I'll bet it's returned for the same problem mine had. If so, it's a really really simple fix you can do yourself. If not, you always have service through Samsung (which is top notch).

I'm half tempted to jump on that for myself.
Sounds great! I'm not bothered about the macro keys, F keys and Page cluster being non-mechanical, as I don't use them anywhere near as much as I would use the main keyboard.

Plus, build quality is a major plus point, as I've already been through two Lycosa's and am now using my old G15 which is just poor. Plus I like the style.

Will pick one up next week I think. Can get it for around £90 which is pretty decent. Thanks for your thoughts! :)

Though not totally complete yet, that will give you an idea of how it will feel. Cherry Reds are my personal fav's.

Alternatively, the Coolermaster Quick Fire Rapid Red is the one I'd suggest above all others. I still keep a full keyboard around for work from home (need numpad), and some people are partial to macro keys. MMO players come to mind. If you dont really use either of those, the comfort of having your two hands closer together is quite nice.

The next one up in price is this and next after that is that doesn't say "open box" is another $50.

I'll hazard a guess that another .5GHz isn't worth that, but I could be wrong.
4.3 is a fantastic 24/7 clock for a $30 air cooler. Anything above that and you are in enthusiast territory dealing with a lot more things. It's just not worth it unless you need that speed for something and have got money to burn.

Can someone recommend me a good Asus board for OCing a 2500k? Not too expensive, though. I'm hoping for both for less than $400 if possible.

And I'm hoping to sell off my current motherboard/CPU, what's a fair price to ask for?

NCIX has 2500k's for $200

http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57962&vpn=BX80623I52500K&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1315

They run out of stock on these pretty often, but then they are back in stock just as fast. So even if it is out of stock when you buy you'd probably only have to wait 1 extra day for it to ship.

Nah, I think I might spend $30 on another 4GB of RAM to help with editing video instead (Currently have 4GB).

Thanks, that's $25 cheaper than I was going to spend. And I like how Express shipping is $8 (1-3 days) and Ground is $10 (2-6 days)...hmmmm...

Last question, should I go ahead and get a cooler?

That adapter won't work, it's a single dvi passive adapter and you would need a dual link DVI (different from DVI-D which just means DVI digital) active adapter to pass through the signal.

Sheesh. It even said that on the page. Oh, well. If Compusa ever gets them in new again for 399.99, I'll just wait till I get a new card (next month). Even Nvidia seems like they'll start going DP.

Newegg has the defacto "gaf cooler" for 27.99 - 10 MIR = 17.99. MIR needs the purchase to be done by today though. It would be cutting things close.

Cmd shift 3 for full screen
Cmd shift 4 for a selection

Or get skitch, which is the best screen shot and upload tool for Mac.

Haha, I'm placing my order right now. Thanks!

*Sigh* I didn't even realize there were two different models. Sorry. Personally, I ordered this yesterday and don't regret it. But if you don't mind paying twice as much, the EVO is the successor. Maybe you can still cancel if it bothers you.

I'm just waiting for a 120Hz 32" OLED TV/monitor.

It will come at some point, right? ;_;

Not willing to give up size/colors for 120Hz just yet...
Hey, I was waiting on SED, and... well, yeah...

Anyway, you may want to check out one of the upcoming 120Hz PVA, and IPS models. Even PLS will hit 120 long before OLED becomes fully viable.

What, where? I haven't heard anything about these yet. Right now I'm staring at a 19x12 TN panel with one stuck blue pixel staring at me all day :(

There have been bits of info the last few months from different vendors.

120 Hz VA panels coming from AUO

For instance, AUO has already showed at least one model since that story was posted. We should see some more solid word starting with CeBIT 2012, in two weeks.

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
I tried using Lucid Virtu for the first time today and had all kinds of issues. I started up diablo 3 and my frames were extremely low. I then tried to launch Team Fortress 2 and blue screened before the game even finished launching. I restarted and started watching a video and my computer froze within a few minutes with a black screen. lol

I do not have any of those issues otherwise. Anyone know what may be up? I checked around and a few others seem to have the same issues, and I noticed a few people mentioned problems with it when using an SSD.

I'm using latest version of Lucid, with default settings in bios and within the Lucid software.

As long as it'll let me OC to 4.3 GHz or so I'm good with it. It looks pretty big in the unboxing video on Newegg.

It's more than fine. $18 for that HS is a deal.

Does anyone know what "RCH" is? I'm pricing a budget computer, emphasis on budget, but I don't want to nickel and dime it to death.

32GB RAM max vs 16GB

Lucid Virtu Technology

Bio-Remote2 for HTPC concept

Charger Boost for iPhone/iPAD Charger by PC

Or something.

My friend is about ready to join PC Gaming (Yay) and asked me to put some parts together for him. I chose his as close to mine as I could since he's mentioned he'd be fine with mine, but he said his budget was $700. With him having told me that, I figured I'd come to GAF so he can get better parts. These are the things I picked out for him as a possibility (I was going to come in for a second opinion before he bought anything, anyway):

Case
GPU
RAM
PSU
CPU
Mobo
HDD
Monitor
OS

I'm thinking the things that need improvement are the CPU and possibly the mobo. The GTX 460 should still be a pretty decent card for most games, I think. What do you guys recommend? He's not going to worry about overclocking or anything, if that matters.

Swap to i3 2100 and H61 board in the OP. An x4 Phenom can do well on the low end if it's OC'd, but he'll have a good upgrade path and performance with an i3 for now.
460 is a good buy, 6870 is a ludicrous value if you can fit it in with rebate.

If he's a student find out how to get the $30 Win 7 deal

PSU is not going through, I'm just going to assume it's a CM eXtreme something which is ok.

So I finally got my tax monies and ordered all my parts, should have them Tuesday. Thanks everyone in the thread for helping me find the best stuff for the best price. I stuck with Amazon mainly because I have Prime and no taxes. Without this, I'm sure I would have been overspending like crazy. Anyway on to what I got.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 Mid Tower

Graphics: SAPPHIRE AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB

Mobo: ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM

CPU: Intel Core i3-2120

PSU: Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus Series 500W ATX12V V2.3 Power Supply

RAM: Kingston Technology HyperX 8 GB (2x4 GB Modules) 1600 MHz

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200 500 GB

Monitor: ASUS VH202T-P 20' Widescreen LCD

Grand Total: Around $700 for everything.

I'm pretty happy with it, should work well for me for awhile. I'll try and post some pics of the build when I get everything. Again, Thanks guys!

So...I'm excited about my 2500k. It's not possible my current CPU bottlenecking my GPU, is it? (Phenom II and a Radeon 6950)

After much much testing (two months worth) I've come to the conclusion that my CPU's bust. So I'm just looking at the bright side and choosing this time to upgrade my aging rig. Basically, I've found a pretty decent combo that's:
Asus M5A78L-M MX
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4ghz
2 GB RAM DDR3

I'd probably be adding a 6850 HD or if I'm feeling spendful I might go for a GeForce 560GTX. I'll also upgrade to 4 GB RAM minimum. The rig doesn't sound like much compared to what I've seen from some folks here but thing is, I live in Argentina, and it's pretty much as far as I'll be able to reach.

So, knowledgeable gaffers, any comments on the rig? I've never used AMD processors or video cards, so I'm a little worried about that and it's the main reason I might end up buying a 560GTX... Also, the deal's pretty good and I'm wondering if maybe the mobo's not as acceptable as I think it is or something like that...

That mobo seems flakey.

For the price of $60 and $120 you should be able to snag a H61 board and Intel 2100 like the others above. Easily upgradable to a nice quad down the line, better gaming performance.
I'm not sure on GPU pricing where you are, but if the 6870 is just $20-30 more than a 6850 that is what I would get. 4GB RAM minimum on any current system. 1.5V

If you find some x4 645 or x4 940 clearance for a decent amount cheaper and you can overclock that can be a decent option as well.

I'm going to be ordering parts for my first build next week, I just want to double check that everything I've selected is fine. I live in Australia, so these prices aren't accurate. Basically, everything here will run me $1300. I still need to grab a monitor, M/KB and optical drive, but I haven't decided on them yet.

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($36.98 @ PC Mall)
Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($129.86 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Video Card ($237.86 @ Newegg)
Case: Thermaltake VN300M1W2N ATX Full Tower Case ($124.99 @ Microcenter)
Power Supply: Antec 650W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($74.99 @ NCIX US)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $1040.64

Is the GPU I chose fine for playing BF3 at 1920 x 1080 on high? I've heard people mentioning that it needs 1.5GB of VRAM... I'm only going off what I've read here and on various sites, so I am a bit out of my depth. Hopefully I won't have any problems putting it together, I'm quite excited tbh.

BF3 will use more or less RAM depending on your card. Not a problem.

560Ti is bad value. Look at a 6870 or 560Ti 448 instead. Even better, if possible wait for the release of the 7850, 7870, and 660/670 cards (hopefully) within the next month.

Cool, just found another combo that's the 2100, the H61 mobo and 4GB RAM. I'll go for that, since it's just about an extra $50, and that sorta pays itself with the extra RAM.

The 6870 puts me in the price range of the 560GTX (not Ti though), so I might go for the GeForce since I've used Nvidia all my life.

By the way, I have the misfortune of having a 1920x1200 monitor so pretty much all games are crazy consuming on my rig. I've got no pretenses of playing BF3 on Ultra but a steady framerate on a pretty setting would be achieveable with this rig?

6870 and 560 are about the same iirc.

You'll get good playable frames and graphics with that setup. It's very capable.

Thanks, that's all that I need to know then. Will be about $640 for the whole thing. Cheaper than I was expecting, actually. Might buy an extra 4GB RAM and be done with it.

Hey PC Gaf. I'm looking to pick up a gaming PC for Guild Wars 2 this summer.

I've had my eye on Hazaro's 'Excellent -Best Overall Build' and threw the following into my basket at Novatech.co.uk:

2nd Generation Intel® Core? i5 2500K 3.30GHz Socket LGA1155 - Retail.
IL-I52500K
£165.97

MSI AMD Radeon HD 6970 Lightning 2048MB GDDR5
MSI-6970L
£279.98

Samsung Spin Point EcoGreen F3 SATAII NCQ 500GB 32MB Cache Hard Drive <9.0ms 5400rpm - OEM

Will probably hold off until the new midrange graphics cards are announced by Nvidia/ATI. I already have an existing 500GB HDD so just topping up.

But other than that does the above look OK?

Thanks.

I've been looking for a good long time for a solid gaming keyboard to replace my Logitech G15 that is backlit and looks good too, and I think I may have just found it in the Corsair Vengeance K90.

k90_povh_us_lit.png

Anyone had a chance to use or try one? Mechanical keys for the main keyboard sound good, I like the volume rocker and various backlight settings, and 54 macro keys is more than enough. Plus it looks excellent.

Don't waste your money on the K90/K60. Keyboard is shit. Go get any other mechanical keyboard, whether its a BlackWidow, Mionix Zibal, or a Ducky Shine.

is the NZXT Vulcan case a good choice? Wanting something in the micro atx mid tower category that provides great airflow and venting. Are there any others I should consider as well?

I've got my HTPC/LAN party PC in one and quite like it. No USB3 ports (that I'm aware of) but that's the only real drawback - fairly solid construction, lots of room and good airflow. Be prepared to dust it out a lot, though.

PC GAF, I cannot decide between this MSI 6870 and this Gigabyte 6870, I need your wisdom please! Size of the card isn't too sticky an issue, I'm buying a new mid-tower case and will make sure it fits the card. I'll primarily use this next card for shooters of all types, but particularly the multiplayer Source stuff, STALKERS/Metros, Battlefield 3, the idtech stuff, and also some MMO's on occasion. Any help on this is very appreciated, thanks!

Also: thanks for these awesome PC Build threads over the years, you guys rock!

EDIT: Nevermind. It figures that I would find a decent suggestion through some googling only after I posted this. MSI it probably is, though I should probably wait for the new cards to be shown in the coming month...

The MSI is a great card. I briefly used the 6870 and it OC'd really well and was INCREDIBLY silent. Temps were great too. Have nothing bad to say about the card and the cooler on it. A+ from me.

Woo, purchase made: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4XX6

Shaved off some dollars by deciding to stick with my current monitor, which is already 22" 1680x1050, just needs to be cleaned up a bit.

I'd check out this thread:
570 is not so great a buy right now, eVGA doesn't even list that 570 model as step up eligible in the US.

I had added a note in the OP for new cards, I'll add it to the build sheets now as well.

You won't be disappointed, it's just that new cards are finally coming up.
