Anyone know if crescent axe gets much better from 40->50FAI? 40->43 would only increase the AR by a couple of points. Seems to hit pretty hard, but I'm surprised the AR is only like 480 or so with 40 faith. I only have enough STR to two hand it though. And what's the best talisman? I'm bugged out of the sunlight covenant miracles and I'm not using dark moon blade, currently have WOG and gravelord greatsword dance attuned.

Thorolund is best for low faith, Canvas is the best for medium Faith, Ivory and Sunlight are very good for High faith, and then Darkmoon is the best for High faith.

Also Faith scaling for weapons is pretty ass, I think scaling for all skills gets pretty terrible after 40.

I come to the conclusion that I really suck at this game. I'm at the beginning where you go through the light and the fat demon smashes the balcony and fall. Yeah. Can't get pass that part. Encountering normal enemies is a huge risk. This game really is no joke.

You have to immediately jump down on him and attack him while falling, that'll take half his health.
Don't give up, the game isn't all that hard, you just have to take your time to learn the mechanics. ;-)

Had a bunch of fun gravelording Painted World this afternoon. Mainly just fighting the same invader over and over again (which was fine as he was gravelording as well).

I quickly lost the first two using the great syth (opponent using the gravelord sword). I switch to my Uchigatana and won the next two (by the skin of my teeth). On the rubber match, it was hilarious as we did a double knock-out.

The great thing about the fight was it was straight melee. None of the battles involved magic, miricles or pyro. Also not a single backstab or fishing for backstabs. Time like this that just love this game.

I think it would have been a cool touch if killing the blacksmiths and having their respective hammers allowed you to modify your equipment the same way they were able to.

Sounds interesting, but what then would be a penalty for actually killing the blacksmith?

Died trying to find my way up the waterwheel out of Blighttown, then died almost immediately thereafter, falling off a platform because of janky camera angles while fighting a fucking mosquito of all things. 50K+ souls, down the drink.

*Sigh*

Pressed on to Sen's Fortress, lost maybe 10K souls or so, but everything there gives at least 500 when you kill them, so I made up for it quickly. The lightning spear made things considerably easier once I got it (Jesus, is EVERYTHING vulnerable to lightning?), so I cruised to the boss and beat it without much trouble. Upgraded my equipment, so now I'm rocking a +10 Claymore and a +3 on that lightning spear. Gonna put off Anor Londo until I chalk up some chores completed.

-Grab the loot I missed in the fortress and Blighttown
-Need to kill the ninja for the DWGR
-Need to absolve my sins do the NPC in the swamp will upgrade my pyromancy glove.
-Maybe clear out the Great Hollow and Ash Lake, dunno yet.

Is the elite knight armor worth upgrading? I haven't really upgraded any armor except for the Black Leather set specifically for Blighttown or needing to use the rusted iron ring instead of Havel's. Just seems like I keep coming across armor sets with relative frequency and don't want to spend the resources upgrading if something else is more worthwhile.

Booshka

Member
Yes, Elite Knight Armor is worth upgrading, at least with Titanite Shards and Large Shards, then if you really like it, you can commit some chunks to it. I try to never lock on to the mosquitoes, if you do that and are trying to move through the level, your are gonna walk off the planks and die. I usually just keep moving and don't even attack them. If you are gonna attack them, stop moving and let them come to you. Throwing knives sounds like a great strategy as well.

I figured, this is my first faith character so I thought I'd try out faith weapons which I never used before. I like the crescent axe despite its relative weakness though. I guess if I bring this guy to 120 for pvp i'll probably wind up using a chaos/lightning weapon though. A shame, i loved the meat cleaver in Demons Souls, that has awesome faith scaling.

I need some PVP tips, I just can't seem to kill people very often on PS3.

If i'm not getting lagstab to death then people are using DWGR and spamming Wrath of the gods. Game alot of fun but it would be better if I didn't get owned during PvP.

You are better off making a weapon Normal +15 then buffing it with Sunlight Blade or Darkmoon Blade, at 50 Faith the buff will up the damage by ~400 points. Elemental weapons aren't very good for 120 level PvP because everyone has high resistances, so you wont get the damage that you'd expect.

It's all about your build and your gear, you need to find gear that has good poise (56 at least and 76 is optimal) Good defense stats and looks cool if you can. Then a weapon that has good scaling, or is elemental with a good moveset that complements your playstyle. You need to play quick and evasive, which is why most people use DWGR, and because it allows you to play quick and evasive with plenty of poise (this is poor balance, but it's part of the game right now).

Sitting behind a shield and fighting like it's PvE will not work, you will get backstabbed and abused by poke attacks, magic, etc. If you are getting destroyed by Wrath of God try rolling through the cast then attacking, backstab if you can. Or, get a good magic resist shield (Crest Shield is the best) and just block it.

Sadly in PvP you are going to have to deal with high defense, high poise ninja flip builds. It is the most viable way to PvP in Dark Souls, and the Poise system along with the DWGR allows it to be exploited, so everyone that is serious about PvP is going to use it.

Definitely have DWGR equipped, you'll get backstabbed less than if you're not using it. Wrath of gods is pretty easy to roll through once you get the timing, and right after that there's an opening to get a backstab of your own. I used to dread WOG users but now what trips me up the most is great scythe and dragonslayer spear users. lagstabs suck but you kind of just have to assume the game is lagging even if you don't really perceive it. So don't do a a long cast unless you're further away than you think you'd need to be, etc.

If you want the most fair PVP, wait to get invaded in undead burg. Second best is waiting to get invaded in painted world.

True, dismissed darkmoon blade because I already killed gwyndolin, forgot about sunlight blade. I'm sure a +15DGM with sunlight blade will wreck shit..need a ton more STR.

Woot! I found an easy way to take down the great armors with two Great Lightning Spears each, so I farmed them until I had all the titanite chunks I need. Now at +5 Lightning Great Scythe.

So I went into Duke's Archives and promptly got stomped to death by the boar. Oh joy.

You only need 27 STR to 2H the DGM, and it's only worth 2H. You will get about 1050 damage with a +15 DGM and Sunlight blade, and about 1100 with DMB at Rank 3, with Faith at 50 with Darkmoon Talisman.

I remember going back to the Archives on my ng++, having sailed through ng+ super easily... only to get stabbed and killed by one of the local grunts on my way to a chest. That taught me.
Also, great scythe is a great choice. I took mine to +15 and it never disappointed: great reach, great moves set, and the forward+R2 is the bane of almost every monster in the game.

I'm on my 3rd playthough & playing pretty cocky.
That caused me a few deaths to regular grunts as well lol.

Yeah I'd only go 2H with DGM, right now I only have enough STR to 2H the crescent axe. So I still need 15 points there, but I think I will go with +15DGM + sunlight blade for sure. Think I'll co-op O&S a bunch and pvp in painted world to farm some souls :D

Man, 400 hours, platinum trophy, and I'm still excited to boot this game up after work on any given day. No game has ever hooked me like this. I might need an intervention.

I'm serious about PvP and I don't use gear with high poise and defense and despite that I'm destroying people with my SL60 character at Kiln of the first flame (I use Beatrice/Thorm set).

I hate seeing players flipping around with their Giant/Havel set and a giant weapon. That's just ridiculous.
At least at SL60 I don't see these jerks too often. Thank god.

Does Shiva's bodyguard relocate after you've joined and been banished from the covenant? Or is the ghost ninja still the right of her little hut?

Just to add on to Booshka's post.

I make builds specifically based on a weapon that I intend on using. Try all the weapons available and see which move set you like. Fast weapons with almost no whiff penalties are good for fast poking oriented play, slow weapons with big swings are good for crowd control and catching people off guard with the longer range. What version of the weapon you will want to use also depends on your level. For low level PvP (up to around SL 60-70) chaos or lightning is best. For higher level PvP (80 onwards), it's easiest to get the best damage output with a good stat scaling weapon at +15, then casting crystal magic weapon or sunlight/darkmoon blade.

Some weapons that are good for folks who are just starting out in PvP:
Fast weapons
Uchigatana & Iaito (dex builds, causes bleeding even on block)
Washing pole (same as above, but with better range and since it scales poorly with stats make it chaos or lightning)
Rapier (dex builds, good backstab, deceptive range, very fast attacks)

Slow weapons
Zweihander (wide angle sweep attack)
Black knight great axe (wide angle sweep attack)

Also if you're just starting out in PvP, don't play in darkwood forest. That place is infested with griefers sitting at SL 200 onwards waiting to stomp lower level characters. Instead try painted world (at the bonfire) or darkmoon tomb (also at the bonfire). Both areas have a nice hide and seek aspect to it, and the terrain is not as hard to manage.

Last but not least, learn to recognize certain animations and spell effects visually. Prepare to roll if you're close range and the opponent takes out a talisman, or if he prepares a slow cast like lightning bolts or fireballs, unlock, roll in, and grab a free backstab.

Disappointed that I didn't make much progress today. The Scaleless Dragon cursed me so I had to backtrack to get the purging stone from the dude at the top of the parish.

I finally beat the hydra though, which turned out to be pretty easy once you realize his simple pattern. Surprised that I didn't get any souls though.

I'm also thinking about switching my Zweinhander for a bit to a Ice Halberd (Attack: 262). It seemed to be faster, which is going to be pretty useful to stab the dragon after his attack animation and then run away.

You actually could have saved yourself a lot of time; the clams in the room right before Seath drop purging stones sometimes.

If by ice halberd you mean crystal halberd, I wouldn't bother. 1 - you can pick up a free crystal halberd in anor londo, and 2 - you cannot repair crystal weapons. You can use it for the time being but you won't be able to repair it. Also, you could and probably should have a weapon that has a greater AR than 262 by the time you're at Seath. I'd upgrade your Zwei to lightning, or take it to +15 if you have the very large ember and lots of strength.

Where do you get a very large amber? My Zwein is currently at +10 and I don't have any weapons stronger than that (other than the Dragon Tooth which seems very slow for my tastes).

At the +10 you have the zwei, you can bring it to Lightning Zweihander at the giant blacksmith in anor londo. I recommend this, a lightning zwei is a great weapon (pretty common in pvp too). It will stop scaling with strength after this, but I'm sure you will see a big damage boost. The very large ember is in new londo ruins, once it's drained. But a +15 zweihander would only be better than a lightning +5 (you can upgrade more it once you make it lightning) if you have very high strength - don't know the numbers but it's a rule of thumb.

In the big room with the two huge guards right before Ornstein and Smough, take the staircase to the left (the one with the silver knight archer on it). Up there you should find a hallway/staircase that leads to this blacksmith.

Not sure what you mean, but I'll give you a quick rundown of those two Forest Protector dudes:

1. Join covenant - Shiva and his bodyguard appear by Alvina's perch.
2. Go to Blighttown - find them to the right of the bonfire (upon leaving the tunnel) in the swamp.
3. Attack/kill them in Blighttown - get their stuff.
4. Fail to kill them in Blighttown - they relocate back to their original forest positions (hostile, obviously), where you can still kill them to get their stuff.

Hit over a million souls earlier today. So scared im going to fuck up and lose all of them. Im just having too much fun at sl 60 that i dont want to level.

Thinking about starting a new build soon too. was thinking either a straight smough clone or a high vit/armor/resistance build with elemental weapons

zwei would be more along the lines of str/dex, iirc. Can't be bothered to look it up right now. Either way if you go +15 there's no real reason to use it instead of Demon's Great Machete and its ilk, unless they really love the R2 of the zwei.

Just buy some Rings of Sacrifice. Any time you die, put one on until you're able to get to your blood stain. If you die before you get there, your souls will remain since dying with a Ring of Sacrifice equipped doesn't leave a new blood stain.

Good lord, this topic lives on and on without any stop.

I wasn't a member before Dark Souls came out but followed everything from pre release to release to patch notes... First game I really enjoyed after dieing more and more and learning from my misttakes. Gonna play it after I finish FFXIII2 and Asuras Wrath.

:)

New game, new character, new adventure

Played a bit over the weekend, just advancing further with a NG+ character. And turns out there's a bit of a hotbed of PvP activity right before Centipede Demon's door. My character is SL99, and I had no problems constantly invading and being constantly invaded, and there were red signs as well to call people in. And everyone was well behaved, waiting before the door and fighting full melee.

I've never PvPed around this SL (always kept my characters below SL80) and it was good fun. I'd say I lost the majority of the fights, but at least most of the time both of us were down to a 1-hit for the win. Gotta better myself though.

I already parked the character @ The Kiln, and I'll stay there for a while -- farming chunks, raising to SL115 and trying different PvP weapons & equipment builds (character has less VIT then appropriate, but high END/STR/DEX so I can switch around a lot of things). Only PvPed at the Kiln last year, when I got to Gwyn the very first time and the experience was a combination of the occasional pair of funky folks waiting to gang you up & regular people looking for a fair fight, with more of the latter. How's the behaviour of people waiting there these days and around that SL? I'll move to another place if it's all bad manners.

There's still lots of laggy backstabs, but being able to summon/pvp was definitely made better with the last patch. Especially summoning, you'll see lots of signs now. Humanity is also a bit more common since the patch.

Lots of people playing fair but still lots of assholes in Kiln. You'll find that everywhere, but I find that Undead Burg around 120 is definitely the best place for pvp. I need to try the door near centipedes still..

Last night someone summoned me via red soapstone in painted world. I walk up the stairs, they're hiding using chameleon as a barrel, I proceed to get backstabbed. It was kinda funny but what a jerk.

This is exactly what i did. On my down to Ash Lake i ended up getting cursed by one of them lizards. In Ash Lake i just used the Bonfire down there to keep killing the clams over and over until they gave me purging stones. I did that until i got 4 of them then left. Used one to uncurse myself, then made it all the way out and back to Blighttown without even needing to use the other ones. That was days ago, and i still have them.

I snagged the platinum. Hooray. Gwyn was kicking my ass on NG+ for some reason. I was trying to fight him straight up, without doing a silly heavy armor/tank thing. Just so hard to dodge all of his attacks perfectly.

I beat Seath last night and I'm not really sure how to progress with leveling. I'm SL 68 and haven't been having trouble in any area.

VIT: 25
END: 23
STR: 21
DEX: 20

Ignoring most of the other stats. I kind of want to keep upping END for a while so I can wear heavier gear will still being under 25%, but I do have Havel's Ring and the DWGR.

Will I be boned if I level up to 80 or 90? The only PvP I do is the occasional Dark Woods Covenant run. I really like to co-op bosses but I'm not getting called in very often.

EDIT: Hey Guevara, we've got very similar characters!

Well, just like Demon's Souls, after putting around 50 hours into the game I decided to start over. I had made mistakes and decisions I wasn't happy with (and who could blame me for killing that disgusting pyro trainer! Eggs! Gross!)

The result is so much better! I picked a soldier who is concentrating on Str, Dex, Vit, and End. At Level 38 I have 21, 21, 20, 20 and I will probably just continue on like that until they are all at 30 or so.

No magic, just pure weapons! It's how I mostly play anyway. The Int and Faith scaling doesn't seem worth it so I will content myself with purely physical means. Drake sword served me well for a while but then I found the Black Knight Sword and brought it up to +2 with twinkling titanite. That thing is a beast! Over 350 damage so early.

What I'm curious about now is what are the non-unique magic weapons you can find in the game. I hear there is a Lightning Spear of some kind. Are there other weapon ready to find like Flame, Magic, or Divine?

It doesn't work that way. Souls are given based on your level. If you are an invader and a host kills you, he gets half the souls required for you to level up. If you get killed by an invader he gets 10% of the souls you need to level. Co op phantoms get half of whatever the host gets.

oh i see, makes more sense

Im a darkwraith, so when i invade someone and get like 20,000+ souls that means they were so ridic high level

even more badass.

What do you get for killing a Phantom? One time while I was invading as a Forest Hunter, I received 170k souls when another Forest Hunter killed a Phantom.

The lightning spear is great, I still use it and I upgraded it to +5. You can find it in
Sens Fortress.
It seems like almost everything is weak to lightning.
