And that risk doesn't happen with normal soda and they don't know why.

Heart Attack and Stroke: Drinking diet sodas daily may increase the risks for heart attack and stroke and other vascular events by 43 percent, but no such threat exists with regular soft drinks or with less frequent consumption of diet soda. These results come from a study including more than 2,500 adults published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine on January 30, 2012. So far, no one knows what it is about diet sodas that could explain the added risk.

Kidney Trouble: In 2009, researchers at Harvard found that drinking two or more diet sodas daily could lead to a 30 percent drop in a measure of kidney function in women. No accelerated decline was seen in women who drank less than two diet sodas daily. The drop held true even after the researchers

Preterm Delivery: A Danish study including more than 59,000 women found a link between drinking one or more diet sodas daily and a 38 percent increase in the risk of giving birth to preterm babies; the risk was 78 percent higher among pregnant women who drank four or more diet sodas daily. No such risk was seen with regular soda.

Well fuck.

the hardest thing i ever did was give up my sweet drinks. Harder then giving up a lot of carbs, harder then exercising every day... the biggest problem i had was the drinks. At least if you stay under 2 a day it seems to be ok

I almost switched to diet soda to get off my Pepsi addiction. I keep reading how bad diet soda is so I'm glad I just quit cold pepsi.

Aspartame is my guess.

I stick to non-diet, which obviously has its own risks, but I'd rather have sugar than artificial stuff.

We get this thread every month.

I'm not stopping with diet sodas because thre will be a new study next month and it will be something different. Science is bullshit.

*plugs ears* lalalalalala

Fat people drink diet soda.

Mystery solved.

My first thought too but the article suggests that they controlled for that

After taking into account pre-existing vascular conditions, including body mass index, diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension, they found that individuals who drank diet soft drinks daily were 43 percent more likely to have suffered a vascular event than those who didnÂ’t drink any.

Seems like people in general would be better off if they cut back significantly on any beverage that isn't plain water or plain tea but I doubt anyone actually wants to do that. They tried to outlaw alcohol and that never worked so better to just let people decide for themselves.

Science isn't bullshit, you just have to know how to read these reports.
Without access to the paper I can't look at their result and see if they've found anything but correlation - which does not equal causation (that is, drinking diet sodas may increase risks).

And even then, the other studies mentioned in the other article suggest that this correlation seem to only exist in women - so most of you guys don't have to worry.

I recently convinced my mom to break her addiction to this shit.
Never understood how you could even drink it from a taste stand point, never mind a health one.

Pretty weak that they don't say WHICH type of artificial sweetener this is concerning. I've been keeping a close eye on aspartame for years. I don't trust sucralose yet (which also was made from a failed batch of pesticide) since it's not as old as aspartame.

The number one reason why no diet soda is better when you're being healthy, is that I'm a completely different type of hungry when I drink diet soda than when I drink water. I'm considering it might be a concatenation in my head, that diet soda means happy-time, and that my body says "where's the chocolate?!". Luckily, outside from that one time I had a headache for two days from cutting out diet Pepsi, it's a thing that's easy to kick. When I focus in eating healthy, I normally allow some of my dinners to have a small bottle of diet soda, depending on the food. Makes it taste all that much better.

Almost every diet soda drinker I know is fat as fuck. Many of them also order a Super Size meal with a Super Sized diet coke.

Obviously, a Diet version of something that is bad for you, does not automatically make is good for you. Obviously.

Do we really need a study to find this out?

Tastes like crap. Has weird chemicals. I've never seen the benefit of diet pop.

If you're going to drink that sort of thing, just drink the regular stuff and try to work it off.

My first time posting an image - am i doin it rite?

Also the quote is wrong, but w/e, you get the point.

Crystal Light on a regular basis and Snapple Iced Tea from time to time.

Getting off sodas was the best thing I did for myself. My wife was practically addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper, but since giving up Diet sodas entirely, her Fibromyalgia symptoms have virtually vanished. My theory is because the excess sodium was causing her to retain too much water and her spinal taps were showing too much water in the fluid.

Well my heart should explode at any moment, I've drunk at least a liter of Diet Coke a day for the past 15 years
