I smell another 599 US DOLLAR meltdown...

That will SO not be cheap!

Well. If they can get the price down by digging deep into the MS war chest. Then it could be game over for Sony. At least in non JPN locations.

Isn't Microsoft thew one that wants the "Does it all" box for the living room?

I think they will build a box that does so much that you would say "oh and it plays games!" when you show it off to someone...

Would go something like this:

"You can watch tv, record it, cut videos, listen to music, radio, record it, cut the audio clips, look at images and edit them, play blu rays, organise your music/image/video library, call friends, make an ass out of yourself with star wars kinect 2: waggle to the max!... OH and it plays games!"

re: trolls

I'm just going to bide my time. Something tells me that some of them aren't going to be laughing by the end of this generation. ;)

A console world divided by Nintendo and Microsoft would be fascinating, and perhaps a bit sad. My hunch is that it'd be east-vs-west.

I was fine with the amicable split. Nintendo has enough of their own properties that are being overlooked (F-Zero, Advance Wars, Mother, Star Tropics, Detective Club, etc, etc) the last thing I'd want is them to also taking stewardship over Rare's cheap knockoffs.

Considering how much effort was put in DKCR, I'd take Nintendo's shot at Banjo-Kazooie over Nuts & Bolts.

Let them dream. We know we are betting on the right horse with our modest expectations!

I FULLY expect the troll invasion on E3 saying "HAHA the multiplat titels look exactly like xbox 360 and ps3! Its just on par you suckers!!!" and of course they would totally ignore anything from Nintendo that looks better than xbox 360/ps3 or claim that it would TOTALLY be doable without sacrifices on PS360!

That will happen on E3 no matter what will be shown and how good it looks!

Trolls are gonna troll. You cant stop it...

Please mark this post to slap in every trolls face come E3. So they can see we predicted their movements 2 month ahead of time ;)

Oh yeah. All (most) of us have known that since last E3. The "PS360 games look worse than PS360 games" will be one of the classic moments in GAF history.

These threads within a single core, can they execute instructions from different processes? Or is the core and all it's thread dedicated to a single running process, and the threads are used to process the instructions of the process faster?
The difference between a thread and a process is not really well defined when it comes to execution (the distinction is made on the level of the operating system, not the processor itself), for a processor they are mostly the same thing. The two different threads running on a CPU can have a completely different context.

The issue also is those same people think the Nintendo fan's realistic expectations are still unrealistic. According to them you'd think Nintendo fans are expecting Wii U to be the most powerful console next gen with tons of support.

Wait, hold up. It wont be?

MS would need a handheld to get any sort of userbase in Japan. The console market is shrinking in Japan.

Yeah. I guess so. To be honest. From a sales point of view. I can see MS not really bothering with JPN the next go around. They tried with the Xbox360 but it didn't really get them anywhere.

Nintendo really should consider assigning their forgotten franshises exclusively to some of their development teams.

Have a team dedicated to F-Zero, have a team dedicated to Advance Wars, have a team dedicated to Mario, etc.

This way, the franschises will always have people working on them, but if a single person wants to do something new, they can switch between teams. They sort of do this already with Zelda, Metriod, and Smash Bros, but I want to see it more as an organizational structure.

i'm actually really happy rare split from nintendo since it gave us viva pinata, their greatest game series. though rc pro am is close.

Thanks for the help. So it all depends on how the OS handles it's execution schedule.

I would be really interested in the OS design for these new systems, if we ever do find out about them..

I remember reading somewhere that Viva Pinata's concept was planned during the days of the Gamecube, don't quote me on that though.

I will agree that Viva Pinata was the best thing to happen after the buyout, such a nice series.

Its funny how we, "Nintendrones", or "Ninthings", or "NTards" called Nintendo fans have mostly a fairly reasonable expectation on hardware AND 3rd party support and the other groups have, by far, the most outlandish expectations you could have...

It's because a lot of us "kiddy gamers" have been around for quite a while. We've been there, done that, learned the lessons. We've seen the mountaintop, and we've been down in the gutter. Hell, lot of us have gaming cartridges older than a lot of them. :)

OoO and SMT, aren't they two different things?

A core can't both be OoO and SMT, right?

No it can have both, but it doesn't improve things that much. Both try to achieve the same: prevent PUs from idle. For example (simplified): you've got two integer units X and Y and the following operation A+B+C+D.

In order would go:

1. A + B (=AB)
2. AB + C (=ABC)
3. ABC + D

It would take 3 steps and use only unit, the other would be idle.

OoO:

1. X:A + B, Y:C + D
2. X:AB + CD

Now it takes only steps and Y would only idle once.

SMT+IO:
Thread 1: A+B+C+D
Thread 2: E+F+G+H

1. X:A + B (=AB), Y: E + F (=EF)
2. X:AB + C (=ABC), Y: EF + G (=EFG)
3. X:ABC + D, Y: EFG + H

SMT+OoO:
1. X:A + B, Y: E + F
2. X:C + D, Y: G + H
3. X:AB + CD, Y: EF + GH

So in this case IO and OoO would require the same steps. I hope this helps a bit.

I think they'll stop laughing when we know what will be in the Xbox720/PS4 ;)

This "splitting the marked" scenario could really happen. All Japanese devs that struggled with Sony this gen may be jumping ship to BigN and the western developers will stick with Microsoft. The touchscreen on a otherwise regular controller is just way too innovative for them to come up with a good use for it ;)

This gens excuse that the Wiimote is too different from regular controls wont work next gen though! And if someone dares to say it (Hi Kojima, how are ye doing, old dawg...) then they are just super lazy or highly incompatible with innovation!

Wait, hold up. It wont be?

Crap. Should have spoiler'd that.

OH sweet sweet bbbbbuuuurrrrrrnnnnnnn. I just hope for something as awesome during this years E3.

For some reason I don't see something of that level happening this time.

It's because a lot of us "kiddy gamers" have been around for quite a while. We've been there, done that, learned the lessons. We've seen the mountaintop, and we've been down in the gutter. Hell, lot of us have gaming cartridges older than a lot of them. :)

LOL. The dust on some of those cartridges might be older than them too.

A new IP would nice from Nintendo considering I can't remember one since...Pikmin? Am I wrong guys?

Why would they need a new IP when they can endlessly milk the existing ones. I think it's too risky for them. Ninty are all about Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Pikmin. And really, for the most part. It's all they need.

pikmin is a relatively small ip from nintendo. it shouldn't even be in the same sentence as mario & zelda.

I get in the shower at the end of page 389, get out and we're on page 391.

I put my iPad in a gallon-size Ziploc bag and then hang it in the shower so that I can surf GAF while I'm washing-up.

You know.. just in case Wii U news breaks in that time frame. Don't wanna miss it!

I'd be content if they just stopped neglecting the ones they have. Nintendo already has an entire universe of characters and settings at its disposal.

steel diver, wii ____, pushmo, dillons, etc.
Seriously. People that think Nintendo hasn't been making new IPs this past 6 years are just willfully ignorant.
They've been making a lot of great stuf lately, esecially.
Also, I'd love a sequel to Dillion's on the Wii U.

When you say powerful apps. Are you talking about things like word processors and spreadsheets or are you talking about multimedia apps like easy to use video editors and music creation programs.

the whole shebang.

Technically, making an even more guarded appstore than the Windows 8 one.

PC makers know their days are counted, and will rely on tablets and future designs as well as business needs.

The consummer does not mind being heavily sheppered, it just needs a good excuse to accept it.

It worked for Apple, and XBOX is MS best chance at it.

So yeah, I'm talking light work, photo/video editing etc... enough to justify not owning a regular PC with MS adding some "gaming" power to get papa-gamer to justify getting an XBOX rather than a PC.

I'm not very good with tech specs and technology knowledge, so at first I thought these were cheat codes...

They constantly keep it fresh with new additions and variations. Sure that may be difficult with zelda, but Mario games vary ALOT.

Mario 64 as the first 3D version.

Mario Sunshine with the Water Gun

The Galaxy games with the Planets.

Cant wait for WiiUs 3D Mario!

I think this is dangerous thinking.

Every single time someone says all they need are Nintendo franchises, the answer is always, "Then why was GameCube #3 in sales?".

Then people will say "Oh because it didn't have DVD, no online, and the purple lunchbox appearance hurt its image." And the reply to this is always "The Wii had no DVD, crappy online, and the Wii name created tons of penis and pee jokes, and was more embarrassing than the purple lunchbox look of GameCube." And yet it ended up becoming one of the most successful consoles in history.

Now yes, Nintendo might be profitable with only Nintendo franchises. But their market share after NES dropped for SNES. Their market share dropped from SNES to N64. Their market share dropped drastically from N64 to GameCube. Their marketshare went wayyy wayyy wayyy up for the Wii. And now analysts expecting Wii U to drop drastically in marketshare from the Wii.

Case in point: Nintendo cares about marketshare just as much as profit. Nintendo franchises don't increase market share because Nintendo fans will buy anything Nintendo puts out.

It's the people who aren't fans of Mario and Zelda who increase or decrease Nintendo's marketshare. Nintendo needs more to appeal to those people.

Majority of casual gamers who bought Wii didn't care about Mario or Zelda. If they did, they would have bought a GameCube the previous generation.

Wii Sports was a new IP and it made the Wii the success it is today.

Indeed. They have the most loved and recognised IP in the industry. They just need to farm it out to other devs with strong direction and guidance from Nintendo to produce the goods.

I'm also hoping that the tablet will allow for more character and content creation by users in game environments. My fingers are crossed.

I think there needs to be a list with years listed that can be posted whenever anyone tries to make the claim Nintendo needs new IPs or hasn't made any. It's getting really tired now.

I know and agree with what you're saying but I was replying to wether Nintendo needs new IP's.

They desperately need a good spectrum of quality 3rd parties to make WiiU a success. It needs games like Skyrim 2, Crysis 3 and COD.
