The problem with Sony leaving the portable space and a theoretical Nintendo only portable future is that we gamers would be loosing some great games. No First Party Sony franchise is going to appear on a Nintedo portable so we loose out on Hot Shots Golf, Gran Turismo, God of War, Patapon, Loco Roco, MLB the Show, Uncharted and all the rest.

Our friend who wants a one handheld future may not care about such titles but I sure as heck do. Of course this is a MC thread and it isn't about what I want it's about what Japan wants.

Hot Shots Golf and Uncharted are already out. How long before God Of War and Gran Turismo? Probably 2 years. Patapon and Loco Roco are not enough to justify a console existence. Other than Gravity Daze, I don't believe Sony first parties have what it takes to create worthwhile games in a timely fashion anymore. Every potential new games rest on third party developers which could develop on 3DS instead. Thus the Vita is not really needed in the first place.

Obviously Sony.

Can you please explain the Japanese PSVITA Japanese launch then because from outside looking in it seems to me that Sony basically launched a brand new system with software that doesn't cater to the Japanese customers.
There is a difference between having a plan and that plan not going as first hoped.

The Vita did have games that cater to the japanese customers.

If by good you mean less than half the number its predecessor had done by this point in life then yeah its doing good
Nah. Not a perfect comparison with PS3's worldwide launches being closer together, but at this point PS2 hardware is about 50% ahead of PS3 hardware.

As a suggestion to Garaph, since tables were changed, maybe the hardware LTD info could be added on the weeklyoverview, if it's not too resource intensive -- with a checkbox maybe, if it gets too crowded.
Yeah, I probably should make it just give the LTDs on the weekly overview pages. And yeah, crowding the view was a main reason I didn't do so the last time I made some changes to it.

As is when I want a hardware LTD for a specific time I just usually use the hardware sales line generator, pick a system and give "launch" as the date, put a sufficiently high number of weeks, and take the second HTML option. I think I never bothered to make pages specifically with hardware history because it's so easy to create such a thing with the existing hardware sales line generator, but it's still not very friendly to require a person to go through those steps each time.

Still on Garaph, JoshuaJSlone, as I did this, I noticed WonderSwan Color release date on HardwareInfo is wrong. It should be 2000-12-09.
Thanks, changed now.

Real question: Is the Rayman origin franchise doing better in Japan than in the States?
I've only got one Rayman game in the Garaph database. If they're released in Japan they're not making even the yearly Top 500 or Top 1000 lists. The only reason Raving Rabbids is in is because Famitsu gave data for pretty much EVERYTHING PS3/Wii the first few months.

Sony Japan hoped to cater to the Monster Hunter fanbase. Sadly for them, there is no exclusive MH coming for Vita anytime soon.

I don't know what's most surprising, Vita numbers, KH bomba, or seeing BurntPork back.

Think i'll go with BP.

KH is surprising, but not unexpected, i mean, it's a series that:

1) Has been in somewhat of a decline lately
2) Too many spin-offs
3) Spread too thin around different hardware

It's like S-E wants to make it extremely difficult for new people to join in on the series, and at the same time their plans to keep people interested in the games/story is failing.

Too bad, as i liked KH I&II (the only ones i played lol)

That's a whole lot of nothing.

What really pissed me off is how Sony wasn't able to turn the Little Big Planet Franchise in a mega-hit series. The first game had all the aces to become such a powerful new IP, especially because of its casual and hardcore combined appeal. Well, on paper it looked like that back when the first game was announced and it could have become a new Mario in my opinion, but Sony wasn't able to capitalize on it.

LittleBigPlanet isn't even remotely accessible, to be fair.

Or maybe Sony tried to put all their eggs in the Uncharted basket but could never quite breakthrough past their own core fanbase.

Nice fast editing.

I agree anyway. This is the main difference between LBP and Marios. But the potential was there. Much more than any Uncharted or Resistance game.

I've tried to avoid reading too much into these numbers, and to void getting too caught up in the hype around such low figures, but it's quite difficult.

I am starting to become genuinely worried. The system seemed to get off to a sluggish start and it's only plummeting downhill hard from there.

It's a shame because I love the system. I wish I could play ALL my games on it. But I don't see what's happening to change the Vita's fortunes. I don't know what ace cards it can even play to stimulate it's own sales at this point.

Looking at the software figures week after week for Japan, I see the Galapagos effect getting stronger and stronger. This week's top seller... huh? Yet well-received big franchises like Kid Icarus and KH are only doing so-so on the most rapidly growing platform in the region...
Super Robot Wars is a big franchise, regardless of whether you've heard of it or not.

don't worry, 5k is the next break point

is that even possible?

there was one graph with many consoles' LTDs aligned where VITA was getting closer to performing worse than dreamcast and/or Gamecube. was it donny's? It would be nice to see an update of that graph.

Next "milestone" I'm looking at is PSP and Vita combining to do less than 20K. Going below that on a consistent basis would tell me all I need to know about how much Sony gives a shit about it's handheld performance in Japan.

garaph uses the 2-in-1 combined weeks from Famitsu at Golden Week and Obon holidays.

New releases today are completely insignificant, this week could be even lower in preparation of holidays.

I'd say we haven't seen the worst yet!

Actually he's right: there was nothing for those weeks, combined or separate. I was wondering how that could've slipped, and upon research see we talked about it a little a couple years back. There was some discrepancy between sources for those weeks, you said it seemed like the site and magazine must've had some different numbers, and it would be cleared up when we got half-year hardware totals. So I left them blank for the time being, and forgot to ever come back. I've now filled them in with what Game Data Museum has listed.

Might give it a small one week bump but i dont see people running out in droves to buy vitas for a remake of a niche rpg

Persona is not a niche RPG anymore. The original Persona 4 release and budget release are close to 400k by now.

But your point still stands.

If I understand it correctly, the gamecube had sold approximately 300k more consoles than Vita at the 16th or 17th week.

and gamecube was dissed by 3rd parties cause it sold badly... -_-

I wonder what would be the reaction in a higher-up business meeting when someone says " Hey! let us do a VITA game! ".. I guess everyone would laugh out loud.

The thing is, Sony would be dumb to price cut or do anything drastic right now. Doing what Nintendo did, and drop the price when their ace games were announced and in the hopper would be the best bet.

You're not going to get people to buy Vitas with that launch lineup at any price. IMO, the real crime here was launching Vita with no apparent plan or roadmap. That was Nintendo's mistake with the 3DS, the price was less than half of the issue IMO. Sony failing to learn from the mistakes of their competitors is not exactly new territory, but you'd hope for the longevity of the company they would learn eventually.

I wonder what would be the reaction in a higher-up business meeting when someone says " Hey! let us do a VITA game! ".. I guess everyone would laugh out loud.

This would be the other problem. With no system selling IP, Vita is sunk without third parties. FFS, announce Madden and CoD now just to start moving some hardware.

Oh sorry i'd heard the 200k number mentioned, but yeah the point is the same, i'm inclined to believe it will actually sell pretty well (well for a vita game) and not just to typical persona fans simply because of the lack of big games on vita

I doubt very much that any vita games at all have been green-lit this year

The really interesting thing about this graph, to me, is that it's a visual demonstration of the point Road made earlier that was briefly discussed (i.e. Vita only having just doubled its first week). Vita is the second highest launch (of 6) on this graph, yet its post-launch sales have been so low that it is now the fifth highest (of 6) after ~18 weeks. The system shot off well at the start, but has just had almost no staying power after the hype of initial buyers. Reminds of PS3 in the U.S., where the console was selling for > $1000 from launch until shortly before Christmas as some people just *had* to have it. Then after Christmas, new shipments came in, and they just sat on shelves. *insert Penny-Arcade comic* In PS3's case, it always had big hits coming (e.g. MGS4, GT5), but it just wasn't enough to sustain more "normal" demand at that price (much less the ridiculous levels of demand before that first Christmas).

This would be the other problem. With no system selling IP, Vita is sunk without third parties. FFS, announce Madden and CoD now just to start moving some hardware.
If two 'exclusive' GTAs couldn't substantially move hardware for the PSP, a Call of Duty port won't do anything for the Vita.

It doesn't have legacy franchises like Nintendo either. Sony needs something new to entice people to buy the Vita.

It should not be that tragic to fail once in a while on a gamecube level.

What nintendo did was do their thing as long as they could until the next gen arrived but in the mean time they made a couple of 3rd party efforts like FF: Crystal Chronicles and Tales of Symphonia that helped the console stay there and of course it had phenomenal 1st party exclusives.

Why won't sony replicate that? throw all first party stuff at vita and see if anything sticks to the wall and have a couple of 3rd party games that could have some mild appeal.

What the fuck ar they waiting for? o.k you failed but have some selfrespect and show you care sony.

Both those week were affected by the price drop announcement though. I seriously doubt the Vita will drop that low soon. The odd release it gets every few weeks will keep it "stable" for a while I guess.

Stable? Vita's not stable by any stretch of the imagination. And with no big releases anytime soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit the 5k mark soon enough.

Yikes, them Vita sales aren't pretty. I'm not sure a price cut is in the cards and I don't believe Monster Hunter alone would be enough to dig it out of that ditch. So, what would it take to salvage it at this point?

I don't think they'll be dropping the price within a year on the market. It's kind of bewildering that they didn't create quality handheld franchises, or learn anything from the PSP fiasco. You just cannot take third-parties for granted, and now they're paying the price for it. I also can't believe their top-tier first-party studios refuse to develop for the Vita, I mean, wth?

Huh, seriously?

Anyways, curious to see how Fire Emblem: Awakening's going to sell (by the way, would anyone happen to have Shadow Dragon and New Mystery of the Emblem week numbers?).

Stable? Vita's not stable by any stretch of the imagination. And with no big releases anytime soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit the 5k mark soon enough.
It has been around 10k for 7 weeks in a row now. The sales could go lower indeed, but it is definitely nothing wrong with saying that the Vita sales have been stable in the last ~2 months.

I think he is referring to the misunderstood quote from Naughty Dog. They never said that they wouldnt work on Vita.

Golden week should at least hold it off from dropping that low this month, i can see may being brutal though

What the fuck ar they waiting for? o.k you failed but have some selfrespect and show you care sony.

maybe they are waiting for E3 to announce something

I see your point. I'd call it more, flatlining than stable though. :p

Why? They need people to know what's coming as soon as possible to drum up interest in the system, not in 2 months time. And they better announce ALOT of stuff at E3 otherwise they're in big trouble. Plus, Sony aren't exactly known to keep quiet about new titles, Nintendo they are not.

This is the saddest thing corprate(sp) wise in a long ass time.

i mean 8,400? wtf man. i mean come on, you mean to tell me Sony's hope for Vita was Monhun Kitties in the east and COD Portable in the west? that not a fucking business plan for shit.

i mean the PSP - you had a lot of promise with it. but everybody in the west hated it because it didnt had a second stick. Japan was iffy about it till the Monhun Kitties came out and then they realized they could do lots of stuff with it. Sony thought that if we get new monhun kitties and get that COD audiance Vita will sells.

no.

in fact despite all of the stuff vita had going for it - the charater flaw is the thing that made PSP seem diffrent. even though it was a failure - the umd could have been upgraded. they didnt really need a second back...touch thingy. vita is a good simple design marred by having the wrong type of tech in place. 3g when we have 4glte in the states, cards instead of discs, memory that cost too much... this isnt including the biggest problem - 15 studios...but a lack of a world changing hit. they have the people - but not the will nor the mindshare as apple (and apple will cause a massive crash in the tech sector soon because they are overvauled) does.

the vita os isnt the game changer people think it is - they should have done a brand new os based on the model from the original idea they had for the PS3 and then ported it over to vita, or ps4 etc. If rumors have it there making the same mistakes hardware wise with "Orbis" where as a weaker "kepler" type gpu can do wonders without breaking the bank, and would be easier to program with and if the developer goes first with PS4 would look better from there to X720 on down.

this is inexusable that you got 15 studios, two game consles, a new one on the way - and you relying on Disc Hidden Content folks to save your handheld? nope. they deserve this loss - Hirai wants to double down, he can start with getting true umd support on the vita period. DD aint working, Media Create aint counting it. he can get those studios to get on creation process to make a game thats good enough to play all over the world so the company dont have to rely on Capapom or Activision. he can get a new OS for PS4 period - no cluttered ass mess. Use the XMB model but keep it simple.

They can come back. They always do. There the King of it. But they got to do it now.

I find it strange that you think the West "hated" the PSP because of lack of a second analogue stick and that one of the Vita's biggest problems is lack of UMD.
