomethingAwful got me interested in going through the game again and FF9 because I never actually played through it a second time. But I have no idea how much the ATB-Queue in 9 will piss me off.

Or I could just keep going through XII International.

I'm still at work, but I've got the PSP ready to go with FF Origins and a plugin for screenshots.

The only question is, what party to go with. Aeana already went with the standard. :S

FF1 is complete. I was standing in front of Chaos at 3:53, and I assume the fight took me about 5 minutes? I dunno. I'll just call it 4 hours.

Alright, the tentative plan is to attempt a low level run with two fighters and two red mages. Normally, I would have thought hard about putting in a black belt in there, but then I remembered I could abuse the sliding puzzle game to get a ton of money, so loading up on tanks (read: fighters) seemed a wiser choice.

This will either be very aggravating, or very fun! Yay!

Has anyone ever completed IX quick enough to legitimately earn Excalibur II?

It's really easy on PS1/PS2 coz you can skip FMV's and even boost load times on PS2. I did it on PS3 psn ver (US) in 10:13 with lot of mistakes. Not sure if it is possible on PAL ver, very big difference because of 60Hz vs 50Hz refresh rate. Already noticable in the beginning, running to first moogle and saving is 1 min slower than NTSC.
I posted link to my PS3 Excalibur 2 run on 2 page of this thread.

I was going to play FF2 PSX, but Segata convinced me to play it on PSP since he says the added content is really good, and I've never bothered with the added stuff before. I can't promise I will this time, but I'll at least give it a look. I worry about the main game itself, though, because last time I played this version, the spells leveled too quickly and it actually really irritated me.

Woah. That was fast. Is it really that short, or are you just that good at it?

It's a combination of factors. FF1 is indeed pretty short if you know what you're doing, and I know the game very well. However, it's also because the PSP version is so ridiculously easy that you can pretty much just walk to each destination and beat it. I generally take about an hour longer with the PSX version.

It is orders of magnitude more advanced, solely by virtue of letting you attack specific monsters.

In Dragon Quest 2 and 3 (and who knows for how much longer; not me) the monsters will gang up on one guy, yet you can only attack groups. So you can't coordinate attacks, and it cuts off a lot of potential strategy. You learn to work with it, work around it...but Final Fantasy just left it in the dust by absolutely nailing the battle system. FF1 is like chess compared to DQ2+3's slots. If the cornerstone of your game is going to be battling, and you advertise it as a strategic sort of game in which you have to use your mind instead of reflexes, you need to give the player as much freedom as possible.

At least it wasn't like the first Dragon Quest, where they literally promised that on the back of the box even though the game has virtually no strategy involved.

I still like Dragon Quest though, but Final Fantasy was way ahead of the game at that time. Phantasy Star's battle system be damned as well; it's even worse.

I still haven't played FF2 yet... >__>

Also, full disclosure...I haven't yet beaten DQ3. I'm at the pyramid...The day/night system is awesome.

I understand about the grouped enemies thing. However, whips are useful for group control in the DQ series.

Still though, DQ3 had the better job system. Plus, you could actually change jobs.

I just replayed and beat FF9 last year, it was wonderful.

Finishing up my 2nd FF13 playthrough to prepare for 13-2 (i know its not necessary) while playing FF4: CC on my psp.

My list afterwards:
FF8 - started over the summer but stopped where im in FH
FF5 - played but stopped in the beginning
2,6,7,10 (might wait for vita release).

Ive beaten 12 and 1(psp) few years ago, but I dont mind playing them again.

This is going to be a great year.

Most people agree that Final Fantasy VI is the best one. Since these threads usually devolve into people ranking their favorites, we did a vote a couple years ago.

Semi-official GAF rank
  1. Final Fantasy 6
  2. Final Fantasy 7
    [*]Final Fantasy 9
  3. Final Fantasy 4
  4. Final Fantasy 10
  5. Final Fantasy 12
  6. Final Fantasy 5
  7. Final Fantasy 8
  8. Final Fantasy 11
  9. Final Fantasy 10-2
  10. Final Fantasy 13
  11. Final Fantasy 1
  12. Final Fantasy 3
  13. Final Fantasy 2

My fav FF. Top 3? Im happy.

I really recommend playing FF9!!

I really like X. The story was decent, the combat/leveling system was nice, and the minigame stuff was good too. Sure a proper overworld would have been nice, and some of the cut scenes were a little corny, but those were just minor issues (for me).

Any word if FFX HD will have online Blitzball? I'd be there in a heartbeat if that was the case.

I'm doing a thing where I'm going to play one FF each month. 1-12, with either 11 or X-2 (undecided there) doing a write-up of each one at the end of the month. I might not finish every game, but I hope to see enough of each to jog my memory about what was special and compare them to the rest.

Already finished FF1. Played the GBA version on a Micro.

I gave up on Valkyrie Profile 2 and started a game of FFVI. I'm playing the PSX FF anthology version in epsxe so I can take snaps.

I like the opening of this game so much. It definitely darker than the previous game in the series and Terra's theme is really amazing.

I'm at the point where I choose to input's Terra's name. Wondering if I should keep the default names or input my own. Any funny suggestions. I'll continue playing tonight later.

lol, I guess it helps to know these games. I just got to where you were in your last update (elfheim) and I'm at the 4+ hour mark and you're at the end in less time?
lol.

Enjoying it a lot though, glad I went with this to start off with rather than one of the more story heavy ones like I planned.

Man, I like FF2 so much now. It's funny since it used to be my least favorite, but now I think it might actually be one of my favorites.
I think it might have the best story in the series, too. Or at least one of the best.

Playing some Mystic Quest Legend right now (PAL version, hooray for borders!). I wanted to do a live stream, but the damn thing just won't work, so screenshot will have to do.

Man FF4 DS looks like ass. I'm so jelly of the awesome looking PSP version :(

Also, Cecil feels nerfed in this version. He's not hitting for a jillion damage while taking barely any. WHAT IS HAPPENING? I NEED MY BROKEN CECIL.

I wish the The Complete Collection would have gotten rid of the item limits :/

I love the clean sprite look though.

Well, you've just sold me on buying it then! It's about £4 on PSN at the moment and if it's that short I might as well give it a shot before FFXIII-2 next week as I've never played it...

Personally I thought the PSP FF IV remake is one of the shoddiest looking FF remake of them all. It has this really cheap RPG maker look to it that bugs the hell out of me. The absurdly easy difficulty pre-moon is pretty dumb as well. Nowadays I think the DS FF IV is the only one I can play now. Love the world redesigned in 3D and the high difficulty forces you to use every tool in your arsenal.

I have been playing FF II these last couple of days and am almost to the dreadnaught. I am enjoying myself, but the encounter rate is driving me nuts. The upgrade system is awesome though. Feels rather addictive and flexible in the same way that FF VIIIs was.
