Oh wow, I hope those guys got/get banned, that's unacceptable. And then I wonder why my girlfriend is afraid of posting here.. :/

I posted this in the gaming side thread but I was thinking that the HUD indicators for the power weapons might be a perk. Not too intrusive gameplay wise but still changes up the experience.

Not to be mean but that sounds like a useless perk.

:lol Oh I know. I'd think that would be more of a perk that would be available right off the bat to help beginners. In my mind, all perks would modify the HUD in some way. Weapon timers and the like. Things that don't really (hopefully) impact the gameplay too extensively but would help beginners or the like.

Im gonna post this here also-

With Frankie talking about how much more visceral they are making the guns sound it has me hoping they do the same for effects. Some good particle, dust and blood effects can go a long way into making the guns look devastating and I really hope Halo 4 takes it up more than a notch.

Also, motion blur and DOF can go a long way when implement properly.. I hope they make it into both SP and MP but are handled in a subtle manner. I would love to hit a spartan with a rocket and have the explosion blow the dude back with some great blur effects on the body, etc.

I compiled just the Halo 4 footage into one video.

Awesome, thanks!

Anyone else share the opinion that Wraparound looks terribly boring aesthetically? Warhouse looks better but shares depressing similarities with Countdown.

Seriously, if 343i can just nail the maps then that's pretty much all I can ask for; I want maps as good as Lockout, Valhalla, Burial Mounds, Headlong, Zanzibar, Ascension, Sanctuary, High Ground and The Pit.
I was worried about this, but those who saw the map in person seemed blown away by its visuals, so Ill take their word until we get some direct feed screens.

Eh, I could see it working if it indicated whether or not the weapon was there at the time, or how long til it respawns, etc. Subtle "perks" like that could work well with Halo, at least in theory. I always speculated that jump height may be affected as some of those Spartans seemed to freaking fly.

As I said in the other thread, I know a lot of people are worried about the idea of armor effecting gameplay, and I don't blame them at all. That said, Im excited at the same time and I really can't wait to see what 343 did. I bet they were very careful after the fallout of AA's and Reach. I have faith.

Technical hosting issues. Currently waiting for the hosting's technical support to stop having technical issues so that I can ask them about my technical issues. =/

Try again, might be up now.

Still down.

Good luck on your hosting. I imagine it's like the stuff offered stateside, by which I mean they're generally spotty :p

The problem with making it tailored for beginners is that some might rely on it too much and never feel comfortable going into games without it on.

If all the power weapons are scooped up by the opponent or your team (and they should be in competitive games), you now have a useless perk.

You really have to download the direct video and listen to it with a great system. The part where they should the sound guys grabbing audio and then it cuts to gameplay. Holy shit. I just wanna play it man.

That's what I want to see if perks are in Halo 4. Don't change the amount of shots it takes to kill a player. That should a constant factor. So that means you can't have anything (besides Over Shield) that can change the amount of shields/life a spartan has or something that makes weapons/melee/grenades more powerful.
Slightly faster movement speed, higher jumps or weapon indicators as perks could work in a Halo game IMO.

finally able to watch the damn thing.

Wraparound reminds me of Heretic with Narrows' aesthetic. Need to see more, potentially promising.

Warhouse looks way, way, way too dense and dazzling but there are only a few quick shots in the video... Reminds me a bit of Condemned or Countdown which are both awful.

cautiously optimistic as with everyone else here I suppose.

I'm heading home, and will be able to post the next OT (WTF?!) in about an hour and a half. This thread didn't last three months, and we didn't even have much to talk about for most of that time. :lol

Yeah, it's hard to make any significant judgements at all.

I think we had our most non-caustic off topic-ness ever.

"It's about five years after he goes into cryosleep." - Kiki Wolfkill (Gametrailers interview, ~0:30)

Assumed as much, but this is the first semi-official statement that I'm aware of.
Yeah, it's cool to have that specific clarification.

I think things have calmed down a bit to post my reaction to the news.

Positives:
1. The BR is back. Kind of like how I didn't appreciate what Halo 3's campaign did right until after Reach's release, I didn't realize how much I missed the BR until it was gone. Glad it's back.
2. Jump height seems back to 2/3 levels, if not a little higher. Strafing is back too. Base movement speed looks pretty fast.
3. Bloom looks gone, but I'm holding on to the party streamers until we get confirmation.
4. I like the overall look to the mutiplayer. It all gels well. Then again, I don't think Halo games need to breach some sort of technical level for me to play it.
5. Seemingly no dual-wielding.

Negatives:
1. Sprint is back. I've discussed it at length here. To summarize: In its current Reach-ish form, Sprint causes more problems than it solves.
2. I swear I saw something that looks like a jetpack in the "Making of" video.
3. Side-by-side, I don't think the new armor looks better than the Mark VI. It does look better now that I've seen it within the game (kind of), but I'm still iffy on it. However, less so than I was yesterday.
4. It's a stupid thing to complain about, but the names of the maps could be better. Give me something like "Epitaph" and not "Wraparound."

Worries:
1. The story reason(s) for blue Spartans fighting red Spartans is contrived and messy when it's not needed. Think nanomachines to justify the change in the MC's armor.
2. The perk system rumor. Now, we don't know anything, and I can't definitely comment on it either way, but the idea of it does have me worried. See my earlier post about adding too many variables. If you're not going to commit the resources to tailor all the new abilities on a per map and gametype basis, it shouldn't be done.
3. If jetpack is back, does that mean fall damage has returned?
4. Frankie has said that the BR is not a replacement for single-shot weapons like the DMR. Here's hoping that whatever one-shot weapons are introduced, they don't have a 3x scope and instead have the traditional 2x. It's been discussed why 3x scope is detrimental to the gameplay.
5. This may sound stupid, but I hope 343's desire to put out a good-looking game doesn't come at the expense of big encounters in the campaign. I'm not a tech expert, but I think I heard from Bungie and others that one of the reasons that Halo 3 looked the way it did was so Bungie could deliver on the big battles. Can the Xbox handle a battle the size of the one outside the Cartographer on "The Ark" at 1280x720p with AA at a rock-solid 30 FPS? Can one of you GAFFers more knowledgeable help me out here? Of course, this could be a non-factor as 343 may not want battles as large as Halo 3.

Again, mixed reactions. Anybody who has any issue or thinks I've missed something, speak up. Laying it all out, most of my "problems" are coming from unknown factors. Hope we get those cleared up soon. I'm eager to learn more.

lol yea. Looks like so many places for my grenades to get stuck.

I was so incredibly excited when I watched the vidoc and saw the news. I Like the new design of the br and the maps. One thing I heard chilled me to my very core. It was the concept of perks or load outs. Obviously I haven't played the game nor have they said anything about it but when I think of what reach tried to do and what cod is I became very afraid of what halo might become. Please 343i prove me wrong I want to love this game so bad. Also random weapon timers? Can you please deny that rumor Frankie because that seems like a poor competitive multiplayer design choice. Now that i got that off my chest I loved the graphics and the audio as well. Can't wait to see more footage.

Probably super late to the party, but did anyone else notice the "Grenadier" text at 1:59? (It's in the upper-left hand corner.)

And what looks like the Halo 4 main menu in the upper-right hand corner at 2:02.

Purplish-looking weapon at 2:11.

True, I mean have you seen my posts on this thread? 30% SSX, 20% Halo, 40% off topic and 10% kinky sexual stuff. :p

I wasn't too impressed by the video. I thought the game was kind of ugly other than that Chief model, and those multiplayer maps looked.... well, let's just say I hope they're not complete and I hope the entire game isn't silver corridors. I expected my first look at the graphics to be a little more impressive. I know nothing is final but I wish they hadn't shown that stuff if it isn't ready. Kind of deflated my hype.

What's some links to good previews? I've read a couple that were just recounts of the vidoc.

Haha, you would say that.

Right? And the douches don't even see what's wrong with their statement. They're asserting that women have some inherent quality that makes them make shitty games. Idiots.

Kind of wish it was a bit longer, just for the sheer mystery factor. The more time that passes, the more things could be wildly different... But ah well, I'm sure the events of those five years will be sufficiently interesting.

The movement looks so fluid and agile, I'm fucking thrilled. The jumps are high without looking floaty. This is surely part of the new effort to make the player feel appropriately Spartan-like heavy.

Totally agree on the map names.

What if the BR is the new default weapon? ARs and DMRs are both available as pick-up weapons, maybe.

Devo I'm not sure it has been asked yet but in gameplay did it have invis and overshield as pickups?

Didn't see pickups or any sort of AAs in the short preview, unless I missed something. It was all such a barrage of new visual information that I could have missed some stuff. Okay back home now ready to actually talk about this stuff. Also editing my "write up" as we speak as I recall names, for the life of me I can't remember the name of the map that's not the Forerunner one (which is Wrap Around I believe).

I'm totally cool with Sprint. I loved Sprint in Reach but I also loved Reach without Sprint so I'm happy either way. I loved what Sprint did for map movement and figuring new jumps and I expect the same for Halo 4. The map exploration with Sprint is making me giddy. Now, let's just hope I don't have to get rid of Sprint so that I can do some other abilities. Unless it's to double jump! I still think Double Jumping would be bad ass and I would love to try it out in a Halo game.

Frankie clarifies "perks".

There aren't "perks" in the game. And classic Halo is still there. But there are things we will be rolling out soon to put all of this discussion in a much better perspective and I suspect calm frayed nerves.

Stupid journalists.

So Frankie/David, was HaloGaf's response to the news today about what you'd expect? Did you expect us to complain more/less? Seems most everyone is hyped but what % do you chalk up to the new car smell/alternative to Reach as opposed to actually liking what we saw?

How did others communities react in comparison to the way you thought they would?

I haven't seen any "we're in trouble" articles out there... seems most everyone is pumped.

Ready for the next drop...

3/7/12? :)

So sexism made its way into my Halo shit too. I'm taking a break from GAF after I post this write up. I can't with the bullshit much longer.

Trusty Halo-agnostics Eurogamer rolled out a headline that was something like "Halo 4 perks introduced".

Hit-baiting right here:

Halo 4's newly unveiled multiplayer perks - which, for the first time in a Halo game will have an impact on the gameplay - aren't a result of 343 Industries chasing Call of Duty and Battlefield, the studio has said.

That's the article's opening line.

Purplish-looking weapon at 2:11.

Yup, and Jetpack?

Frankie clarifies "perks".

Stupid "journalists".

Fixed.

I hate that we gravitate to the word perks so quickly. Because then all I hear is, "Halo has perks? But how is it going to use Ninja and Extreme Conditioning?!?!?!?" Or "Halo has Perks, lolz way to go 343." When no one knows a god damn thing.
