Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man
last few photos from the Q1 thread.
Got myself a film scanner and I've been working on scanning the negatives from a B&W film class I took several years back.

Went for a walk with my fiance and her friend.

Thank you! :-)

While the two pictures below are not technically impressive, I would like to share with all of you one of the most beautiful landscapes I've seen in my life (so far!):

Man, nice photos from everyone! My son showing a smile after eating his popsicle. The first thought I had when I saw this was, "WHY SO SERIOUS?!"

Spring has sprung show us what you got.

@stalfos - what film scanner did you get?

I got the Epson Perfection V500. So far I'm liking it and I'm happy with the results I'm getting, it does take a while to scan but I think that's the case for most scanners. I was also looking at the Canoscan 9000f but it seems like its not available anymore.

One of the main reasons I got the scanner is so I can archive some old family photos that are on slides. I also want to start occasionally shooting some film again since I enjoy it, but I might just get it developed at a lab instead of trying to find somewhere to do it myself.

So those of you who do this for a living, what's the best way to get clients esrly on? I only really got into photography seven months ago and i don't have a big portfolio, i really need to get at least a couple of events under my belt but how? Do i offer doing weddings or a social event for free? How did you guys get started?

very cool. Good luck with that. While researching to find myself a scanner i looked at the epsons, they seem to scan large format very well they dont seem to scan medium format very well for some reason. It's definitely fun and rewarding to do your own scanning imo.

Nice work so far everyone!

Specially liking Avocado and Pringles, maybe im just a sucker for black and white, but i find both very compelling.

Me with my Fuji GX 617. Was finally able to get a decent shot of myself with my setup. Not used to being in front of the camera.

I don't do portraits or weddings for a living, but i have made some business from portrait shoots(thats an awesome landscape! do you do weddings? ...) . Make yourself a portfolio of your best shots, be very selective and be your own worst critic. Make it at least 8x10. Even though the majority of people don't print their photos anymore, there is still something very compelling about holding a nice quality print in your hand instead of looking at it on their uncalibrated typically god awful screen. Advertise, advertise and do some more advertising. From a nice business card to your emails everything is advertising. You literally have to win their hearts and minds because photography is not a need, its a luxury item to have. I would absolutely not recommend doing anything for free, unless you really really expect to get paid later for it. Working for free sets up the expectation that your work for free and or that you don't value your time. Lastly don't hold their photos hostage, this is more of a personal pet peeve, but it drives me nuts seeing photographers expecting people to pay them often times outrageous fees for prints, after already charging them a sitting fee or event fee. The way i do my portraits is i charge $75/hr (more than reasonable in my experience, most people are suprised as the best portrait photographers charge a lot more) and then i give them a disc with the best photos post processed and they have my permission to print them wherever they would like. I also offer prints but at more reasonable prices. Thats all i can think of for now, hope that helps.

This little guy here is my meager contribution to this thread. I think it came out alright considering it was taken with a 10 year old digital camera.

There are people out there who have either a Canon 5D Mark III or Nikon D800 and cannot produce a picture like this. It depends who is behind the camera. Personally, I like it and nice use of black and white.

So my gear got stolen a little over a month ago and was without any type camera for a couple of weeks. Then a smartphone came into my possession with a 5MP camera. Been getting by with this for now...

Being a bit of a gearhead I was very much turned off by the oversharpening of the software from the camera, the lens is obviously misaligned (blurriness in the upper left of the frame is strong) and the general quality of my former Rebel XT and Zeiss lens isn't there. But the experience is humbling me a bit. The best camera truly is the one you have on you. I'm just happy I can go back to expressing myself via photography.

Ah, I have been neglecting my photo taking (well I have been taking pictures of my kid) most of which are not very interesting.

I do love this one though, even though the AF failed a bit.

Another question.

When you do a session or event or whatever how many pics do you give to your clients? Let's say in a two hour session, how many pics is the standard and do you process all of them?

Man, I need to start taking more pics again. Great work in here as always.

My fotki membership expired. Wondering if I should switch to a photo site with a better community. Looking for something not too expensive. Smugmug looks good but I think its a little more expensive than I'm looking for. Flickr still good? Picasa? Any other suggestions?

For models I usually do 2 per look. I promise 5-6 edits. Usually I edit a few extra, but I don't promise it up front. I don't release any unedited work into the wild :p

That's about standard for what I shoot.

Thought you got the lumia? The camera on it is pretty good imo.

I don't normally do this but, i'm doing a contest, help me name this photo and you can win a free print of it. It's a facebook contest, which requires just a little app permissions.

I'm thinking of doing a small contest on my facebook page, something like getting to x number of likes and giving away a free casual session or something, good idea?

as long as you do it with an app. Facebook's gone nazi on their contest rules.

Trying to get a clear shot of the cells of an orange. Really tough to grab focus this close.

Even tougher not to eat it.
