PS Vita western launch thread, p. 2 | Simply the most desirable handheld yet released

Sure is a desirable handheld. I went out and bought a HK unit + virtua tennis and umvc3 (store didn't have any memcards in stock so I had to go with games that didn't use it). Goddamn at that screen quality!

I do notice something odd with it though. I sometimes notice faint streaks of vertical lines, especially in single color backgrounds (like pure gray). Is it noticeable on other vitas, or do I have a defective unit? I also get the blotches in pure black screens but that's normal I believe.

I saw these at a store at pmall in toronto. They didnt look like genuine hori protectors to me. Also they only cover the vita's screen not the entire front face.

Ugh thanks for pointing that out, I didn't even look at the actual packaging lol.

I'll drop by Pacific later to see what else they have. I'm just interested in the full front ones.

No idea how good these ones are compared to the Hori ones as well just in case people don't have easy access to them

I haven't seen anyone else on the net post the problems I have with PSP saves on my Vita. I've moved saves from PSP>PS3>Vita, PSP>PC>Vita, and even tried Micro SDHC PC Adapter>PC>Vita. In Tactics Ogre and Oath of Felghana, my saves show up in the menu system, but when trying to load them I get a message saying my load data is corrupted. For Crush, it says I have no load data. This is all on the launch firmware, I had not tried any PSP saves prior to v1.61. The saves are coming from a 5.50 GEN-D3 CFW PSP, but I don't see why that would effect things. I've already tried everything in the Vita Format/Recovery menu, but there was no change.

Here's Sony support's response:
Unfortunately, PS Vita users cannot continue using their save data for PSP games that they have also downloaded from PlayStation®Store to PS Vita. I do apologize, currently we do not have any additional information as to why this is not an option, or if it will be available later.

So much for "PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) specialist."

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to lose my progress in my PSP titles, especially the 60+ hours I've spent in Tactics Ogre!

Still haven't received my Wipeout code from Vodafone. I am getting very bored of this now, I just want my game. I'll give them another ring tomorrow if it hasn't arrived by then. I imagine it is an issue with them adding the data plan themselves.

I absolutely love my Vita but it really sucks that problems with buying games and problems with Vodafone are both sullying my experience with it.

Having read what everyone is saying about Uncharted I think I may buy it soon. I have more than enough games to play right now but I am really craving a good traditional single player game on Vita.

It has arrived!!! Spent a good portion of yesterday playing with it; it appears that Hot Shots is going to get most of my time so far! Downloading Trails in the Sky now, as well.

Loving my vita but I have a huge problem at the moment.

I've used the same PS3 account on my Vita as I want to keep the user name and so that I can re download old games and get more trophies.

However the account was a sub account, my brother's being the master. (Due to getting the PS3 when I was under 18) So whenever I go to the Vita shop to purchase stuff I have to top up the master account which would be fine if it was a similar case to the PS3 having account switching but as the Vita doesn't, I am stuffed and I'm not always with my PS3.

Such a stupid system and I've complained about Sub/Master accounts before. Just let us fucking change Sony

If you have the saves on your PC you just need that and your Vita.

Create a new save on the Vita, then transfer the file from your PC into your Vita save file. It should ask you to overwrite the old save and use the save from your PC.

Or read this instead. I don't know if any of this will help..

Mutant Blobs Attack is an utter delight. It's funny, because a lot of what it does (physics based platforming, occasional touch controls) usually annoy the hell out of me, but it just all comes together in a fantastic package. Some nice nods to gaming culture too.

Don't be put off by screenshots thinking this an iOS type thing - it's amazing.

I love how Vita players can see PS3 players but PS3 players can't see Vita players because SONY HASN'T CODED IT INTO THE PS3 OS YET

goddam

WHAT in the WORLD. I thought my phone had a nice screen (at least looking at it head on), but looking at it next to the Vita is depressing for my phone.

Thanks, friend.

Doof!

This is one of my biggest annoyances (also, that you can't see individual Vita trophies on PS3 yet).

At least until they [hopefully] fix it, it gives me a way to stalk my friends on PSN who lack Vita.

Uncharted is really great. You forget you're playing a handheld game at times. A true killer app so far (4 chapters in)

Turned on Auto-aim (Think Red Dead Redemption style) and it's ALOT better

Agreed though, it's fantastic and I love the emphasis on exploration/traversal and not gunplay

I was just about to write this. It's the same crappy deal with Vita trophies too.

Surely these two features would only serve to advertise the Vita to PS3 only owners? Get on it Sony!

Edit: The worst part is that my friends that are on their PS3 can't even see me as online when I am on my Vita. WTF?

PS3 players may go crazy if a bunch of Vita friends keep signing in and out by the system to conserve battery life.

They should continue to refine the Vita system first and then update PS3 if necessary. They may need to come up with a new status icon for Vita users though. After all, we can sign in to PS3 and Vita using the same account at the same time.

On the vita side, it shows a vita or dualschock next to the name

Crisis averted! What I thought was a bunch of micro scratches on my Vita's screen was just dust and hairline pockets of air under my screen protector. Managed to get most of them out but there's one big bubble left that I don't want to remove out of fear of allowing more dust onto the screen. Is there any full proof method of removing dust and bubbles? I'm already doing the hot water and tape thing.

Wipeout combat mode is fun. Like repeating 20 times to achieve elite pass Iaintevenmad fun.

That turning back mechanic with the right stick is awesome, it's great to charge a plasma bolt, turn back, kill two ships while the rest blaze around you (usually hitting you with some missiles but oh well, Qirex shields motherfuckers!)

Just checking in to give a few vita impressions. I'm taking a few mins break right now.

The SCREEN....OMG this thing is unbelievable. I consider myself very picky when it comes to picture quality (I have a calibrated Panny Plasma), but this OLED screen blows everything else out of the water. After playing uncharted for a few mins and then going to my iphone 4 or even my PC monitor, you can see the difference clearly. The analog nubs are infinitely better than the PSP circle pad thing.

I am very happy with my purchase. I haven't tried UMvC3 or Rayman yet, but I expect them to be very nice for launch titles. I hope this system gets a lot of support and piracy doesn't become an issue. I'm very interested in OLED now and hope that they start getting rolled out in as PC monitors and eventually big screen TVs :)

So, no one with the same problem?

Wait till you get to the later levels!

Also, it's strange that I now see so many people on my friends list with the orange away symbol. That never used to happen before.

My Vita has arrived in the main post office of my region since Friday, so I hope to get it tomorrow or maybe Tuesday.

So, no one with the same problem?

When I was loading up Lumines tonight, I did noticed these faint bitch black lines (some straight vertical, others, a sort of weird smattering) that were sporadically place against that less dark/gray loading screen.

It's only distinguishable in those type of load black screens, but it does worry me.

Saw I got several friend requests tonight! Looks to be all gaffers too, which is great! Accepted all the add requests I got and just wanted to post a thank you to those that did add me. Hope to see you all online! My friend list doesn't look so empty or lonely anymore :D
Nice I need more gaf vita pals also. Vita handle is kincade

Caved and took advantage of best buy's trade in promo yesterday. Turned my psp-1000 and 3ds (plus $90) into a vita.

Weird coming from iOS. The device is nice, but feels cheap. The trade off between making something light and portable versus expensive-feeling.

I don't like the OS. GUI aesthetics aside, there have been some bad user experience areas. My biggest peeves being tap a skittle to open a start screen, then tap again to start; then some confusing bits during the initial set up regarding signing into psn/updating firmware and credit card info.

Today I have to find a damn 32 gb memory card. Going all digital distribution. I have no desire to deal with physical media anymore.

Psn: noiretoile if you're looking for more vita friends.

I got more than 8 friend requests and I don't know who they are or where they're from, hopefully their from GAF.

And yea, Uncharted is godly, and so is WipEout.

It seems like im' not always connected to PSN when doing various things on the system while at home. Like, i'll fire up a game and all the sudden get the "signing into PSN" notice, then get a notification of who'se online... but why haven't I been signed in the whole time?

Same. Partly why I rarely bother to play games w/ people on my friends list, I don't know who the majority of them are.

I did some researching again and found another user with the same problem:

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff131/MetroidSlayer0/photo.jpg

Apparently, it seems to be another common problem with OLED screens (I even notice it sometimes with my Super AMOLED equipped phone, just forgot about it). Oh well, everything else about the screen is awesome though

In Tales from Space, does anyone else have the problem that the blob keeps moving to the right when you aren't touching the stick? It makes some parts pretty tricky and I'm worried that the analogue stick is dodgy. It looks dead-centre and I haven't had trouble with any other games, so I don't know if it's because Tales from Space has a problem or if it's just really sensitive and picking up on a tiny shift off-centre on the stick. Should I be worried or is this a common problem?

(The game is still great fun though, only £5.49 on the UK store and I'll repeat a comment from earlier in this thread that you shouldn't be put off by the graphics!)

Help me out here please GAF. Just bought God Of War: Ghost of Sparta 'cause I'm a GOW and graphics whore. Is there any other PSP game that I absolutely have to download to my Vita?

Powerstone Collection looks great... Prinny looks great... Ridge Racer is kinda meh... Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles is gorgeous... and Peace Walker's very nice as well! (I'm using bilinear filtering on all the 3D games, btw)... Ghost of Sparta is really spectacular, however. I'm about halfway through it now and can't stop playing, despite having 12 Vita launch titles to play...

Despite being pretty lukewarm on the Vita from the start, I couldn't resist the pull of a new system with cash burning a hole in my pocket. Picked one up on Friday with a 16 GB memory stick, no physical media for me if I can help it.

I know it's been said before, but the Vita is a really well designed piece of hardware. Usually it's fairly easy to tell where a console is seriously lacking and what the inevitable revisions will improve, but aside from battery life, the mediocre camera and the reduced range of motion you get with tiny analog sticks, I really feel they've come up with a winner right out of the gate. Beautiful, sturdy, quiet, responsive. I just disappear into the thing when playing games, and I'm not really left wanting for much while holding it.

The OS is better than I was expecting going by videos and impressions. There's some head scratching UI and system level decisions in there for sure, but it's also snappy, easy to navigate, and surprisingly pleasant aesthetically (I thought the screenshots looked like shit). And I've realized that I am a sucker for the "sounds of future commerce" soundtrack they're going for, puts me right in the mood to relax and buy some shit.

I do wish there was more to do out of the box, the 3DS spoiled me a bit in that regard. Fireworks is pretty decent as far as AR games go, but it's also not really practical to break out at any given time. Near seems cool and it's a neat feature no doubt, but it's also a mess of an application from a design standpoint. Nintendo's StreetPass Plaza on 3DS is not the same thing, but it's a far more successful and entertaining social addition than Near is to the Vita in it's current state. The web browser is shit and I have other devices for music/movies, I really just bought the thing for games.

And so far, so good on that front. Rayman is new for me and absolutely gorgeous, Lumines is as good as that series gets, Mutant Blobs and Super Stardust are both reasonably priced gems. Katamari and UMvC3 round out my launch haul. Looking forward to the future of this device, a little nervous that it's going to lose support quickly if it doesn't set the world on fire, but I'm satisfied with my purchase.

Hey guys. Hope someone can help with this.

Bought the Vita with my brother and he took it away with him for the weekend as i wasn't bothered about the launch titles. Anyways at setup i tried to login to my PSN account but it said an update was required so I couldnt login and had to just select no for that.

Anyways my brothers created an alternate account just so he could play online. Now how can i log into the other account? All the stuff we have bought is on the other account. Am i gonna have to format the mem card and Vita?

Also, until I watched a youtube a few days ago, I thought Lumines was pronounced "Loo-mines", not "Loo-mun-es". The more you know.

I think it's supposed to be like the word luminescent, just without the 'cent'. The pronunciation follows that as well.

Quick question - can this lovely gadget connect to a WPA2 network? Mine is struggling.

Anyone else having trouble connecting their Vita to Wi-Fi? I can't seem to get mine to work. It will either give me no ip address or no internet connection even though I'm clearly connected on the PC and PS3 at the moment with no troubles at all.

I'm having intermittent issues. It connects to WPA2/Personal just fine but A) will not auto-connect with a non-public SSID (i.e. the name is not being broadcast), and b) intermittently drops the connection with no warning or error message. This wasn't obvious until I spent an hour or so surfing the web - I really hope these are just teething issues.

I already go crazy with my PS3 friends signing in and out. Can't believe we can't turn that type of notification off.

Me too! I generally couldn't care less when my friends are online/offline, but if I turn off notifications, I miss messages and invites. So stupid.

Also, is there any word on when the Vita's getting Skype?
