Bought Beat Hazard. Cool game though it's also the first game I've played that uses "sticks"...and I've realized that touch screen gaming will never replace traditional controls. WTF...people actually like this?
Assuming it's like the other iCade stuff, it's basically a Bluetooth controller, but I think it works kind of funky. Like it does one key for a button down and a separate key for button up, rather than one key = one button. Technically it could work for emus, but they'd have to be made to work specifically with the iCade control setup. In the case of iOS games I think there's an API for it but no clue if they've done anything similar for Mac/Windows.takemymoney.jpeg
Would that work with PC/Mac as well? since it's Bluetooth? I would love a retro controller for emu's.
I grabbed it and loved it. I didn't much care for the tilt controls though; I disabled them.
I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than Trials HD on 360, which I cannot stand the physics of. I just hope more levels come out for this game soon.
It's one of the few iOS games I have reviewed, and I reviewed it specifically so I could say that 'It's awesome, but needs more levels.' Hopefully some come out.
It looks good, but I will wait for it to hit $.99 again.
Hypership Out of Control is currently free:

These Robotic Hearts of Mine is also currently free, normally $1.99

It's a puzzle game with pixel graphics and a small story going on. Complete each puzzle gives you a bit more of the story. Sort of experimental and some of the puzzles get hard.
Well, if new levels = new version, then they need to bang one out, because I'll not wait for a sale and buy it at release. It seems like levels = a new edition though. And yeah, it's rough around the edges and it needs basic features like telling you what levels you could do better on - but hey, can't argue with the great gameplay. They nailed the physics. It's like the Trials I loved before Trials became popular (360 version).
Also: Anyone ever try/hear of Roads of Rome? It looks interesting and is $.99.
BTW are there any other games that utilize the iTunes Library other than Beat Hazard?
Can't believe Audiosurf is still not out on iOS. It was out on the Zune market ffs.
If you have a Japanese iTunes account Konami came out with a free one: beat gather. Wish Harmonix (or whoever owns the rights now) would make a new version of Phase.BTW are there any other games that utilize the iTunes Library other than Beat Hazard?

Either the author has enough money, or Microsoft bought his exclusivity.

I know there's others out there but I completely forget their names.

Thank you kind sir. Free is awesome. Where did you find out that they were free?
Just blew through that robotic hearts game. Pretty cool. Some of the levels get hard, but you get infinite turns, so it's not like you won't eventually beat it. The story was simple, but great, with the perfect ending. It's free, so everyone should grab it. Even if you don't want to play the puzzle part, you can zip through the story (which is pretty short) by skipping the levels.
Cool find.
Tried the single stick mode? A bit annoying not having full control over your shot...but it might be less annoying than having to control your shot.I can't get into beat hazard at all, and I'm pretty sure it's because I just suck at twin stick shooters. I sucked at Geo Wars, and that was with real sticks... Beat Hazard is just embarrassing for me.
Picked this up when it was on sale as well and just started playing it tonight.Just finished Another World for the first time after the recent sale, and man that was a good time. There were some frustrating parts, but for the most part it was enjoyable throughout. I really dig how the story was told without any exposition. Worked well on iOS too

Challenge accepted!....
...challenge beaten!
UniWar finally got the HD upgrade.
Anything notable coming out this week aside from League of Evil 2?

Replace, no. Suppliment, yes. They take practice to get used to but once you do they are more than acceptable provided the right implimentation (screen placement, stick size etc). I don't have a 360 controller in my pocket on the bus, so in thsoe cases touch controls do indeed replace physical.
I was debating a reply that implied that 'hardcore' gamers could adjust to any old control set whereas 'casual' gamers couldn't.
I then decided that I might create a black-troll. It's like a troll but it sucks in all the matter from around it and turns discussions into shit across the whole net. Dangerous stuff.

Sort of off topic but is there a technical reason why more games don't implement iCloud saving? I would've thought by now *most* games would have added iCloud saving via an update but out of the 100+ games I have only a handful have that feature. Surely if it is as easy as I think it is to add it, they would've done so by now?

iCloud support is only easily doable (or at least testable) if you explicitly compile for iOS 5. If you want to support previous iOS versions and support iCloud with the same compilate, you have to jump through some hoops (albeit unproblematic ones, once you read up on it basically, check for classes and methods via reflection). And you have to get an entitlement. And you probably want to go with key-value storage, which limits space and needs a bit of additional thought as opposed to a good ol' save file. You might have to handle version conflicts and do other weird junk otherwise.
You can read about implementing iCloud support on developer.apple.com (even without being a developer).
Anyway, it probably takes more than 2 hours to implement. It's a new thing. So naturally, lots of developers don't want to thoughtlessly touch it. They certainly should read up on it though!
As for games that came out before iOS 5, the developers probably don't see why they should continually support new features if there's basically no revenue to be generated from the effort.

Hasn't this always been the case? If you change region of your account you loose past region purchases unless you got iTunes "backups".
Add: I'm in the same boat so to speak, moved my iTunes account from France to Ireland 3 years back and all my French purchases no longer show up. But I can install and update those apps via iTunes as I still have the apps there (at the same time iTunes on my phone wants to buy the apps if they're not installed). According to Apple this is the way it's meant to be, with "national" apps that you have to repurchase if you leave a region.
If Apple changed anything, it was over 3 years ago.
that is pure evil, unless an app uses licensed content there is no reason whatsoever to region lock apps.
Apple needs to redo not only iTunes but their back-end as well as both are getting really old not adapted to current usage patterns.
Just noticed Chillingo changed the name of Spice Invaders to Spice Bandits. Guess someone over at Taito gave a call to Apple to say, "what up?"
I hate, hate, HATE that that Bluetooth controller doesn't use a diamond-layout for the buttons but instead just has them as a square. Hello? There is a reason every single 4-button controller ever made (even 2-button controllers after the NES, such as the GameBoy) has put them at an angle in the diamond shape: comfort and ergonomics. Jesus Christ.

I agree with both of you. I feel as though with enough practice I could be comfortable with any control scheme, it's all a matter of if the payoff of spending the time to learn is worth it. In iOS's case I think it is. Nowadays I don't even feel like I'm compromising while playing games like Shantae or Sonic CD.I was debating a reply that implied that 'hardcore' gamers could adjust to any old control set whereas 'casual' gamers couldn't.
enjoy the game, but beat hazard has the most inaccurate virtual stick I've ever used on the iphone
Change it from 'dynamic' to 'fixed' in the options menu.
Yeah, there's definitely some 'sloppiness' there. I try to anticipate it in my movement patterns but you don't always have enough room.nah I did that after my last complaint, but even fixed it doesn't control great, it's like there's a delay between the input and the ship actually moving
I'm with the detractors here. I just can't get behind these virtual stick controls. Some games find creative alternatives, but not so much in Beat Hazard.nah I did that after my last complaint, but even fixed it doesn't control great, it's like there's a delay between the input and the ship actually moving
Just a heads up, for Valentine's Day only we're giving away our game Hypership Out of Control for iPhone/iPad (normally it's $.99).
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hypership-out-of-control/id457560346?mt=8
Hypership is a fast paced shmup style game with an emphasis on speed, reaction time, and memorization. We're rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on the App Store, 85 on metacritic, and we're a finalist for the Pocket Gamer Action / Arcade game of the year. I hope you'll check our game out!
