New Super Mario Bros 2 announced for 3DS - August 2012

Lol at people defending the art style in the game. Its totally normal to defend the game, because probably (and I hope) the game level design is good, just like it was in NSMBWii, but defending the lamest and most bland art design ever?

I dont know why, but I have the impression they will not even use again the koopa kids like in the Wii one, its what im feeling.
I dont know, the screens scream more NSMB DS and less NSBWii, and thats not a good thing. I hope Im wrong.

But here we are, grass, desert, snow and forest, looking EXACTLY the same. Its not a thing that really hypes me.

You guys no serious, right?

Yoshi's Island is incredible and the 2nd best 2D Mario game. I'd say it's even better than Super Mario World.

Come at me.

Miyamoto has said many times he hated Yoshi's Island.

So much for that.

I'm sure I'm just continuing the hate parade but...

I really wish they dropped that atrociously generic art style. I find it almost offensive how they can make their flagship titles so boring looking. This is Nintendo's equivalent of the bald space marine. There's nothing appealing about it.

Same boring artstyle...

And the rest looks like the same old. Why can't they make a new Super Mario Bors game that feels different and unique?

Hey so what's going on in here? madness it seems.
Well i've only just awoken to this news, immediate thoughts included hell yes more 2D Mario and then cursing the use of the same old world settings, it's not even the art that bothers me at this point, it's that!
My hype is carried by the potential of good stage design alone, everything else isn't much to celebrate about. (including raccoon tail, where is the cape you fools?!)

It's amazing how all their 3D Mario games have had this amazing wonder and charm, and their 2D games are all really ugly.
Oh, Nintendo...

My wish list for this game now that its artstyle is set:

Multiplayer of some sort
Free dlc including more levels or worlds
a level editor and online sharing of custom levels
memorable music
no floaty physics

You're WRONG!!!! It's THE best 2D Mario game!
It's better looking, has more variety in gameplay (many things to transform into, very cool "health" concept with baby mario, better level design, double jump, egg throwing, awesome music).

That game is totally fresh!

In defense of this game, I will say that I expect the supposedly boring art style will feel much fresher in stereoscopic 3D.

I'd have preferred sprites, but just based on the screenshots we've seen, it looks like they're putting some effort into creating a sense of depth in the backgrounds. Going to wait till 3D footage is available before decrying the game's appearance.

I just don't see where the complaints come from. The only two games I can think of that are somewhat similar in design are the two previous NSMB games. Is it the third similar game where things become "bland"?

I want this game, but i'll admit the rehashing is way too blatant that it reminds me of Call of Duty. I can deal with the style, but they definitely need to stop using the same exact terrains with slight modifications and design something at least some what different.

These games have been bland since the NSMB reveal.

That doesn't mean they like the art style.

Or that they hate it. Was there a poll?

GAF dogpiles on anything so i wont even take these negative comments as anecdotal evidence.
Yesterday people were shitting on Pixar in the OT.

The problem is that it's 2.5D and not particularly detailed either; it's a middleground that doesn't quite deliver. I'm not a fan of the direction, but the games are generally pretty fun, so it doesn't bother me too much.

Yeah, this will look great with parallax backgrounds. I hope they mix up the level progression or power-ups though. Can't wait!

Because the response to these games have been amazingly positive?
So you don't think people will get tired of it after a while? I'm not saying it wont sell well, but for me it's the first Mario game I'm not even looking forward to.

source? i've never heard that. not saying you're wrong, i've just never once heard it.

That's crazy. I don't believe it.

Remember how "Miyamoto said many times" that he hated Donkey Kong Country. Well, that got debunked.

Well, technically he didn't actually say that, but one can infer as much.

It's called reading between the lines, people.

I think the Art Style of NSMB2 is perfectly fine. I think children prefer it to be simplistic. I've seen many of them complain about Super Mario 3D Land - there is a good chunk of younger children who find the game too hard and it being a 3D Mario Game unappealing.

It's gonna look much better on the actual device anyway, so...

I liked NSMB DS, but I think is the weakest of the 2(.5)D Marios. However, I really liked NSMB Wii much more, so for now I'm pretty interested.

Of course, a new artistic style wouldn't hurt, but I don't find this one unpleasant.

they're really mixing up the environments now. It's not just snow environment, it's a Christmas environment!

Does anyone else find it weird when there is Christmas environments in a game like Mario? I always start thinking about what that implies: there there is a judeo christian belief structure somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom, and that they celebrate the birth of their savior too lol

Jesus died for all of our sins, even if those sins include the genocide of an entire race of walking mushrooms and turtles.

Cautiously optimistic. Despised NSMB DS. Im in the minority on that one I guess but I'm glad there are some that agree.

I would love a 3D land sequel though.

Still hoping for a 3d classic of smw/3

Life is making me rather busy right now. mom is really sick, so been taking care of her and whatnot

I've also been playing Tales of Graces F and that's time consuming ;)

I'm actually less negative about what we're seeing in these NSMB2 images than others. Yes, the art style itself is similar to the previous entry, but they do seem to be adding slightly more spice to the surroundings and more color and pop. It's not necessarily as dingy as I was expecting. Still ugly, but just not... super offensively so.

This is the best news in the world! Not because Im excited about playing this, because i wont, but it means we might be getting something truly exciting for WiiU. Screens look every bit bit as dull and uninspired as the first two NSMB games.

Mario fans rejoice!

the wiiU game will be just as uninspired and ugly but hey there's miis right....

im sure nintendo has a simple level editor for the new mario games. a team of 10 could probably shit a new one out every 6 months if they wanted. lazy nintendo sucks but the games sell a ton to the general public so who am i to say they should put in some creative effort.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a traditional side-scrolling adventure game featuring Mario, Luigi and loads of other favorite characters from the popular Mario series. The game was created specifically as a pick-up-and-play experience that can be instantly enjoyed by players of all skill levels on the Nintendo 3DS system. The game will launch across North America in August.

That's way too harsh; NSMB games get far more flak than they deserve. These games unfortunately bear the burden of comparison to some of the greatest ever, so they fail to live up to extremely lofty expectations. In the realm of all 2D platformers, they are well above average.

The only reason Yoshi's Island isn't my favorite 2D Mario is simply because Super Mario 3 is my favorite game of all time. That said, for it to be -right- under it is saying an awful lot.

As for NSMB 2 3D, 'ehh...

I didn't care for the first one (bored me to literal tears) and though the Wii one was better, it still felt uninspiring. I do hope this one retains the challengenge the Wii one had though, but I sincerely doubt that.

Not sure what to do with this thread (saying the NSMB are bad games, that Yoshi's Island was a bad game, and Super Mario Bros. 3 being the best one), but I'll just explain it as a momentary stroke derived from a new Mario game being announced.

That said, I'm not excited at all for this game. I'm not a fan of 2D Mario, and I'm not a fan of Nintendo dumbing down the 3D Mario's to become more like the 2D Mario's. I'm sure this will be the best selling game of the year and will murder the Vita before it even has a chance to get back up, but I'll be playing something else.
