PS Vita western launch thread, p. 2 | Simply the most desirable handheld yet released

I'm lucky, I use GT5 as my 'proper' sim and only needed GT: PSP to give me exactly what it did, the ability to run time trials on lots of tracks with lots of lovely sexy cars, with proper sim style handling / physics. As a portable game I don't want some long-winded career full of filler races.

I honestly think the structure of GT: PSP is perfect for a portable game. A little more integration with GT5 wouldn't hurt though.

Can you name any other portable sim, ever, except for GT: PSP?

Me neither. I reckon we're waiting for GT: Vita.

You are right about that, because the design is perfect for handhelds and I know what I am asking for is a bit niche. I still play GT2 on my PSP because I love the progression in that game, but it is definitely not designed for a handheld.

And yeah, this is really more of a wishlist thing for me. I just want ONE nice, career-based racing game on a handheld. And with the Vita and how gorgeous the games are, I just hoped we would be getting something.

Wishful thinking and all that...

Can you get the Capcom Collections via PSN? W/ the D-Pad being as great as it is, the idea of playing SF2 on the go would be awesome.

It's really freaking me out that I paid almost $400 for a console and a card just to have a questionable product in the end...
Commercial OLEDs like SAMOLED+ still emit light on black, if viewed in complete darkness (Come to think of it - so did the CRTs, or maybe that was phosphor lag).
An LCD in same conditions emits a whole lot MORE light though (although some use creative dynamic-contrast cheats when displaying solid blacks, that have no bearing on real images).

I just did a quick side by side with Galaxy Nexus, Vita and PSPGo - and the former look virtually the same (aside for shape of blotches), while the latter looked like a flashlight next to them (all were displaying solid black, viewed in a dark-room).

Well I see it only when in a dark room, and when the screen displays a black background. How dark, I'm not sure. Lights out during night is enough for the blotches to appear, but during the day, I actually have a hard time seeing them. Even tried showing it to someone else during the day and we both couldn't see the artifacts.

Only time I noticed it while actually playing a game was during UMVC3's startup screens with the capcom/marvel logos.

That's probably it, then. I'm never actively looking for it and would only see it during, say, a loading screen.

Is it safe to swap Vita game cards while the system is powered on? Say on the dashboard or when in standby? (not during a running game obviously)

What about my Zune HD? I can put a picture on it that's just blackness, and I turn off the lights in my room and there's no light whatsoever coming from it.

Not true -- I know at least one other person with a Vita!
It's actually kind of depressing for me, I don't know a single person in real life who owns a Vita besides myself. I think this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I've been preaching the gospel of Vita to all my friends but no one is buying it...

What I meant was that the color reproduction and black levels are almost worse than on my TN TFT LCD monitor. And the battery doesn't even last 4 hours of gameplay with Flight Mode on and the brightness being on its lowest level.

I'm a bit of a display snob, and you're completely, utterly, bafflingly wrong. Either your device is broken and you should get a replacement or your eyes are broken and you should see a doctor.

Edit: I just noticed I was a few pages late in this tab. Still, the original post was so wrong it bears repeating!

Don't know how representative this phone shot is, but here you go.

I'll give my Vita to a friend in the coming days. He's got an awesome camera so he should be able to take some decent comparison photos. I hope that I'm just panicking for no reason.

Not that I can't take it back and ask for a new one, but why go through such trouble. XD
A photo simply cannot reveal the reality.

Display an all black image on your LCD (video black) and do the same on your Vita. Unless the LCD disables the backlight (which has no bearing on imagery) it will glow brightly. In a dark room it will appear more gray than black. Try this and you'll see one major advantage.

The Vita, on the other hand, should appear almost completely dark with just the faintest of glow (showing those blotches).

When you begin to display imagery on the Vita, this deeper contrast allows for much darker, richer shadows than an LCD. This actually leads to the appearance of richer colors across the board.

OLED is also much FASTER than an LCD and displays little to no after image. It's not quite CRT fast, but it's about on par with a good plasma (without the yellow phosphor trails).

Yeah, LCDs emit significantly more light when display anything. Disabling the backlight on black is just a cheat as the second anything appears on screen the blacks light up again.

I was disappointed that consumer OLED screens still emit a bit of light on black. It's very minor, but I expected zero emission. As it stands, video black appears a bit darker than my Pioneer Kuro 2nd gen, which is still a nice improvement and light years away from other TVs on the market.

I know, my mind broke in two when I read that. I'd really like to know how he's drawing this conclusion.

Like I said, my Zune HD emits no light whatsoever. I've tested it multiple times in pitch black rooms.

Worse is that they emit light in only some parts of the display with others showing pure black causing the stains I complained about earlier in this thread. I'm hoping that by the time a revision comes around OLED technology will have progressed enough that this will be solved.

? I have asked friends which have a Zune HD and they found it does emit light. Either they are lying or you got a very lucky Zune HD.
I have been playing my Vita every day since launch. Screen looks incredible when it is on. So, who cares what it looks like when it is off?!? I swear some of you would bitch about the scattered clothes of a naked supermodel in your bed.
Black scenes are displayed when it's on too you know. Just play a dark game in a completely dark room and you'll see what people are saying.

The two PSP games I am most interested in purchasing digitally for my Vita are The 3rd Birthday and Dead or Alive Paradise (don't judge me).

Anyone have any experience with these two on Vita? How do they look? Run well?

I have no idea since I'm the opposite. Inverted camera makes no sense to me unless I'm playing a flight sim.

Edit: Apparently there are these options in the game. Try changing them and see what happens.

Im looking, I cant find anything like that at all.
Sorry.
I checked in the main menu, couldnt find it, checked the pause menu, couldnt find it there either. What am I missing?

3rd birthday looks amazing. Most improved visuals from the Vita screen from what I have seen. Also the controls are improved tenfold by the inclusion of mapping the camera to the right analog. Makes me actually want to play the game now.

Anyway, OLED is not a perfect technology by any means, but I'm glad they put it on Vita rather than an LCD.

OK, guys, I'll just put an end to this discussion. The reason I felt the way I did was because I though the OLED doesn't emit light whatsoever. You were only supposed to say: "It's not perfect. It does emit some light." Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks to everyone who shed some light on this issue :)

I'm back to making my game now.

That's the best description of NeoGAF that I've seen in a long time.

Just in case anyone else was wondering about the camera options in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. You need to access to options menu from a quest map. If you try to access it from the village it will not display all the options. Why? Because of Japanese devs, that's why.

One question: the US Hori screen protector is matte or gloss? Japan got 2 versions: matte (blue) and gloss (red), but US seems to got only one. Which one?
