Maxis planning to make a multi-platform AAA title.

I always thought SimCity should get a third person shooter spin-off. Seriously though, unless this is The Sims 4, and it seems a bit early for that, I can't imagine this being a success. How many AAA simulator titles are there these days?

How about a hybrid Sim City/Grand Theft Auto?

It's probably some more Spore crap.

Like anyone would buy anything in that line after the original and Darkspore.

Yep, Maxis handed off The Sims franchise to The Sims Studio (EA's internal team) shortly after The Sims 2 Bon Voyage. The Sims Studio has worked on the remaining Sims 2 expansions after Bon Voyage as well as been working on The Sims 3, Expansions, Stuff Packs, and the Sims Medieval spinoff. They have a team in which they're working on The Sims 4 - The Sims Studio consists of...350 employees or so and they often move them around within the studio.

Seeing as Spore and Darkspore were pretty much failures according to EA, I have a feeling (more of a hope) that Maxis is looking to return to their roots for a true and worthy SimCity sequel. SimCity Societies - the last game in the lineup (yuck!) was handled by Tilted Mills, and not Maxis, so we're loooonnnggg overdue for a new SimCity game.

I would personally love for them to go back to and revisit the SimMars idea. I was so bummed when they canned it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuGlgMq8ywo

Sim City 5 would be amazing. It's been way too long since the last real Sim City. I'm just worried it'll be plagued with micro-transactions. :(

I know Sims 4 would be slim, but I wouldn't mind that if it combined the best elements of Sims 2 (making your own neighborhood) with the best elements of Sims 3 (free roaming a neighborhood).

I hope that it's either Spore 2 or SimCity 5, with a PC focus.

Still, I hope there isn't disappointment, I hope Maxis hasn't changed much since Wright left the studio.

I love it when studios/journalists claim that an "AAA title" is being made. As if they know that the game will be praised that highly before they even finish making it.

I'm pretty sure that, as others have mentioned, AAA = budget.

Though, to be fair, if you have a huge budget for your game, it should be expected that the game you're making will be good and will sell well.

AAA refers to budget/production values, not rating. This has been standard use in the industry for a long time.

Maxis no longer develops Sims games. The franchise was handed to SimsStudio before 3..

It's worth noting that EA seems to have rebranded much of their casual division to "Maxis" in the same way many things are now "BioWare".

We'll be able to extra confirm that in May though when EA releases their 2012/Q1 2013 schedule.

Hoping it's SimCity, but I'm incredibly doubtful that they'll ever revisit that franchise.

SimMars would be sooooo good, but no way I can see that happening either. If SimCity isn't a niche market now, SimMars would have to be even more so of a narrow audience title.

Probably Spore related, or something equally as horrible, completely ignoring fans' pleas for the last 5+ years.

I doubt Maxis will ever work on that franchise again. If they do though, I hope they try and gather some of the original folk that worked on 1 and 2.

Just FYI, Maxis is located in Emeryville, which is right across the bay from EA's headquarters where The Sims Studio is located. When they moved the location where Sims was developed, the people moved with it. It's still the same team and the same people that have always been making Sims (not counting natural attrition obviously).

Isn't there one for the PC which converts your 2D SimCity 2000 level to a 3D one where you drive a car and shoot other cars like Interstate76?

Haha, Streets of Sim City was ahead of it's time. Good idea, bad game.

Can't imagine SC5 being a multiplatform game over a PC exclusive unless it's extremely cut down and simplified.

I guess it is possible, but AAA seems to indicate something accessible to the non simulation OCD crowd, but also has a big budget.

The safe bet seems to be Sims4, but It is also possible it will be a new Sim IP.
SimCity was big on consoles once.

There's really only one game that I want a more modern version of:

SimTower_Coverart.png

SEGA made The Tower GBA which pretty much is a port of it.

I want to see Theme Hospital return.

As for urbz the GBA one was the best, pretty good title.

Would also like a Sim City 5, but ditch the whole region idea from Sim City 4 and make it so the region is our city and the "cities" become suburbs.

Don´t really have enough confidence in either EA or Maxis now to feel excited about those news. Sure they own a lot of licences that were fun in the mid 90´s, but they aren´t exactly the same company today.

They do have Soren Johnson there, so he might come up with something good.
