Media Create Sales: Week 11 {2012.03.12 - 2012.03.18}

Kid Icarus is going to be interesting. It could be another evergreen monster seller that builds over time or it could end up being completely rejected by the Japanese audience. I honestly have no clue which way it's going to go.

I'm cautiously excited for it on a personal level because of Sakurai's involvement and from what I'm reading in early previews but that's never been an indication of mass audience approval. In fact, the masses tend to like stuff I don't and vice versa so that probably means Kid Icarus is going to flop just because I think I'm going to like it. =)

Let's wait for MC Top 50, but looking at this chart, I'd say sales are really low.

And even i am moderately surprised
Kid Icarus might exceed Nintendo's initial expectations (whatever they were) as the demand for it is increasing the last days and wholesalers face supply problems.

what is the source on this? Sinobi? Can't view from work.

Who is providing the wholesaler commentary?

I'm extremely curious about Kid Icarus next week. As others have said, the numbers could seriously go either way on this one. None of my students know what the hell it is, but that doesn't really mean much.

Gonna wander around this weekend and take a look at all the big shops to see how well it's selling locally at least.

At what point can we finally conclude that there is no sustainable market for a $250 portable game system?

Before the Vita released all we heard was how amazing the Vita's launch line up was compared to the 3DS's, yet it has sold at a slower pace than the 3DS did in both territories thus far. When the sales were revealed to be mediocre then all of the sudden the launch line up wasn't good enough to push the system.

I do plan on buying a Vita but I am going to wait until it sees a similar price point as the current 3DS price. I think I would dabble in the Vita at $180 or less. But right now I don't care what games come to the platform because it doesn't warrant the current price tag.

I think a lot people feel the same way I do. Pure game systems, when divided between portable and home, will always have a similar ceiling of what the general market is willing to pay for one.

Really surprised that 3DS hardware decreased again. Will be interesting over the next two weeks numbers to see just how much all these new bundles, plus new color, and two big games affect hardware sales.

Six years ago.

You would think so wouldn't you? Both Sony and Nintendo, for some strange reason, chose to ignore this valuable lesson.

I can see how Nintendo may have decided to foolishly gamble that a predecessor to their most successful hardware could do well above 200. But Sony already knew from first hand experience that it wouldn't go over well.

Why choose to do it again?

Although 250 is definitely pushing limits, I think the 3DS would have been sustainable at 200. It's difficult to really know exactly how much the price drop affected sales since the system didn't truly become successful until November. IIRC, sales increased marginally at best due to the price drop alone. It's hard to imagine the thing selling anywhere near as well as it is now at 250, even with the current roster, but it seems to me that the 170 price tag was executed to help drive home the notion that *everyone* should own one of these things. And Nintendo was willing to take some losses to make that happen. For $30 more? I think it would've done pretty well. The power of Mario is not one to be taken lightly.

Before price drop it was wavering between 20-30k iirc and after the drop It only went below 50k once (down to 49k) the numbers were still up and down a bit week to week but the price drop had a very noticeable difference.

[3DS] Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D # <ADV> (Konami) {2012.03.08} (¥5.980) - 9.027 / 47.401 (-76%)

[PS3] Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition # <ADV> (Konami) {2011.11.10} (¥4.980) - 12.721 / 52.464 (-68%)
[PS3] Metal Gear Solid HD Edition (Konami) - 13.534 / 72.398

The HD Edition data is from Famitsu charts, since it charted 22nd for Media Create in the second week, so no data.

EDIT:And according to some I know who have translated that Sinobi bit about KH3D, it seems it says that it has less preorders than the precedent ones, but female audience could bring on some legs. Now, I don't think they're also talking about Kh Re:coded as a precedent, but still...first not good third party result on 3DS?

MGS did "right" I think.
I would like to see a dedicated portable game on 3ds, later in its lifetime.

About KH: I was just jokin'! :D
But preorders ARE low, we'll see how it will perform.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Eh, I'd love to see another one, but it seems Kojima, after PW, isn't so ready again for an important MGS for handled.

About KH, I thank extralite here ( as well as an user on another forum ) for the REAL translation.

Beating out the competition by a large margin at pre-orders, the new KH releases next week.
Thanks to this release which has a strong following among females, the 3DS user base should further be broadened and sales for future releases like Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Collection also be affected.
358/2 Days released for DS in 2009 sold 530 000 copies and Re:coded, which was released in 2010, sold 270 000 copies.

Is anyone aware of how hard nintendo is pushing the Kid Icarus in Japan. It's getting an unusually high amount of promotion here in the US for a nintendo game that isn't Metroid/Mario/Zelda/Smash/Pokemon.

This will be a good litmus test to see how popular a more niche genre of game can be when it gets high production values/budget and a proper push from a huge publisher.

Nothing too surprising, slower week, I guessed Vita would finally hit sub 10k numbers this week, mark my words it's coming! But I only hope that brings with it more market friendly prices (so I can finally pick one up)

Kinda expected Pokemon to have higher numbers, however how far the DS has slowed down it's not too surprising.

Vita doing so bad depresses me for a number of reasons, something I thought would never happen (being depressed about it).

I think its like one of those cases where you're pretending to laugh and have fun when you're being made fun of, but deep down ur hurt inside.

I think they just got what they deserved, or is there any significant support from Sony in Japan? basically they thought, hey we are going for the big buck and concentrate on western games and the far bigger western market, meanwhile you can do what you want and release your Monster Hunters and stuff and fill our bags with royalties... ;)

Selling out a 200K shipment would be very impressive for what essentially amounts to a new IP in terms of customer recognition, and especially so given that it is in a niche genre.

The collection and local/online multi aspect should keep it out of the used market relatively well, and ensure a second shipment has a chance of being big too!

Everyone should be overjoyed to see nintendo rewarded for releasing new Hardcore games in genre's they haven't focused on in a good while. It will encourage them to take more risks in the future and diversify their catalog. If the thing bombs then nintendo will rightfully stick to their guns, and go with the proven sellers.

It didn't really decrease - when people get excited about new colors bundles bringing new sales they tend to forget that those sales are at least partially purchases that would have been made few weeks earlier but then someone decided to wait for colour he likes.

01./00. [NDS] Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition <SLG> (Pokemon Co.) {2012.03.17} (¥5.800) - 172.027 / NEW

Great opening though it will have a much shorter tail than Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue / Red Rescue Team and Pokémon Ranger.

[NDS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team - 123,556
[GBA] Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team - 112,898
[NDS] Pokémon Ranger - 193,337

02./00. [PSP] Shining Blade <RPG> (Sega) {2012.03.15} (¥6.279) - 122.257 / NEW

A little bit better than the last title released on PSP too. Since I don't know how much the Sega Mega Drive games sold I can't say if this new Shining Blade has made the best debut or if it is poised to become the best selling title of its franchise. At least it has the best numbers since the PS2 era.

[PS2] Shining Tears - 65,873
[PS2] Shining Force Neo - 63,000
[PS2] Shining Force EXA - 72,306
[PS2] Shining Wind - 78,030
[PSP] Shining Hearts - 106,733

14./00. [PS3] Winning Post 7 2012 <SLG> (Koei Tecmo) {2012.03.15} (¥7.560) - 11.524 / NEW

[PS3] Winning Post 7 Maximum 2008 - 5,400 (Famitsu)
[PS3] Winning Post World - 13,000
[PS3] Winning Post 2010 - 5,880 (Famitsu)
[PS3] Winning Post 7 2010 - 9,714

[3DS] Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance # <RPG> (Square Enix) (¥6.090)

[NDS] Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (Square Enix) - 295,205 (Released on Saturday so only two days of sales)

Will Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance debut in the middle of these two? At this time I see that it could be anything from 250k to 350k.

[PSP] Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (Square Enix) - 445,962

350 opening would be a very good start, in my opinion.
I don't know if the "hints" we have up to now could lead into such a great result, though.

@Chris1964: what are your feelings about this title?

Comgnet can never be used for a precise forecast but can often give you an idea, it did pretty accurately predict ff132 was gonna bomba

Good for KI if it's really taking off, then. Perhaps the Sakurai connection and the increased visibility that Nintendo is giving the title will pay off. 3DS software seems to be selling well right now across the board and it seems the folks who have bought the system are spending money on games. KI should benefit from this.

Regarding 3D, I would be surprised and disappointed if the title does not break 400k. (And most likely, so would Square!) It's seemingly bigger, longer and more expensively produced than either of the DS titles and it's getting plenty of press. There's still a week left until launch so it will be interesting to see what happens between now and then.

So 300k LTD for Revelaitons ? That seems a bit low, hopefully a BEST version will be able to revive its sales and pull it up.

KH3D should do BbS numbers, I think. They're essentially the same type of game, both on fairly popular platforms.

Of course the 3DS has a smaller install base, but it might drive hardware adoption at the same time, so...

The problem I have with this title is that the overperformance of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D makes its sales look bad.

I'm not convinced KH will do 400k out of the gate, comgnet is suggesting preorders aren't vast (though they are still pretty ok), i'm not surprised though it is launching to a vastly smaller userbase than either bbs or days did but the 3ds userbase is growing fast so it should hopefully have pretty good legs

Well, we saw last week the comparison between the two: Revelation could end with similar legs, looking at the actual data.
Mercenaries started with 54K and its LTD was around 153K, Revelations could easily double Mercs results.
To me 300K is a good result for the first real iteration on portable systems.

It does seem weak for a system with an installed base over 5 million. I mean, this wasn't some spin off throw away game, but a console quality RE title.

First time in a Japanese sales thread, huh?

If there was a ps2 version, it would have charted higher than the 360 version
ME2 did start higher on X360 than PS3, but that was a late port.

I didn't know! Thanks for the hint!
Well, if they shipped around 200K and it's going sold our, in my opinion would be a very solid result!

Oh snap. 200k shipment running low on stock? So somewhere between a 160-180k first week? That'd be bitchin. I was thinking it'd be closer to 100k!

It does seem weak for a system with an installed base over 5 million. I mean, this wasn't some spin off throw away game, but a console quality RE title.

Maybe hand held gamers don't want Console like experiences....could explain why the Vita isn't lighting up the charts..
