Dont know how much of GAF was aware of this game, so id rather make the thread from scratch: Lone Survivor is a new game made by Jasper Byrne, who was behind Soul Brother, and just realized by youtube subscription that there's a new trailer up showing some of the mechanics for the first time:

I think the trailer does a good job of explaining the game: you're basically the last man alive after the rest of the population has been turned into zombie-like creatures. You're safe in your apartment but you need to go back outside to scavenge for anything you could eat, stuff like that.

Game's been in development for a while now so there's few info, but IGF is coming up so hopefully we'll learn more. Looks really interesting.
 
Been following this game for a while now. Really like that one trailer with the crazy loud blaring music that was posted on indiegames a while back. Hopefully it comes out soon.
 
I remember seeing a screenshot for this in the Saturday Indie Game Screenshot thread, and really digging the artstyle. Thanks for info on what it was! Looks really cool.
 
That looks pretty interesting. Also, I suppose that's a surgical mask, but it looks like the main character has a huge smile on his face.

I was thinking yesterday about either making a new thread or bumping this one. I haven't bought the game yet but I really enjoyed the demo. It borrows some themes and the style of horror from Silent Hill 2, but it definitely didn't seem derivative. I can't wait to check out the full game.

Don't understand the "smile" thing, as if that would make any sense. Played a near-finished version of this a while back, and it was fantastic. Very scary and genuinely moving. And yes, it's very much inspired by Silent Hill. See: Soundless Mountain II.

be serious (unless you designed the sprite) without context, thats one grinny dude, like he trolled his way into being the last survivor.. i was convinced this was the case until i learned more about it and finally saw it as a surgical mask.

No. I had never heard the comparison until post-release. Must be an internet culture thing.
 
I've been playing this for the last couple of nights. It's fantastic - creepy, skin-crawly horror with great art and audio. (And I say "creepy, skin-crawly horror", but earlier this evening I shouted "FUCKFUCKFUCK" and almost shat my pants when I went into a certain unvisited room, for reasons I'm not gonna spoil.)

It's definitely more of an adventure game than anything else, I think; combat is a secondary concern. The inventory gets a little hard to use when you have lots of items and not being able to turn around when you have your gun out can be annoying, but these are pretty minor things. It feels like a massive game and I know it has multiple endings, so I'm going to be playing it more than once.

Any chance a mod could edit the thread title if a new one isn't being made?
 
One thing I want to say is that the demo is a good measure for some basic mechanics, but it's the equivalent if you judged Silent Hill 2 based off of a demo that finished after you the cutscene where you got the radio. Things really pick up in scares, intrigue, exploration, and story (of course) as the game gets further. But keep in mind this game is very much an adventure-type of game.

Kind of funny thing too. I played Soundless Mountain ages ago thinking "Man, I wish this was a full game.."

Then find out about this "Hey. This reminds me of that Silent Hill demake.. Sweet!" and then it turns out the same guy made them. Anyway, really cool game, lots of mindfuckery going on, which I love.

Seriously, extremely creepy sound design. It's amazing that one man nailed the feel of a Silent Hill game in a 2D title, even has that great pick up noise. The graphics and general script remind me of Earthbound for some reason, so that just makes the game that much better.
 
It's Flash at the end of it all, but he basically created his own development environment and tools to make the game. I think they're an extension of the ones he made for Soul Brother. It wasn't simple stuff, and I think that shows.

LOL, ActionScript is actually quite powerful, and more accessible than C, so it most certainly is a "real" programming language"...but in a way I see where you're coming from.
 
I just want performance on my netbook (playing "The Binding of Isaac" on Linux was horrible and it's not even a graphics monster) and it's annoying if the save game gets deleted.
Flash is maybe more accessible for the developer, but it's a pain in the ass for the gamer ...

EDIT: Bough it anyway :/
 
I played it on an Asus Eee PC which is basically a netbook on desktop, and it worked perfectly fine.

The game's been wrapped in Adobe Air, so the savegames aren't tied to your browser and ought to be as safe anything else (although Air itself has caused some problems for Jasper, unfortunately).

super spent this month so idk when i'll be able to buy it D: but really looking forward to it, glad to hear so great full-game impressions.
