Microsoft will provide more TV-like advertisements through XBox Live

How can a company do this to their customers? And it seems like they don't expect anyone to mind; they just casually mentioned that there'll be more ads now.

Xbox Gold customers who have been supporting Microsoft by playing on THEIR console, and PAYING them money each month to download demos and such, are now getting ads?

Do what? Are you sure that it's not the content providers who are wanting ads in their streaming service?

I'm quite sure the conversation has degraded to a point where no one has actually read the article. All they see are "LIVE + ADS! BETTER START RAGING!"

I've an idea. Smash your 360 into tiny little pieces and send it to MS HQ with a note saying that this is what you think of their plans to introduce ads into four apps.

Don't forget to a dollar sign for the S.

It is going to be funny when Playstation Plus starts running ads.
The awesome part will be playing "spot the guy that's done a complete u-turn". It was the same with online passes - they were the root of all evil until Sony announced they would be used for all of their first party titles, then the mass boycott was suddenly called off, lol.

Wait, what?

Sony first party titles use online passes? Since when? o_O

PSN already has ads in the Store.

Ads promoting sales, games, etc. Y'know, the same ads people hate on XBL.
Except for the part where ads are only on the store that you have to go to yourself, whats new section that you can turn off and the tiny ticker at the top right instead of the entire dashboard being built around ads, some of which have fuck all to do with games.

But how will I learn about Old Spice products and Marilyn Manson being on the Zune marketplace?

I've yet to see an ad on XBL that wasn't related to games or a sale or a new release.

I don't doubt there have been non gaming ads in the past and there may even be some on there now, but I've yet to see one.

I just wish I could use the previous dashboard. At least then I wouldn't have to get bombarded with ads on the slide that had all your own content.

Having to view this when I swapped over with RB for a few weeks, every time I turned on Xbox 360 wasn't a joy.

Home, which is your own personal channel, is covered in over 50% with ads.

Same with music.

People are upset about more ads, and do you blame them after seeing these?

I will admit Marilyn Mansons mug on there for what seemed like weeks was annoying but I am not fond of him.

There's nothing wrong with the majority of those, the only ones I disapprove of are the ones that advertise content that isn't really relevant to the tab you're currently on.

Those really need to go, but advertising content that's available in that selected menu/tab is fine, what's the problem?

The only ads on each one of those screens are the bottom right tile. The rest are content available on the service for the subsection.

Do you get the difference?

Notice how the default highlighted icon is the only one you need to click to access your content? And notice that the only real 'ads' disconnected from the service are the small boxes on the bottom right corner, whereas everything else is content available under that heading.

Explain what the problem here is - especially considering that the old dashboard made you move around to access your products (games, etc.).

Tap LB 4 times, press A, boom. Your game list. Loaded faster than anything on the blessed ad-free XMB.

Microsoft's dashboard is horrendous. A large mess of Bing, TV shows, etc. Maybe that should be the dashboard for Live members who want all of that trash, and Silver members can have a simple clean interface to either play games or get on the marketplace.

A sale? Well, I guess that's a great "catch-all." Why are they trying to "sell" WOW on my xbox? That's throwing me off the logic train.

It's real. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I booted up my 360 for the first time in a year or so last week.

Are you really tasking people with explaining how it is a problem that 80% of the screen real estate of the basic OS UI of their device is taken up with advertisements? Is this real life?

Not really, but whatever gets you off I guess.

Personally, I don't consider most of those 'ads'. I see them more as promoting content that's available, which is exactly what I expect MS to do.

The only ads that I consider ads and I disapprove of are the ones on the ends, the ones that aren't promoting content that's available on the service.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Splitting hairs. Theyre all advertising content in one way another. Content that inconveniences and locks away the stuff I actually want to be doing with my console behind multiple clickthroughs and sections.

The fact that there are ads that make noises as you rollover them is INDEFENSIBLE though. Just try it.

If you are paying $60 a year for a service that competitors offer for free, you are entitled to complain when the service you are paying for increases advertising.

Ehh, LIVE is better IMO than the PSN.

I dont hate ads i just skip over them in everything.

I fail to see anything wrong on those.

Arguing over square spacing seems ridiculous to me.

The base functionality seems un-affected by this.

LOL at people defending the ads, this is hilarious. Also lol at saying ps3 throws ads in your face, its like you never even turned one on.

Yes?

I mean, shit guys. Your console isn't a Steam game list. It's an online portal. As I said before, the "ads" are labeled advertisements, and are situated on the bottom right corner, the rest is equivalent to the carousels, top lists, sale items, etc. you see on the Steam homepage.

I don't see how my "bias" invalidates my valid points.
And of course I'm "biased" against Live (if by "biased" you mean I'm not fond of it).
I'm mostly a PC gamer, any online service available on consoles today is pretty much crap by my standards.

You kind of prove my point here. I understand that these console services are less than stellar to a PC user, I see no issue with that.

However what you miss, maybe due to said bias, is that Live isn't competing with Steam (or any equivalent) on the PC. It's competing against PSN and whatever Nintendo is cooking up.

Having preferences is fine, it's natural human behavior, but a bias clouds judgement, narrows views, and limits an open mind.

It could affect us in the long run if all the companies decide to start charging like MS is. If this happens then we are going to be even more angry. The ones to blame will be you and all the others who pay for something that should be free.

Keyword: could. Not saying it will happen, but if it does, then you have all yourselves to blame for it.

It will happen with or without Live, it's only natural with gaming seeping more and more into our mainstream culture.

No one is allowed to express valid criticisms of Live in the appropriate discussion topics unless you have it and plan to keep buying it.

People here have no problem with valid criticism, it would make for a great discussion since there is plenty to criticize IMO. The problem is many of the posters here aren't offering valid criticism, but instead just shitting up the thread with similar posts they have made in past Live threads.

Yes because me defending my choice to pay a few dollars a month for Gold against others depicting me as some type of sheep that will bend over and accept anything is the same as others defending rape and child porn, clearly.

To be fair, you can turn the ads off, so you only see them when entering a store.

No this is actually what you have to see when you turn on your Xbox.

Wow, I sincerely thought that might be a photoshop mock-up to stress a point. I've heard people like Ryan on Giant Bomb complain about it being a slow, cluttered mess, and I occasionally watch people play games on their 360 on Twitch but I rarely actually see the dash. That's gross and really quite offensive.

I do think the dashboard is uglier as far as design asthetics go. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills though. PRESS THE GUIDE BUTTON. I know some of you are used to having a useless guide button but that is way everything works on the 360 in game and out of game.

Well one, why does "Home" even have ads? It most certainly shouldn't and didn't before. Why do the ads take priority over your own content? Do you see how small the boxes are for your own content compared to the gigantic ads? Three, you could easily navigate through all your stuff before with out having to view ads on every single panel. Now you're pretty much forced to with every function on the main menu.

Why do I have to see the ads on every single thing that I do? I shouldn't. I also don't think a comparison torwards cable/satellite is proper as well. What internet services do you use that you are forced to see ads when you pay for a premium? Only thing I can think of is Hulu Plus, and you know how everyone feels about that. You pay for a internet service provider, and you're paying to play online on the Xbox 360, the least they could do is make it how it was before.

haha, wow

He's completely ignorant about what he's defending. That's gotta be a first.

Having not seen ads to that extent makes me ignorant? LOLOLOLOL.

And I don't consider most of those ads in any case, promoting content that's available on the service is something I expect the operator to do.

bish gets all the credit :)
We get that Live is better than PSN and Nintendo.
We get that Steam doesn't count.
Don't say "these aren't ads"
What we don't get is people defending even more ads.

Just say it sucks or you don't mind.

Well, I guess Durango's official name ought to be AdBox 720 at this rate. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw people supporting paying a monthly fee to play p2p when Live Gold launched and I'm even more shocked at said paying customers putting up with this barrage of ads. What a complete joke.

Use the guide menu. I've been using since the most recent update, haven't looked back and it's probably the main reason I've seen any ads or at least ads to that extent.

Ryan is referring to quick launch, and yes it takes 5-10 seconds to display anything. Doing anything on the system is still easier than trying to do the same thing on PS3 though. I don't there's any denying that or the fact that Netflix went from my most preferred version to least preferred version in a single update.
