I don't know if Nintendo wholly own the Eternal Darkness IP. They have a patent on 'sanity effects', but from everything Dyack's said the actual Eternal Darkness IP is a bit more complicated. Chalk up the fact that Nintendo still has shares in Silicon Knights and yeah, it's a bit of a weird situation.

I'm sorry, this is a few pages back, but no, it's not "complicated" at all. Dyack and SK don't own the IP in any sense of the term. Nintendo owns the gameplay mechanic, they own the trademarks to the name "Eternal Darkness". The only thing that's complicated about it is that Nintendo still has a partial stake in the company, even though SK hasn't made games with them (this has been confirmed by Dyack in interviews where he calls Nintendo their "silent partner"). That would make it complicated in the way that Nintendo might not want to piss off a developer it still owns a stake in. But if push came to shove, Nintendo owns all the components to do it.

While searching for the rather stupid term "wireless RAM", I came across the Wireless F-RAM memory by Ramtron. Now, this is non-volatile memory and thus not the usual random access memory we talk about for Wii U. However, it apparently performs reads and writes like a RAM, so a slightly different volatile version could perhaps be developed. Its specs aren't that impressive, if we talk using it for Wii U anyway, with only 16-Kilobit of memory. So, to gain approximately 2 Gigabyte using these, it would require at least one million units (if my math is correct). Using these natively is therefore probably not a good idea. What I'm wondering is if you could perhaps use NFC to add more RAM (for example DDR3) to Wii U. This F-RAM uses RFID which is similar to NFC.

Wireless memory evidently exists in some fashion, so what to discuss here is whether a sufficient amount of RAM (or other type of volatile memory) can be added wirelessly, via NFC, to Wii U or if it would be too costly. Is such a thing even possible?

The latency would be amazingly high. Nintendo would be better off partitioning some of their internal storage as swap space (but that's a bad idea for other reasons, like the risk of too many flash memory clusters going bad).

Or they could sell a "RAM Expansion" SD card and do the same trick that way. Do they have more than one SD slot on the system? I can't remember and am too lazy to check.

If Wii U street pass is legit, Multi-plat smartphone app is the way to do it in the US. A general Nintendo Network app on iOS, Android, and RIM devices would be transformative for Nintendo. It could be a combination of Mii Maker, Street Pass and eShop browsing/purchasing.

I seriously hope one is coming. I know we'll get the Eshop app, but you're right about a NiN app being a gamechanger.

I wrote up a quick piece on Eternal Darkness 2 Wii U speculation. It's nothing more than what I've already discussed here, but for anybody interested, you can read it here.

Who doesn't like mashed potatoes? C'mon.

Great read, btw.
I loath mashed potatoes, but I like potato wedges and fries (had some today with Steak à la Lindström, a Swedish steak dish with beetroot and caper).

I find your article nice as well, EatChildren. Good flow and good language. The more Eternal Darkness exposure the better.

Okay, okay, time-out. Woah, I need to know.

What don't you guys like mashed potatoes? Is it the consistency? The taste? What?

A couple of remarks.

I've seen a lot of praise for Red Steel II here... as if it's a really good game. Yet i own it, and i would hardly catagorize it as anything above mediocre. Maybe others compare it to the original when they come to that conclusion? A for effort?

People here seem to believe we'll get a Xenoblade II for WiiU somewhere around launch. Yet the original was in development since before 2008 (I think we saw a first glimps during E3 2008 as World of Monado... for me the highlight of that E3). Can we really expect them to put out such a high quality game, yet this time in HD, within the given timeframe?

I don't think a single person here has ever stated such a thing. We may see what the company is working on at E3, but it won't be ready until late 2013/early 2014 the earliest.

For Square Enix's contribution to the Wii U, I would die and go to heaven if another Dissidia was made for it. That game would be really interesting with the tablet controller.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised to see a teaser or a trailer for Monolith's new game, but I would never expect it until somewhere late in the launch window (aka sometime in 2013), or mid/late 2013.

I have just one question, and I'm sorry if this was brought up before, but I haven't kept up with this thread in the last couple of days:

In that Rayman Legends video, did anyone notice how the Wii U tablet was wired all the time? What is this even supposed to imply?

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I see what you mean.

Nice.

Are we sure that is an IR camera and not an IR transmitter? A transmitter would make dreams of a universal remote possible.

1) I like Red Steel II quite a bit. It has problems, but I like the premise, the core mechanics, and the art is lovely. I also think it has better motion controlled sword controls than Skyward Sword, and perfectly blends gunplay and melee combat. The core battle system is sublime, and I think history will forget the team's efforts to get motion controlled combat in 3D environments working. And that's sad.

But as said the game has problems. Pacing, length, story, and balance. Needed a lot more work as a whole product.

2) I don't think anybody expects a launch game. What they expect is it to be shown. By E3 2012, Xenbolade will be two years old, and development for their next project (known to be Wii U) would have started before Xenoblade shipped. So the Xenoblade team's Wii U title has been in development for over two years. For this reason, there's a good chance something will be shown at E3.

This years E3 will prove once and for all whether or not Nintendo lives on the same planet as everyone else. I think for the most part everyone knows what they need to do, what should/probably/needs to be shown, and so on and so forth.

The game plan seems clear, I wonder how the execution is going....1 month left I guess.

Opinions and all that really.
I'm a huge fan of Red Steel II, though I wouldn't say the game isn't without its faults. It is still an enjoyable game.

At launch? That would be doubtful. I would be very surprised if we didn't get a trailer though. They have been experimenting with HD development since 08, and they've been working on their WiiU project for over 2 years now.

If they saw Link* eating mashed potatoes, they'd totally change their mind.

* depending on the fan, he might have to have pink hair for it to work.

I wonder if they ever made their own.

it's a dev unit

It implies the controller is chargable through a cable, the controller is still wireless playable

Okay. The reason I asked at all is because there were some rumors some time ago on 01net, I think, that Nintendo was having problems making the controller work on wireless, and would probably resort to wired for simultaneous streaming.

Also, I have one more question: to anyone who has happened to actually see or use the console hands on, did you happen to see the first three letters of the unit's model number? Like Wii had REV, DS had NTR, GBA SP had AGS, GCN had DOL... The reason I ask this is because that might give us an idea into the system's project name (IIRC, Project Cafe was never officially confirmed by Nintendo, was it?)

Wikipedia says NFC has a "theoretical working distance with compact standard antennas: up to 20 cm (practical working distance of about 4 centimetres)." Is that enough for street pass? Maybe it isn't designed to work like the 3DS (passively street passing complete strangers you don't even know are carrying a 3DS). Maybe it's only designed for actively interacting with other people you know are carrying the Wii U "gamer card" (people you meet every day at school, work, lunch, etc.).

20 cm = 7.87 inches (theoretical range)
4 cm = 1.57 inches (practical range)

Possibly, but I wouldn't be surprised if they wait for the inevitable September conference.

The rumored device wouldn't use NFC, but the same technology the 3DS uses for StreetPass (which I think is some kind of bluetooth technology, but I have no idea to be honest).

This also wouldn't surprise me.

I guess the most accurate way to put it is: the Xenoblade team has been working long enough on a Wii U game that the idea of it being shown in some form, prior to the launch of the system, either at E3 2012 or some time after, is not out of the question.

I think Xenoblade's PAL and NTSC conversions fool people into thinking the game was only recently finished. The Xenoblade team has been free since no later than June 2010, probably earlier.

There are people who don't like mashed potatoes?! The fuck?! I thought the people populating the Wii U thread had good taste.

Now I want some garlicy, buttery, fluffy mashed potatoes.
